From Shaman you should definately check the song "Fairy Tale" (do the LIVE version, it's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen) and from Angra you should check the song "Carolina IV" or any other from the Holy Land album which is heavily inspired by brazillian music. @@Hypetreme Or comparison of both "Accolades" I & II, to see how they relate lyrically AND musically, with the variation on primary motive. That would make perfect sense on a channel like this, run by composer.
Thanks again Doug for the great reaction and analysis. Avantasia is a great project, I especially love the first two Metal Opera albums, which I literally grew up with. The ample use of organs and choir singing, giving a bit of a ”church music” sound, really suits the story. Funnily enough, we witnessed even some head-nodding action from Doug while the double-kick drums were going on, you’re turning into a metalhead slowly but surely. I did always understand your comments on the double kick drums, it can be a bit much especially if the mix is too heavy on the drums. But it serves it’s purpose as a forward driving force, giving often a sense of speed or urgency to the music. But it works best when it’s not the whole song. Like in this piece, the use of double kick drums is quite tasty.
I went to their concert pretty much blindfolded when they came to Argentina at Obras closed stadium with Amanda, Andre and everyone else. I used to buy tickets to random international metal artists, some I knew quite well (Epica, Nightwish, Dream Theater, etc) and others I knew little or nothing (Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, Sonata Arctica, and Avantasia). I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by the repertoire. I believe (memory fails after 15 years or more) this was the last song they played and boy, between the marijuana smoke around me, the three hours of concerts, the lack of air and the melody it was a celestial experience. You went from mosh pits to waving your arms in slow motion all in the same song. Not sure if I was tearing by the time it ended but I wouldn't be surprised if I did.
Btw. I saw them live on Masters of Rock in Vizovice (don't ask me the year, it's long time and lots of beers ago ;) ). They played as the last band, 3 hours show, only Metal Opera I & II. F***ing AMAZING!!!
Some of those progressions made me think of Jim Steinman ... I was poised for the all the backing vocals to appear in a Todd Rundgren style arrangement. Interesting music to start the week - thanks
Listen to Mystery Of The Blood Red Rose. With this Song Avantasia would be played at the Eurovision Song Contest. Pure Jim Steinmann and Meat Loaf Stuff.
Impressive song, when I first heard it four years and a half ago and so did I with The Metal Operas Pt.1 and Pt.2, I was blown away. Thanks RUclips for making me discovery that amazing musicianship!! And nice reaction as well Doug ^.^
One of my favourite songs of theirs and legitimately never noticed Pachelbel at the end until you drew my attention to it. 'Ghost in the Moon' is a more recent track of theirs that deserves attention.
Would absolutely adore to hear your thoughts on more recent stuff from Avantasia, such as The Raven Child, for example. I mean, I'd be happy to see anything on any of the big songs, from The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony, The Great Mystery, Let The Storm Descend Upon You or Ghost in the Moon. All some of my favourite songs ever.
Finally a music commentator with perfect pitch. Too many "experts" can't tell what they're listening to without a keyboard and chord book to rebuild each part, which aggressively murders the flow. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it if you do more Avantasia suggest The Scarecrow there is a great live version…. Top wish for metal Monday though is Rhapsody with Gargoyles Angels of Darkness!
@@kashaph yeah, but as a musician myself I can tell any song from Rhapsody/R. Of fire, are a test musically and virtually. A whole new level "gargoyles" excellent keep on digging and ypu will find "gargoyles" its just the tip of the iceberg musically speaking. Not sure if Dough can handle it!

A claisscal composer goin through so many different styles (and particularly metal, that i love), you're a real music lover and you share and transmit this. Thank a lot, greetings from France Sir ;)
Finally AVANTASIA, gave us more avantasia please!! "The mystery of time" is one of the others storytelling albums and higly recomend "Savior in the Clockwork"
Avantasia's The Metal Opera Parts 1 and 2 are my favorites of their entire catalog. They bring me great joy in listening. I still play both albums several times each year. They flow very nicely, every track is great, and they put me in a good place emotionally. They are among my all-time favorite albums.
Doug just found your channel through this video. If this is really you listening to that song for the first time your hearing capability is amazing, and I don't mean just telling the keys and chords. Am a big avantasia fan myself, listened to this song hundreds of times and always thought around 15:00 in your video sounds "familiar". Palchebel never came to my mind there even though I if course know canon in D🤦🏻♂️
I knew that this day would come, and this was the logic song to start with Avantasia. Now you can continue with Sign of the cross, The Great Mystery, The Scarecrow or Let the Storm Descent Upon You. They are all long songs with lots of sections. A little less "opera" I think, but still great songs.
