@@kidyubyub You are so right. I grew up very proud of America the melting pot where people from all over the world wanted to come here and live in freedom and assimilate to become Americans. At the same time as the songs of peace, love and harmony were being sung, the radicals of the time were sowing the seeds of seperation in society. Dividing people by ethnic groups and encouraging a distrust of any but their own kind. Coming into the new century, it's been very disheartening to see the radicals winning the color game. We are nothing but pawns, being sacrificed by people we elect and should be able to trust. Instead, they are playing by rules most of us don't even know let alone understand. Thank God, we have the music to remember that there was a time when people were trying to make things better, trying to bring us together and unite us.
Jamel, this is the original song, no one ever covered it as far as I know, it was one of my favorite songs of the late sixties, and probably my favorite of 1969. Tommy James is still performing concerts, he's incredible, you should hear his story, peace and love to all.
I grew up in Southern California. The San Fernando Valley. I first heard this song at about 8 or 10 years of age and still love it to this day. Still lose myself in it after 47 years or so.
20th Street and Guerrero...James Lick Junior High and Mission High...been all over the world and living now in Ohio, but, I'll always be *from* the City...definitely a part of the soundtrack of my youth, along with Santana, Jefferson Airplane...Thanks, Jamel, great reaction!
I was born in the Bay Area. A little younger than you. Growing up in the Bay in the 60s and 70s. No place I would have rather grown up. My parents were from a dirt poor little town in Arkansas. I used to tell them, thank you for leaving and coming to the Bay.
I am 66 years old and I was lucky to go to a lot of concerts in my teens. My daughters listened to my music and both said " We were born in the wrong generation- your generation had the best music ever". I think they are right.
@@bobthebear1246 ...... Not quite his last major hit. He did make a brief and surprising comeback when he hit the top-20 in 1979 with "Three Times In Love".
I'm a Baby Boomer & I have to say that the 60s produced more (varied) genres of music than any other timeframe. The talent that came out of my generation was enormous. I think it was also the 1st time international musicians hit USA soil... The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Cream, etc.
Brother, here's how I look at it, in regards to your back log of songs. Sometimes you get to the songs you were supposed to get to when you were supposed to hear them. Maybe it wasn't the right time before, but now the time has come to do so. Keep on keepin' on and spreading love and good music brother.
I 've seen him several times in concert. He always talks to his fans after his concerts. He lived for a time as a young boy not to far from me. Good man in music and soul.
Tommy James wrote this song around the time he became a born again Christian. He was inspired by several passages in the Bible (mostly Revelations and Ezekiel) where men see clear visions. He has had more than a dozen hits, including the mega hit "Crimson and Clover", but Crystal Blue Persuasion is the one hit he always makes sure he performs when he does an appearance.
Mirage came about When one of the producers in the studio accidentally played the tape of I think we’re alone now backwards...true story. It’s mentioned in his book. Me the mob and the music.
He was inspired to write this from a passage in the book of revelations. One of my all time favorites! I requested this about 9 months ago. So glad you got around to it!
I have heard that James wrote this song in reference to LSD tablets that were blue. And "Breaking Bad" refers to pure meth which is light blue crystals. James had a fondness for amphetamines and drugs genrerally. I don't think this is right, but the rumors persist.
@@saintmichael1779 From an interview with Tommy James: When we asked James if "Crystal Blue" is a reference to the Book of Revelation, he replied: "Yes, it is. It's out of the Bible. The imagery was right out of Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation, about the lake of crystal, and just what John sees. The imagery was just right there. 'Crystal blue persuasion,' although those words aren't used together, it was what the image meant to me."
Jamal, I love seeing and hearing your responses. I have known this song for 52 years, but the reactions of someone as youthful as yourself gives me a renewed appreciation. I enjoy all your videos.
This is one of songs that you go cruising on a laid back day to waking up on a Saturday back in the day when its house cleaning and laundry day. Mom and or dad either got stacked of 45 or albums jamming on the stereo or playing the radio. Even today in the 21st century, music like this growing up never gets old and it's never out style. Brother J good reaction to this👍🏾✊🏾
When I heard this song as a teenager I thought we were moving in the right direction. So much hope. What happened??? When did we stop moving forward. Faith, hope and love always. 🤩❤️This is the recording. I still have the single.
