Brother. Installer here. That kicker would’ve been more than sufficient on a 12ft room. Just hold tight and ram it with your knee like it owes you money.
Guys, I just thought about using a car jack about month ago, but not sure how. I search RUclips for an entire month and this is what I found. I am so excited and I know this is going to work really good. Thank you, thank you very much Cheap Carpet Stretcher for that great idea and demonstration.
I have a better idea. The jack is make you so slow. My solution is use a door hinges. Hinges should mount 4' lumber to another lumber with 7/8 length of your total length. Just imagine an horizontal y. The shorter lumber under longer one will push your kicker. Just set and push down the lumber in top.
I’m so glad to have access to an actual stretcher… one thing I’d change is to get rid of the purple mat thing and just use another 2x4 against the base
The mat keeps grease/oil off the carpet, it's not support behind the base of the jack. But I would also use a block behind the jack to protect the baseboard and spread the load.
That's great, but very sloooooowwwww. You kinda had the right idea at 1st. Put the short piece against the kicker so it's up top where your working, long piece against the wall, & use a $2 door hinge to attach the 2 pieces together. Then you can make an arc like before & push it down to stretch it. You'll be able to move along quickly. But don't pinch your fingers off
Power stretcher! I would think about putting some weight on the kicker to keep the teeth from ripping out. I think the problem with homemade is the teeth aren't adjustable, they only work for low pile.
You make your homemade stretcher with teeth as long as you wish. This guy has spend $60 on a kicker so he hasn't really got down the diy route. I agree with you putting weight on the teeth. Looks like a two man job to me or move the jack next to the kicker so you can hold and screw at the same time.
I ended up buying a stretcher for $40 from Harbor Freight, never mastered stretching. I think there should be attachment for a long arm of BYO Lumber, 1x2?, 2 pieces, with an adjustable hinge in the middle, push off against opposite wall molding, much less skill required, especially for one person
I have a 4 ton autobody Porto power. I could place the rubber foot on the bottom against the wall with a rubber attachment on the opposite end. Then crank the ram. It is powerful and fast.
Rip off indeed: Carpet land wanted to charge me $250 to deliver a 20 X 12 foot carpet and the cheapest (if you can find one) charges $2.50 per sq. ft! I am 69 old woman, 5ft tall but I rented a U-Haul to bring my carpet home (3 gallons of gas it took) and I am installing it! This video solved the stretching issue; I just have to figure out the seaming (iron seaming or double sided tape seaming) Nowhere near hundreds and hundreds of $$$! Too much is just too much! Pricing abuse!
You don't need such a long 2x4. Temporarily nail a 2x4 perpendicular to your push direction and put your jack against it anywhere on the floor you like. That way you won't mess with your moldings. Leave the nail heads raised a bit to make removal with a crowbar easier. Use nails, not screws, as screws will entangle the carpet fibers.
Hello Random, Great idea. I am thinking of replacing the carpet in one of our bedrooms. daughter and her slim got the best of it...LOL. I thought there has to be a way to stretch the carpet without renting or buying one of these large stretchers. Great Job!
On my goodness not a bad idea but put a 2by4 at least 18inches long against wall so your jack doesn't go through the wall of damage the base molding!!! You can also rent a power stretcher and most carpet tools at the home depot or rental stores.
There's really only two decently made and well thought out and high quality is your Roberts and Craine kicker/stretchers ,yes they are not cheap but one job can pay for that if your a carpet fitter youll know what i mean
A recipe for ripping your carper. Carpet stretcher is supposed to have downward pressure. Bad idea . It may work a lot of the time but it will definitely slip and do serious damage too
Well if I were you I would have put put the shortboard against the wall put the long 2x 4 Dead center of the short one put your Mat down on the other end put the kicker top of the jack so that you can hold the head of the kicker down like you're supposed to and turn the jack at the same time
The Time you're taking to figure this out is not worth it. Go to a tool rental place and rent a strtcher. Knee kicker is a positioning tool and if you haven't used one you are not going to stretch properly and will have wrinkles in 6 months. You can also damage your carpet. Best bet is to save up and pay someone who knows what they are doing.
All that trouble?!! All you have to do is tuck one side & put some golf shoes on & jump towards the opposite side & tuck it! I've been installing section 8 apartments with this method for years now! & if you need a kicker take that piece of wood & a handful of nails or screws & insert them at an angle where they come out the other side. Tie a pillow around the other end & put some knee pads on & kick away!! I still don't understand why people pay for these expensive gimmick carpet tools my method works best & cheapest especially if you turn the heat up to about 95 degrees it really relaxes the carpet & makes it super easy to stretch!
Who got time to rent and return, park car, find parking, double park and catch a hefty ticket... to rent a tool. this is so much better, go to home depot and buy all the diy stretcher with carpets...
I was glad to find this idea because I did go to rent one and just wasted my time as not only did I have to go out of our small town to find one, but when it got to the big box improvement store... their carpet stretcher was broken so unrentable until fixed and they had no idea when and they rent their stuff by the hour which is kinda hard when you don't live in the city.
This is the most useful thing I have seen online all day. You just saved me hundreds my friend. Thank so much for posting this video! :)

I'm about to do a repair that new install lasted about 2 years.. eeh
Great idea. Worthy of an award, if only a compliment
I had the exact same idea. Well done! I like how you set up the jack. Trying this tomorrow. I already have a kicker.
Thanks for the video. Installing carpet today and only rented a kicker but not a stretcher, so you or creativity was very helpful. Cheers!!

