I've argued for years that we don't need higher tax brackets, just eliminate all the loop holes. It is the loop holes that are generating the wealth gap.

We do need higher (and more) tax brackets. Someone earning $1M/year should not be paying the same rate as someone earning $50M/year.
And we need a wealth tax, too.
Some person or group of people, pay top dollar to have laws in place that favor them. It is no accident, the provisions are written by lawyers who know what they are doing. Loophole is the euphemism used to get us off target, loopholes are cleverly written legal gems that for some reason can never be closed. Loopholes are an industry for the rich.
It really is exhausting being an American right now.

@Jesse Teng First, we don't know that Trump's tax rate was legal. He is currently under investigation for tax fraud. Considering he wrote off "consult" fees to his own daughter who already works for him, it's likely there were some laws broken, but we will see what happens when the investigation is complete. Second, your admittance that the wealthy can legally avoid paying taxes through loop holes actually makes a plan to increase tax income... pretty reasonable looking. If a supposed successful millionaire/billionaire can get away with paying no federal taxes for years, and very little in years he did pay in, clearly the country needs to be collecting than we currently do, preferably from the people who are avoiding paying them despite having plenty of money.
Maybe it's time to re-introduce a variation on the theme 'No taxation without representation'.
De-bar anyone from representing the people that cannot demonstrate they pay a fair share of their income in taxation. Fair, in this instance, would equal what a common employee would pay if he earned that much.
You could call it 'No Representation without Taxation'.

As a retired legal secretary of more than 40 years, I could read that hen scratch writing on that tax bill. Attorneys' writing always looks like that. The word was attributable. I once worked for a tax attorney who hand wrote a typed 2 page letter on a small post it note sheet. Writing scribbles in the margins for inserts is extremely common in the legal field.
He is not actually broke, he has the money on offshore accounts via his son's name. That's where they need to look.

He doesn't, if that was the case he wouldn't be personally guaranteeing loans from international banks. That's not something he can just flee the country to avoid, since those kind of banks have the lawyers needed to actually chase him down. There are other assets which are his, but he's still listed them as things like investments for tax reasons (his house, for example), but they don't add up to enough to cover the money he owes the IRS after falsely claiming a massive tax rebate
That said, you're right that he's technically not broke. His money is all wrapped up in his company and it's assets though, no actual liquid cash to pay. The only way to pay the $400 million his company owes (which he underwrote) is a fire sale of Trump Organization assets, which would mean selling them well under market value and would gut the company

That's a fact. My father in law had a tax shelter called "JPSTIRS", which stood for Jerry & Pam Screw The IRS. He used it to write off every tank of gas, car and insurance payment, and got a reciept every time he went through the drive thru and wrote every single Big Mac Combo off.
Apparently the IRS never asks you what the letters in the abbreviation for your company stand for.

I am so jaded by people who say “hey, it’s legal” as if it meant it was right. Rich people basically make the law so it is in their favor. Ok, a couple things I need to get off my chest.
- Trump using the tax system to his advantage DOES NOT in ANY way make HIM a genius. It makes him a person who already had enough money to afford lawyers / accountants who knew how to play the system. He did nothing except inherit the money. People need to stop praising him as if he single handedly identified the loop holes. He didn't.
- The most disturbing thing about people saying "but it's legal" or "well I try to pay as little as I can too".... Yeah, great. But realise that now, this grifter who does everything in his power to avoid paying taxes is now in charge of the government that determines how much tax people pay. If you think he's not still doing everything in his (now massively increased) power to enrich himself, you're naive.
- If you paid more in taxes than this guy, then don't be annoyed with yourself for not having avoided it like he did, but be annoyed with the system that allows him to do it. When you walk down streets in disrepair, or wonder why you have to pay for healthcare, or complain that the government isn't doing enough during covid. Well if people like Trump weren't able to avoid taxes, maybe there'd be more money to sort it out.
- If you paid less tax that Trump because you don't make much money, and you STILL want to vote for him. Then don't be surprised when you have less in your wallet in a few years after he's looted your entire country. And certainly don't blame the next government when they inevitably have to raise taxes to pay for the huge deficit he's created. If you support Trump, then what you're supporting is emptying the cash register to give it to a man who doesn't even pay for the products he takes from you.

The core reason that he hasn't been paying taxes is that his businesses are failures. Trump is a loser.
I think would should be more in the spotlight is the bankruptcies of his prior businesses where debt was ditched close to the amount of his current net worth. He made a bunch of money while times were good in the 90s and then ditched the companies when things weren't so great. Trump's abuse of our bankruptcy law is the real problem here.
