He wasn't going just a bland "keep going" or "you are doing it wrong", he carefully pointing out what Tom needed to do, never using a negative tone of "don't do that", rather using a reasuring one that let him know what he needs to continue doing, that way there's no disruption in the pace and leads him to focus on what's important. Most people overlook the skill that takes to be able to teach that way.

    To expand on the "where are the vibrations coming from" discussion at 9:27: Chris is right that the movement is coming from you. Your body can intuitively tell when you're in an unstable position and knows roughly how to respond, but without balance training, it defaults to relatively large, drastic corrections, and as a result you end up in a feedback loop where your brain keeps trying to correct your balance but overshooting and having to respond to its own overcorrection. The more you panic and try to consciously adjust, the worse things get. Balance training develops specialized neurological pathways (so called "muscle memory") and allows your body to refine that intuitive response down to the small, subtle movements which are actually effective at maintaining stability.

    • @HoshinoMirai
      @HoshinoMirai Год назад +34

      If you have ever programmed a PID controller before, this is what happens when you set your variables too high so the adjustment is always out of proportion when correcting the movements, and thus it overshoots every time and responds to the overshoot with another overshoot, ending up in a constant "vibration"

      When Tom said he was going to fall off if the tried it again, he was probably wrong.
      His body "had this" now, his brain knew how to do it. He just had to trust himself. (And the video just now shows "day 2", so I don't know what happens later.)

      @@TrondBrgeKrokli Also paramotoring. You're suspended from a big parachute wing, so if you move the wing left, you go right (a pendulum effect). This causes a side to side oscillating wobble which amateur paramotor gliders can make worse as they'll steer back to the middle of the wobble aggressively, thus making the next side of it worse, just like being on a set of swings. To slow yourself down, you don't push yourself towards the floor when you're up high.

    What I love about this channel (and didn't expect initially) is how much it is showcasing great teachers / coaches, and teaching me a bit myself about how to do that better. Chris was fantastic!

    Chris is an amazing teacher and presenter. The way he was so calm and re-assuring on the first day, and so forceful to push Tom on the second day. Added to that, I'm so impressed with the sens of how centered and relaxed he and his personality seem to be. Amazing.

    That was incredible. The mental commitment and physical dedication is truly a demonstration of what is possible.
    A Tom Scott video always informs, it often amazes, but this one truly inspired.

    I really appreciate when this series shows Tom having a hard time with things, like this and spelunking. I think that honesty is important on today’s internet. Tom is a supremely cool guy in my book, and these videos show that it’s good to try new things and it’s ok to have a hard time.

    "I think it looks better with flailing" slayed me. It's true. That was hilarious. Well done, Tom! To do that after one day of training... Awesome! That was impressive. Chris is one cool dude. He's a good teacher, and he knows how to get the best out of people without undue pressure. He'd be cool to sit and have a beer with, I bet. Great video.👍👍👍👍👍

    One of the things I love the very most about these videos is that Tom is just a normal guy. He's not some superhuman michael phelps or usain bolt, who blow our wildest dreams out of the water due to their ability--Tom is exactly like us (although quite brave) and his accomplishments demonstrate what *any* of us can do, solong as we put our minds to it. Amazing, inspirational content Tom, thank you so much!

    I love these videos! You (and your camera and editing crew) do such a great job of showing the mental, physical, and emotional work (genuine *work*) involved in these projects. The genuine self-growth and mental discipline needed to do this (and ride the roller coasters and go caving *again*) is both astounding and inspiring, Tom! I was sitting here (in my easy chair) cheering you on the whole way. Thank you for bringing us on another inspiring journey.
