P.S I think you were close to figuring out the reason for the artstyle change. The three (?) characters all share the common trait of being in d^^^^^^e!

If this game was made in Ren'py the voice settings could be a result of the developers not changing the options menu from the default and only making changes to the interface's design
Definitely plausible. Weird choice to modify all the UI, but leave in a defunct setting though
I thought it was Ren'py as well... And image scaling is automatic which is why there weren't any options for that.

As someone that's really into visual novels right now the writing in this game hurts me on a fundamental level oh my god. Thank you for your sacrifice Graeldon 🙏

As someone who loves visual novels i feel so bad for you having those crapfests be your first experience with the medium ;-;
unfortunetly it will take a while until you get to any proper good japanese VNs, the closest one is 428: Shibuya Scramble, but even that will take a long ass time to get to.
Sounds like there are far more rubbish VN's than good ones. Same as for RPGMaker games. I guess there are a lot of free assets out there and the engine is pretty easy to use in both cases.

I will also say that it IS ok to use words which players may not understand. Steins;Gate does this all the time. However, Steins;Gate also has an in game glossary to define all of those terms and explain any references. This game actually seems to draw on the stylings of Steins;Gate quite a bit, but without the fantastic writing, story, and characters of that VN.
I agree! Unfamiliar or lore-relevant words are fine, when handled correctly. Sometimes you can infer their meaning from context, sometimes the characters will explain it, or sometimes there is a glossary. Or in this case, none of the above.
@@Graeldon I'd like to add that occasionally, confusion and befuddlement might be what the writing aims to create, but then they should become understandable over time. I didn't "get" what Dune was about until I was near the end of the book, and as an ESL, reading Trainspotting was really hard because it is written in Scottish vernacular. But both of these novels are really good at adding information over time: Dune by show not tell, and Trainspotting by using standard english whenever the narrator stops being first person.

With the mention of S;G, i would like to recommend VNs for those who _actually_ wants to see terminally-online people solve a conspiracy and stick it to The Organization.
That's right, it's Chaos;Head NoAH, and Chaos;Child.
The reason the game has Voice options despite not having them is bc its a default of the renpy options menu. As someone who's tinkered in the engine a lot and played a fair hand of games made with it, you kinda pick up on the base stuff. Not that it's wrong or bad, just noticable.

i don't think it's ren'py, but it's def a default engine options menu. I've seen it around but idk what it is exactly. the demo? predecessor? idk, that's free on itch doesn't have a ren'py file structure, and i've never seen the exact menu style it has in a ren'py game before.

It'll probably take at least a year to work through the 1's, but it means it's not that far off in the grand scheme of things
What's kind of disappointing about this is 4 Chan had actually produced an amazing visual novel before, back in 2012. It was called Katawa Shoujo, and despite being handled by 4 Chan, there's only one potato-brained, conspiracy spewing character, and he's supposed to be the comic relief. Much better to play that game than this pile of edge-lord junk.
So good things can come from 4-Chan!

@@Graeldon I mean, the constant homophobic slurs is actually a thing that 4Chan does. To the point where it's not even used as a slur, it became a suffix to denote being part of a group or something. Odd usage, but I can sadly confirm that it is authentic 4Chan bullshit.
Also editing to say that Katawa Shojo is actually a good game and worth playing. It came from a different time, where it was still awful, but not as deeply ingrained as was when I left.
Yeah 4chan managed a few gems in a pile of absolutely garbage for sure. I'm glad someone mentioned this because I was shocked when it actually existed. I was never going to believe 😂

I was thinking that this just felt like Katawa Shoujo filtered through the lens of an obnoxious nu-4channer who discovered the site in 2016 through shitty youtube readings of greentexts
so, we had a good visual novel followed by a really bad one in this series

God. This game looks like someone read or watched Welcome to the NHK and decided to make an underbaked fangame for it
The only thing that surprised me about this game was the price... and I think the different art styles is because they probably bought some pre-made assets which is normal and they showed why is good to use assets that mix well together, the eagle dude I can be wrong but I bet was the only one I thing that was made for this game
I think I saw the dev say somewhere that all of the character designs are original assets. So maybe they had different artists at some point and got stuck with models they had paid for and needed to use?
@@Graeldon Has a chance but I quite doubt it many of the characters look like ones you can make in these doll dress up games to a point some even have the same face... but then again in their site they are quite open on using AI, so maybe it's AI assets?
And find quite weird that in their blog couldn't find one artist name too because like normally indie projects tend to put the names of the artists quite easy to find, but also can be the person that made the assets don't want to be associated seeing how the project "plays" a lot with dog whistles

