Its because those units were grandfathered in from days long by - flop houses, SROs, rooming houses, "dorms" for young unmarried workers. And even in days gone by - no one wanted to stay in those places for a lifetime.
@@ae2948If they brought back those SRO (Single Room Occupancy) units, at reasonable rates (say, $10/night), there could be a place for some (many?) homeless people to go, if they are not too far gone with addiction/mental issues. In smaller cities, there are initiatives to build tiny houses for the homeless. I just read an article that Columbus Ohio is spending $30million to build 40 little *sheds,* essentially, to house the homeless. I think the SRO model needs a comeback.
One couldn’t offer even this apartment in Japan in my country. I don’t know whether there are laws prohibiting the rent of places like this, but people wouldn’t go there doesn’t matter what. One would never get people in Slovakia to live here. So cititens would take care of offers like this by themselves. They’d destroy it by refusing it. The latter would lead to people not to offer apartments like this.
With the housing crisis in so many areas, places like this while not a dream apartment really do have everything one needs. Having your own kitchen, laundry, bathroom including a little tub is wonderful for peace of mind and convenience.
The thing is, is that the housing crisis is a completely preventable and fabricated issue. There's plenty of land, material and people willing to build, and land owners can make a perfectly generous profit taking 20% or so of peoples wages. But, over the last 50 years the industry became monopolized, and so the younger generation now have to pay up to 60% of their wage for a place to live, which creates crime and homelessness and constricts the income for every other industry such as restaurants. Only restaurants that make very high profit can survive. All so that a few old men, instead of simply having a nice house and car, can enjoy a carefree motor-yachting lifestyle.

@@327legoman I know I'm late, but as a zoomer who makes $6 above minimum wage in my city with a full time job, I'd still have to spend 60-70% of my monthly income on necessities alone unless I decide to share rent with at least one other person. I don't even have any student debt, just a car loan I'll be done with in 2 years. I don't much mind if my living space would be really small, I just want to be able to *not* be forced to scrape by in the event that I had to live alone...
That apartment is awesome! Having built and lived in my own van for over 2 years, that apartment is so neat and has everything you need. People are way too materialistic, for one person you don’t need any more than this. I’d happily live there, I mean, it has its own bathroom and a washing machine. I really feel like micro apartments would help a lot in the US. We should reconsider the size standards as long as it's understood that these must be literally affordable on minimum wage. Could get people off the street or just finally out of their parents house. A win either way. The housing crisis here is insane. I think a lot of us would choose a micro apartment over a $1200+ one bedroom that doesn't even have a washer.
I lived in Osaka for a year in a 25 SqMr apartment and it was wonderful. I arrived to Japan with one hugh suitcase and a duffel bag. When I went home in addition to these two items I had 3 cardboard boxes full of stuff I sent via snail mail home (it took them 3 months to arrive...). What I realized after living like this, is that I can definitely manage with much less possessions and also that even in a small place I can accumulate quite a lot of thing (which I'm not sure I need it all). One more thing: Japanese apartments may be small but they are designed very smartly and efficiently. I want to go back to Osaka!
The bathroom is supposed to be a giant dryer; you hang your clothes up on the drying bar/line and then press the right button to turn on the drying feature. Was there a mystery button in the bathroom that could have been the turn-on-dryer button?
I like how Japan saves space (mostly because they have so little space) and yet they lack nothing! That is a sweet little apartment that for your liking could add what is missing and store it over head! Also they are mostly out and about and probably spend little time indoors! That is genius! Shit never dries in my bathroom or airing cupboard but this sounds like there’s is actually forced ventilation and the drying happens in a room that frequently gets wet anyway and the system reduces the risk of mould
Some people live in RVs and they are even smaller. The apartment is small but decent. It is cleaner and safer than being homeless. Major cities should have these. Japanese are smart people, always coming up with good ideas.
Dude, they sell clothes dryers in Japan. They even have some units that are washer/dryer combos and serve both functions. In addition, in newer apartment buildings, some bathrooms have a fan function that can dry your clothing when you hang it in there. As a matter of fact, the circle thing in the bathroom was for you to hang your clothes on.

