Bill Walsh himself says Greg Cook was the greatest QB he ever worked with. I'm almost positive that Cook would have been a HOFer if he hadn't gotten hurt.
Here's an old one for you. In 1956, the Colts starting QB was former #1 overall pick George Shaw, who suffered a broken leg in a game against the Bears midseason, forcing the Colts to turn to an unknown, second year QB named Johnny Unitas.
Great video Barry! I'd give a honorable mention to Randall Cunningham in 1991; He was coming off of a season where he finished 2nd in MVP voting and got hurt in the first game of the season. Eagles defense carried the team ranking #1 in total yards, rushing yards, and passing yards in that season. They didn't make the playoffs and started 5 different QB's so who knows what would have happened if Randall was the starter for the full season.
Yeah, it does suck how his career might be over. Think about it he’s 40 in December Achilles injuries even with all the technology we have can still be big blows. Aaron Rodgers could run around pretty well for men in his late 30s that might be gone. I mean damn the Jets never have any luck.
@@Mptappin12I don't think he will even retire. There's some reports that he wants to be back by the playoffs, although close to impossible, it has happened. Cam Akers did it in the rams superbowl run

I think Carson Palmer tearing up his knee in the 2005 Wild Card game against Pittsburgh deserves to be on here. Cincy had an outside shot to make some noise in the playoffs that year with a solid defense that took the ball away and an elite offense with Palmer, Chad Johnson, and Rudi Johnson. Then, he was immobile the next year and couldn't build upon his breakout year. By the time he got back to healthy, he injured his shoulde and wasn't really the same guy again until his resurgance in Arizona. If nothing else this injury possibly changes Bengals history, as maybe they win it all that year (stretch, but they should have been contenders at least) and he doesn't go on to force his way out of town in the 2011 offseason, and the team doesn't have a decade of Andy Dalton under center, and maybe with Palmer and those pretty solid teams they actually don't go on to lose 5 straight years in the Wild Card round.
I was waiting for Palmer going down on the first series to be one of them. Odd it wasn't. The Steelers don't win the Super Bowl that year if that doesn't happen. The other one I was waiting to see was Randall Cunningham Week 1 1991. That doomed Rich Kotite as a head coach forever and the Eagles went from perennial playoff team and Super Bowl contenders that year to complete crap for years after.
I do remember sweating that game because Cinci was putting it on Pittsburgh, then Carson got Kimo'ed. Knew it wasn't dirty because Kimo was a former Bengal, but it was a brutal injury. There's a definite chance the Steelers never make it past Cinci in 05 if this doesn't happen, and don't have six Lombardi's.
Barry, I'm shocked that Randall's injury in 1991 didn't make your list. The Gang Green was 1 player from making the playoffs, and possibly wininng the franchise's 1st Super Bowl 26 years earlier. They went through Jim McMahon, Pat Ryan, some kid QB Brad Goebel , and finally Jeff Kemp. They may have been an all-time great team with Randall at QB.
You know you’ve become an adult when you realize it’s not funny anymore to make fun of the jets curse and start wanting to see them catch a break for once
Hey Barry wondering if you considered 2016 Derek Carr for this video? Led the Raiders to an 11-3 record while being solidly in the MVP discussion that year, only to break his leg week 16 against the Colts. Not only did the Raiders look much weaker that year without him (lost wild card round to Brock Osweiler) but Carr never looked like the same QB as he did that szn. After that injury he was noticeably scared in the pocket & would make bad decisions constantly when being pressured. As most of Raider Nation would agree, Carr’s injury in 2016 completely changed his career.
Fun Fact: Similar to Simms/Hostetler, there was a quarterback struggle over Bledsoe/Brady. Many fans still wanted Bledsoe as their starting QB, while a lot of other fans also wanted Brady to start. Digging the informative video, Barry. Definitely a lot of what ifs here and really goes to show that injuries plain out sucks especially for teams that seem destined for success or a path to success.
While you never want to see that happen to anyone, that may have actually been the best thing for the team. Theismann was having a bad season, 83' was his peak and he was going the other direction. I’m surprised that Tommy Maddox getting hurt in 2004 didn’t get brought up since that kickstarted Ben Roethlisberger becoming a full time starter in his rookie season.
hey Barry, i have a suggestion for a video: the All-Time Tom Brady Team with Tom Brady officially retired for good now, and with you being the world's foremost Tom Brady lover, could you give us your picks for the best player to start alongside Tom Brady at every position, both offense and defense? you could even include the best QB to play backup if you'd like
Brady+Belichick and Brees+Saban in the AFCE for a decade and a half would have been wild. As a Pats fan thank Jesus that never happened, but it definitely would have been fun as hell to watch.
