  • APRS packet radio with some real distance!
Interestingly enough, my email message to myself did go through while I made this video, it just didn't show up on aprs.fi. Their distributed database might not be coherent or timely. Send a message to SMSGTE, or EMAIL-2 to see if you can get through to friends phones and email boxes :)

About 2009 I was HF APRS. I also used Robust Packet as well

Thanks for this. I played around with 30m APRS today using a NVIS dipole antenna set up in my yard in Utah (strung along the side fence of our property). Didn't get any of my beacons gated. Only decoded one beacon. It was from that station in Arkansas that you showed in your video. This was a little disappointing. Previously I've set up a QRP station in the field and got my packets gated through stations in Washington and Wisconsin. Today, nothing. That's HF, I suppose. But my main purpose in having a node at the house is so that it can receive packets I send from the field and gate them to APRS-IS. I'm going to try leaving it running and take my portable rig over to Heber City on the other side of the Wasatch Range and see if the home station can receive a packet I send from the field.

NVIS is inherently "local". shoots straight up, bounces straight down. with a traditional dipole, i get the station in Washington state regularly. 30 watts.

Time clock tones should be at 2.5/5/10/15/20 maybe even 25mhz AM and is a nice way to show propagation coming out of Colorado as well.

What good timing on this video after we talked about it yesterday haha. Ordered a FT1DR this morning and found my pi zero w. I wonder about making a hf -> vhf aprs bridge. Could be set up in zero noise land with solar and since it's just a bridge it wouldn't need internet access itself.

yah, thanks for helping with the SOTA run yesterday! and yes, our conversation was the inspiration for this video. direwolf has the notion of "channels" and can certainly bridge between an HF radio and VHF. Though, you might find that this already happens behind the scenes. Send a message packet over HF to a radio that's on VHF. the APRSIS backend will relay the message to the area of the vhf operator on 144.390. That's kind of why I put "GATE,WIDE2-1" in the digipath, to help with the VHF portion of the packet's voyage.

I’ve got APRSIS32 and a 991A. Can’t get it to transmit over the radio. Created a port but 1200 is the slowest I can go. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

You need to modify the XML file used for 991A
