Do it over RF!
NA7Q's APRS Droid with new features!
NA7Q's APRSDroid OSM is a fork/extension of the APRSDroid client originally developed by D01GL. I'ts the same great APRSDroid app and also adds Digipeater, IGate, BluetoothLE, compressed MicE/Position packets and Offline Open Street Maps.
Of course it works with your Digipi.org TNC, along with any wifi/bluetooth KISS TNC.
APRSDroid allows you do do APRS packet radio operations with any radio, including messaging, using nothing more than your Android phone, a KISS TNC and an amateur radio. Want to do APRS text/SMS messaging? APRSDroid makes it easier than ever, no more trying to type out messages using your radio's nine-key interface.

Awesome video I ordered the parts🎉
Can you power on/off the radio from the mic? or do I have to get out of my car, open the trunk and power it on/off or have to pull my cellphone out of my pocket for that?
the HT app and the little yellow walkie talkie can turn off your radio. it also has auto-power-off timeout. Otherwise, walk to the trunk :)
0:26 came for the radio content, stayed for the sick riffs 🤘
DUDE! I literally ordered a tablet yesterday, playing with it today. with the intent of using it offline with my FTM-400. Been crawling thru 5 year old videos last few days, and HERE YOU ARE!! Dropping fresh knowledge bombs on us plebs. thanks bro, 73 KJ7QEB
did you just have that michael bit ready? whats the story on that
I have poor impulse control. see the movie "Office Space" - great stuff
You may be repeating bumper music - but that’s what we love about classic rock - you can listen to the same thing over and over again and it’s still great! Nice work! BTW - is that an Android dev emulator you’re running or are you taking remote control of one of your Android devices?
I'm using scrcpy on Linux which allows me to see/use my android tablet connected with usb-debugging enabled. kinda cool
I'm struggling with the offline maps
Send me an email, found on QRZ, NA7Q. Happy to help out with that issue.
@@mikeph4 Can you share it here Mike? Your instructions tell us to click on "grant file permissions" but that isn't seen on the client, and aprsdroidOSM can't access the files?
@@KM6LYW Since your video I made an update that made it easier and more standardized to grant permissions. The permissions previously were done when going to the system settings and searching for hidden permissions menus within Android. With the new update you don't need to do that (hopefully). I tested it on 3 devices with old and newer Android and it worked great. I also added a file picker for selecting the maps. So the whole process is greatly simplified. Let me know if this works or doesn't.
@@mikeph4 yes thank you. It works perfectly now. offline maps! I used the file picker, just selected the maps file from aprsdroid, then I pressed 'grant permissions' from within aprsdroid.
Needs more cowbell!
still need an easy way to auto update the sd card img so it doesn't have to be accessed directly
I have been waiting for years for this on APRS Droid. Hurray!!!
What else would you like to see?
@mikeph4 It will be great once the Bluetooth LE option is fully developed. Some sort of built-in map would be nice. When I open the app it won't pull any maps from the Internet. I understand maps can be downloaded though. In general APRSDroid's interface is a bit cumbersome. But I'm sure changing that would take a ton of work. I'm just happy someone is finally continuing development of the app.
@@JimBrock-y1jthere is a built in map. If it doesn't work it's because you tried to use Google maps, which I can't provide publicly due to cost. But OSM is free. You can use the online version. Or ANY map type for offline. I will be adding more online mapping down the road. As well as making it easier to pick and choose your offline maps. The layout I would say is feature filled, but not at all cumbersome. Send me an email, NA7Q
@@JimBrock-y1j Apparently my previous comment got deleted. You can use online OSM maps by literally just switching the map viewer to OSM maps from the eye icon at the top. And making sure offline mode isn't toggled in the app preferences. what about the interface is "cumbersome"? It's a feature filled app for APRS to say the least. It's not cumbersome or overly complex like APRSIS32 on windows.
I'm old, but I don't fear the reaper.
Nice video. It was nice messaging you through aprs today and seeing my digipeater at 1:30
🍿 ready!
Fab! Now I’m keen to get setup on my raspberry pi. Thanks.
Does this also work with the Digirig lite? Thanks! 73!
Not out-of-the-box. It requires a special PTT line at the end of each direwolf .conf file for the CM108 chip in DigiRig Lite. (DigiRig Mobile is fully supported).
@@KM6LYW Thank you!

I recently got my Fathers old 1986 Macintosh Plus up and running old-school packet radio. I got a BlueSCSI drive for it so no more loading 800K floppy disks. I have it running an old AEA PK-232MBX that I had sitting around. Pretty cool setup and been a lot of fun, just waiting to get my antenna put up if the weather will ever cooperate...
Is there a log file that is stored on the Pi so I can take a historic look at the activity that has been processed via my iGate? if so, how do I look at it?
"direwolf.log" lists all the activity, however, it resets each time you run direwolf. if you use ">>" instead of ">", it will append to the log, instead of overwrite.
any idea why my amp will not key when the 7300 is in usb-d mode?
Hi, this is very interesting information. I am a ham operator from Bulgaria. I have enjoyed radio and networking from a very young age, and I am curious about what would happen if you tried to play a video, a song, or even connect to a non-encrypted Minecraft server. 😂 Would it get overloaded? Also does digipi software include built in wifi hotspot?
No, I wouldn't even try on VHF (144Mhz) which is supporting 1200baud. Maybe at 9600baud, which is the logical limit. it might take hours to transfer a song.
Interesting so it’s quite slow technology is there a way to speed it up to get let’s say 1 megabit per second otherwise this could be practical for off the grid networking for basic information
@@alekzandermaniku4630 No, it's a function of the frequency. Lower frequencies go 100 miles, but the bandwidth is 1200baud. High frequences go across a house, and the bandwidth is 1 billion baud.