I would love to see a reaction to Galneryus's Angel of Salvation. It's based on a classic concerto (i won't spoiler which to see if you figure it out by yourself otherwise look it up after the reaction). I would suggest the live version on youtube since the video version is shortened and the live version is very well mixed and performed with (at least part of) an actual orchestra.
Yours and another comment made me check Angel of Salvation and my mind was blown. Immediately followed them Galneryus on Spotify. Thank you for the recommendation.
Hey Doug? Is there any Rhapsody or Savatage in your list? I think you'll like them, I suggest the songs Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness (Rhapsody) and Chance (Savatage)
Another reccomendation of an amazing symphonic metal band with incredible opera singers: Therion. My current favourite song is "Sitra Ahra". Also, "The rise of Sodom and Gomorrah", "The Invincible" and "Hellequin" are just... wow! Letting others tell other good songs. It's so hard to pick one! Oh and don't forget about Epica! You got some amazing suggestions in the "Sancta Terra" clip. I can't wait for reactions on that band, as well!
The Raven Child - Avantasia (2019) They have matured a lot with the years, this composition may interest you even more! There's an official lyric video on RUclips, it's quite good! The visual experience gives a lot to the song as well!
I get the impression power metal might not always be the most interesting to you with its repeated choruses, and lack of variety in keys/progressions etc. But as a fan I'm certainly glad to see it on the channel. I've seen a few suggestions for Ghost In The Moonlight by Avantasia and would absolutely echo that recommendation. I would also suggest the title track to Theatre of Salvation by Edguy (Tobias' other band) which is a bit more of an epic with a little bit more than just verse-chorus-solo going on. I'm always reminded of the Jim Steinman influence on Avantasia, especially that piano driven section after the solos in this piece. So I'm going to take the opportunity to again suggest doing some of his compositions. I think 'Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young' from the Streets of Fire soundtrack would make a really interesting listen. If nothing else to hear a pop/rock song end with a canon, and the sort of interweaving recurring motifs.
Well said. Which is why both The Seven Angels/Theater of Salvation and Jim Steinmann's stuff gives me the similar feelings of joy while listening. Great music.
Who noticed Doug started to headbang when double bass started? (10:33) 👍 Is he getting accustomed to it?.. 😉 It sure has its own role and beauty when in the right context, Imo. A suggestion for a reaction: Rhapsody. Or Rhapsody of Fire. Or Spawn of Possession, as a different example of a masterpiece, the track "Apparition".

Avantasia... So nostalgic!! Takes me back to when I was 17/18 in the beginning of college and for the first time I had some friends that actualy enjoyed metal and Prog like me. Good times!
I‘m so excited for your videos, Doug! I don‘t need TV in clinic right now, but only WLAN. 😃 Maybe you could do a reaction on „A Question Of Heaven“ from Iced Earth (power ballad)? Greetings from Germany! 🤘
BTW the mastermind of Avantasia, Tobias was only in his really early 20s when he composed and managed to create Avantasia which is pretty fascinating if for not else then for the reason of being able to gather so many established names of the genre to sing how he (Tobi) wants them to do! Nowadays Avantasia is a huge deal, it slowly became Tobias' main project and they gave huge concerts everywhere, getting a Wacken Main event in front of 80k+ metalheads. Nowadays this project which started out as a side project of Tobias and a sort of a love child became a "band" and they release a new album in every 2-3 years and usually go to tour right after, which was almost unheard of even 12-13 years ago when Scarecrow was released.
I really enjoyed how they arranged everything. The size of band and variety of voices allowed them to do some great stuff you never hear in metal vocal arrangement.
They have unfortunately never gotten all of the seven angels on stage at the same time :( Edit: But if you're interested in cool stage performances, The Scarecrow is a great live performance.
Avantasia has performed this song during the Flying Opera Tour, they use it as a closer so you get the FULL cast, not of the song, of the full production. From Cloudy Yang to the guitarist ;) Live they prefix it with Sign of the Cross.
The most interesting behind the story is Mr. Tobias Sammet, who is the main composer and mastermind of Avantasia. He plays bass, and if I'm not wrong, also piano, but the whole composition is his idea, including lyrics and the story as well. He is one of the greatest composers and singers in the metal scene, that's for sure :) He indeed wrote an opera in 2002 :) You are a genius Tobias Sammet!!!
Now I know why this is my favorite from Avantasia; Pachelbel's canon in D is, hands down, the best music piece ever created. After this one, check out Virgin Steele's "Veni, Vidi, Vici" and/or "Glory of the Empire" by Norwegian band Circus Maximus (inspired by the 2000 movie Gladiator).