What happened is we allowed the government and the media to manipulate and divide us. I’m 67 years old and I have abandoned my interest in politics and I am slowly reverting to my hippie days, and embracing again the love and peace ethics. I am sick of the constant drumbeat of division from the right and the left, I don’t hate anyone and I try to see the good in all.
@@tomcartwright7134 exactly. Too much hate taught in schools disguised as social justice. In the 70s we hung out with everyone, got along with everyone. We respected our military, parents, police. At least I was taught to. And we always had Sunday dinner as a family.
IMO the Socialist, Black Panthers, Jesse Jackson, al Sharpton etc learned there was money and power in racial strife. The SOCIALIST have always said the way to destroy the USA was through racism. They inflitratrated the schools etc, while we were working and living our lives. My 2 cents of the basics

So funny to read the comments and find this because when Jamel talked about CBP being his walking out the door, down the street song, I heard one of mine begin to play in my head: It's a Beautiful Morning by TYR! 😁
I was lucky enough to see Tommy James, Martha And The Vandellas, Paul Revere And The Raiders, Etc, back in the eighties, here in Col, Ohio. Tommy James still had a great voice.
Man Oh Man ... "Summer of 1969" ... BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much Jamel! A little trivia here - Listened to a special a few years back on SiriusXM featuring Tommy James, and he explained that the song is all about "Receiving Salvation through Jesus Christ ... Amen."
This song is from a time when we were all trying to come together. We need that spirit again. This is right in line with your message, Jamel. God bless you.
Now this is absolutely "keeping great music alive." This song came out in 1969, when I was the tender age of 10, and really starting to get into music. It's in my top 10 favorite songs of all time, so thank you so much for this! Other great songs by them are Crimson and Clover, Sweet Cherry Wine and Mony Mony.
I was just a little boy when this song came out. Tommy James is an icon which my oldest brother got me hooked on. God rest his soul, my oldest brother was born in 1949 and I was born in 1960. So when I hear this song it makes me think about him and miss him. This is just great music to grow up with. Good choices in music brother. Also there is a live version of this amazing song.
It's a rare song that takes you to the special place of peace and love. This song is amazing and takes me to that place again and again after listening to it since elementary school, 53 years ago. Beautiful instrumentals and great lyrics.
Thanks for finally listening. I requested you give Tommy James an ear. He is so underrated it is shameful. He wrote many 60’s hits that newer artists also had hits with. He deserves recognition. This song’s message needs to be recirculated today. Peace!
THANK YOU FOR RESURRECTING THIS SONG. BEST SONG WITH GREAT LYRICS!! I think it was Tommy James' favorite song he wrote. The message in this song is timeless. LOVE IT.
Summer of 69 had some really great music for a troubled time. This song will always be one of my all time favorites. Such a message that we all need still today. Thank you for playing this and I am truly happy it touched you like it does for all of us.
Brother inspired by Jesus Christ and His purpose here on this dirt clod we call earth. Faith, Hope and Love for our journey here in those times including now, very fresh. Stay the Course, for we are just pilgrims passing thru. Peace
My friend this music is timely even more today than it was back. Then it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written and couldn't have been saying by a better group.
My Brother and I simply adore this song! Way back in the 60s, when it first came out! Thank You, Mr. Jamel, for appreciating this song the way we do! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Reminds me of riding in the car on a hot summer day, going to wherever it was we were headed with at least half of my parents 10 kids and a cooler full of food and drinks. No ac, no fm radio, just the Good Guys on the NY airwaves. The 60s and 70s were the best times to grow up.
I was 17 when this song came out. Tommy James and the Shondells were one of my most favorite bands. Haven't heard that song in a while. Glad I heard it and watched it with you!
Thank you! I was 22yrs when this come out, I'm 73 now, seen a lot in my life time, got married at seventeen, we are a interracial marriage,..beautiful message in this song, brings back memories.