@@craig9309 how high frequencies give more speed and is there a balance between distance and speed?
Nice video. Thanks for putting this together. I'll be putting it to use.
I know this is a technical hobby...BUT...this is a bit nerdy and quickly kills any interest in this mode...IMHO.
Curious, and have been trying to figure it out for a few days now with no luck so hopefully there is an easier answer if I ask. To start LOVE this and appreciate all the work you all have done and makes life nice that I can run WSJT-x from my couch upstairs while spending time with my wife rather than in front of my rig. But the question, is it possible to connect to FLRig over a local network and not just on local host (127.0.0.1:12345)? Would love to point a wsjt-x on my Mac to the digirig running FLRig on a port, but am so far failing. Thanks to anyone who may have info and not be as new to this as I am...
Possibly? or via rigctld, both are network-controlled. the question is how you'd get audio?
The Pi loses network/WiFi connectivity whenever I plug in the small screen, any ideas on why this may be happening? WiFi works perfectly without the screen plugged in.
That's a new one to me. Is the pi sitting on a static bag or conductive surface?
@@KM6LYW It's on my workbench where I do all my radio stuff. I might send the screen back and get a replacement, maybe it's an issue of bad hardware. Frustrating for sure...
@@Dennis-tf2cs Yah, sounds lame. you can always hardware with ethernet too. they make little ethernet dongles, etc
No jokes, no swearing, no bare feet, no fun on ham radio
lol - it kind of depends on the time of day and the repeater :). We don't take ourselves that seriously. At least we try.
Is there any known issues like this on the ft710 ?
Nice one.
Awesome videos! Your guitar bumpers are inspirational! Your attitude and eloquence makes me want to move back to California! Should I assume that the Yaesu FT-891 is a "Type B" even though it has a USB port? Though, I'll confess, I didn't see two different options on the 1.9.2 page...
Yah, typeB, it's a strange animal with multiple ports. Get a Digirig891 -- made just for that radio.
@@craig9309 yeah, I have the DR891 for that rig, and a couple DR Mobiles for my 857 and HTs, and a DR Mini which I'm having a devil of a time to get to cooperate with the PI. Oh! BTW, Some of my dearest friends are from Georgetown, and not the university :) I lived right off 49, within spitting distance from the American. Thanks again for this plethora of knowledge!
All of the 991 and 991a's have this problem. I redid mine the day I got it new a few years ago.
You mentioned the Yaesu FTDX10. Is this a problem with that radio too?
unknown, i read, second hand, that the pcb masking varnish was present on the dx10 too.
Also known as 'wave washers'.
Thanks for the info if I run into this with mine now I know.
I let the magic spoke out of my FT-991. I need to get it fixed eventually.
Heck yeah! Love that bumper music information this video!
Yaesu - THE RADIO
Well... Maybe 10 min for you but I've spent a lot of time just getting the PI where I have an OS on it and I'm able to Putty into it. Still working on the rest, hopefully it goes faster. I'm not a "Pi" guy, very new to all of this. Thanks!
The raspberry pi version on GITHUB is for 32 bit OS and does not work on the 64 bit
QRM😂
I use 213 in my mobile and 400 for home UHF VHF
".. But hey we all got noise problems, right?" ... no sir. One thing apartment living did for me is force me outside doing POTA. Rarely hear *any* noise in the forests and mountain tops.
Would be nice for someone with a 3D printer to make a little container for the pi and the screen.
What would be a good one for powering a cobra mini 19 CB radio? And safely?
Cool. I've been meaning to get the data cable for my FTM-500DR. The out of the box APRS capabilities are fairly limited, in that it is apparently impossible to construct a message other than a basic Mic-E encoded one - if someone has figured this out let me know. I've tried for example to get PHG (power, height, gain) into my status but it flat out doesn't work. So I figure I'll use my Mac and Processing to make a serial connection to the radio and see what I can push down the wire.
I was initially enthusiastic about this project. The DigiPi software works flawlessly. No complaints there. But on the couple of occasions where I tried using a Pi with an Android tablet in the field, the connection between the two devices proved to be rather janky. I gave up. The last thing I need when I'm on a SOTA summit is for stuff to quit working. I might give this another try if I can build a lightweight cyberdeck incorporating a Pi, battery, small screen and Bluetooth keyboard. Alternatively, I'm wondering if the DigiPi system will run on one of the Clockwork devices like the uConsole. I think this project is great for use in the shack. I just have a problem with finding a suitable IO device to use with it in the field.
Do you think it was a peer-wifi failure? android can lose it's mind when it doesn't see internet behind a hotspot, trying to convince you to use a different spot. If it's a UI thing, I highly recommend using RealVNC for android (port 5901, pass "test11"). It's much more ergonomic than the web browser.
@@KM6LYW It was complaining about lack of internet connection, as if I cared about that when I was sitting on top of a bloody mountain! There was no way I could convince it to connect. I did try RealVNC at one point. I can't remember now, but I think I had problems figuring out how to bring up the on-screen keyboard when I needed it.
@@KM6LYW Not seeing the reply I tried to post yesterday. I think it was a peer-wifi failure, since I recall some griping about lack of internet. This is really dumb. Any ideas on how to overcome? Also, do you think I could run DigiPi on a Raspberry Pad 5 from Big Tree Tech, using a Raspberry Pi CM4? This setup might obviate the need for a tablet as I/O device.
@@dangermandave67 Android/IOS can't imagine using wifi without internet, instagram, snapface, bookchat, etc. Android thinks you're insane for trying to use peer wifi, but my devices all begrudgingly provided a button that allowed me to "stay connected" despite all this.
What size SD card is recommended fie this project? I have ordered allthe other stuff.
DigiPi is about 6gigs. (smallest SD card you can buy is about 16G?)
