    Here is a little extra lore from the books. There are no spoilers, but it does give context to the settings of Ceres and Eros:
    Before Tycho corp (I think even before Fred was a part of the company) they spun up asteroids. They handled everything from solidifying the crust, making tunnels, docks, and giving some temporary boosters to get that spin going. In fact, since centrifugal force is what makes "gravity" ships that are docked are essentially "hanging" and climbing "up" means going towards the center.
    Eros was one of the first big stations that Tycho spun up. And all these high end businesses moved in, dock space was at a premium hour-to-hour basis. But that was a while ago. Some time later, they spun up Ceres, and this had better docks, better tech, just better everything because tech developed more. All those high tech business relocated to Ceres, meanwhile Eros dried up. With all those vacancies, brothels, casinos, and other stuff moved in. Docks got cheaper so you could stay a few days or a week if you wanted to. This is why Eros and Ceres is so different.
    As I said, nothing important story-wise, I just think it is so cool the authors went through those layers of world-building!

      Ah yes another insight into Eros past. Another commenter said something similar. Ceres with its newer technology is like laying down a highway that passes by a small town and kills its economy. That analogy is one I came up with.

    One of the hallmarks of excellent science fiction is that the creators carefully think through the implications of a technological innovation, and weave it into the setting and story.
    So, if you look at the orbit of Eros (it's a real asteroid), you can see how useful it would be if ships take a long time to reach Mars and the Asteroid Belt. It's a great combination of mine, hotel, truck stop and ferry.
    You fly out when it's close to Earth or Mars or headed through the Belt, dock to it, hang out until it reaches the right point in its orbit, undock, and then fly to the needed destination.
    But then, what happens when a technological breakthrough occurs, and it only takes a few weeks to reach the Belt from Earth, instead of the months it takes Eros to orbit out that far? What happens to the station and the people who live and work there, when Eros is no longer needed?
    Finding Julie dead was a great twist, and *very much* in keeping with the "noir" nature of Miller's plotline.
    In "noir" detective fiction, the bad guys are *really bad* ; the "good guys" aren't all that good; and in the end everybody gets what they deserve -- except the (very) rare innocent, who suffers, but whose suffering elicits the compassion that offers redemption. 😬

    When she said 'another salvage', I think Naomi was referencing their visit to the Scopuli in Episode 1. At one point someone called that a 'salvage mission', though it turned into something quite different.
    If you watch closely when Miller leaves the shuttle after docking at Eros, you can see Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham, the co-authors of The Expanse novels leaving the shuttle behind him. It's a nice little Easter egg.
    I was fooled by the Lionel Polanski thing too, by giving a male name and referring to Lionel as 'him' all the time, is a simple but effective misdirection technique. But now we know!
    It's nice to see that elevator music still exists in our future... in only the most classy of establishments.
    I liked Miller's 'Not anymore' line. This show has some very predictable lines, but it's because they are so natural for the scene, that people can almost predict them. That's why they are so satisfying to hear! Then other times, they subvert expectations, just to keep us on our toes. The writing is incredible, and fortunately the casting, crew, and everything else rises to the call and delivers excellence, every episode. Just some of the reasons I believe it to be head and shoulders above any other SF show... heck, ANY other show, out there.

    • @irishlatinoreacts1842
      @irishlatinoreacts1842  Месяц назад

      Oh yea, the fact that I predicted the line before it came does not in anyway deter from its writing at all. Sometimes the best line or most natural line is the most obvious, and him saying something different would've been just looked at as random and unnatural. And I was glad to see elevator music exist still as well. Makes me hopeful for the future.

