Ok - it seems like a lot of people completely missed the point of this video so let me address some things: 1. I never said this is the smallest FF body - I said 'camera setup' - because at this time you can't buy a fast autofocus pancake lens like this for the Sigma FP (yes I'm aware the FP exists). 2. I never said to buy this exact camera - in fact I stated that you probably shouldn't - because there are other cameras that are cheaper and better IMO - I just happen to already use it for video. Seems no one watched the video til the 6:12 mark 3. The RX1R is a great camera but you can't switch lenses (I added the note at 6:30 while editing the video)
Sigma make lenses that are nearly as small and the camera is quite a bit smaller. RX1 is a digital full frame with lens. You didn’t say ILC camera. I mean if you want a 90mm the Sigma 90/2.8 is the smallest and therefore the Fp + 90mm is smallest. Making provisos just to suit you is and manaplaining it to everyone doesn’t make it true suddenly. Maybe this specific setup is somehow smaller if you set very specific goals, but your dumb title doesn’t reflect that, at all. Didn’t watch your video. Didn’t subscribe. Didn’t hit the bell icon for notifications.
For smallest camera what people call a pocket camera is the thing. But won't be full frame then. But still better than a smartphone. The smallest from Sony is RX100 VII I think, but you cna't swap lenses, but it has a zoom lens and the camera is truly tiny. But it ain't cheap.

Honestly, film SLRs up to the mid 80s were quite small...my Nikon FE with a 50mm lens is probably smaller and lighter than the Sony in this video. Ditto on the Canon A-1 I had in the 80s. Of course, they didn't shoot video and such, and they could get bulky with motor winders and zoom lenses on them, but it was quite possible back then to have a very svelte and capable rig.
@@porfiry I have both Canon A-1 (first camera to have Program, Manual, Speed and Aperture priority settings) and the pro F1n SLRs. My F1n had a motor drive and the A-1 a winder. @@butchgo6130 Those RX100s are really nice, just a little hard to grip. I had the model II and then III back when they were new, and I got pretty amazing pictures out of them. Now when I want small, I just use my Ricoh GR IIIX.

I completely understand that feeling of brining the spark back to photography when you carry one with you at all times - my Lumix GX800 and 40mm equivalent f1.7 lens is exactly what I need for this myself and once the images are processed in DXO even low light shots come out clean. Honestly I'd love an updated body but for now I am happy to enjoy what I have.
I'm using a Sigma fp adapted with a Voigtlander 40mm f1.4. It's a manual lens so mostly just zone focusing with the added benefit of being useful in low light places. Overall also a very small package.
Great video. I agree that a setup you bring with more often, will get used more often. I own a Sigma FP-L, which I believe is officially the smallest full frame. Many compact lens options, especially if you like shooting manual focus, but the auto focus lenses might not be as compact as the Sony. BTW, the FP-L is 60mp. @@MitchLally I picked up an x100f a few months back (luckily at a very reasonable price) for the reason that I was always leaving my bigger cameras at home and then not having anything on me when I came across something nice. Man, thank you so much for showing this Samyang 35mm lens! I'm in a situation where I really want a professional quality video camera, so thats why I've been looking at the ZV-E1. I also like taking pictures on the side for fun, like street photography and candid shots, so pairing the ZV-E1 with this lens is the perfect set up. This is why I think the ZV-E1 is so much more than a vlog camera that it is marketed to be. It has the same sensor as the FX3 & FX6, thus making it extremely capable of professional cinematic video. All you have to do is just invest in getting a G master. On the other hand, since this camera is only 12 MP, it actually gives a more 'cinematic' look to the photos it takes which I feel like more people prefer, especially on social media. Pair that with this Samyang lens that has character to it and you have some amazing stills.
LOL...I've been thinking the same thing. I actually ended up with a used a7c (silver for a bit of x100v aesthetic) + Sigma 45 2.8 Contemporary (1/4 Promist for some film vibes). How do you like the Samyang? I sort of like the Sigma Contemporary Series because they have an aperture ring.
Yeah the sigmas are amazing. I have the 65 f2 - it’s just not quite as light and compact as the samyang. I know that 45 is tiny tho. But when you feel the samyang it’s actually crazy how light it is since it’s all plastic. Feels like a feather.
I started off with something similar. My setup was the a7c and zeiss 35mm 2.8. The zeiss lens was actually quite cheap on the used market. Now that the a7c is a few years old it can be had for pretty good used prices as well I find.
