This applies to music, literature, even videogames too. That said, I'd say the indie scene for all the above is stronger than ever before. The internet has been a boon to the growth of new entrants to the small-time stage. So actually, I'd argue that they do make plot twists like this - but not in the mainstream, you're just looking in the wrong places.
This is gender theory explained in a way that actually makes sense. They should just show this skit in the classrooms, there would be a lot less confused kids walking around.
