I would also offer this alternative perspective. I never cared for PVE, but I was forced to play it because of all the weapons that can only be found by completing certain quests or raids.
I wish there alternative versions of quests within pvp and pve. For example, if I don’t want to do the VOG, give me something within pvp I need to do in order to earn the mythoclast. Not a perfect example, but you get the point.

As a PvE player, it's not FUN to get steamrolled by other people. We're not there to "git gud". We play destiny because the game feels good and feels GREAT when you're winning. I'm not a fan of the competitive dick measuring. I like working together with my brother to solve PvE problems. That means experimenting with builds and classes, and stumbling into powerful gameplay. Perhaps if they designed PvE encounters that trained PvE players for PvP there may be some more crossover and interest, but the skills are too different from each other as they stand right now.
Having to jump into crucible in order to get a useful PvE weapon or raise light level is the most dreaded part of the Destiny experience. PvP is not fun unless you dedicate the majority of your Destiny play time to it. I went Flawless once in D1 with some buddies, but at the time I was also unemployed and had hours and hours to get the muscle memories baked in. Like most things, if you don't exercise your PvP skills regularly, they fall off. It's not like riding a bike, and I don't have a $100+ controller that does everything for me.
The Innovation that you mention is Gambit. It's a combination of PvE and PvP. It's more tolerable than crucible, but it needs some spice or a change of pace. That said, it's still VERY easy to streamroll groups because the enemies have more hitpoints and deal more damage than the ones in strike playlists (and even heroic nightfalls). So casual players get caught off guard and "wtf?!" out.
Thanks for making this video, as I also think something should be done and I appreciate the discourse.

All the complaints about "hand cannon meta" this or "shotgun meta" that come down to game mode and maps. Been saying it for a while funnily enough that every gamemode feels like just regular Clash/Slayer/TDM and objective play is basically pointless. The state is so stale that people don't even believe support classes are a thing. I mean look how long it took for Lumina and Boots of the Assembler to get into the game in their respective seasons? Power fantasy is one thing but everything tries to one-up the same damn fantasy. That's why every little while they add a new shotgun with even crazier perks and stats. And lo-and-behold Bungie sunsets shit. They keep powercreeping.

One thing that needs to be addressed is “What Do We Do About The Maps?”. They are noticeably smaller than D1’s and if you throw our incredible speeds into the mix you get an environment where special weapons like shotguns and grenade launchers are the Go To items because they compliment the pace of the game. They are still designed for 4v4 and it often leads to network issues and odd respawn problems when four extra players are in the match.

There definitely need to be a variety of map sizes so that some weapons can shine
E.g the reason scout rifles are so overshadowed by hand cannons is that most maps won't even need the crazy range of a scout rifle. Along with this, why would you use a clunky long ranged weapon when you can grind for an agile hand Cannon with all the range it needs? Every weapon needs it's pros and cons, and hand cannons and shotguns seem to have none in the current maps

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Here are some of my opinions on this: aim assist is way too sticky and there needs to be higher sensitivity. 10 (max) feels WAY too slow. Servers need to be based on location, similar to Rainbow Six Siege; US EAST, Central US, West Europe, ETC. This would reduce the annoying problem of being matched against players who rubber band all the time but still map you with their telestos or SGs. Separately, this may be difficult, but there needs to be a way to detect and some how completely nullify the controller plug-ins that remove recoil.

    1) SBMM; each time I bring it up people shout me down with 'comp has sbmm play it.' I would except this is apple and oranges; I despise survival. If it were changed to control I'd probably live there.
    2) Map construction; every time Bungie speaks on things like shotgun rushing... it's not the weapon's fault you designed nearly every map to be SG optimized! Stop breaking up every sightline! Build several flavors of maps that allow more play styles. High skilled players have less issues with map design than a low skill player does.
    3) Map choice; Let's face it there are maps I can't stand and I bail on as soon as I see them.
    4) Add a technical mode; no supers, no power ammo.
    5) Add lot's of loot. If I'm rich I would be more willing to sacrifice my fun for others. I will join the game mode knowing I'm going to spend 15 min getting dumpstered if I get a LOT of shinnies!
    6) Stop forcing people to play. Period. No more quests steps. You are trying to improve the player pool without solving why it's awful. You are making people hate each other! STOP IT.
I could come up with more but these are the biggest hitters to me. Thanks for the content!