@@unbroken1010 i see them as cheap as $1100 for buy it now prices on eBay. If you search locally you can get them for cheaper. That’s still quite a lot less to enter into the Sony full frame ecosystem than buying new. The zeiss 35mm is dirt cheap as I said and can be found for 300-400 easily. So for $1300 total you could have a full frame 35mm setup. That’s cheaper than buying a used x100v.
I might have to pick that lens up! Been wanting a full frame pancake lens. I have one for my xe4 but love me some full frame action better sometimes haha
Over the years of carrying heavy cameras, I’ve boiled down to a simple Ricoh grd. Yup, it’s not 16mp and it’s not the latest camera, but it does the job I want and that’s all I need for an edc
Why is the video not in widescreen? How’s the camera for photos? I’ve been worried about buying one as a hybrid shooter that it’s not great for photos? I got into photography at 15 in 86, back then it was all film, we developed our own and used an enlarger in a dark room to get it into photographic paper. It was such a PITA looking back it’s surprising we bothered.
I actually had a Ricoh GRiii on order before my recent trip but instead of spend 1000+ on an everyday cam I decided to take advantage of what I had already which was the zve1 and buy that little samyang. But yes for those on the hunt for a compact the Ricoh has to be in the top 3!
I often have my A7C in a small bag with me (and at times when I want to be even lighter the RX100mkI). I usually have the Sony 28-60/4-5.6 on, or one or two of the small Sony or Samyang lenses. I also often have an additional grip extension from Austin so my pinky finger also get some rest and it is also easier to carry the body in one hand with the grip, but it does make it a little heavier. I have the 35/2.8 but it was a long time ago it got to see some sunshine, so I will try your setup with my A7C and also without the grip extension. The ZV-E1 is a tiny bit smaller and lighter then the A7C but not by much so my setup should be quite close to yours. Thanks for the video!
@@mirrorlessny The 28-60 is surprisingly sharp and also stands pointing towards the sun without flaring, which means you don't need a hood for it. You can also get a decent sunstar at f16-f22 (without too much diffraction softness). It is very light. On the downside you have to turn into shooting position and then it protrudes and get longer. Also f4-5.6 isn't for low light or shallow depth of field. Though headshots at 28 mm f4 looks quite good (and have about the same uncompressed facial look as a smartphone selfie which people are used to these days). Summary: As a daytime lens it works very well. My small kit is the Samyang 24/1.8, the 28-60 and the Samyang 75/1.8. All sharp and light.
I've been on the fence about the 35mm 2.8 vs 1.8 (I bought the 45 and 75 1.8's when I moved to Sony from Nikon last month) but I just picked one up as a daily carry lens thanks to this video. Cheers Mitch!
The FP is smaller and yes you can make a smaller set up but more limited as a camera especially with only an electronic shutter. You can also consider the Sony RX1RII with its 35mm F2 lens. It's quite remarkable.
Great video! I recently picked up the ZV-E1 as well and am impressed with the size. Question: How does the Samyang 35mm 2.8 work for video? Is the autofocus decent? My Sony 35mm 2.8 Zeiss is great for photography but in video mode it has focus breathing (unlike the Sony 35mm 1.8). This tiny pancake lens you have is a fraction of the weight of the 35mm 1.8.
I have the ZV-E1 and the a7Cii. I can say, the Cii is a far better option as it's the same size, but offers far better images from a photography perspective as well as better controls for photography.
Rollei 35 is your friend. One of the smallest full frame cameras ever, with incredible lenses, whether the 2.8 Sonnar, the 3.5 Tessar and Xenar, even the Triotar isn't bad. If you can handle the zone focus and often broken meter, it is so much fun to shoot.
Rollei 35 is a piece of unreliable relic. I hope the MINT reincarnation could be more reliable. I'd rather shoot with a plastic EOS 300x or F75, both deliver way better results.
Bit of a random question but where did you get that strap for the camera ? Looks great so wanted to grab one for my own if anyone knew where I could get one. Thanks in advance if anyone knows and love the videos man !!
The Sigma fp is smaller for sure. Also no viewfinder. The Canon RP with the new RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens is probably equally small in overall volume, it's probably less heavy too. And it has a viewfinder.
did you record some of the broll in this video with the zv e1? if so may i ask what picture profile and mode you mainly shoot in for these on the go, kinda point and shoot scenarios?:D
Get video - again! And a nice lense. Thanks for the tip! I will have a look at it. 😉And finally one question: How long is the camera strap you are using in this video?
Definitely feels like the longer I'm into photo/video the more I want just 1 small body and 1 or 2 small lens at most. Eyeballing the Leica Q3 for this very reason, outside of 1 or 2 things it's basically exactly what I want...light/small/simple. May try to replicate it with a Sony for now, but I'm probably done with big and heavy for the foreseeable future. (and zoom has been dead to me for years lol)
been steadily downsizing my camera set-up over the years nikon d700 -> fuji x100f -> ricoh gr3x imo, if you can get over the lust for a full-frame sensor, the ricoh gr3x is the ultimate daily camera. no regrets.