Heyo, that was fun! In Japan sometimes the bathroom is also a DRYER ROOM! Heated air is blown in and moist air is removed with exhaust fan. There are also washer/dryer machines. Yes they do both. However, many still hang outside. It’s free and eco,
There are washer/dryers in Western countries too, but since they are basically useless, nobody uses them. They also aren’t “dryers” per se and are incredibly inefficient. They use the heat from the washer motor to verrrrry slowly provide a little heat. You also have to take items out after the wash, shake them and put them in or you will end up with baked in wrinkles. Both my washers have the feature and the one time I used it, two pair of jeans took 6 hours to dry. Gimmick…nothing more.
10:24 those are natural gas quick connection valves. There used to be a small 2 burner range there but the IH electric one replaced it. But you can plug a heater in there for winter warmth and keep the electric bill down too. Just remember to crack a window
12:34 that’s an access hatch for water and electricity for the apartment. That was a unit bath, and is an enclosed waterproof shell. So the main electric connections go above there as it’s easily hidden as it’s the last thing to be put into most apartments that size. I used to retrofit these places with better internet connections for the owners of places like these in Tokyo. 15:10 there may have been a dryer setting for the shower room. You usually hang clothes in there if there’s no balcony.
Kinda remind me of the apartment my husband and I stayed in in Osaka! You're right about the shopping arcade, and, well, all of Japan. You will never forget your time there, it's an experience of a lifetime.
As of today, that ¥190,000 was about US $1315. Not bad, I guess. That micro apartment has everything a person needs if they are just starting out as a young college grad. Thanks for showing it to us. Yes. They do sell dryers in Japan. They are expensive and few people have space for them. And women aren't confused by the small garbage can in the bathroom. Definitely big enough for tampons or pads, make up removing wipes, etc.
I love the neighborhood, which is mostly free of cars, even if the noise from the bar can keep you awake. If you lived there full-time you'd get used to it. The apartment has everything you need. If there were more of them in US cities, we could prevent a lot of homelessness.
@@ranarosatravels Addiction I can agree with but keep people with mental illnesses out of this. We are not without our opportunities. In fact it’s more of an income based problem that causes homelessness. There are plenty of people who work from both sides of the spectrum (meaning those society deems mentally stable and those it doesn’t) who work and can either make ends meet or have more than enough that they can afford to have nice houses and fancy cars and pay for their kids to go to college. The same can also be said about the opposite in that both “normal” and “not normal” people don’t have enough in some cases. An example I can give for the former is a company in New York (I think it was New York City or the article just didn’t say a city and just listed the state as this was a few years ago so I don’t fully remember) was hiring strictly for people with mental disabilities. I am autistic with high functioning so I don’t know if I could have gotten a job there or not. It would depend on whether they wanted people who would be less likely to find a job elsewhere or not. One of my family members shared the job posting with me over Facebook and had said I should apply. I didn’t for a few reasons. One I listed above in that I wasn’t sure if there were limiting factors based on severity of mental illness. Another was that I was somewhat struggling to save money at the time so I would have had some difficulties finding a place to live and I have no family in the area I could have stayed with while I saved enough to find an apartment.
As a fully certified menstrator, having pads included with the room is A+ hospitality that I wish more American hotel/motel/bnbs would hop on board with 🎉

That's a nice little apartment. It's a bit larger than a camper, and also, you don't have to worry about your water in the bathroom freezing or your gas bottle being empty, so there's nothing to complain about the place.
8:08 with a stool you could use storage bins on the loft. You could also put a hanging rod. Most Japanese sit crisscross at a low table, even in a larger home

I live in an efficiency so this looked doable for short term living. I always enjoy seeing how creative the Japanese are. I also enjoyed your sense of adventure and humor. Sorry about the bar. You would do better than me. I could maybe hang for a day or two. Then I would start feeling like a sardine! And I would really miss my clothes dryer. Hanging clothes up is ok for my bras, underwear and leggings. I don’t love ironing that much and clothes out of the dryer are very pruney!!
I, too, wear indoor-only shoes; have done that for 15+ years. The only flaw was Cash NOT lifting his suitcase upon entry - those wheels have been everywhere and gunked up the floor. Bathroom shoes are a must in that environment. This apartment is akin to living in a type C travel van. Very do-able!