I've (almost) never lost a game where my team took at least as many Zones as I did, but I have lost ever single game where someone with ridiculously padded kdr and 30+ kills in the match took zero zones. Control should be set up so if a player doesn't help take a Zone, or help defend a Zone, or help defend someone taking a Zone, or other helpful objective-based behaviour (like guard/take heavy), their kills don't count and they end up at bottom of scoreboard.
I literally do more for my team by sui*ing off the edge of the map until spawn flips and then taking C so we actually have two zones, than my teammate camping outside 'B' but not taking it, who just sits there sniping opposing team, while opposing team has 2 zones controlled. :P

I’ve been playing Destiny since the beta of 2014 and I’ve never been a pvp fan. I avoided it until D2 when they introduced rewards to chase after and I had to learn and grow so much just to make it to 2100 to earn Recluse.. funny thing is after that I WANTED to play more pvp. I saw how much better I got and even my friends noticed how much better I got. I grinded to get Luna’s Howl, Revoker, and then finally Not Forgotten when I reached 5500 Glory. Reaching 5500 Glory felt so accomplishing and fulfilling. I worked so hard to get there and was so happy. Ever since Stasis has come out though I haven’t found Crucible to be enjoying in any capacity whatsoever. There’s nothing left to chase and no rewards for playing. I’ve tried Trials but can’t find a team that doesn’t have a .02 k/d cause no one will play with you unless you’ve gone flawless 100+ times and have a Trials k/d over 2+. It’s like the Gjallarhorn LFG days of D1. I still WANT to play pvp but I don’t because every time I do I just want to kill myself and it is no fun and not enjoyable whatsoever anymore. The combination of small maps, high mobility characters, and limited minimap/radar functionality rewards high skill players that can use their acquired comfort to maneuver and play aggressive. It is really frustrating for playstyle options to be limited and outclassed by a select few playstyles. The limited information from the radar system makes less experienced played feel uncomfortable and unsure in close range, and the few long sightlines per map are predictable. Both of which are easily punishable by experienced players with high power tools. Maybe dynamic yet large maps could help, maybe a reworked minimap could help. Right now it can just feel like you can know exactly what your opponent is looking to do, yet you cant stop or even avoid them.

So maybe some story progression within PvP could add something of interest for pve mains.

A few suggestions 1. They could rotate one old map each week with an old game mode. 2. Have a game mode with no supers. 3. Fix granades and melee power balance. Granades should be one hit kill within a small range. Melee hits should be two tap at full health. 4. Have a gunplay only mode with builds and power level disabled. 5. Have more Crucible quests for rewards. 6. Heavy Machine guns used to be fun but now get out gunned by specials. 7. Bring back special ammo crates.

I would say that your comment about only getting super energy with kills hurts non-pros. I'd also include completing objectives like capturing control points, etc. One thing that kinda bugs me is watching pros playing control who don't capture zones, but instead use them as ways to farm kills while scrubs like me are distracted actually doing what we're told to do.

@@strix620 The funny thing is you do get a small bump in your Super meter when you successfully take a Zone, but clearly not enough to incentivize people to play objective. Other is making it so people's kills don't get count if you don't help play objective or help teammates with objectives.

It would be cool if they updated the system in the ways you described, left all playlist modes up and see what people actually play, and remove/introduce game modes from there.
it would be great if they would revamp destiny PvP into a game that someone would be willing to play even if there was no PvE, and then do the same with PvE in regard to raid availability, nightfalls, lost sectors, story quests etc

i'm not sure if my input is still needed, but, here goes:
as a casual player: i want maps that are designed fundamentally different than the ones we currently have. say a map with a varied geometry that essentially says: okay, in this section of the map, shotgun apes flourish, and in this other one, snipers can show their skill, the rest, medium range. I'm just a lowly pulse rifle guy who shoots from a distance. perhaps i'd use hawkmoon or ace or thorn or sunshot when i'm feeling warmed up, but generally, I use pulse rifles because their effective range is what i'm comfortable with.
i just wanna try to hone the fps fundamentals that are transferable: crosshair placement and clearing and isolating angles (and transfer these skills to other fps games that i and my friends play; i'm the only one who plays D2). it's hard to improve when you are locked in a teeny tiny map where almost everyone's using shotguns. i dont blame them, they are just optimizing anyway. i dont blame me either, i just wanna improve. so who to blame? the map design philosophy lmao

