      Agreed. That would be a fantastic long-form discussion. But, CBS doesn't want the mainstream audience to tune out, so we get the soundbite version. I know the Colbert Report used to sometimes do an extended interview posted online. I'd love if they did that for these more substantive, philosophical interviews.

Yes ! reporters have not and should be asking "what are your specific policies and how will you impact the budget with these policies" ? Just showing a speech or rally does not provide the details we need to make informed decisions. What are the policies ? What have you done that proved you can make these things happen ?

    This is the way I was taught at the University of Florida School of Journalism JM'80. The problem is that too many people "doing" journalism never graduated from an accredited university where you were taught not only how to write in proper style and how to pursue stories, but how to be absolutely ethical about it.

    One contributing factor in loss of trust of journalism is consumers do not know the difference between journalism and infotainment. For a start, we ought to restore a vigorous social studies education requirement for every year of public schooling. This used to be a given, but the GOP systematically eroded social studies requirements, so that we have "educated" adults who do not have a basic understanding of political systems or of geography.

    Most people don’t get Journalism anymore. They get “Opinions”. Mostly because they look for information that validates their own views. That is what’s most disturbing about Trump supporters. When given facts and the truth they simply dismiss them.

  • @Martinbeef
    @Martinbeef 7 месяцев назад +7

    Well that doesn’t make sense: why give such a small amount of airtime to someone who is honest and has so much integrity. I’d like to have asked him so many more questions, for example, why, despite 10’s of court cases, is Trump trusted by so many people? There is a crisis in America and you, voters have a responsibility to the rest of the world as well as your own country, to choose someone who is honest and doesn’t have to call people names, tell so many lies, and says he’s on the side of the working man when he lowered taxes for the rich? I hope Joe Biden fights for his life when he runs for president. He has a lot of material to refer to, which call out Trump. I hope the American people see sense.

    I agree & understand that candidates NEED to be asked the tough questions about governance with good followup questions to pin them down on what we need to know. Often though, candidates have their talking points & what they're going to say & don't even answer the questions. Sure, it's because they don't have answers & won't be able to do what they're being asked, but it's also because, for too many people, they don't even have to answer the questions or be able to do the work & job of being in office. *His/Their followers will vote for them no matter what they say, don't say, do, & don't/won't do. That's a huge part of the problem we've got now. As long as there's no (or very little) accountability, they'll just keep doing it, too. As long as they can get away with it, they will. For another example, this Congress has done the least ever of any U.S. Congress. The journalists, & politicians, AND the voters all need to do their homework, take their responsibilities & duties seriously, & do their/our jobs & do them well! ...for a change! And I mean 'for a change,' as in doing things differently/effecting change & also to make *positive differences/improvements & changes!
    *Another example is that TFG didn't even have to debate to win the Republican nomination. His diehard, hard core, dyed in the wool followers will vote for him no matter what. So he doesn't have to answer any questions for them. Hopefully there'll be enough others who really, truly want actual, factual ANSWERS & can tell what's really going to happen, depending on how they vote.
    I do hope you have Dean Cobb on again & others who can help more understand the processes, etc. to get us through this year more successfully & safely! Thank you so much, Stephen & staff & crew!

    I have to disagree with a point he made about 45 and 2016. There were many cutaways from a candidates stump speech to an empty podium, waiting for 45 to appear.
    Media has become a slave to click bait and short attention span. While I don’t know if news should go back to being a total loss for a network, but this chasing of ad dollars and showing an endless loop of a train wreck with no context is frustrating.
    Maybe this is why Colbert said that people re getting their news from late night shows. Those shows are sharing the same news but while not in real time, it is with context.