Love the way you displayed this camera. Very into how hybrid and compact this camera is. Might be what I purchase while I wait for the Panasonic S1H ii.
0:28 With a backpack it is. I even bring a tripod. So wind won't be an issue, as I hang the backpack on the tripod. But it's not too heavy for me. But sometimes something happens and I can't take it out of the backpack in time. So might get a small camera if II figure out which one to get. I bring my full frame with 24-70 GMII on mountain bike rides. So for everything I will go for Sony A7iV, but something pocket size would be nice for when I simply don't have enough time to take the camera out of my back pack when I'm on a mountain bike, instead I could just take a tiny camera out of a pocket. But I don't have that yet, but I use my phone for that, but that's horrible compared to a full frame. I know Peak Design and others have back pack strap camera holder, but I don't want to risk damaging the lens or camera in a crash. Even walking I would be scared to do it. But some ride a bicycle or hike up mountains with a camera like that. It means easy access, but the risk of damaging my equipment is a no-no for me. So the camera you show here is too big to have in a pocket. I will look into pocket cameras. Have you considered that too?
Thanks for this video! Big fan of your work! Really considering this exact camera/lens combo setup. How did you find the auto focus perform on this lens for both video and photo? I’m a little worried the auto focus isn’t as sticky on this lens compared to native sony lenses. What has been your experience with it? Any insight would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance and keep up the great work! 👍🏼
That's funny I had exactly the same thought today. But I would go for the a6700 + samyang 24 2.8 to get it even smaller. I wanted to get a Ricoh GRIIIx or a Fuji x100v for a very long time but I don't have any other use for them besides the casual photography and the a6700 could be integrated as a B or C cam for everything else I am doing
As someone who shot MF film commercially from 1990-2000, I agree that the scanner operator is an integral part of the process. That's why I left film for the OG Nikon D1 when it was released. If you want control, letting a pro lab scan and save a JPEG is no good. As you witnessed on the Noritsu, they are "developing" the raw scan and saving a file (regardless of format) as a fixed entity. Unlike a digital RAW file, you can't just revisit and tweak a scan. That's why I abandoned the hybrid model and stop using chemical photography. Now, if you are shooting film, developing and OPTICALLY printing your work, maybe film makes sense...
I shot a similar Speedbooster setup with Fuji for a long time. Now I like my Canon M3 with the stellar 22mm. I really need to whip it out again more often.
I def keep going back and forth on this. The Sigma fp is light and has excellent video capabilities. It's great (maybe overkill) for my purposes. That and the Ricoh GR3 resolved my digital GAS 😂 Sometimes I'll to change it up and dust off something older like the Fujifilm X-E1, and appreciate a different experience. Digital sure has come a long way!
Great seeing you all just going out there and having fun. The photos will tell stories for days to come. I need to jump on this trend soon. Also, whats that filter in front of the lens? A mist filter? Unless the front element just looks that way.
Hey Mitch I do some stand-up comedy and looking for the best camera to start filming. Stand-up is always done in a poorly lit room with the performer in a spot light. Also sets can be anywhere from 10-60min long hoping you can give me some idea on how this camera will hold up or throw me some other options:)? Great content by the way!
i got a sigma fp. basically for a similar setup I completely sacrifice autofocus and adapt zeiss and leica m lenses. Sony has about 1000 times better autofocus, ibis, and video compression codecs but the fp has better image quality if you're a nerd about it. Also I have leica l mount lenses from the tl so it was the more economical choice, since I could get a used summilux tl and an fp for the price of the sony. Sony is way more practical I admit
I wish the description of this video decribed the camera that is in the video. I had to watch for a couple minutes to find out I didn't want to learn about this camera.
Could it be that the king here is actually a small film camera like Rollei 35 XF? At least in terms of background separation in as small of a body as possible!
Either this or just an RX1 mark 3 would be incredible for me personally. I don't need the interchangeable lenses so much but love the feeling of having an EDC compact with me.
zve1 is my main filming camera for my regular youtube content. Colour is better on the zve1 and also it has lut support and many other features the a7c doesn’t have for filming. If it was just for photography I might choose the a7c.
@@MitchLally Totally makes sense! I am personally really considering the zve1 for video and it's great to see such great results from its photo capabilities as well!