Hard to pick just one because he was hurt all the time, but you have to wonder how good the Chicago Bears could have been if Jim McMahon had stayed healthy.
I’m convinced that had RGIIi been drafted to any other team (except maybe the browns) we would’ve been looking at a multi time pro bowler and legitimate star qb. He was doomed from draft day, renowned cheerleader respecter Dan Snyder wanted RGIII, Kyle Shannahan didn’t which is why they took Cousins in the same draft.
Since you mentioned the Colts' history of great quarterbacks when talking about Bert Jones, I'm furious that you didn't include George Shaw's 1956 injury that made Johnny Unitas a starter.
One that was quite impactful changing the result of one season was when charles martin put mcmahon out of the season after the play. All signs were pointing to the bears repeating as super bowl champions
I'm surprised the 91 Cunningham injury didn't make the list he'd been electric in Philly and the eagles defenses with Jerome Brown and Reggie were insane.
Drew Brees and the 2006 Saints is truly an inspiring story about perseverance, love, togetherness, passion, you name it. Not only did Drew Brees come back stronger, but the city of New Orleans and the Saints came back stronger. Our team almost moved to San Antonio after Katrina, but we never gave up on our team and they stayed in New Orleans. This team, this state, and this city truly holds a special place in my heart. Drew Brees will always be my goat, this team will always be the greatest team, and this fanbase will always be the greatest fanbase. So I say this, WHO DAT⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️
I'm surprised you didn't have Tommy Maddox going down and kicking off the Big Ben era, if he doesn't get hurt maybe the Steelers don't have a 2005 Super Bowl
Interesting how the colts have one of the best QB histories and also have a lengthy QB injury history. Even Unitas had some later in his career, with him and Earl Morral splitting time in the later years.
The rgIII era was the last time I ever had hope for Washington. Still remember watching his legendary run against the Vikings in my living with my whole family.
Without finishing this video, freshman Troy Aikman of the University of Oklahoma broke his leg against the University of Miami. Aikman gave up his dream of being a running QB (the Sooners hadn't discovered the forward pass yet) and transferred to UCLA and became a pocket passer. His whole career does not happen, he probably doesn't get drafted if he stays at Oklahoma. Arguably, the best thing that ever happened to Aikman was breaking his leg.
Honestly I feel like an arguement could be made for Kurt Warner's injury in the 2009 postseason. Not only did it effectively end his career, but it, along with Brett Favre getting repeatedly owned, led to bounty gate being discovered.
I know I’m a little biased as a Panthers fan, but the Newton injury in 2016 has set our franchise back over a decade. We just got off a SB run and things were finally looking up for the team, but things went to hell immediately after that injury and we’ve been on the QB carousel since really.
Brady's 2008 injury only hurt the Pats for a year, but it hurt the entire NFL to this day. The league responded by beginning the trend of rules making it illegal to hit the QB with anything more than a stiff breeze--a process completed after Aaron Rodgers' 2017 broken collarbone. Defenders are now forced to defy the laws of gravity when taking a QB to the ground, and even then they can be flagged at the referee's discretion, because the legal target area is currently roughly the size of a postage stamp. The pair's injuries combined have made the NFL a less watchable product.
Lou Gehrigs illness is the only thing that could come close in terms of sports impact the guy was an absolute legend statistically and it was it was one of the most influential deaths that every one knew about and had national media attention and grief before the digital age except maybe Lincoln’s death several decades earlier
Drew Brees signing with the Saints after the 2005 season gives way to another huge what-if: What if the Broncos had signed him? The Broncos were fresh off an AFC Championship Game appearance with a great defense and run game, but felt they needed an upgrade at QB over Jake "The Snake" Plummer. Instead of signing Brees they drafted Jay Cutler, the whole thing didn't work out. The ripple effects include the firing of Mike Shanahan and Denver signing Peyton Manning in 2012. The rabbithole goes even deeper: If Shanahan's isn't fired in 2008 by the Broncos, does he end up as coach of the Redskins from 2010-2013? If his coaching timeline is changed, what about his assistants there like Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay etc.