    What she means is going aboard an abandoned ship near an asteroid. Last time they did this was with the Scopuli.
    Kenzo's suit is from Tycho, or his own, as you realized. The other's suits are from the Canterbury. Same for the helmets, Kenzo's helmet has a Tycho sign. They take great care of such datails. You won't see anyone wearing new stuff unless it makes sense. For example, the first time anyone was wearing something else than what they had from the Cant was Holden having a Tycho-cap after they had been on Tycho for some time.
    Kenzo tells them they cannot treat him like a "canary in a cole mine". Later, his helmet-cam is labeled as "CANARY" on Alex' screen. ;)
    When Holden and Naomi walk towards the reactor room, he starts babbling. You may notice this happen again in certain situations.
    Other easter-eggs in this episode:
    When Alex launches the drone, you can see the names Peart, Lee, & Lifeson on the screen. This are members of the Canadian rock band "Rush". Rush has a famous song called "Cygnus X-1" in which an explorer travels towards the black hole "Cygnus X-1" on his spaceship named "Rocinante":
    _Flew into the light of Deneb_
    _Sailed across the Milky Way_
    _On my ship, the 'Rocinante'_
    _Wheeling through the galaxies_
    The drone screen also says "roci.CX1 == " before each of the names, CX1 is a reference to that song.
    Later, in the scene where Fred checks the data from Lopez' data chip, on the wall you can see "Section CX-1", another reference to that song.
    When Miller arrives on Eros, the book writers Ty & Daniel have a cameo. They are amoung the passengers leaving the ship right before Miller.
    On the different ship lists we see, there are dozens of names from movies, series, books, comics, or games. The most popular one is probably the Serenity from the series Firefly.

Later, with other stealth ships, it attacked the Donnager. It was then infected by the protomolecule. When the crew of the Anubis were eaten by the blue goo, Julie parked it in the crevice of an asteroid, took the shuttle Anubis A1 to Eros where she then died. The Roci crew then found the Anubis at the asteroid before heading to Eros as well.

    It's a very obvious statement, but Miller's conversation with the Mormon - they're talking about Miller's leap of faith, to find Julie. He's got nothing left. He's lost his job, his last money was spent on securing this trip and he's risking everything on finding Julie. What happens if he gets there and she wants nothing to do with him, or she's dead? If, as he says, there's just... nothing? What's left for Miller? Poor guy - for him, there is no god at the end of his pilgrimage. What now?
    The statue being made for the Nauvoo is presumably of the angel Moroni.
    Earth is similar to the modern west - affluent, but also corrupt and lazy, poor but full of very rich people. Whilst they could afford to build stealth ships theoretically, they'd rather save a couple of bucks and keep building old designs on the cheap, probable making some beurocrat's families very rich. Britain's navy for example, keeps old ships going by fitting aftermarket parts, to the point that their propulsion systems fail when the gas powered engines crap out and the diesel generators can't handle the extra load, causing them to short out entirely.
    Mars on the other hand is an ideologically united enemy like China, or the USSR, and they're founded on the principle of technological superiority. They're also very aware they're the only other superpower in the galaxy, and Earth has a huge head start. We'll see more of them later.
    In short, Earth has a much bigger navy, but Mars has much better ships, hence why everyone assumes this "Anubis" must be Martian.
    Lopez talked about Pheobe in their interrogations, and afterwards whilst taking Holden to the Tachi (now Rocinante) - there was a lot going on, don't worry that you missed it.
    The Anubis is a bigger than the Rocinante, by about a third, but the Roci was a small ship, held *inside* the Donnager's hangar. The Anubis is small but powerful - gang of ships like the Anubis managed to take out the Donnager, technologically advanced Mars' pride and joy. Who has the sort of money to build these things? Earth doesn't have the political will, the Belt is too poor by far, and they attacked Mars.

    My man an important detail to know is that Eros, is an "Amor" group asteroid, and actually is NOT in the belt, but rather orbits around elliptically from outside to crossing then inside the orbit of Mars. So It itself is NOT in the belt, as is the case with the Jovian Trojan asteroids, which is vaguely near where to Incident with the Knight took place, and why the Donnager (Flagship of the Martian Jupiter Fleet) was the ship that responded.
    The show doesnt doa great job of conveying the vast distances being crossed, because remember, neither the planets nor the asteroids, where they are, is staitonary... they are constantly changing location, which makes the navigation involved INSANE. Given the show tries to speed the narrative along, you never really see how long it took the Canterbury to get to the distress call. That ship was headed back for Ceres ( in the belt, inside Jupiter orbit) so it was just there luck to stumble across the signal on their pathway.