Pair that with this Samyang lens that has character to it and you have some amazing stills.
how about sony a6700 camera
Solid camera - came out after I started filming this vid
@@MitchLally I also like your videos, from canon cameras to sony cameras
Because RUclips / Reddit were built to hype FF even when APS-C or MFT is the better solution.
That little Samyang lens is great and so light, pairs super well with the Sony C series cameras too- just wish it had a metal lens mount!
Probably,
The video that will convince me to pull the trigger on the ZV E 1 !
Great post
Top priority was size since I want to chuck it in my everyday sling bag.
Don't forget about the 35mm 2.8 zeiss. The look and feel of it on my a7c is just perfect for an everyday non intrusive walk-around setup.
mate, been looking for a similar setup for ages, nice one
I started off with something similar. My setup was the a7c and zeiss 35mm 2.8. The zeiss lens was actually quite cheap on the used market. Now that the a7c is a few years old it can be had for pretty good used prices as well I find.
It's like 1200-1400 used.. Not cheap
So classy! Enjoyed the visuals for sure
That's a beastly every day carry combo!
Takes are spot on!
Over the years of carrying heavy cameras, I’ve boiled down to a simple Ricoh grd. Yup, it’s not 16mp and it’s not the latest camera, but it does the job I want and that’s all I need for an edc
Do you use the GRD Iv? or the base GRD model?
@@yingkaik GRD original 8.1mp the first version
@@ezekielkok1848 thanks for your reply! Got it
Why is the video not in widescreen?
How’s the camera for photos? I’ve been worried about buying one as a hybrid shooter that it’s not great for photos?
I got into photography at 15 in 86, back then it was all film, we developed our own and used an enlarger in a dark room to get it into photographic paper. It was such a PITA looking back it’s surprising we bothered.
Another suggestion is the Ricoh GR (ii or iii)... small enough to take with you everywhere, great picture quality
Thanks for the video!
how do you like the kit 28-60 lens? I have 35mm Samyang & preordered a7Cii
Nice vid Mitch. I find myself wanting a smaller setup these days too. There is nothing subtle about the R5
Thanks Ben! Hope you’re doing awesome man :)
I have this set up with the 28 f2 Sony. For portrait and telephoto I put the 85 f1.8 Sony. 😊
The FP is smaller and yes you can make a smaller set up but more limited as a camera especially with only an electronic shutter. You can also consider the Sony RX1RII with its 35mm F2 lens. It's quite remarkable.
Hey Mitch! You recall whether the lens focus/motors make any noise at all when shooting video? Thanks!
That's a film camera though.
Don't scare the digital crowd ;)
I like the Minox 35 ML more.
Rollei 35 is a piece of unreliable relic. I hope the MINT reincarnation could be more reliable. I'd rather shoot with a plastic EOS 300x or F75, both deliver way better results.
I've kept my RX1 (I) for the same purpose. Had it since they were first introduced in 2012. Love it.
Bit of a random question but where did you get that strap for the camera ? Looks great so wanted to grab one for my own if anyone knew where I could get one. Thanks in advance if anyone knows and love the videos man !!
I got it from the leica store. No doubt you could probably find a similar rope strap on amazon for cheaper
@@MitchLally thank you for replying !!
Nice one mate. How’s the autofocus working with that Samyang? Is it as fast as a native Sony?
It's great. Not sure what to compare it to but it's not slow or inaccurate at all.
The Sigma fp is smaller for sure. Also no viewfinder.
The Canon RP with the new RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens is probably equally small in overall volume, it's probably less heavy too. And it has a viewfinder.
FYI the smallest compact full frame camera is the Sony RX1R but coming in at over 2000€
I know! But I added ‘interchangeable lens’ at the bottom of the screen after I realised that!
would you recomend this lens?
Yes! Its really good
did you record some of the broll in this video with the zv e1? if so may i ask what picture profile and mode you mainly shoot in for these on the go, kinda point and shoot scenarios?:D
being using your presets for a couple of years now and love them! any updates for them coming soon?
I'm gonna do a similar thing with the a6700 Mitch, do you like that Samyang 35mm? Might have to pick one up
I actually think there’s some APSC pancake lenses that might work better since you don’t need the FF coverage
Get video - again! And a nice lense. Thanks for the tip! I will have a look at it. 😉And finally one question: How long is the camera strap you are using in this video?
Mitch - I have to know…have you found a workaround for the lack of support for zv-e1 raw files on macOS? It’s driving me nuts.
did you use any filter?
