    Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was one of the shining lights of Pakistan, a Qawwali Shahehshah whose talent was heralded both locally and globally. To celebrate the legend that still lives 19 years on, Coke Studio presents
    Afreen Afreen, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan & Momina Mustehsan, Episode 2, Coke Studio 9
    Music Directed by Faakhir Mehmood
    Produced by Strings
    The beautifully crafted ‘Afreen Afreen’ sung two decades ago by the legendry, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan still holds the strength to serenade the audience with its poetic and soothing sensibilities. The reformation of the track on Coke Studio - arranged by Faakhir Mehmood and performed by maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and debutant, Momina Mustehsan - transforms the Qawwali seamlessly into an unplugged track. Within the genre, the atmosphere of the song remains ambient and acoustic, as the bare minimum elements give room to Rahat’s majestic vocals to improvise the mastery he possesses. Momina enters the song as she punctuates the additional melody with her laid-back effortless velvety vocals. Towards the end, the track is perfectly complimented with the incredible drum roll and a hyper groove as the traditional ‘Afreen Afreen’ chants are delivered with heartfelt emotion and melodic panache.

    Interesting to watch the reaction but I think only desis can truly appreciate the power of Rahat's voice, the deliberate mellowness of this song, the beautiful Urdu language and the passionate and poetic lyrics sung. I think most westerners prefer upbeat music you can dance to which is fair enough.

  • @harmony318
    @harmony318 4 года назад +39

    My reaction to this reaction, Western people need to educate themselves. I completely understand the cultural and language barrier, might have personal likings in music, but that man holds the title of 'Ustaad'. You need years of training to get that title and to do what he is doing there. Judging him can offend a lot of people, keep that in mind.

    These people have absolutely zero qualification to assess Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
    You're talking about someone trained from the age of 8 for decades by another maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
    What he forgot about music these may never learn even in 7 reincarnations.
    This is not just singing for such artists, it is a spiritual practice....

    It's not the Pakistani way of singing, it's language of Urdu, which is so pleasing to the ears and so beautiful on the tongue. And really do you guys not tell them background of the singers, RFAK has 600 years of Qawals behind him, the original UNFAK was known was the king of Qawals, the most beautiful voice to bless this earth.
    Afreen Afreen is a classic, this song has passed through generations and still holds up, i remember listening to it when i was about 12-13, and at 30 it still makes me fall in love again. The end 'where it got fast is called a 'Sargam' (pronounced ser-gum) and is usually made on the spot by the artist, as and what they feel like, it can be as long or extremely short like the one in the video, but sometimes it can be as long as 5-10 minutes, and is honestly the best part of traditional music.
    A sargam is basically the 7 notes, Sa, Re Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Si) arranged in different order, over and over again, similar to scatting.

    Songs like these are more close to the culture of the subcontinent..the lyrics the style of singing everything..so of course they wont appreciate it as much as say Pakistanis and Indians etc would..so why not show them videos they can relate and enjoy to save them the embarassment?

    • @emkayyy7940
      @emkayyy7940 7 лет назад +2

      abcd123 56 there is no embarrassment, they don't like it when they are not used to of that way of singing :p

    • @dhitikas8827
      @dhitikas8827 7 лет назад +5

      aymen capsicum yes hence the embarassment..they can't heartily praise it cause they are clueless about the style neither can they say they outright hate it cause well they're on youtube so..its better to react to genres they are a little familiar with maybe

    • @emkayyy7940
      @emkayyy7940 7 лет назад +1

      abcd123 56 maybe but don't you think reacting to Pakistani music should mean actual Pakistani music and not just the genre they'd understand.... its ok if they don't get it no one is judging them for it,

    • @dhitikas8827
      @dhitikas8827 7 лет назад +4

      aymen capsicum Yeah I would love to see actual desi stuff but seeing their past videos most of them seem not so interested to watch new videos of other cultures or look forced sometimes..not all of them though..only some of them take the effort to understand what actually is being shown thats all

  • @saurabhdey5167
    @saurabhdey5167 7 лет назад

    The final upbeat part is what is called a "Sargam". It's unique to music from Indian subcontinent. Basically the singer goes bonkers spelling out the notes. So he was singing sa(do) re(re) ga(mi) me(fa) pa(so) dha(la) ni(ti) and mixing it up and shredding it... same way you'd hear guitar shredding with superfast notes all in the same key.
    Coolest part is that this is always done on the spot. It's done to showcase the singer's control over notes and to give a happy surprise to the audience.

    This is my fav song from all seasons of pak coke studio. Originally sung by the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (uncle of the singer here, Rahat F.A.K) & written by Javed Akhtar (prominent Indian lyricist). Everytime I listen to it, I can only wonder at the artistic talents of these two great pple.

    The thing is this song is more related to Pakistani culture and all about praising the Lord. Of course due to the language barrier they won't understand the true meaning of the song unless some back info is provided to them. Would love to see them react to some rock Pakistani songs (preferably Rockstar by Ali Zafar)
    Nonetheless, enjoyed the video!

      The writer of the song is Indian and the production company of the album Sangam was also Indian and label was that of a British company. Just because u let a Pakistani actress act in an Indian movie doesn't make it a Pakistani movie.. similarly jst letting a Pakistani singer sing song written by Indian writer for Indian album doesn't make it Pakistani .
