In the book Musashi was never surronded. He kept moving like a devil, striking at unaware foes wounding or killing them. All the Yoshioka students were trying to attack and encircle him but he was fast enough to avoid that. Only at the very end when encirclement was about to happen did Musashi disengage and run like hell. Sounds more realistic than this - although the series has its own charm too.

just going by the way it's filmed, the sword is straight, then in the next shot it's bent. There's no way they would have not notice it was bent before calling action so it must be intentional. He notices his sword is bent, calmly bends it back, then turns to leave, all the while more opponents are standing there afraid to attack him.

Japan was a small country with the propensity to record every matter concerning Samurai matters, and I believe there was a claim by his student in the Nitenki which was never disputed by other contemporaries. Samurai births and deaths, and issues related to honour could not be misrepresented back in that era. But remember, in reality he was a 6 ft giant, strong enough to wield 2 long swords, and the average Japanese back then was barely 5ft tall, and so it makes it far more believable when we consider his absolutely advantage, and how he'd tower over their heads and have a great tactical view of everything.

@@cjohnson3836 Well you are quite ridiculous because you are judging based on 21st Century Western standards. In 16th Century Japan, the Samurai were the government, and we have official records of Musashi serving the Hosokawa Clan which in turn served as advisors to the Bakufu, and people only get accepted to serve if a recommendation letter can be produced by another notable samurai of a high rank - and these recommendations are not given lightly because if the subject of the recommendation failed, or lied, or disgraced himself, he'd be awarded a ritual suicide, and the recommending party probably had to die too. In a Warrior class ruling society, martial exploits are not mere tall tales or something people brag about for laughs - Firstly, it's the basis of social advancement in their civil service so it comes under scrutiny. Secondly it's not like a record of who beat up who - it's actually a record of who KILLED who, and in Japan in the 16th Century there were detailed records of birth and deaths of the nobility (ie, samurai), and if Musashi killed another samurai, it was recorded. He killed the heirs of the Yoshiaka clan who were instructors to the Shogun....there were records of these, but I guess it's a forlorn hope that you could read the language? Finally, a swordsmanship school in Japan, cannot be established without their credentials being vetted by the shogunate - it's not like mcdojos nowadays - Lineages and historical records have to be provided, licenses will be issued etc, because a swordsmanship school was their equivalent of Westpoint. But I guess you know all about Medieval Japan huh?

As far as I remember in the book he also sneaks to the child commander from behind who was only guarded by only a few men. Only then took on the others. Musashi's reasoning was that as long as only one student was alive while he had to flee the battle he was lost and that was unacceptable. However if he killed the commander he won the battle - no matter what.

btw this is were musashi(westworld) inspired of but the difference is the real miyamoto musashi isn't thug just a stray ronin who wants to duel with every single samurai in early edo period as you can see in the last duel of musashi in westworld he used the niten ichi ryu against tanaka (the signature style of miyamoto musashi)