A lot of the New Light PvP experience is getting killed by something cool-looking, wondering what it was, and finding out it's locked behind a paywall. I worry that's by design. This is what had me drop Destiny out of my rotation entirely. Every couple of months there's a new season, and with it new weapons. It's pretty common that new items will be overgeared, it's almost necessary for hype, but the fact of the matter is that as a competitive player it forces me to drop 20+ bucks for a game I bought for 60, paid another 90 for DLC, and which has even less content than it had at my time of purchase. The gunplay is amazing, the maps that we have are amazing, the modes (while simplistic) are amazing, and the community is amazing. The necessity to drop even more money on a game I've put enough into that I could have bought it 2-3 times at launch? That's not so amazing.

As someone who does both endgame PvE and PvP content, a big thing that I would love to see is the separation of the sandboxes. I completely understand and respect that this means more work for the team at Bungie and likely has many other ramifications but to be honest, I was nervous when they targeted stasis in regards to PvE. For PvP, I'm glad its all but dead, but this happens often where I get really excited for a balance patch coming to oppressive PvP elements, abilities, or weapons, then in the back of my head... "Wait... what about my GM or Raid build?" I think if they are able to do this, then there won't be the war between factions that you see now with the PvE community and the PvP community. That said, amazing video Patty! Loved every minute.

My favorite parts of pvp are comp, clash, and momentum control. Those are great game modes. I used to really enjoy control and iron banner, but my experience for the past few seasons hasn't been very enjoyable.
Above all, the movement is the real draw to pvp for me. It's worlds above any other game I've played, yet the P2P (I'm guessing) connections cause me to play faster than the game will register and I end up with a lot of missed opportunities or failed engagements when it's a factor. Obviously I need to keep working on my pacing, but when I have a perfect connection, it works perfectly. It causes some real frustration from time to time.
I'm most upset about the fact that fireteam text chat still doesn't work, and that it's been so long since a new map was added.

My main complaint with with the pvp/modes right now, Is the absolute overabundance of special ammo (possibly excluding survival, but there still too much). As long as your using a single scavenger specials weapon might as well be considered primarys. I also think snipers are still too strong/easy to use; and shotguns will virtually always be Metta with the movement speed and map design we have, but I digress. I'd like to see either scavenger perks disabled in pvp or 50% reduction of ammo per special brick (still a minimum of 1, and perhaps a change so all players with a special weapon always drop ammo).
Gun play, movement, and deck building are all extremely fun and rewarding aspects of the destiny sandbox. I do wish there were more options for gaining endgame rewards though, especially ascendant shards. Pvp should be just as rewarding to play as pve, and give you everything you need for maxed out armor. Trials drops ascendant shards, but it is too little and too hard to get for an average player, plus I have zero interest in ever playing trials.

Im a casual player and my 2 cents on the state of pvp for a lot of casuals is that its hard to learn how to play pvp when you die without even knowing where people are coming from, broken weapon/abilities just push that point. This is pointed out in the video, but also i think this points out the need to pay attention and improve gambit in addition to adding new types of pvp games.
I love gambit and for a long time it was the only way I'd play any sort of pvp and where learned how to deal with opposing players bc it was a 1v4. In the beginning i ignored invaders and let my teammates deal with them (or not). Then I got my first invader kills as i learn the maps and invader spawn locations. Then the guardian bounties asked me to invade to complete and while I said its a 4v1 a lot of the players are focusing on collecting motes or killing the boss and if not coordinated i can pick people off with a sniper or pulse. This let me learn how people move, counters, and how to gauge threat.
I know gambit is a love/hate it game mode but (for me) it a great entry point into some pvp while mostly being pve, and its a shame it gets no love from devs.
Another pain point is the geometry of the maps, and that's its a trial and many crap games to learn what is the edge of a wall vs what i see. Chaos reach especially feel like it doesn't know what a wall is.

I'll be real watching this video was painful. I remember the entire last year of Destiny 1 just playing crucible trying to get a decent Grim Citizen III and even after getting that one roll I wanted, still playing. I would lose weekends just having fun playing. Destiny 2 PvP now is exactly like some put it. I only play if there is a bounty, quest, or I'm absolutely bored. I can't even think of a way that would really make the crucible fully enjoyable for me anymore. I'll play regardless because currently nothing really scratches that itch. Amazing video though. I really hope Bungie sees it

Some of the best times I have in PVP is actually private matches with my clan where we go to DIM, randomize our loadout, and then just play a clash or rumble game with whatever we random roll. Super chill, just for kicks, very enjoyable. Highly recommend.

