  • UCD Earth Institute coffee morning research talk by Payam Sajadi (UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy) on RESTORATION: A multidisciplinary human-centric approach for flood risk mitigation in Dublin, 16 May 2024.
Abstract: Dublin's rapid urban development is causing a concerning loss of green spaces (within just two years, approximately 4.07% of Dublin's green spaces have been transformed into paved, constructed areas), leading to increased flood risks amid changing climate and rainfall patterns. Despite millions spent on conventional flood defenses, critical solutions may be overlooked. RESTORATION is a cutting-edge initiative funded by Science Foundation Ireland that leverages advanced remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and robust community engagement. This multi-disciplinary project looks to transform Dublin’s urban fabric by enhancing water absorption and retention through innovative, nature-based solutions. Focused on converting domestic gardens from paved surfaces to green, permeable natural flood barriers, RESTORATION offers a pioneering approach to urban resilience, aiming to reinvent how cities adapt to environmental challenges.