Definitely feels like the longer I'm into photo/video the more I want just 1 small body and 1 or 2 small lens at most. Eyeballing the Leica Q3 for this very reason, outside of 1 or 2 things it's basically exactly what I want...light/small/simple. May try to replicate it with a Sony for now, but I'm probably done with big and heavy for the foreseeable future. (and zoom has been dead to me for years lol)
go for the q3 or q2, you wont regret it
Real men zoom 😂
@@eirikskarstein9964yeah, let me in my mattress and see what I got during this disaster of a economy
Got my A6400 for this exact reason and just fits my budget best! Love the presets used in this video
been steadily downsizing my camera set-up over the years
nikon d700 -> fuji x100f -> ricoh gr3x
imo, if you can get over the lust for a full-frame sensor, the ricoh gr3x is the ultimate daily camera. no regrets.
Wondering what will be next for you buddy!?
Less about the sensor and more about no viewfinder on the Ricoh. Adding one to the shoe negates it's compact form factor.
Why not get the sigma fp?
What camera strap is that?
Thanks for this video! Big fan of your work! Really considering this exact camera/lens combo setup. How did you find the auto focus perform on this lens for both video and photo? I’m a little worried the auto focus isn’t as sticky on this lens compared to native sony lenses. What has been your experience with it? Any insight would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance and keep up the great work! 👍🏼
Great video. On what lens were shot the clips? Thanks.
I have the Sony 7c with the very compact Zeiss 35 mm 2.8, looks similar to your equimpent
Your videos are really inspiring! Have you had any issues with over heating sony?
That's funny I had exactly the same thought today. But I would go for the a6700 + samyang 24 2.8 to get it even smaller. I wanted to get a Ricoh GRIIIx or a Fuji x100v for a very long time but I don't have any other use for them besides the casual photography and the a6700 could be integrated as a B or C cam for everything else I am doing
Xt30 mk2 is insane for video and stills, literally same sensor that in x100v
@@bekerashes thought about that as well but I don't want to invest in another system, basically the same reason why I won't get a Ricoh or x100
I use the a6500 and 24 2.8 from samyang, can vouch for that lens on a sony aps-c body. It just feels so nice to keep it light
What's the camera you used to film this video?
How to get that filmic look
Would you say its much smaller than the Fujifilm XT1? I've been using mine for a while and I wish it was more pocketable
Thank you this video. What camera strap you use?
All details in the pinned comment! :)
Thank you.@@MitchLally
I love the coloring grading of this video T-T
sony nex-6 with 16-50 PZ or 7artisans 35mm 1.2, fits in my pocket and makes dope images!
Very nice content. Thank you for sharing.
Great vid bro
Great video! I think your one of the few people that seem to be using this camera how it was meant to be used
I shot a similar Speedbooster setup with Fuji for a long time. Now I like my Canon M3 with the stellar 22mm. I really need to whip it out again more often.
I love your strap! What is it?
Great setup and beautiful photos!
Is it a 1/4 pro mist on your lens?
Yeah I have a promist 1/4 on there. Maybe I forgot to put that in the video
I’m kind of interested in the zv-1 mark ii.
If you want real sharp a MTF Oly Pen-F will do. The 75/1.8 isn't beaten by any Sony (and I have plenty of their FF lenses).
i got a sigma fp. basically for a similar setup I completely sacrifice autofocus and adapt zeiss and leica m lenses. Sony has about 1000 times better autofocus, ibis, and video compression codecs but the fp has better image quality if you're a nerd about it. Also I have leica l mount lenses from the tl so it was the more economical choice, since I could get a used summilux tl and an fp for the price of the sony. Sony is way more practical I admit
same here :)
My go to camera for travel pocketable is my RX100
what's your camera strap?
I wish the description of this video decribed the camera that is in the video. I had to watch for a couple minutes to find out I didn't want to learn about this camera.
If you want film look to your image, just use vintage glasses with an adapater, like M42 lenses or old glasses.
Could it be that the king here is actually a small film camera like Rollei 35 XF? At least in terms of background separation in as small of a body as possible!
How did you do open gate?
It’s not open gate just a 4:3 crop.
It doesn’t look that much smaller than a FF Mirrorless like Z6/7 with a pancake lens on. How much does your setup weigh?
I'm hoping for a photo centric small full frame camera like the ZVE1. Interchangeable lenses, good battery, at least 24MP.
I think if Sony bring the successor to the a7c in soon it will be the one. Something tells me if it is coming it’s very soon. 👀
@@MitchLally It's definitely a good time for it to hit the market. Hopefully the EVF and screen will be great.
Either this or just an RX1 mark 3 would be incredible for me personally. I don't need the interchangeable lenses so much but love the feeling of having an EDC compact with me.
Is there a reason you went with the zve1 and not the A7C?
zve1 is my main filming camera for my regular youtube content.