I'm a big fan of the well thought out micro apartment design. The bathroom with tub and shower is great. The small washer is a huge plus. As another poster mentioned the bathroom should have some button that turns on the fan to dry your clothes. I think something like this would be perfect for someone just starting out. I don't think it would work for couples.
Could have put the pillow on your back when sitting on bed and then put the table on the bed to use as a bed/laptop table. Also instead of sitting on floor, scoot table to the tiny love seats and sit there and eat /use table as a coffee table :) Something to think about next time, Also if you open the windows, sometimes there are a line that can stretch out to hang clothing.
I would life like that RIGHT NOW. I like this so much. So sad thats not a thing in Germany. Even if there is enough space I would prefer to life like that. Love it !!!!!
Great video! That micro apartment really did have just about everything you'd need. I think if you were living there for a while, you'd have to have a chair, maybe a camp chair, a TV tray, and a better solution for hanging your laundry. Also, sound blocking headphones or ear plugs, and a sleep mask! Can't wait for the next video!

That's pretty good for a well located Air B&B. Staying a few nights while travelling on a budget? Perfect. It has everything you need, you can have breakfast and dinner inside, which saves a lot of money... I like it.
How does one go about getting their first apartment? I mean, how does one actually make contact with the owner or manager of an apartment building, to ask about renting one of the units? Where would one find the relevant phone number?
NY should definitely allow this kind of thing. Small apartments like this can be found in many cities, including Paris. Though usually, you do have to share a bathroom. Having the bathroom and laundry included makes this tiny place great. I would definitely vacation there. I don't want to spend money on a room, because normally I only sleep there. If I'm in another city, I'm out and about most of the time. It would also be perfect for students. My least favorite thing about this place was all the little fabric things - like the tissue cover and whatever was on the toilet paper holder. Those things are hard to sanitize, that's all. But it looked very clean and inviting. I hope you left them a good review.
even if they did, it would still cost nearly 1000 which would defeat the entire purpose. if people with money stop coming here just to say they are here, then the apartments can go back to being reasonably overpriced
Steep staircases with narrow treads are very common. I always went down sideways in my Japanese house with one hand on the wall - no rail. The unit bathrooms are actually quite good and sitting in a deep tub with water up to your neck is so much nicer than laying in a shallow long bath with hardly any water coverage.
I owned a dryer when I lived in Japan, so they do sell them. I didn't use it often but in the dead of winter it kept your socks from being extra crunchy when they dried 🙃
The best ones to get are the washer/dryer combo. They are awesome, you put a load in, go out shopping and come back 4 hours later and your clothes are warm and fluffy.
This brings back so many memories. I lived in Japan for 7 years. The sitting on the floor, the street views and roads, the translation for appliances and hanging clothes. It was fun driving over there too. I still have to think about it for a sec of which side of the road to pull out from a parking garage, and I still hit blinkers and windshield wipers come on. The most embarrassing is when you get in the car to drive off and realize you’re in the passenger seat 🤦♀️😂
I never thought I'd see a video of you in Japan, even if it is a year old. Japan seems like the sort of place where it'd be ok to live somewhere really small with that. With so much local food and stuff out and about at really good (especially now) pricing, home cooking and stocking stuff really isn't such a huge deal.

This apartment is huge for Japan! I used to stay in a place just around the corner from there and it was just the size of the bedroom area minus the kitchen and bathroom area. This place is lush!