      It is a frigate class corvette, which I assume is either the authors not doing their research on ship classes or Martians just hinting it punches above the expected weight class of a corvette.
      It definitely fits the role of a corvette in the Martian use, though - small ship capable of independent operations but very much expected to be part of a fleet (the Donnager class carried two).

It's not his place to decide or question why there's a hit out on Holden. Only that the legitimate government of Earth decided it was necessary. Kenzo is the man. He should have his own spin off series.

    I'm surprised you didn't pick up sooner that the derelict stealth ship was the one Julie was on in Episode 1. That blood smear next to the airlock sign was the first big tell. And that somebody broke out of that small room (not in your edit). The show does kind of wrong-foot the audience though with many/most people thinking that the Julie scene was likely on the Scopuli. So there's that expectation / misunderstanding to be toppled.
    Holden asked Lopez about what happened on Phoebe while they were waiting for the temporary airlock (big plastic curtain thing) to be set up outside the room the rest of the crew were being held in, where Alex had taken the sedative shot, in the middle of the boarding attack on the Donnager. Holden said words along of the lines of "everybody keeps asking about Phoebe, if we're all going to die because of this you could at least tell me what it's all about". Lopez told him the Donnager had been sent there to investigate after Phoebe station had "gone dark" (i.e. stopped sending and replying to radio messages, etc.) They found everybody dead, bodies incinerated and re-frozen to the walls of the ice tunnels, evidence of what looked like some kind of toxic spill and all computer data cores wiped.
    The Blue Falcon lobby scene is a masterclass in building tension. Lesser shows would use the music to telegraph rising tension, meanwhile The Expanse plays cheesy elevator music and does it all with Amos' growing vigilance of the people in the background.

      I definitely thought the first scene in the series was on the Scopuli yes. I don't mind that I miss things though because I think it makes my reactions more interesting. If I was a step ahead all of the time, I think that makes for a less compelling watch. I hate when I watch someone react to one of my favorite shows or movies and they pick up on a twist or something before it happens.

    It’s funny. I’ve seen this series 7 or 8 times now. And every time I heard Eros referenced in a science documentary or another sci-fi show… it sends shivers down my spine. I cannot help but see the stars through the eyes of the events of this show lol.
    And Eros. Oh my god… Eros. _shivers_ What absolute Lovecraftian nightmare fuel that place is about to become!
    Buckle up my man, this show is about to go full throttle into a direction you never see coming.

    Unlike Ceres, Eros looks like a potato, I've been curious how the living space works with the spin gravity, it's rotational axis, and how it's designed. I guess maybe there's a cylinder structure inside for the habitat?

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom Месяц назад +1

      With the main docks being on one end, and the docks being "at the bottom" in terms of the illusion of gravity due to spin, it has to be spinning end over end, not rolling like a link sausage. It's implied that the interior spaces are mostly a series of hollowed out caverns and tunnels. In-situ resources, otherwise, why not just build a station, like Tycho.

    • @wagnarokkr
      @wagnarokkr Месяц назад +1

      I think this may be part of why it's such a shithole compared to Ceres - the weirder shape means weirder rotation, means fewer people want to actually live there, means only people who can't live anywhere else live there

    You did not seem to recognize the blood smear, which we had seen in the very first episode. I do agree with your questioning of Holden's hunch that this is the same ship that killed the Cant. They haven't even seen whether or not it has railguns yet, or has torpedoes, or that most of their torpedoes have been expended.

    • @pspirto8014
      @pspirto8014 Месяц назад +5

      In Ep. 4 Holden had realized that the ships that were attacking the Donnager were the same type that nuked the Canterbury, and those ships obviously had railguns, RIP Shed. Also, aboard the Anubis here they came across a suit marked 'Scopuli,' to which Amos says 'This explains what happened to the crew of the Scopuli,' that is they were aboard this ship before they got spaced. The Cant was attacked by a ship, obviously the one that wrecked the Scopuli and captured its crew, hiding in close vicinity of the wreck. Holden had every reason to assume that this was that ship.
