In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to the Brazilian band Angra for the very first time. The song is Holy Land from their 1996 album of the same name. This is a lovely and nuanced track that I enjoyed playing along with as I listened. Enjoy!

This syncopated pattern (Bb to C) is a reference to the sound of "berimbau", a instrument used by ancient slaves to dance to the "capoeira", a unique dance / fighting style that was forbidden by the portuguese. This instrument is still used in the "rodas de capoeira" or capoeira dancing gatherings - wich was a outsider dance / fighting style until de 1900's. So I never had people to go to shows with, and I was never the type of person to go to a show alone. It's one of my regrets that I never got to see some of these bands in their prime when they were touring (though fortunately I've been able to see Dream Theater several times now).
And yeah, that late 90s Shadow Gallery really was a talented group. It's a shame that they never got label support to tour, as they probably could have built a nice following. But then with Mike dying, it just was never meant to be.
And I'm super jealous that you got to see Andre, though the circumstances are too bad.

It's AMAZING how Angra mixes classical and Brazilian music into metal, specially in this album. Maybe it's hard for non-Brazilians to identify how filled with our country's traditional rythyms and melodies this song is. In this song, metal is just an additional flavour, being at it's core, brazilian style(s) music.

Hey Doug, thanks for mentioning me!
Just curiosity, this music was composed basically by singer Andre Matos alone, who was an actual maestro. Unfortunately he passed away really young (47 yo) in 2019, and his death day (June 8) was officially considered the Heavy Metal day in São Paulo. It may even become National Heavy Metal Day...
I don't think Doug will like most of his music, because... double bass 😂
    But I can still recommend:
    Silence and Distance - Angra
    Fairy Tale - Shaman
    For Tomorrow - Shaman
Endeavour - Andre Matos (solo band)

Prog metal friends, this album brings so many memories and made me think about another album that I used to listen to when I listened to Angra. Probably none knows it, it is from an Italian band called Time Machine and the album is Act 2 Galileo. It’s a concept album on the story of Galileo and how the church mistreated him and his ideas and imprisoned him. Recommended.

Well at first I thought this wasn't a good choice for a first Angra song but after seeing the video now I think it was. Their more traditional prog/power songs might've been more generic to his ears but this piece showcase their compositional skills and the great way they use folky Brazilian elements.

The Holy Land album is their best mix of Brazilian influences (both melodically and rhythmically speaking) with heavy/melodic metal. Would suggest other tunes like Nothing to Say and Silence & Distance and going into heavier stuff like the Temple of Shadows concept album.

It was such a pleasant and exciting surprise to find your reaction to two Angra songs, found on Holy Land album. It means a lot to us Brazilians, especially those who lived at that time, who got excited about those young guys simply using their talent and culture to make music different from the standards. Sadly, but somewhat comforting, there has been a late recognition and dissemination of these works, triggered by the early death of vocalist Andre Matos in 2019. Owner of immense musical knowledge, classical formation, differentiated and unique voice, stage performing compared to the best front leaders, Matos was and will always be very important for Brazilian Heavy Metal. The track Nothing to Say (also on Holy Land) is something that might interest you, as are other compositions and performances found on Shaman's albums (Ritual, Reason) and Andre's solo career (Virgo, Time to Be Free , Mentalize, The Turn of the Lights). We feel very proud and miss him, for his dedication, talent, humility and, of course, amazing songs. Matos would be completing 50 years of life on 09/14/21 when the documentary "Andre Matos o Maestro do Rock" will be released, telling and eternalizing his entire trajectory.

Angra have always been a bit of a blind spot for me. I remember my guitar teacher in high school showing me a Kiko Loureiro instructional video, and me being really impressed and going downloading a load of their albums. I think the problem was it really wasn't what I was expecting it to be, like much less shreddy. When I later got into power metal they were a name that cropped up a lot so I tried again, but again because they aren't typical of that style it just wasn't what I was looking for.
Listening again now for what is probably the be first time in 15 years I can definitely appreciate it more than I did (or at least this song), but I'm still not entirely sure they're a band I'll go out of my way to listen to on the regular.

Also, I'd say Temple of Shadows by them is probably one of the best concept albums I have ever heard, beaten maybe only by Metropolis pt2. If you decide to do another long listening session, this should absolutely be at the top of your list (although you may have to ready your ear for some double bass drumming).

So happy you decided to check out Angra! Glad you enjoyed it!
I really would suggest checking out their album Temple of Shadows, it's one of my favourite albums of all time. Yes, there is some double bass, but the virtuosity of the musicians is incredible and something that wasn't really touched upon in this song. Every member of the band playing on Temple of Shadows is an absolute virtuoso and it remains a joy to listen to even 17 years after it was released.
I think it'd make for a good long play review, there's a lot of variety through the album and a good mix of pace. The Brazilian influences are all there and some fun guest musicians which add a nice touch. As a prog album the overarching story is also very cool :)
Looking forward to you hearing more from this band!

the whole album holy land is an incredible fusion of symphonic elements, brazilian indigenous music and classic power metal. Its a concept album about the discovery and colonization of brazil, and south america in general. i suggest you check out Carolina IV from this album. it leans a bit more into the power metal, but is still very unique and a lot of fun. for some impressive vocals and beatiful organ i also suggest checking out deep blue. and this is without even mentioning their other albums. Angels cry is a classic 90's power metal album with progressive elements. Temple of shadows is a progressive power metal masterpiece telling the story of a crusader, the shadowhunter, becoming disillusioned to the christian faith after witnessing the horrors of the crusades. their other albums are great too, but these three are imo the most impressive and creative.

Carolina IV! Is just how you like: long and beautiful.
For a quite long time Angra was my favorite band. Their earlier stuff is just magical; all the members were excepcional. Nowadays only one of the founders still in the band: Andre Matos left in 1999, 2000, made a bunch of awesome stuff (he's a freaking legend), and sadly died in june of 2019; Kiko Loureiro is on Megadeth since 2015; Luis Mariutti is on Shaman, the third band that Andre Matos formed (1st was Viper in the 80's, 2nd Angra) with Ricard Confessori, if my memory isn't fooling me.
Angra had 3 different vocalists: Andre, Edu Falaschi and Fabio Lione (nowadays). Btw, you should check Rhapsody of Fire, too; symphonic metal, italian, amazing guitarist, everything is incredible. Maybe Symphony of Enchanted Lands (the song), of The Mighty Ride of Firelord, or even The Last Winged Unicorn?
    Cheers!