I seen Tom James on the 700 Club a few years back and Tommy said that the song was about the Lord Jesus Christ. I thought that was intriguing. I would have never guess, but upon reflection I can hear it.
The crystal blue persuasion spoken of is the blue "Truth" 192-page book published by Jehovah's Witnesses. Many a person at that time were persuaded to study the deep message of the Bible after reading and studying the scriptural truths found in this book (to be read and studied along with your copy of the Bible).
According to James's manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light representing the presence of the Almighty God - and also Tommy's readings from Isaiah and Revelation - telling of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living in peace and harmony. (Wikipedia)
Yes, I asked you to listened to this a few weeks ago. Glad you got to it. '69 - same year as Woodstock and awareness of the environment and pollution were on top of a lot of minds, so the 1st Earth Day was being planned for '70. I was 12 and protesting Vietnam and playing badminton in the backyard with this playing on the radio. It was on all the time. One of our favorite songs to sing to. Sure takes me back. Love it.
This is my favorite song...every time I hear it I am back in time 11yrs old playing on the beach listening to my transistor radio hearing this beautiful song for the first time.
Thousands have no idea Tommy James is a young (when the song was written) white kid from the suburbs of Detroit after he had traveled the U.S. and Europe than started writing with all of those influences. As he has said, "Not that skin color or background matter as much as your soul and where you go beyond..."
"Something in the Air" by Thunderclap Newman is another song right in the same wheelhouse. A number of people have mentioned Tommy James' solo song "Draggin' the Line". That's a great one too. ✌
Two days after 9/11 in 2001 I was driving home from work. Like all Americans I was upset, scared, and absolutely reeling with what had taken place in NY, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania. As a father of two small children, I was worried about what the events just a couple of days earlier would mean to them. As I drove down the highway that afternoon, this song came over the radio. With its theme of "peace and good, brotherhood" it somehow have me hope that things were going to be ok. I'm not ashamed to say that I literally teared up and cried that afternoon. To this day, this song has a special place in my heart. I'm glad it has finally touched you as well, Jamel.
This songs is warm summer nights. Hanging out in the park with friends. Car stereos blasting this song and everyone singing. I was the time of my life. I miss it so much.
In an interview that I watched, Tommy James was asked about the meaning of this song. He said that he wrote it after accepting Christ as his personal Saviour. That statement brought me an even greater appreciation of both Tommy and the song.
Hi Jamal, thanks for doing this song reaction. Many people don't know Tommy's background, however, he was ripped off big time for his record royalties. It turns out that the record company that he initially signed with, Roulette Records, was owned by the mafia back in the 60's. Tommy wrote a book about it. Since many people are listing a number of The Shondells songs below in the comment section, I wanted to pass along a whole list of their music in one comment. Tommy James was a great song writer and I think you'll find many gems here if you've never heard of them before. 1) Out Of The Blue 2) Hanky Panky 3) Run Run Baby Run 4) Somebody Cares 5) I Like The Way 6) Gettin' Together 7) Real Girl 8) Mony Mony 9) Mirage 10) I Think We're Alone 11) Sweet Cherry Wine 12) Balls Of Fire 13) She (Great Tune!) 14) Draggin' The Line ( Was a smash hit bar song in the day). 15) Crimson And Clover 16) I'm Alive 17) Loved One 18) Crystal Blue Persuasion 19) THREE TIMES IN LOVE (This was a great solo hit song released in '79. (Great Tune!). Enjoy!
This was a song played on AFVN radio in Vietnam one night in July of 1969. I was on OP10 southwest of Danang, and about 9 pm the VC hit us with mortars and automatic weapons, and it was so strange to listen to this song while this attack was going on. Still comes back to me in dreams every so often. It's a great song.

I'm 50, Generation X, and I looked UP to you Baby Boomers. I LOVED your message as a child and still hold it dear.
One of the most beautiful songs of the rock era. Takes one to a better place. Timeless.