I feel like for the players who dont enjoy crucible, they can go play modes like gambit which is a good mix of both

I think a real easy way that Bungie could pump some life into Survival/Glory short term would be to introduce a glory specific weapon drop in the same style as the other playlist drops. The "twelve perks in each slot", but for a neat bow, for instance. And it should be the case that you could get them even if you're not doing well. And maybe if you're climbing the ranks, you can get adept drops of that, and even the other crucible weapons. It would definitely buy them some time to dig into the roots of Crucible's problems, I think.

I missed the question posts but happy to chime in if you're still taking opinions.
My biggest issue is twofold between cheaters/account recoveries, and ability CDs. First part I think speaks for itself, everyone knows what issues they cause. As for abilities, it kinda feels like everything is trying to be Mayhem and abilities just come up too fast. In more competitive matches, it's basically first person to a Super wins for their team. My best solution is to just make it take longer to build abilities, and also probably kill Orbs of Power in PvP. Let one player's prowess reward them individually instead of setting their whole team up to steamroll until the end of the match. I think if PvP was closer to Momentum people would like it more, since it's based primarily on gunplay and skill instead of who stacks the most mods on their armor.

Great vid. It is a bit frustrating that we are still talking about dedicated servers, sword peaking and slow changes to broken things in the meta. I honestly just don’t understand how they’re gonna nerf shotties and 120’s( I agree with the nerf) before they remove sword peaking and geomags. Priorities are not set straight IMO

I think all your videos are well made but this one is my favorite. I think every idea you pointed out would be a great edition to the crucible. Thanks for making this I hope bungie takes a look.

As a mainly pve player, the reason I play pve is because you can grind for new weapons. you don't get to try load outs in online and not get instantly shredded by the best loadouts most people abuse. I wish I would be matched ageinst similar skill levels as me and not have to go ageinst people that have 2000hours+ on the game.

I agree with a lot of things that you said. Excellent video and very well thought out.
I would like to see Bungie incorporate some type of weapon system along the BF or CoD line. You unlock the weapon, perks, cammo, and everything else by using it. Anyone can get the weapons if you achieve the specific quest requirements. You can unlock shaders by making specific milestones. This will put everyone on the same page and eliminate the frustration of grinding for specific "rolls"
Maps and game variety is an absolute must. The rest of the meta are manageable via the weapon stuff I mentioned above.

Thank you for touching on Trials. I only tried to get 3 wins but even that was impossible. I’m just a casual player trying to chill and try something new but I absolutely loathe the fact that you have to sweat every cell in your existence just for one win… doesn’t help when you try different weapons instead of running the same hand cannon/shotgun/fusion rifle

I think the other problem for the is running out of space if you think about it they are always running out of room because the game size is to big

I respect this video. I used to play pvp because it was more fun to grind then killing trash mobs because raiding was a 6 man activity in D1 without much of a integrated LFG yet.

We need maps that are more open or just larger in general. I can’t remember what the game mode was from D1 but it had vehicles and you could summon your sparrow, and it also had bigger maps. That was my favorite because you could snipe, shotgun, use a fusion, sidearm, pulse, hand cannon, scout, auto, basically whatever as long as you had a shred of map knowledge, it was awesome! In my opinion, we need better maps!

everything stated here is 100% hitting the nail on the head. . been on board since d1 beta, and I have always felt like we are just a grasp away from that full potential. But we always gain progress then lose that shine in a rapid fashion

you made some strong points that i agree with. Its gotten to the point where I almost expect bungie to make a good change and then immediately implement some game-breaking exotic or subclass change to put the game back to where its been for a long time. I want pvp to be fun. and that doesn't mean that my guns or abilities need to be more broken or overtuned than someone elses. I have been playing since year 1 Destiny and I want nothing more than for Destiny 2 pvp to be fun and balanced. I feel like it shouldn't be one or the other.

I think what I am missing now, is almost all of the people I used to play with that left when D2 came out half baked. Hasn't really been the same since :/ But the game and pvp is the best it has been within D2

This was a great video man. You put alot of time into this. I miss the forsaken days grinding for Lunas and NF. Trying to get better, growing as a team, just a little better each day, such a great time in D2.