Metal Opera pt. I & II... I knew Tobi from Edguy, but when I first heard Avantasia, it just "kicked me out of my pants" :-) After pt. I I was so excited to hear pt. II and then it came. "Seven Angels" as a first song was a blast :-O And you were given pretty hard task to react to such song :-)

Man I was about to write the same, Rhapsody will be a test for you Dough, Luca Turilli is a brilliant songwriter.
With Rhapsody/Luca Turilli there's a lot to choose. Of Michael the Archangel and Lucifer's fall is fantastic.
@@avex13 damn right man, I mean the man is a genious, every single rhapsody/rhapsody of fire albums are masterpieces, with real orchestra big time choruses, long songs, short songs... Man you name it and Luca and rhapsody of fire will deliver.
@@avex13 Guys, let's make some Noise with Rhapsody.. i posted 4 or 5 times Of Michael the Archangel and Lucifer's fall and Gargoyles, angels of darkness.. Turilli is genius! and need to be on this channel. Most of youtubers that reacted to Rhapsody and Luca, have no idea for music and composing musical pieces in deep.
i have suggested Rhapsody on his videos before but no one seems to back me up on that... i suggested "gargoyles..." and "the dark tower of abyss"
I used to love this album in my teens. Haven't heard it in probably 15 years. A nice reminder.
Perhaps not 15 years for me, but a very long time.
Discovered them many years ago, listening a webradio, with the song "The Story Ain't Over"... It had soon catched my attention.
I think that it's time to listen to this album again...
Ok wow, this song is fucking memorable as hell. I haven't heard this since... Probably a few years after it came out. And as soon as each change hit, I knew what was coming. Somehow this song was burned into my mind.
A lot of the songs are incredibly special I have no idea how they do it it’s actual magic
Wow!!!! Didnt know this band at all, and all of a sudden who do I hear ?? Helloween!!! Hahaha, great, loved it, thanks Doug.
Please do Communion and the Oracle by Symphony X
Yes!
Or Accolade II !
@@Hypetreme Or comparison of both "Accolades" I & II, to see how they relate lyrically AND musically, with the variation on primary motive. That would make perfect sense on a channel like this, run by composer.
Or "The Odissey"
@@cap.jbcoldyron987 He already made a video about that.
Oh yes, Avantasia.🤘🏻😍 A project by Tobias Sammet and every album is a concept album.😋 Please check out Avantasia - The Tower.😁
Thank you SO MUCH for doing this reaction. That's amazing!
Pre congratulations on 100k. My favorite "Reaction" channel.
Btw. I saw them live on Masters of Rock in Vizovice (don't ask me the year, it's long time and lots of beers ago ;) ). They played as the last band, 3 hours show, only Metal Opera I & II. F***ing AMAZING!!!
I almost didn't believe when I saw the title.
OMG this is epic!!!!
Always loved the first 2 albums. Great review man.
@@torgiwankenobi1155 Thanks for the recommendation! I checked it out - I see exactly what you mean. Cheers!
The Seven Angels is one of my favorite power / symphonic metal songs. So cool to see you covering it.
Impressive song, when I first heard it four years and a half ago and so did I with The Metal Operas Pt.1 and Pt.2, I was blown away. Thanks RUclips for making me discovery that amazing musicianship!!
And nice reaction as well Doug ^.^
So many memories and nostalgia, actually gave me chills. Thanks Doug for reacting to this song!
Sonata Arctica-White Pearl, Black Oceans
An amazing song.
Finally, Avantasia!!! I hope there will be more Avantasia songs. Perhaps Aina as well? Love it, Doug!
I watched this reaction just to listen to André Matos four lines... miss the lad a lot... cheers!
Finally a music commentator with perfect pitch. Too many "experts" can't tell what they're listening to without a keyboard and chord book to rebuild each part, which aggressively murders the flow. Well done.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Carolina IV, a great track featuring Andre Mattos, a guest vocalist on this song
Glad you enjoyed it if you do more Avantasia suggest The Scarecrow there is a great live version…. Top wish for metal Monday though is Rhapsody with Gargoyles Angels of Darkness!
I'm so glad reading people giving some love to Rhapsody, their whole catalog is a true musical fantasy ride musically and lyrically.
@@jesusguerra1093 let's make some Noise for Gargoyles!! is so epic!