You are the man. I’m 72 from San Francisco and this song brings back good memories. Thank you. Jamel
I grew up in Southern California. The San Fernando Valley. I first heard this song at about 8 or 10 years of age and still love it to this day. Still lose myself in it after 47 years or so.
I’m in San Jose and my 29 year old has this on one of his playlists ~ this momma is so proud 🥲
THEY ARE!!
Draggin' The Line is another great song of their's!
Was that a "line of cocaine"? Remember what was going on back then with "experimentation with mind-altering substances", as I heard it.
@@tenhirankei the song was about working everyday from my understanding.
Actually, it was just Tommy James solo at this point, and was his final major hit, in 1971. Great song!!
That was a good fong too.
@@bobthebear1246 ......
Not quite his last major hit.
He did make a brief and surprising
comeback when he hit the top-20
in 1979 with "Three Times In Love".
1969 was an amazing year of profound music. War, chaos, made folks feel n think about why.
The message was sent like 50 years. Now, we gotta do it again. The world is in a worse situation than when they made this song
We need Jesus. A revival is around the corner, keep the faith.
The "Golden Age" is about to arrive! That's what this song is singing about, and it's almost here. Peace!
You forgot The Beach Boys and The Bee Gees.
No truer words have been spoken..
Brother, here's how I look at it, in regards to your back log of songs. Sometimes you get to the songs you were supposed to get to when you were supposed to hear them. Maybe it wasn't the right time before, but now the time has come to do so. Keep on keepin' on and spreading love and good music brother.
Boy Matthew - I think you nailed it and I hope Jamel reads your comment!!!
I was thinking the same thing. It was meant to be at this moment in time.
@@auntytutu Amen Aunty!!
Yup, this statement is it👍
Tommy James doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He has said that this is the only song he ever wrote that he could truly say he was proud of.
I never hear his name in rock and roll hall of fame discussions either. Just the covers of his songs should have him there if nothing else.
Should be in RRHOF.
I 've seen him several times in concert. He always talks to his fans after his concerts. He lived for a time as a young boy not to far from me. Good man in music and soul.
Tejas Rob,damn straight.Fact.
Saw TJ and the Shondells a couple of years ago, he sounds just as good now as he did then. He deserves his spot in the R&R Hall of Fame!!
He's not in the hall? What that's madness
"I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mirage" are gems!
Wonder if he knows Tiffanys cover of I think we are alone now.. tommy James original is better tho imo
John Lampkins WAAAYYYY better!
Mirage came about When one of the producers in the studio accidentally played the tape of I think we’re alone now backwards...true story.
It’s mentioned in his book. Me the mob and the music.
Mirage, yeah.
Loved Mirage.
Anything Tommy James does is great. The music I grew up on.
Me too. Love it!!!!!
He was inspired to write this from a passage in the book of revelations. One of my all time favorites! I requested this about 9 months ago. So glad you got around to it!
WOW! Never knew that!
Me too!
@@wendywallace4614 Exactly right those words are from Revelations. It's about spirituality and peace not drug use
Brother J good reaction to this👍🏾✊🏾
I love how you just seem to grasp the depth and the meaning of these songs. That’s a rare skill Jamel!❤️
Album and single.
@@tomcartwright7134 exactly. Too much hate taught in schools disguised as social justice. In the 70s we hung out with everyone, got along with everyone. We respected our military, parents, police. At least I was taught to. And we always had Sunday dinner as a family.
@@tomcartwright7134 exactly I just going to be 67 in July and I say the same think government and media worst seed they’ve planting in our kids
Another hippie anthem! My mom wouldn’t let me be a hippie. But she couldn’t stop my heart!
Everything in the 60's was Peace and Love and Pot!!!! it was a new generation!
Try Mony Mony or Dragging the Line by Tommy.
He is still rocks in concerts
I love dragging the line!!
Draggin the line is one of my favorites
You might know Billy Idols cover of mony mony... tommy james did the original

I wish I could like this comment in bold or with exclamation points. LOL
Love this song! Crimson and Clover is another nice one 👍🏼
Songs of the late 60's and 70's often are still relevant, especially today
Listening to Tommy James since I was 14. I am 65 today. My my favorite Tommy James song.