As is mentioned by others, Japan typically have a dryer in the bathroom or shower room (for those fancy places where the toilet is separate). ALSO, you can buy washer / dryer all-in-ones. 1 machine that does both. Remember, space is at a premium in Japan.
@@karenkaytor The 2N1s are considerably more expensive than the regular washers. THAT is the primary reason to not use them (outside line drying is the main way to dry here). However, those that do have / buy the 2N1s, definitely use them. Power is no longer at a premium (not back to 100% pre-3/11, but not as many -or any- calls for rationing).
hand your washed clothes in the bathroom. there should be a rod in there. and that thing on the bathroom ceiling is an air sucking device to help dry clothes quicker. there should be a setting in the bathroom to turn it in
These videos do a great job at showing how Japan had one of the greatest comebacks in the history of humanity. Everything about Japan looks perfect even the tiny apartments are thoughtfully planned out with great care.
Cash you should always buy disposable ears plugs. They do tune everything out. Its how i have been able to live in Manhattan over 20 yrs. When i travel i buy them too
That’s insane I have them, two different type. With a noise reduction of 33 decibels and I can still hear the Meth~heads and Crack~🐒s. When I live on the fourth floor with all windows closed. 🤦🏻
Love seeing the Japanese apartments. I have seen other people using those tables on the "bed" for work space. More comfortable than sitting on the floor all the time. And since outdoor shoes are not worn in the house, the feet of the table should be pretty clean so no sanitary worries LOL
Not that much, they take fire safety very seriously in Japan. In Tokyo, for example, open flame is downright illegal. But earthquakes happen and those cause gas leaks and stuff, so they're prepared.
I love Osaka but I was able to stay at a Hilton which was bigger than this place and had room service. Very fun video and I hope your wife and child are staying in the countryside with family. Take care you and maybe be careful going out at night xx

Not true. Many clothing washers in Japan have a drying feature. Cash is knowledgeable but he’s wrong in saying NO ONE in Japan has a dryer. I lived in Okinawa for 2 years and my friends apartment had a unit that washed and dried.

@@327legoman I know I'm late, but as a zoomer who makes $6 above minimum wage in my city with a full time job, I'd still have to spend 60-70% of my monthly income on necessities alone unless I decide to share rent with at least one other person. I don't even have any student debt, just a car loan I'll be done with in 2 years.
I don't much mind if my living space would be really small, I just want to be able to *not* be forced to scrape by in the event that I had to live alone...
This actually looks like a decent apartment, and a ok amount of space you could legit live in with not much worries if it’s just one person.
That apartment is awesome! Having built and lived in my own van for over 2 years, that apartment is so neat and has everything you need. People are way too materialistic, for one person you don’t need any more than this. I’d happily live there, I mean, it has its own bathroom and a washing machine.

I really feel like micro apartments would help a lot in the US. We should reconsider the size standards as long as it's understood that these must be literally affordable on minimum wage. Could get people off the street or just finally out of their parents house. A win either way. The housing crisis here is insane. I think a lot of us would choose a micro apartment over a $1200+ one bedroom that doesn't even have a washer.

I lived in Osaka for a year in a 25 SqMr apartment and it was wonderful. I arrived to Japan with one hugh suitcase and a duffel bag. When I went home in addition to these two items I had 3 cardboard boxes full of stuff I sent via snail mail home (it took them 3 months to arrive...).
What I realized after living like this, is that I can definitely manage with much less possessions and also that even in a small place I can accumulate quite a lot of thing (which I'm not sure I need it all).
One more thing: Japanese apartments may be small but they are designed very smartly and efficiently.

The bathroom is supposed to be a giant dryer; you hang your clothes up on the drying bar/line and then press the right button to turn on the drying feature. Was there a mystery button in the bathroom that could have been the turn-on-dryer button?
Japan definitely has "multi-function" perfected. I love watching the videos of the folding furniture. They are such a progressive country.
I like how Japan saves space (mostly because they have so little space) and yet they lack nothing! That is genius! Shit never dries in my bathroom or airing cupboard but this sounds like there’s is actually forced ventilation and the drying happens in a room that frequently gets wet anyway and the system reduces the risk of mould

Some people live in RVs and they are even smaller. The apartment is small but decent. It is cleaner and safer than being homeless. Major cities should have these. Japanese are smart people, always coming up with good ideas.
Dude, they sell clothes dryers in Japan. They even have some units that are washer/dryer combos and serve both functions. In addition, in newer apartment buildings, some bathrooms have a fan function that can dry your clothing when you hang it in there. As a matter of fact, the circle thing in the bathroom was for you to hang your clothes on.