That's a good simple idea, well done. I think I have all them bits, in my shed. 👍
I kinda thought of that. Great idea. Might want a 2x4 at baseboard behind Jack to distribute pressure. Thanks
Thanks for the great idea!I been racking my brain trying to come up with something and yours fits the job
Thanks

Youre voice is hypnotic.
That's great, but very sloooooowwwww.

Great idea! But my 1st problem is getting my carpet to adhere to the tack strip....
Ingenious, well done. Now I'm off, in search of a car jack and 5 metres of 4 x 4 :)
I thought this was going to be a silly joke but I must admit I think this was really good idea, thanks😮
I have a 4 ton autobody Porto power. I could place the rubber foot on the bottom against the wall with a rubber attachment on the opposite end. Then crank the ram. It is powerful and fast.
I think a bottle jack would also work. This is great because what they charge to install carpet is a rip off

Common sense solutions are rare. Thanx Bro!
I have a better idea, you can rent a power stretcher from Home Depot for $35 for 24hrs!
I agree But this guy might be on to something
Genius my brutha.....
Boss move. Incredible. Thank you

rental of power stretcher @ HD costs $25
great video
The car jack... Secret weapon indeed
Ingenious! ty for sharing!
I once made a stretcher from a pop bottle and a couple of used pop cycle sticks for some reason a few months later I had to call a real carpet guy
I wish the installer's rates were reasonable... WHICH THEY ARE NOT! Price abuse=DIY even by a 69 yr old retiree like me!
You are a genius
There's really only two decently made and well thought out and high quality is your Roberts and Craine kicker/stretchers ,yes they are not cheap but one job can pay for that if your a carpet fitter youll know what i mean
Fuck that id rather spend $500 on a real power stretcher and then return it
OH MY GOODNESS THANK YOU🤣😁
Nice! Thanks
Amazing, thanks, I will use a hydraulic jack
I am 493 like. Thank you for you innovation
That's a great idea!!!
Is your carpet still tight
Nice! Thank you!
Thank you
A recipe for ripping your carper. Carpet stretcher is supposed to have downward pressure. Bad idea . It may work a lot of the time but it will definitely slip and do serious damage too
The kicker needs to be much closer to the nail strip
Aye!!!! Creative
If you want a powder stretch carpet buy or rent a powder stretcher or just kick it in.
Is your name aaron roane?
Well if I were you I would have put put the shortboard against the wall put the long 2x 4 Dead center of the short one put your Mat down on the other end put the kicker top of the jack so that you can hold the head of the kicker down like you're supposed to and turn the jack at the same time

Please tell me there is part 2 of the video saying this is a joke!!!
No joke: tried and verified: works perfectly! Feel free to call a professional carpet installer!
Im sure you are probably using a stud as your backer, but have you experienced any damage to the sheetrock or trim doing this?
Put a 2by4 at least 18inches long against the base molding. You can rent most carpet tools from the home depot or rental stores!!! Good luck!!

This is such a bad idea putting that much force on the head of that Knee kicker can so easily ruin the carpet. (Carpet layer for 40 years)
As i was taught early on…qualify the customer not so much the job!
This is a good idea if you're a girl who can get her cheap husband to hire a 75 dollar Handy man.
Yeah but he's really not doing anything the way he has to set up
As a professional I don't recommend this
I should give you money instead..... 😂
The pro strecher cost $400 fuck that
Update: Inflation: $660
Lol. What a joke......
Lol
Lmao
OMG not pro.😮
Ya if you have 2 weeks to do 1 hour job
Ptss joke do not ever do this
All that work for 1 kick
What a joke. To cheap to go RENT a real power stretcher.
this might just be the stupidest thing I've ever seen! I actually feel stupider from watching it 😢
Could have rented one anywhere for 50$ 😂
I thought the same as you! 🤣🤣🤣
Who got time to rent and return, park car, find parking, double park and catch a hefty ticket... to rent a tool. this is so much better, go to home depot and buy all the diy stretcher with carpets...
@@sto2779 I say, its all about saving the money too. we all have jacks and scrap wood. this is a wonderful idea
People need to stay off you tube with these stupid ideas !! OMG Rent the proper tools