I feel like this dude is like a brother and a dear friend. We are cut from the exact same cloth as far as our outlook on life. Peace and love. Its the only way.
A great classic👍
Tommy James and the Shondells
- Crimson and Clover
- Draggin' the Line
- Hanky Panky
Add 'She' to that list
add Sweet Cherry Wine to that list
Mony Mony, and then Billy Idol's cover!
Yup. Those would great follow-ups.
Tommy also produced the song: Tighter Tighter by Alive 'N Kickin'.
The Rascals...”Groovin” “It’s a beautiful morning” “A girl like you” “I’ve been lonely too long”
“How Can I Be Sure?” Another great Rascals song.
Heaven is one that did not make it to the radio, it is a great song!
I also like “Rainy Day” by them.
I haven't heard those songs in forever! Please and yes!
From the 60's.....I'm a black female musician and a '56 baby...always Loved this tune!!!🎵🎹🎵
This was my favorite song when I was 12 years old. Even today it takes my spirit and soul to a beautiful place. Love this song and its message.
From an era when they protested war and violence with signs of daisies, what a contrast.
I am 69 and love hearing these old songs.I still listen to vinyl.I was listening to Best of Dick Clark's American Band Stand today.love it!!!
Its still relevant because those of us that listened to this are still alive and oh yeah kicking
I haven’t heard this in a minute and it’s WAY more beautiful through headphones! Wow! ❤️
Agree! Harmony is great!
Oh man this brings back childhood memories of sitting in the basement listening to my parents old albums
Will forever and always remind me of a warm summer afternoon in Fresno. I'm sure it reminds others where they were grooving to this
Thanks for finally listening. I requested you give Tommy James an ear. He is so underrated it is shameful. He wrote many 60’s hits that newer artists also had hits with. He deserves recognition. This song’s message needs to be recirculated today. Peace!
This song is tripping but it’s so unique & well done. The vocals are great & well harmonized. Love it❣️
THANK YOU FOR RESURRECTING THIS SONG. BEST SONG WITH GREAT LYRICS!!
I think it was Tommy James' favorite song he wrote.
The message in this song is timeless.

This is gen-u-wine hippie music extolling the ideals of the movement.
I remember sittin' on the beach listening to this on a transistor radio...
Reminds me of riding in the car on a hot summer day, going to wherever it was we were headed with at least half of my parents 10 kids and a cooler full of food and drinks. No ac, no fm radio, just the Good Guys on the NY airwaves. The 60s and 70s were the best times to grow up.
More Tommy James: "Draggin' The Line" and "Crimson And Clover."
That's cool, really cool, never knew that!
@@Surfishy888 Absolutely! You got that right.
Hey all you have to do is listen to the words!!!
@@Surfishy888 No. IOt had no affiliation with Jehovah's Witnesses. Tommy James explains its basis on a 700 Club video you can watch on RUclips.
Apparently Tommy James has said the song is about his conversion to Christianity.
Did Tommy find him in prison? That is where most people find Jesus, I think he is doing time for impersonating a deity.

I love that one🥰
This song is about the saving blood of Jesus according to Tommy James!!! Giddeeup!!!!
Thousands have no idea Tommy James is a young (when the song was written) white kid from the suburbs of Detroit after he had traveled the U.S. and Europe than started writing with all of those influences. As he has said, "Not that skin color or background matter as much as your soul and where you go beyond..."
I'm one of them. I had no idea how talented he was. 💓
He was in his early 20's when the song was written.
"Something in the Air" by Thunderclap Newman is another song right in the same wheelhouse. A number of people have mentioned Tommy James' solo song "Draggin' the Line". That's a great one too. ✌

@@loilt5091 Me too, I had this song on a KTel record.
Two songs came to mind that day for me. 1 crystal blue persuasion and 2 what the world needs now.

Hi Jamal, thanks for doing this song reaction. Many people don't know Tommy's background, however, he was ripped off
big time for his record royalties. It turns out that the record company that he initially signed with, Roulette Records, was