Heyo, that was fun! In Japan sometimes the bathroom is also a DRYER ROOM! Heated air is blown in and moist air is removed with exhaust fan. There are also washer/dryer machines. Yes they do both. However, many still hang outside. It’s free and eco,
There are washer/dryers in Western countries too, but since they are basically useless, nobody uses them. They also aren’t “dryers” per se and are incredibly inefficient. They use the heat from the washer motor to verrrrry slowly provide a little heat. You also have to take items out after the wash, shake them and put them in or you will end up with baked in wrinkles. Both my washers have the feature and the one time I used it, two pair of jeans took 6 hours to dry. Gimmick…nothing more.
10:24 those are natural gas quick connection valves. There used to be a small 2 burner range there but the IH electric one replaced it. But you can plug a heater in there for winter warmth and keep the electric bill down too. Just remember to crack a window
12:34 that’s an access hatch for water and electricity for the apartment. That was a unit bath, and is an enclosed waterproof shell. So the main electric connections go above there as it’s easily hidden as it’s the last thing to be put into most apartments that size.
I used to retrofit these places with better internet connections for the owners of places like these in Tokyo.
15:10 there may have been a dryer setting for the shower room. You usually hang clothes in there if there’s no balcony.

Yes. They do sell dryers in Japan. They are expensive and few people have space for them. And women aren't confused by the small garbage can in the bathroom. Definitely big enough for tampons or pads, make up removing wipes, etc.

I love the neighborhood, which is mostly free of cars, even if the noise from the bar can keep you awake. If you lived there full-time you'd get used to it. The apartment has everything you need. If there were more of them in US cities, we could prevent a lot of homelessness.

@@ranarosatravels Addiction I can agree with but keep people with mental illnesses out of this. We are not without our opportunities. In fact it’s more of an income based problem that causes homelessness. There are plenty of people who work from both sides of the spectrum (meaning those society deems mentally stable and those it doesn’t) who work and can either make ends meet or have more than enough that they can afford to have nice houses and fancy cars and pay for their kids to go to college. The same can also be said about the opposite in that both “normal” and “not normal” people don’t have enough in some cases. An example I can give for the former is a company in New York (I think it was New York City or the article just didn’t say a city and just listed the state as this was a few years ago so I don’t fully remember) was hiring strictly for people with mental disabilities. I am autistic with high functioning so I don’t know if I could have gotten a job there or not. It would depend on whether they wanted people who would be less likely to find a job elsewhere or not. One of my family members shared the job posting with me over Facebook and had said I should apply. I didn’t for a few reasons. One I listed above in that I wasn’t sure if there were limiting factors based on severity of mental illness. Another was that I was somewhat struggling to save money at the time so I would have had some difficulties finding a place to live and I have no family in the area I could have stayed with while I saved enough to find an apartment.

That's a nice little apartment. It's a bit larger than a camper, and also, you don't have to worry about your water in the bathroom freezing or your gas bottle being empty, so there's nothing to complain about the place.

You would do better than me. I could maybe hang for a day or two. Then I would start feeling like a sardine! And I would really miss my clothes dryer. Hanging clothes up is ok for my bras, underwear and leggings. I don’t love ironing that much and clothes out of the dryer are very pruney!!
I, too, wear indoor-only shoes; have done that for 15+ years. The only flaw was Cash NOT lifting his suitcase upon entry - those wheels have been everywhere and gunked up the floor. Bathroom shoes are a must in that environment.

I'm a big fan of the well thought out micro apartment design. The bathroom with tub and shower is great. The small washer is a huge plus. As another poster mentioned the bathroom should have some button that turns on the fan to dry your clothes. I think something like this would be perfect for someone just starting out. I don't think it would work for couples.

Could have put the pillow on your back when sitting on bed and then put the table on the bed to use as a bed/laptop table. Also instead of sitting on floor, scoot table to the tiny love seats and sit there and eat /use table as a coffee table :) Something to think about next time, Also if you open the windows, sometimes there are a line that can stretch out to hang clothing.