@@jesusguerra1093 yeah! i'm a musician too...and gargoyles is just a song if we can list some others! per example, the bloody rage of the titans is so exotic but not mainstream song.., "dark tower of abyss have many baroque inspired sections that i love! and many many songs! i think Dough will love Luca if he takes in deep!
Doug you're surprising me day after day, video after video and I love your work more and more.
Why our children don't have musicians teachers like you in schools ??
A claisscal composer goin through so many different styles (and particularly metal, that i love), you're a real music lover and you share and transmit this. Thank a lot, greetings from France Sir ;)
Finally AVANTASIA, gave us more avantasia please!!
"The mystery of time" is one of the others storytelling albums and higly recomend "Savior in the Clockwork"
Yeaahhh! 👏
Avantasia's The Metal Opera Parts 1 and 2 are my favorites of their entire catalog. They bring me great joy in listening. I still play both albums several times each year. They flow very nicely, every track is great, and they put me in a good place emotionally. They are among my all-time favorite albums.
Same here. Those albums are masterpieces.
Amazing!! ❤️❤️❤️
I knew that this day would come, and this was the logic song to start with Avantasia. Now you can continue with Sign of the cross, The Great Mystery, The Scarecrow or Let the Storm Descent Upon You. They are all long songs with lots of sections. A little less "opera" I think, but still great songs.
Holy Land
Band: Angra - Brasil.
Song: Make Believe
I think you'll like them, I suggest the songs Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness (Rhapsody) and Chance (Savatage)
agree! Chance!!
Rhapsody - Emerald Sword
Yeah Rhapsody is hell of a band and "gargoyles" is heck of a song, you have a challenge there Dough I'm tellin'ya
@Hernán Contreras Gargoyles will be Great! there's a lot of good songs..but please, don't suggest Emerald Sword ahha!!
I think that "When the crowds are gone" by Savatage would be a good choice too.
I can't wait for reactions on that band, as well!
one of my favorite power metal songs
The Raven Child - Avantasia (2019)
They have matured a lot with the years, this composition may interest you even more!
There's an official lyric video on RUclips, it's quite good! The visual experience gives a lot to the song as well!
These recommendations are just getting better and better.
The best Edguy album 😎
maybe with a band that's much more jazzy/classical about it, like Twilight Force
Later Avantasia is more towards Jim Steinman or Trans-Sibirian Orchestra. More of a bombastic AOR sound.
Well said. Which is why both The Seven Angels/Theater of Salvation and Jim Steinmann's stuff gives me the similar feelings of joy while listening. Great music.
Who noticed Doug started to headbang when double bass started? (10:33) 👍
Is he getting accustomed to it?.. 😉
It sure has its own role and beauty when in the right context, Imo.
Good times!
Avantasia are a great choice. Tobias Sammet has done some brilliant tunes with this project, well worth checking out more.
You need to do "Chance" and "Gutter Ballet" from Savatage! lots of Piano in there too. I would say "Chance" is the Bohemian Rhapsody" in Metal.
Yes to "Chance", absolutely!
Strongly agree!
I‘m so excited for your videos, Doug! I don‘t need TV in clinic right now, but only WLAN. 😃
Maybe you could do a reaction on „A Question Of Heaven“ from Iced Earth (power ballad)?
Greetings from Germany! 🤘
Super interesting reaction man love it. Ive wished for it to actually be turned into a play or something, maybe one day.
Thanks to Kylie McInnes, as I thought I heard Michael Kiske singing. I have never heard Avantasia. I really liked this.
"The Mystery of Time" by Avantasia is a great Album my favourite. Worth checking out. :-)
This was great! I'd love to see you check out the Raven Child also by Avantasia
Wow these recommendations are on point, whoever is giving you these songs has the same music library as me.
Love Avantasia and I know nothing about music theory, so this was really interesting to watch!
I really enjoyed how they arranged everything. The size of band and variety of voices allowed them to do some great stuff you never hear in metal vocal arrangement.
Loved this video Doug.
I've listened to this song so many times and never realized the "Cannon" chords playing at the end. Wow.
Great video, Avantasia is an awesome project ! check out their live performance of Reaching for the light with the late André Matos (RIP)
"Lugaid Vandroi" is Michael Kiske from Helloween, you did Keeper of the seven keys from them.
"Seven Angels" as a first song was a blast :-O
And you were given pretty hard task to react to such song :-)
I love this song, i used to put this on repeat when I am on a bus.
The Scarecrow definitely is a must listen.👍
Thanks for doing this one Doug. Avantasia and Edguy are my favorites.
And now I'm your fan, Doug!
All songs from avantasia sounds happy for a metal music to my ears haha
But Tobias and Jorn Lande are awesome
