  • HF APRS & HF Winlink comes to Android devices with a new Robust Packet TNC called the Teensy RBR TNC.
    The Teensy is Robust Packet TNC, enabling HF APRS and HF Winlink on Android (and soon iOS) devices. If you were a fan of the Mobilinkd KISS TNC running on aprsdroid, the Teensy should be very interesting for you.
    This first video is basically just an announcement about the Teensy RBR TNC. Once the kit is released and I have the final version in my hands, we'll follow-up with a second video, showing the Teensy capabilities at home, and in the field.
    For more context or instructions on getting your own Teensy RPR TNC, please read the episode notes at: oh8stn.org/blog/2023/09/28/hf...

    It opens up a number of previously limited communication options for the operator. It also has the ability to improve the reliability of EMCOMM under challenging conditions--a very important advantage!

    I had just installed the WOAD app on my smartphone a couple of days ago when I realized that, in my eagerness to streamline sending/receiving Winlink email using my Android phone, I had completely overlooked the fact that there is no convenient way to interface it with a radio. The ham radio gods must have sensed my frustration because this video is very timely! Thanks for bringing the Teensy TNC to our attention Julian!

    This is interesting and I need to investigate a software modem that is the rewritten UZ7HO Soundmodem for Linux in C. I am not sure yet what robust packet but I will see if this soft modem will work for HF. The problem with HF is the very low packet speed that needs addressed. VARA HF does run faster so maybe a gateway to get to APRS with a better modulation. I plan to stay with Raspberry Pi’s for now. I do like the packaging and I hope it as a battery but time will tell.

    Julian, curious if the Teansy works in KISS mode? I build the Mobilinkd DYI kit for the TNC3 when the Bluetooth version was unobtainable. I have been experiment with WOAD but only utilizing Telnet capabilities. Thanks for motivating me to get back into its utilization. I now have the TNC4 and have a craiger KM6LYW digipi setup. I'm curious how this device compares to them all. I like the internal GPS device. Not sure why it can only be used in tracker mode though. Looking forward for future content. Semper Fi

    Awesome. I've experimented with Robust Packet on 30m in the field and got packets gated through a i-gate digipeater in the Seattle region from a mountaintop in Utah. So I know this stuff works. I'm concerned about whether there are enough Robust Packet i-gates in the US. It might improve the usefulness of the device if it would support other packet protocols like AX.25 for legacy network compatibility. It seems like Vara is becoming the gold standard, so I wonder where Robust Packet sits. Both are proprietary.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks David.
      Valid points. With no plans for Linux, iOS or android, Vara will always require a windows machine. It's ok for a windows laptop or a tablet, but not a great option for mobile devices.
      The lack of i-gates is a problem, as is the lack of RPR Winlink gateways. This is easily remedied by the software version (Winrpr) of RPR which runs on desktop. I have to make a series of videos to get people interested in setting up gateways and i-gates. It's definitely a process.
      As for the propitory software, I completely agree with you. If nothing else, this will become a proof of concept for something open-source later down-the-line.

    • @dangermandave67
      @dangermandave67 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@OH8STN Yes, I suppose that, rather than griping about the lack of RPR Winlink gateways and APRS RPR i-gates, I could just set one up at home and use it when I'm in the field doing my SOTA activations in the mountains of Utah and neighboring states. Shouldn't need much of a station for that. Probably would be best with a NVIS antenna.

    Ahhh! No more hardware! Please!
    Better software is what we need. A VaraHF app perhaps? A CAT control feature through BT or WiFi into an IC-705 using an Android device?
    Imagining a 705, antenna, and my phone. That's what I want. Everything else is just more stuff to fiddle with and maintain, not to mention points of failure.
    I love the channel though, keep it up!

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  9 месяцев назад

      I completely agree with you but developers aren't listening. The Vara developer absolutely refuses to support Linux, Android or anything else but windows. It is expected that we setup windows mini computers to run vara remotely. This slso adds hardware, without adding Android or iOS support.
      This is what I meant by the chicken and the egg problem.

    • @JamesKC3OXN
      @JamesKC3OXN 9 месяцев назад +1

      @OH8STN I know what you mean. I'm currently running a Vara HF P2P station and just had a tablet failure. I've been on the hunt for a miniPC that won't break the bank and hold up to 24/7/365 use. It's too bad they still don't make the Windows Phone.
