      I disagree. Robert Smigel drew heavily on SNL, and between shows like SCTV and Monty Python, plus the stand-up and sketch backgrounds of the other writers and performers, and Charlie Kaufman, Dana's show was very much of its time.
      If The Dana Carvey Show were on ABC in 2019, same timeslot, with the same type of lead-in, the same thing would happen. It might not even make it as far as it did the first time.
      Just as I'm writing this I'm thinking of Dana as trump, breast feeding. Even funnier.

    Fantastic interviewing by Howard here. He draws Dana out, isn’t bullying, but pushes him just enough to get the truth about how he feels. That’s skill.....well done Howard......not an easy thing to do when celebrities are taught to be guarded and not reveal how much they really feel. It’s a great interview because Dana has learned that although Mike built upon his initial impression, there is a friendship and mutual respect for each other’s comedy. After all, life gives us the chance to observe and comment, and to build resilience over small insecurities

    This is one of the best youtube videos and Howard Stern interviews of all time. Dana keeps it REAL AF and his outlook made me a better person after watching this. Also, Howard Stern is a master interviewer. non-arrogant confidence and genuine curiosity. I watch a a lot of RUclips, and I've been a stand up comedian for 15 years. Dana Carvey is level 10 and I'm level 5. I have some youtube videos that did alright, and that's it. BUT, I performed on the same stages that Dana performed at, Laugh Factory, Comedy Store, Improv, Icehouse, Haha, Flappers, the Dope Legendary LA Comedy Clubs. Just to say I've performed on the same stage as one of the legends, Dana Carvey, is something I'm proud of. He's a legend. Choppin Broccoli....... I sing it to my kids. Hans and Frans. Church Lady... well isn't that special??? George Bush Sr. and Jr. Ross Perot, Johnny carson! Well thash nice. LMAO. Garth Algar "Sometimes I wish I could boldly go where no man's gone before, but I'll probably stay in Aurora" LMFAO. His netflix specials are hilarious. Scientology bit killed me. the recent one where his son is mad. So much talent and a good guy. Role model to me. Oh and I'm married with kids, its Friday night, during a pandemic where racists are coming out of the woodwork and assaulting Asians that have NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW THIS STARTED, and I'm drunk. In Feb, everyone was celebrating a Korean director that won four Academy Awards and then we became villains. Lastly, Dana Carvey is a LEGEND.

      I think it is because he creates an entire character from his impressions, with copying the mannerisms of the person being of secondary importance to the comedic journey he is taking. Like with his George Bush Sr. impression, it ended up being so distorted from the original person but that didn’t matter because it was funny. Not many people are brave enough to do that.

    So weird to see Dana talk about this so openly now, because this rift between them over Dr Evil was an urban legend for years back in the day when both of them had basically disappeared from pop culture, and no one could get a clean quote from them about it. I guess at the time it was too fresh and sensitive. I remember reading about their falling out over Dr Evil and Lorne in the trivia section for Master of Disguise (turtle! Turtle!) on imdb back in like 2002 when I was 13yrsold, but back then youtube didn't exist, and Myers was at his peak but Dana had been incognito for years. Can't tell you how cool it was to hear Dana not only finally talk about this but also approach it so empathetically. What a class act. He's so right about Mike - he literally risked his career for Bohemian Rhapsody (the studio didn't want the song to be used for the head banging scene) and now he's starring in a Queen biopic. Times are weird!

    Wow, I hardly knew that was Dana Carvey. He has really changed so much in just a few years! Mike Myers and him were very coo, funny comedy teaml together on SNL. Lorne Micheals is an icon, he's brilliant. Dana didn't want to bite the hands that fed him. Smart move, Dana. Howards was trying to compliment him and to make him show his anger, but Dana didn't fall for it. Dana is very cautious and always seems mild mannered and a perfect foil for a wilder comedian to work with.

  • @fenzelian
    @fenzelian 5 лет назад +118

    Part of why this is funny/sad is that every bit of frustration that Dana Carvey feels toward Mike Meyers for things like this, David Spade probably feels toward Dana Carvey for things Dana Carvey probably doesn't ever remember or think about. At least if you watch David Spade's interviews with Norm MacDonald, there were a bunch of ideas David came up with and pitched to Lorne that Lorne loved but gave to Dana instead, since Dana was the big star at the time.
    The SNL environment tends to get fuzzy with the individual cast members "owning" their own work or ideas. It seems like the kind of thing that would eventually get frustrating and drive people out to do their own projects - which of course they do, and they're sometimes very awesome.
    But everybody does a version of the Lorne impression now. Bill Hader does a version of it on TV all the time. Dana Carvey had a time when he could have claimed it as his own, but he didn't, he kind of gave it to the group, and it must be kind of heartbreaking to see other people do it now when none of them are in the group anymore.
    And with Dana Carvey you've got this huge sense of missing out because when he was in a place where he could have been doing amazing movies and TV stuff he had some bad luck with it and then got gravely ill and suffered from that horrible surgical accident. And so every missed opportunity from that time period probably hurts extra. It can't feel fair.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 5 лет назад +5

      LOL, good point, I remember that with David Spade. That would be hilarious for Stern to go down the line of SNL guests and their gripes. I think the David Spade story was something like how Dana did TWO characters in one sketch and they only used Spade on the long shots. NOw thats gotta hurt. It goes all the way back at least to Harry Shearer being dissed on Begin. But thats the sad thing about both SNL and Hollywood, everything is about the pecking order and how far up or down the ladder you are, its not just about making people laugh, there's a whole industry around manipulating celebrity. Here people are ranking which of two guys is 'better' when in comedy, good lord, come on, for every laugh you got, there are at least a dozen groaners aimed at a different audience or stuff that just didn't land. Austin Powers was just too much caricature for me, the only part I found really hysterical was the catharsis of finally seeing a henchman (in this case his son) saying "lets just go shoot them". No, no, we have an extremely intricate trap which will slowly kill them... And it wasn't more funny because he put a pinky to his mouth.
