I learned today in school that there is no standardized EQ parameters that will work on everything 100% of the time. Removing 160 Hz could potentially create low end separation, however it could also remove warmth and thin a sound out. So the correct answer should be to listen first before doing this.
🫵🏿👍🏿💯
This and a few other frequency’s 100% work every time in the mains.
@@DbiPro well that sure depends on the source signal doesn't it, it's incorrect to say that it works 100% of the time
The message that I got from the video was the concept of creating separation. I never really took it as him saying:"always drop 160Hz". My song is geared for people who listen through cheap mobile phones so my "bass" is at 250hz, so I'm gonna take his advice and drop 250Hz notb160. I don't think anybody takes advice like this as is, people know to just take the concept of the advice not the letter of it. Create and use space.
These mixing tips from this dude are just hillarious sometimes. This tip is absolitely nonsensical, as you say. There is other ways of taming low end frequencies, such as multiband compression on the bass, side chaining the kick on the bass or simply well done gain staging
And ESPECIALLY lookong out for phase issues which nobody ever talks about bit which are probably the single biggest issue for low end. (Get a correlation meter. Voxengos is even free). Or just simply eqing out certain low end frequencies on different low end instrumwnts to reach seperation (e.g. removing up to 200 hz on the organ and removing 200 to 400 hz on the bass,...)
But no, of course you could just randomly delete 160 hz for no reason for ecery single mix)
He could have made a video 7 mins long just for Ad revenue, but he didn’t
Legend
Legit!
These kind of short videos will give him subscribers the most. Every youtube producer should be doing this
with these short vids, hes now the goat of producer youtubers
Yeah ... except for his "I don't use saturators in my mixes and instead use tape machine plugins.". I still chuckle at that short he did. 😂
Streaky dropping every known and unknown mixing method into shorts 😂 making money from RUclips while chatting about what you love while bringing in new customers. How much for a master ninja man?
Absolutely not. Just incredibly flawed tips
This is the first shorts vid that made me gain brain cells instead of losing them
You've lost too many get off yt shorts. Spell losing correctly.
Yes I'm joking. I know it was a typo
@@CMG02YT*
This comment made my brain cells loose 💀
😂😂LMAO
@@HenriqHilltop130The eq tip in this video is absolutely terrible, no good studio engoneer would ever suggest you do that for all your mixes
Streak, you’ve jumped to a new level in YT world. Before, you were extremely important. Now you’re essential. You’re improving my skill and reputation every time you post one of these short bits. I’m grateful for what you put out for us, and have mad respect for your skills and ethic!
Dude, your eq presets are already awesome. For mixing and mastering. Best buck I’ve spend
Yep! I notice that a lot of Rage Against The Machine tracks have a fairly big dip in this area. And the kick and bass work great for that reason
💯
100 and 200 can live comfortably then, ahhhhh!
is this for master bus or on individual track? n00b here
@@lordberlygreat question actually! Your mind is in the right place.
I’m thinking this is applicable for drum buss as well as master buss. Depends if you want to eq the entire thing or just the drums!!
Since the master buss will also have vocals, guitars etc. Sometimes they seep into that eq range, of course: they shouldn’t, if you did your hi and lo cuts correctly for those tracks/ busses before going into the master buss. Cheers !!
@@lordberly great question actually! Your mind is in the right place.
I’m thinking this is applicable for the master buss. Depends if you have a separate buss for the kick/drums and bass (hey you can do anything with routing)
the master buss can also have vocals, guitars etc. Sometimes they seep into that eq range, of course: they shouldn’t, if you did your hi and lo cuts correctly for those tracks/ busses before going into the master buss. Cheers !!
Ok, I’ve been working on a project FOREVER, and I thought I finally had it all finished yesterday. Then I saw this video, and tried it out. 🤯 Now I have to go back and do this on every track! It never ends!
If it sounds good for you, it is good. Don't trust this kind of guy that tell bullshits like this one, it is not even in context...
@@pierreguignery8826 mate thats rubbish. This is a definite proven technique, though it is not necessary to do on individual channels.
Proven on some cases, what i found sad is that someone rework on some tracks just because someone known one youtube tell you to do THAT EQ trick on every mastering. The process on its own is bullshit because mastering isn't a copy/paste process
@@pierreguignery8826 i understand where you are coming from. I get angry/annoyed with people perpetuating "rules" they dont understand but in this case it really works. This frequency range often gets cluttered on a full mix. Its also not a very audible or nice sounding frequency range. So on the mix bus or at the mastering stage trying this technique will 9 out of 10 times make a noticeable difference to the perceived clarity and volume of the entire track. If it doesn't then by all means dont do it.
Streaky made this video incredibly short because thats what most people want, his voice even cuts at the end of the video. Hes a good guy bud. Peace
You are right i will give him a try haha. May be it is the format of the videos that is not what i like, but concerning mastering there isn't much to eat on RUclips..
Ahhhh these are golden... Short, to the point, mega useful. Thank you Lord Streaky
every other youtuber needs 23 minutes for this. you are my hero :-)
I normally exit halfway through the 20 minute intro.