I didn’t think the Broncos were in contention for him were they? All I remember are the Dolphins and Saints. Though Brees going to the Fins does mean Nick Saban doesn’t go to Alabama so no dynasty.
My prediction is Rodgers takes this personally. He comes back stronger then ever next year. Jets Super Bowl appearance will happen (I’m not a jets fan and I believe it) and Rodgers will be come back player of the year 😊
I'm a pats fan, and I still find the Brady stuff to be hilarious. Not even because I don't like Brady (there's a million reasons I don't like him), but because its just hilarious how much you can hear that Barry genuinely despises him. The only comparison I can make is Urinatingtree's feelings on Big Ben (which are honestly my feelings on Brady). Even then, those don't quite rise to the levels of Barry's hatred for Brady. I legit can't tell if he's playing it up or not.
I already know nobody cares, but the J in Majkowski is silent. 😜 Also, the 1992 injury may have led directly to Favre, but it was an injury two years earlier that I think really set everything in motion. In November of 1990, Majkowski was coming off a Pro Bowl year where he finished second in MVP voting to Joe Montana and was putting together one of the hottest four game stretches in his career when he tore his rotator cuff in a game against the Cardinals. Not only missed the rest of the 1990 season, potentially costing the Packers a playoff spot, but he was never the same after that injury. If the rotator cuff injury hadn't happened and led to that awful 1991 season he had, he might have gotten the starting job back when he recovered from the ankle injury in 1992. Hell, with a healthy and productive Majkowski in the fold the Packers might not have even traded for Favre in the first place.
The Packers hiring Ron Wolf basically guaranteed that Favre was coming to Green Bay and would play sooner rather than later. He wanted Favre badly when he was with the Jets, but the Falcons took him one pick before he had a chance to pick.
@TheAndyk123 True, Ron Wolf did have a unique desire to get Brett Favre. But if Majkowski stayed healthy and productive like he was in 1989-1990 pre-shoulder injury the Packers never would've hired Ron Wolf. With a 10 win season in 1989 and a playoff appearance in 1990, I don't think Tom Braatz and Lindy Infante get fired even if they do collapse in 1991. They would have been given at least one more year. And with Green Bay off the table in that offseason, the entire Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren/Brett Favre/Reggie White train might have ended up going to Tampa Bay instead. I know they were the other major suitor for Holmgren before he ended up in Green Bay.
Here's an interesting question - do you think if Drew Bledsoe never got hurt in 2001, assuming he stays healthy throughout the early 2000's and Tom Brady never plays, the Patriots still win a ring with Bledsoe at QB instead of Brady? I think they would've won anyways in 2001, Bledsoe came in during the 2001 AFC Championship against the Steelers in real life and the Patriots defense was loaded with talent. If Brady could win as a game manager that season I think Bledsoe could've done it too. If they still finish with an 11-5 record and don't lose to the Raiders at home in the Divisional Round I can certainly see it. Of course, Bledsoe would remain with the Patriots after 2001, as he had a ten year (!!!) contract at the time, but I'm not sure he would've won more rings in 2003-04 like Brady did as Bledsoe got older. In an alternate universe there would be serious debate whether or not Bledsoe deserved to be in the Hall of Fame if he wasn't replaced by Brady and he had a ring or two thanks to Belichick and a rock solid defense. After Bledsoe inevitably declines as he gets older and eventually retires during the mid-late 2000's what would the Patriots look like then? They would be just another team entering a rebuild looking for their next franchise QB. Would Belichick still be seen as an all time great? We would be talking about the Steelers (second) dynasty with Ben Roethlisberger or the Colts dynasty with Peyton Manning. Maybe another team also emerges as a Super Bowl champion like the Chargers, Eagles, Panthers, or Seahawks. As a Steelers fan it would've been a much more fun timeline instead of dealing with a plastic surgery merchant for 20 years.
I think they still win the Rams & Panthers Super Bowls with Bledsoe at the helm. After that it's kind of a mystery because Bledsoe would have been starting to get past his prime.