I think if you were living there for a while, you'd have to have a chair, maybe a camp chair, a TV tray, and a better solution for hanging your laundry. Also, sound blocking headphones or ear plugs, and a sleep mask! Can't wait for the next video!

NY should definitely allow this kind of thing. Small apartments like this can be found in many cities, including Paris. Though usually, you do have to share a bathroom. Having the bathroom and laundry included makes this tiny place great. I would definitely vacation there. I don't want to spend money on a room, because normally I only sleep there. If I'm in another city, I'm out and about most of the time. It would also be perfect for students. My least favorite thing about this place was all the little fabric things - like the tissue cover and whatever was on the toilet paper holder. Those things are hard to sanitize, that's all. But it looked very clean and inviting. I hope you left them a good review.

Steep staircases with narrow treads are very common. I always went down sideways in my Japanese house with one hand on the wall - no rail. The unit bathrooms are actually quite good and sitting in a deep tub with water up to your neck is so much nicer than laying in a shallow long bath with hardly any water coverage.
What makes them work for me is you routinely shower and clean before soaking. It keeps them cleaner.
I owned a dryer when I lived in Japan, so they do sell them. I didn't use it often but in the dead of winter it kept your socks from being extra crunchy when they dried 🙃
The best ones to get are the washer/dryer combo. They are awesome, you put a load in, go out shopping and come back 4 hours later and your clothes are warm and fluffy.
This brings back so many memories. I lived in Japan for 7 years. The sitting on the floor, the street views and roads, the translation for appliances and hanging clothes. It was fun driving over there too. I still have to think about it for a sec of which side of the road to pull out from a parking garage, and I still hit blinkers and windshield wipers come on. The most embarrassing is when you get in the car to drive off and realize you’re in the passenger seat 🤦♀️😂
I never thought I'd see a video of you in Japan, even if it is a year old. Japan seems like the sort of place where it'd be ok to live somewhere really small with that. With so much local food and stuff out and about at really good (especially now) pricing, home cooking and stocking stuff really isn't such a huge deal.

This apartment is huge for Japan! I used to stay in a place just around the corner from there and it was just the size of the bedroom area minus the kitchen and bathroom area. This place is lush!

As is mentioned by others, Japan typically have a dryer in the bathroom or shower room (for those fancy places where the toilet is separate).
ALSO, you can buy washer / dryer all-in-ones. 1 machine that does both.
Remember, space is at a premium in Japan.
They still wouldn’t use both. Drying takes a lot of energy and energy is at premium in Japan.
@@karenkaytor The 2N1s are considerably more expensive than the regular washers. THAT is the primary reason to not use them (outside line drying is the main way to dry here). However, those that do have / buy the 2N1s, definitely use them.
Power is no longer at a premium (not back to 100% pre-3/11, but not as many -or any- calls for rationing).

Cash you should always buy disposable ears plugs. They do tune everything out. Its how i have been able to live in Manhattan over 20 yrs. When i travel i buy them too

Love seeing the Japanese apartments. I have seen other people using those tables on the "bed" for work space. More comfortable than sitting on the floor all the time. And since outdoor shoes are not worn in the house, the feet of the table should be pretty clean so no sanitary worries LOL

Not that much, they take fire safety very seriously in Japan. In Tokyo, for example, open flame is downright illegal. But earthquakes happen and those cause gas leaks and stuff, so they're prepared.
I'd stay in that apartment if I was in Japan.

I love Osaka but I was able to stay at a Hilton which was bigger than this place and had room service. Very fun video and I hope your wife and child are staying in the countryside with family. Take care you and maybe be careful going out at night xx

I think only hotels have dryers (which considering how many times they have to change the linens, make sense.) most Japanese folk will hang their clothing outside to dry

Not true. Many clothing washers in Japan have a drying feature. Cash is knowledgeable but he’s wrong in saying NO ONE in Japan has a dryer. I lived in Okinawa for 2 years and my friends apartment had a unit that washed and dried.
it is actually not that small, and that is probably all what future generations will be able to afford. Come to France, you'd be surprised, these are everywhere!