I would rather watch a 23 minute video with a detailed explanation and theory and examples with different instruments in context. This short don't describe why this works and how it works. 0 info.
I think wanting shorter content is a creator of this generation. I personally don’t have a problem watching a 20 minute video when it’s informing me of why I’m doing something and in detail. This is just quick and doesn’t explain why you want to do this
Interesting. I discovered this basic idea by accident. 160Hz or thereabouts, 1dB or thereabouts. It helps, I think, to contribute to an "open" feeling.
Is this technique for each individual sounds mixer track or on the master track?
These short vids with such powerful info are the best thing to happen to youtube production tutorials! Thank you!
Ahhh !! Separating the low end is gonna allow you to really define it. This is actually a game changing tip for some. Getting the low end right is a hurdle for learners
Tip: try to discover phase issues in the low end.
@@marcusstrymon693 yes, phase should be taken care of before any other processes
Makes sense ,cause this is where low mid separates from low end
Love this quick-and-to-the-point tip!! Thank you! 30 seconds that will forever make my life better.
I'm blown away by this format - just great - thank you NOW
Are we talking on the master or on bass channels? I find this helps on the kick for sure but keen to try it on the master eq then
Master eq most definitely
I didn't believe you and just tried it. Well, now you have a die hard subscriber. 😮 Mind blowing!
Same here. I thought "this is bullsh*t" but it works. Now I want to know WHY.
Streaky, I think you should recalibrate your control room. Imagine you get mixes which your tip has been already applied - then lower there again? Really ALL mixes.... ???
He is talking about dropping half a dB to create separation.
My thoughts too
Dude is straight yapping
You taught this in the mastering course. So good! I use it all the time
JBL does this with their boomboxes and partyboxes, they drop that upper bass region by around 5db to male the lower regions pop.
Bob Rock I think used to do this with a Pultec midrange EQ at whatever “200hz” actually is on those boxes :)
This is a trick in live settings too, most rooms have some kind of weird resonance there so there's usually some kind of dip i do around that area on the master stereo eq of any setup I run.
Yeah but you mix to sound good in other rooms. Why dip it to sound good in your room? Maybe other places don't have this resonance problem.
Much better tip eq specifically for the track your working on
Sounds like a cooking show commercial! LOL Cheers Streaky!
get them fundamentals in control, these are great Streaky freq tips
Do you have any idea how much your tips have helped my mixes ESPECIALLY, ME BEING A BEGINNER . Cant thank you enough .
So cool man. Your videos are so good and to the point. I tried this move on one of my new originals I’m working on and it did the trick. It made a difference. Thank you!!!
And that's how you do it! Thanks Streaky
Thank you! Love how concise this is.
Thankyou very much Streaky maestro audio. Your explanation always give me awesomeness!... in my mix.
I got no words how to thank ❤ if any struggling producers reading this no more frustrations just follow his channel or if you're late dig his channel. And focus also on what he is saying 🎉🎉🎉
Love this format Streaky!
What? That's it?!! :D:D Will definately try this trick, thanks as always, Streaky.
I love these quick videos
Love the tips and tricks Streaky so thank you....just wondering if you would ever do an hour or so long watch-a-long of you doing a live mix or mastering session with one of my progressive house tunes 😁
I'm sure everyone would love to see that.
these short videos are 🔥...noticing current songs r getting shorter too
As a engineer myself this is a useful tip to any beginners 🙌
Yep. Sometimes its a fraction higher though
Been using this trick ever since you first talked about it in one of your early videos back at metropolis 👏☕️
Thanks for following me all that time 👍🙏
Each track in the DAW or just the Master EQ?
I love these short clips man! thank you so much!
loving the quick tips
I've learned so much from your shorts, more than from every RUclips tutorial ever😅
I dunno why are u doing this, probably to become a legend 😂 Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us :)
I've been doing this on my mixes for years. Here I thought I had invented my own little technique 😅
I tend to use a medium tight Q though. I'll have to try widening it a bit and see how I like it
Can you how it feels with that wider EQ for you..?
@@hypnobombia8054 when I tried it yesterday, I noticed a difference with the Q width. I was actually surprised by how much difference I could hear just between 3.5 and 4. Or even 3.5 and 3.7. I usually preferred 3.7, in my case.
To the point as always, glad you mentioned this one!
What are we eq’ing 😂😂 vocals? Instruments? Everything?
Or the whole mix?
wow, wasn't expecting that. 🙏🙏🙏
Just tried it...I'll thank you now.
Does he mean for the vocals, or everything else?
Streaky, do you do this on your mixes?
Amazing tip again Streaky! 😊Yeah, it's working all the time, but the frequency depends on the key of the track (between 130-170 Hz) sweeping the EQ, and find the sweet spot. Also around 400 Hz, 700-800, and above 6000Hz, is the problematic areas on most mixes.
My guy streaky 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Cool new little video format! Keep it up, thanks!
Works great on my mixes. Between 130-160 every time.
do you use it on master bus?