Belichick and Bledsoe were 5-13 together only thing that happens is Bill gets fired in 2002 and Brady either takes over for Patriots and goes on to win or he signs with another team and wins Super Bowls there only common denominator in any Patriot/Belichick success is Brady at QB
Sometimes, many NFL fans only care about the last game (Super Bowl). How about if we twist the question, like, can that team won that many regular season games with that quarterback before they became injured? Just a thought
I think the most impactful is Vinny Testaverde in 1999. If he doesn't get hurt, the Jets probably make the playoffs, Bill Parcells more than likely wouldn't retire, Bill Belichick doesn't take over as head coach of the Jets only to resign after a day and go to the Patriots, and finally Belichick probably doesn't draft Brady either

Barry, could we please get more NBA content, it would mean a lot to the families that were affected by 9/11
Thank you for including the fart at 13:19
you know you start the day off right when you see barry posted 1 minute ago
hey Barry, i have a suggestion for a video: the All-Time Tom Brady Team
with Tom Brady officially retired for good now, and with you being the world's foremost Tom Brady lover, could you give us your picks for the best player to start alongside Tom Brady at every position, both offense and defense? you could even include the best QB to play backup if you'd like
Wild tittle to see this Sunday morning 😂
Gayyyyyy
I already know Drew Bledsoe’s will top the list
The injury to Brady in 2008 also tricked the league into thinking Matt Cassel could be a regular starter.
I'm surprised you didn't have Tommy Maddox going down and kicking off the Big Ben era, if he doesn't get hurt maybe the Steelers don't have a 2005 Super Bowl
Banger of a video idea
Interesting how the colts have one of the best QB histories and also have a lengthy QB injury history. Even Unitas had some later in his career, with him and Earl Morral splitting time in the later years.
The rgIII era was the last time I ever had hope for Washington. Still remember watching his legendary run against the Vikings in my living with my whole family.
They had 1 decent year and mainly because they played a bunch of injured teams, which tricked people into thinking rgiii was a stud.
13:20 never been so inspired in my life
Without finishing this video, freshman Troy Aikman of the University of Oklahoma broke his leg against the University of Miami.
😢
Honestly I feel like an arguement could be made for Kurt Warner's injury in the 2009 postseason. Not only did it effectively end his career, but it, along with Brett Favre getting repeatedly owned, led to bounty gate being discovered.
Drew Brees for the Chargers gotta be on this list
Man Drew Brees's injury and the 2006 Saints is truly an inspiring story. I'll forever love Drew Brees and this team⚜️⚜️
I know I’m a little biased as a Panthers fan, but the Newton injury in 2016 has set our franchise back over a decade. We just got off a SB run and things were finally looking up for the team, but things went to hell immediately after that injury and we’ve been on the QB carousel since really.
Sowwy :/
I’m surprised Barry would been lot angrier about Tom Brady replacing drew Bledsoe
13:20 This dude shitted himself and kept going, true professional
1999 Vinny Testaverde. I can’t believe that missed the list.
@@jasonfire3434 I have no idea whether the Broncos tried or even considered signing Drew Brees, I only know that they should have.
Drew Brees goes to Denver and Romo goes to Saints with Sean Payton.
My prediction is Rodgers takes this personally. He comes back stronger then ever next year. Jets Super Bowl appearance will happen (I’m not a jets fan and I believe it) and Rodgers will be come back player of the year 😊
Comes back stronger and takes vikings to an nfc championship.
It’s ashame how many ppl just deny Michael Vick even existed. Easily the most impactful injury of a QB before Aaron Rodgers
Judging by those replays, I'd say Rodgers had 5 total snaps. Just one wasn't in the game plan.
14:14 BUM?!? He was one of the best defensive minds in the league before that
I'm a pats fan, and I still find the Brady stuff to be hilarious.
Also, the 1992 injury may have led directly to Favre, but it was an injury two years earlier that I think really set everything in motion.
I demand an update in 2038 once the Brock Purdy dynasty starts winding down.
Brady would have played no matter what
I think they still win the Rams & Panthers Super Bowls with Bledsoe at the helm.
Nothing can prepare you for the Wentz picture
Sometimes, many NFL fans only care about the last game (Super Bowl). How about if we twist the question, like, can that team won that many regular season games with that quarterback before they became injured? Just a thought
7:01 No one would be talking about Brady if not for this Montana injury.
A nice little toot at 13:20
As a Chiefs fan, I’ve always felt our karma for the Bernard Pollard play was us getting Matt Cassel..
just as your karma for making so much fun of the bucs in the 2020 season game came during the sb.
RG3 threw some serious DIMES. Wow.
I can only assume he missed it. After number 3, I just assumed it would be number 2. And that would be an appropriate spot for it.
