Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera became a star for albums like La Diva En Vivo. Rivera produced 15 gold, 15 platinum and 5 double-platinum records. Later, this songstress became a reality-TV star, businesswoman and activist. Tragically, she died in a plane crash at age 43 on December 9, 2012.
Rivera's parents, Rosa Saavedra and Pedro Rivera, discovered they were expecting while crossing from Mexico into the United States. Their daughter Jenni was born on July 2, 1969, in Los Angeles, and was baptized Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra.
Rivera's youth wasn't easy. She got pregnant at 15 by Trino Marin, and her parents booted her out of their house. She married Marin in 1984 and had two more children. Their union wasn't blissful; Rivera described their eight years as physically and mentally abusive. She still managed in this time to complete high school and college, studying business. But her volatile marriage led to depression and two suicide attempts. Eventually, Rivera left her husband, reconciled with her parents and started working for her dad's record label, Cintas Acuario. There she discovered a new dream, singing.
The hopeful artist performed in bars, which is how she met Juan López. Shortly after getting hitched to him in 1997, López was sentenced to six months in prison for smuggling immigrants. After his incarceration, the couple had two children. But López's unfaithfulness caused the couple's demise in 2003. While Rivera's marriage sank, her music soared. She signed with the label Fonovisa, and this up-and-comer's first record, "Que Me Entierren con la Banda," was a hit. The Spanish-singing Rivera soon became known to a growing fan base as "La Diva de la Banda."
However, her time enjoying the spotlight came to a halt when Rivera discovered that her first husband had molested her daughters and sister. He evaded capture for nine years before being sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2006. Then her second husband was sentenced to 10 years for dealing drugs, dying in prison in 2009. Despite these devastating occurrences, Rivera kept churning out hit albums and earning Latin Grammy and Billboard nominations.
Rivera's painful past inspired her journey from singing to charity work. In 2010, she was named spokeswoman for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She also founded the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation to help women who have been the victims of violence, children with cancer, and immigrants.
During this time, her fame grew even more after marrying former baseball player Esteban Loaiza and starring in several reality-TV series with her family: Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C (2010), I Love Jenni (2011) and Chiquis 'n Control (2012). On top of starring in these popular programs, she turned business mogul, launching Jenni Jeans, Divine Music, Divina Realty, Jenni Rivera Fragrance and Divina Cosmetics.
Amidst multiple professional successes, Rivera filed for another divorce while the press buzzed about unconfirmed rumors of an affair between Loaiza and the singer's daughter, Chiquis. Regarding the split, Rivera said in a press conference, "I am a woman like any other, and ugly things happen to me like any other woman. The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up."
In a catastrophic twist of fate, the 43-year-old star died right after that event on December 9, 2012, in a plane crash. But her music is her legacy; she sold more than 15 million copies of her 12 major-label albums. In a fitting tribute, her family had Latin radio stations play her song "La Gran Senora" (The Great Lady) on the day of her memorial. Rivera was buried on December 31, 2012, at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, California. Her father told Telemundo that legal issues had caused this delay. Her death made international headlines for weeks.

I love this! My parents used to deliver fruit to a radio station she would often visit, and during one of their runs, they happened to get on the elevator with her and she started to talk to them. Both of them said she was super humble and she even helped them carry some stuff inside (they were going to the same office) my mom worked up the courage to ask her for an autograph for me and Jenni took out a dollar bill from her wallet and signed it for my mom to give to me, which I still have to this day. When my parents left they said she even hugged them good bye.

She had just did a record-breaking concert. She was the first woman to ever feel that arena that night she did her show then she had a press conference and left about 2:30 in the morning to go to the airport. That’s when she got on her plane and crashed on her way to Mexico City to do La vos , which is the show the voice in the United States. She was one of the judges on the show. 🙏🏽❤️🇺🇸

@RobinSiwula-io8rdShe was a judge on that season of La Voz Mexico. Her mentee won that season. But she passed away prior to the finale. Jenni was late to the set and the show was live that night. Rumors started, then the truth was revealed and they still went on with the live broadcast but it was a dedication to her. Her judges chair was filled with the most beautiful white flowers. I cried that entire show. There are bits and pieces on RUclips, you just have to search.

How awesome of her to spend so much time and effort creating ways for others to escape domestic violence situations. What a beautiful mural, and the sweet story behind it. Rest in peace, Jenni, you made a new fan today. Thanks for sharing her story with us, and safe travels, Scott.-Joe from Joplin MO

Very nice and thank you for sharing this video. I had the opportunity and privilege to share the stage and accompany Jenni with the mariachi part of her show that she performed here in Albuquerque, NM on May 6th, 2011. She was very nice, signed autographs and even took a photo with us backstage after the show. Her stage presence was amazing, how she interacted with her audience and the energy she brought with her and sharing it with all of her fans at each and every show. Hearing the news of her passing at the time was unreal and very sad. She is truly missed but not forgotten. May she and the rest of the people who were involved in the accident be resting in peace.

😊 what a great story. My sister lives in Albuquerque. Tears ago when I first flew to visit her, a mariachi band was playing in the airport (sun city I think it I could be so wrong) at the bottom of the escalator. I know they were not there for me but I sure felt special ❤ my sister used to be the artistic director of the Albuquerque Ballet until a horrific 3rd degree burn over 60% if her body. Amazingly she had a -13% chance. She suffered this 16 years ago. But she owns her own studio and still teaches there. A beautiful part of our country. I hope to visit again soon ❤

Thank you so much for taking the time and presenting her with such love, respect and dignity. Many people love her but sadly many people from our same race, have spoken so negatively about her. I am a huge fan of her and I'm a local singer myself. I have the pleasure of covering some of her songs. I had the pleasure of seeing her live on 2 occasions in Mexicali, Baja California. I love Jenni and her legacy will live for ever. Blessed be ❤️🙏

I find it interesting that the aircraft that Jenni lost her life in was manufactured in 1969. Coincidentally the same year that Jenni was born. So the plane was approximately the same years of age that Jenni was in 2012 , which blows my mind. That aircraft should have been retired many years ago in my opinion, especially since it was involved in a previous accident years earlier. To this day, this very tragic and horrific event still holds so many unanswered questions about what really caused the crash. She was taken away from the world way too soon.😢 She is truly missed and her legacy will live on forever.❤

Very good video. I heard of her but only about her dying in the plane crash. But I am definitely familiar with Selena. Also, I noticed that in the beginning of your video, there was a bush with these magenta flowers cascading over the mural and I remember seeing quite a few when I was visiting San Diego. I took photos of them which I will probably post on my Instagram when I get around to it. This is one of your videos.