YES MATE
Just said what he had to say and that’s it. I’ve literally relogged to give u another sub and like this is how much I appreciate going straight to the point.
Is this on the master setting? Thanks for the advice mate
Mix bus or just in general for tracks that are muddy?
thank you Streaky, seriously the best
I believe Mick Guzauski also swears by this little trick, there's often a lot of build up in the 150-160hz region
I learnt it from an old pro
Thanks mastering ninja!!!
Yooo🤯 I hear my bass chillin
You Crack me up man 😂. Ace tip as always! Thanks you ❤️
Definitely going to try this
That's right where the body of the snare drum is!
Dude this is dopeeeee !!!!!!! i love it !!!!
Perfect timing I’m working on a mix right now😂!
@streaky combine all these quick tips for mixing / mastering in a single video for each session type . Charge £xx for it to download. Then we can run it in a DAWs video player and boom! Streaky over your shoulder while you mix and master. 👌🏻
In my case was -0,95db the perfect value! 😂
THANK YOU STREAKY!!! 👍👏
Dude you are a content beast. Bravo. Amazing tips too
I did that yesterday without asking on youtube lol😂
am just here to see if there's more before i go back to DAW for mixing
Thanks ! That's what I was looking for
Great!
Allow me to introduce a new unit of measurement for sound volume,
which I call vovol* (abbreviated: volume voltage).
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: You use two pre-stages, one with positive volume values, and the other negative.
For example, so has the pre-step with positive values
a measurement from +0 decibels up to +20, while the one with negative values, has from -0 decibels down to -20 decibels.
The highest voltage occurs when the value is +20 and -20 decibels (or: 20 vovol),
while there is low voltage, when the value is on
+0 and -0 decibels (or: 0 vovol).
You can possibly also combine two different values with each other, by adjusting the value to +10 -20 vovol, which gives a crisper effect. Have experimented with this myself at work and at home.
The adjustment can of course be set to taste, but the purpose of vovol for me is to equalize the sound volume, so that you better hear weak sounds and at the same time avoid high deafening sound levels (loudness war's).
Thank you for reading this!
Take care of your hearing...
:-)
Awesome video anyway!
What shelf did he adjust?
Do you apply to this to every track in your session bar kick and snare or is this solely to go on a master?
Also high-pass the 808 and it’ll sound fire 🔥🔥
Works GREAT! Def a keeper.
Ha, this tip just confirms what I’ve been doing all along. I must have a good ear ...
THanks a lot! This content is very useful for us mortals
Is this for the master channel eq for the whole beat
I just did, and it worked. So thank you now (which is later) !!! :-)
haha to the point love this , do more ur going to rock 2021 with this style , LESS IS MORE as we say hey kiD
Are you doing. This to the bass itself or the whole mix?
This Is Genius! 💥💥💥💯💯💯
Thanx! 🙏🏿
Streaky, I love your videos.
I have a slightly unrelated question:
When you talk about mastering loudness hitting -8 are you talking about Long term Integrated LUFS?
Or do you focus on the Short Term LUFS or RMS at the loudest point of the song?
Integrated
On the master? On the melody? On the drums?
On the master.
@@b.hornetiii.6771 not in the mixing stage... just mastering?
@@elzycollins In the mixing stage you "adjust" the low end of individual parts such as kick drum and bass so they "work together" (for example), so you use eq settings "ignoring" that "golden eq setting" like you don't know it and you tweak eq's so low end works in the mix. If you do that thing in the mix already it's like you're putting paint on the car when the car is still just chasy and the motor and you're adjusting the motor of the car. :)) If your mix has combined elements like "low end" (already mixed together) and you're adjusting the levels, than yes; but even than I wouldn't do that. Leave it for the last stage; you see you're mix in a different perspective when it's only two track mix and you work on it. You have less options and it focuses your mind and creativity and you see (hear) things you didn't hear before when all the heavy duty weapons come in like eq, compression, saturation, widening etc.
On kick track? Bass track? Master bus? Where do you put it?
This is immortal.
I think it would work better, when you know your song key and then you'll find exact frequency of your tonal note in this range (octave). And drop it a little.
hero. you saved my life
Thanks! Where is the EQ supposed to go tho? Mix bus? Vox? 2 Track?
The King!
Love this tips👍
Works like magic 👍🏿
You did not specify on what channel it should be used on. Are you talking about the master channel?
Is this something you do on the mix bus/master bus so it effects all tracks or do it to individual?
Sorry, but where to put the EQ ? On the Master you mean? Or some specific individual channel?
Hi Streaky ! Thank you for all your videos. I just wanna know why this is eq golden is at 160 hz ? Why 160hz ? Thank you.
This is gold
thanks for this one!! is there an equivalent for the highs?
It depends, on the lows I’ll go 150Hz to 180Hz. And boost around 80Hz or so.
For the highs listen 2k to 5k, you’ll find what you’re looking for, a shelf from 12k for restoration.
The Pros do this a lot, the mastering process of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams for instance.
(These frequencies are subjective)