Sadly, it doesn't go uphill from here.
So it's basically a less competent AI: The Somnium Files, with weird racist undertones (regardless of how much they say it's not intended) and inconsistent art design and plot.
Also, this me saying that you'll probably enjoy the Somnium Files because it's more competent, funny, and actually interactive. (And it comes with Voice Acting!)
I'm looking forward to this one, and it should only be around 15 years away!
@@Graeldon the good part is that youll get to play the sequel immediately after! Also i just realized that since on steam its available only with the sequel and the bundle is called "the nonary games", youll probably not get to play 999 (by the dame author)

Which I was around for, forgot about, and actually cringed in real life reading.
I was about to comment that the goats remind me of a specific section in umineko (all I will say) but now that I think about it this whole thing reminds me of umineko except with none of what makes umineko enjoyable and all of its flaws (though I can't say much I've only finished chapter 2 of umineko). It's got the same format of essentially being a book using aspects of a video game to enhance it yet the story and visuals don't stack up nearly as well.
Also just as a note: The screenshot you put up while mentioning how the game is a shitpost is actually a pretty common disclaimer in Japanese games (though it's usually presented in a bit more formal of a manner and shown in game). It's there in time crisis, the zero escape series, umineko, and the AI series I think. I don't know why it's common but I assume it has to do with some law.
It made me think of it at first too, but I don't think it's actually that similar upon further inspection tbh.
When you (eventually) get to the "N" section, there's an RPGmaker game that i think you'd really enjoy. I know i did.

also uuuuuhhhhhh 20 doubloons for a subpar visual novel????? the best visual novel I've ever played, The House In Fata Morgana, is 25 bucks. and it takes around 30 hours to complete, original soundtrack, gorgeous visuals, amazing story blah blah blah

Oh my god do yourself a favor and play some good visual novels!! I recommend Ace Attorney Trilogy (the first three games) and anything by Kotaro Uchikoshi. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is not considered by many to be one, but I'll still recommend it, and it's short!
You should do a monthly "palate cleanser" and review a good game on purpose, not only ones found by accident lol I don't want you to hate your job
I've played through the original Ace Attorney game and absolutely loved it! I personally don't consider it as a Visual Novel, but I guess it kind of is

The final punctuation game! This series has come a long way from the humble beginnings of TBITTSOG. I can’t wait to see what games are covered in the numbers category.
Slightly related, due to your reviews of the .hack package it reminded me that I’ve been curious about the game since other creators have talked about it. Due to the Steam Winter Sale, I paid maybe $5 or a little more for the collection! Unfortunately I won’t be able to think about playing it until I get my online 3DS and WiiU stuff are done.
$5 is a bargain for the .Hack Quadrilogy!
Crud, I checked my youtube notifications right before you uploaded, so I didn't see that you uploaded until about half an hour ago, silly me. Great video as always though, even with the delay.
Sorry to go on spreadsheet patrol again, but it looks like some of the columns got squished, or something. Not sure what happened since it was fine the last time I checked, but either way, should be an easy fix, just double click the borders of each column to auto fit it so all the text fits in.
Anyways, as for this game, it furthers my stereotype of games that prominently feature anime girls as being one of it's main draws being not very good to say the least. Every game that I have seen that has done so hasn't been very good. We can definitely see this in the games we've played so far as well, that being !Anyway!, - Doki Doki Family -, and of course -A-. .hack doesn't really count in my opinion since it's more stylized to be like an mmo, rather than just anime. The only game that I am aware of that is an exception is Doki Doki Lit Club, however that is based purely on what I've heard, as I've never played it, and I don't really have any interest in doing so. Maybe in 50 years when you get to D games, we'll see if that is truly the case.

I'm sure there will be exceptions to the rule! Or, I hope so anyway.
