Ok so I'm actually trying to collect some data too, so if you're willing to help let me know where you're from and tell me how "accepted" it is to watch anime where you're from.
Like in Japan it's completely normal but I heard it's considered childish in some countries
    Edit:
ok now I just figured out something, so there are some people who wouldn't initiate conversations about anime though they watch a lot of anime and I was curious why, but according to your comments it seems talking about anime or watching anime itself is considered childish/cringe in some countries huh, interesting

As for research: Note that this is from someone older than RUclips (2002 squad):
Anime is generally just treated as any other cartoon would by the masses, and in Secondary School people were open about watching animes like Assassination Classroom, and never got targeted for it* as far as I know. Granted, nobody exerted their weebness, either, they were just acting like normal people watching anime because most animes are pretty solid.
      * I was in a Grammar School, aka the post-primary-school-exam-passers-only secondary school variant, though tbh with some peoples' behaviour there I don't think this variable would have affected things all that much.
Note: Watching cartoons as an adult is... it depends, really, how you get perceived.

Indonesia has a lot of weebs, even the word "Wibu" ("weeb" in Indonesian pronunciation) is also included in the Indonesian Dictionary, which is a term for someone who likes and is interested in Japanese culture, especially from anime
And yes, Naruto was the most famous anime at that time, especially for children born in the 90-2000s, the reason was because Naruto aired at primetime hours where children got time to watch tv, Naruto also aired daily (usually Monday-Friday), compared to other anime which only appear on Sundays, this makes Naruto's popularity among children wider

Filipino weeb here, and the portrayal of Filipino weebs in the video is so accurate. I'd say, I'm proud that I grew up in a generation where animes were a part of our primetime viewing habit, especially in the 90s. They're so popular that they usually beat the local dramas produced by their rivals. 😅
BTW, the "Boku no Pi-" thing is totally accurate. If someone recommends Boku no Pi- to an anime first-timer, most probably, they are Filipinos.

I'm from France and it's 100% accepted. From what the americans would call "nerd" to "jock", everyone watch anime. Is not seen in a bad light. Anime like One Piece and other, it's so well knows in France that everyone, even those who doesnt watch anime, know. It's not small or niche in France. That like saying, "yeah I like action movies" or something like that. Also, for your information, Anime was the youth of my father (hes 50). My father legit had all the tomes (so I read them. Several times), also anime like Albator, and the such in DVD. Just to give you an exemple; That not something that got popular trough the internet, like in the US. Also, anime convention and the such are more like for family instead of "weeb" only. Most of the times, in France, people thats likes animes will be interested and dive deeper into the Japanese culture. You dont even know how many Japan Crazy (Fou du Japon; In French, this has a good sense) there is. Those you see are just a fraction of it. In my highschool, there was a petition to hire a Japanese Teacher to teach Japanese as a third language. I could talk hours about it.
Also. If you know how to draw manga style (memories from when I was in Junior High and High School) it's make you someones cool. Even very shy peoples who draws during break in the courtyard had like 5 to 10 peoples watching them draw. Some of them were extremly popular among the other students.

Yeah, its not unrealistic, althou we haven't really had much of a viking culture for the past 800 years or so.. We've been a monarchy for a very long time.
Why we feel so much similarities with Japanese is probably also because of Jantelagen.. the unwritten law/rule of "don't believe you are better then anyone else" which has given us genuine swedes a very respectful approach to others. The way we try not to inconvenience others etc.

    • @Destinum
      @Destinum Год назад +15

Linking it to warrior culture seems like a bit of a stretch, but even if there's some merit to that, the vikings have nothing to do with it. I'd say the main similarities are that both societies value humility and respect for other people, but the origins for those behaviors are completely different: In Japan, it stems from a collectivist view on society, where the well being of the group is prioritized over that of the individual, whereas in Sweden it stems from things like strong worker unions creating a cultural identity of equality.
All of this leads to an interesting dynamic where surface-level behavior is very similar, but the underlying cultural values behind that behavior are basically the complete opposite. Schools in each respective country are an interesting reflection of this: Japanese schools post grades openly for anyone to see and require students to wear uniforms. In Sweden, doing either of these things is straight up illegal.

So I think you did a pretty good job with your observations.
Regarding acceptance of anime I have to say that it changed a lot in the last 15 - 20 years. As a fan of manga/anime in the late 90s, early 2000s it wasn't that easy. It was hard to get animes and games and they were expensive af.
There were only some shown in the middle of the night on smaller TV channels. And they were mostly aduld oriented.
So for most people "Animes" were those strange foreign animated movies full of s*x and violence.

That said, I think there's probably a lot of Americans who fall into the category you mentioned (which makes me think you're probably from the US). If there's a cultural spectrum, the US and Japan fall on opposite ends in a lot of ways. So, for the same reasons they might love Japan, they would probably dislike the US.

While it is also a US thing, because it is quite culturally relevant to be actively rebellious towards mainstream opinions, it still happens everywhere for sure.
It comes more from lack of knowledge of the depth of culture and its impact on people, as people instead accredit culture to simply be things like aesthetics, common clichés, food, and media preference, which is culture runs way deeper than a couple of face value obvious aspects such as that.
Cultures are way deeper and the more you immerse in one that is not your own, the more you realize its not about better or worse ever.
Its not an overgeneralization. You can't understand it until you live it. But no matter what if you end up living and experiencing another culture you will end up with culture shock at some point no matter how much you are into it and how much you are prepared.

As a german the german weeb seems to be just your average german under the age of 50 with an actual hobby. Actually, most people here have grown up with Anime as their favorite cartoon since the 70s without even knowing that they're anime (the bee maja, children from the berghof, little princess sara, z for zorro, calimero, lady oscar and many more). So when millenials in the 90s started to discover Sailormoon and Superkickers and realized that the older cartoons were animes too, they got super hyped. And that was pretty much the start of the anime/weebo wave here in Germany.
At that time it was considered cringe to watch anime that were obviously anime or even read Manga. I have the feeling that it is widely more accepted among gen Z and younger millenials, like most other niche hobbies and lifestyles.

Many people talked about them in classes publicly as it was a totally normal thing and it was even considered a cool hobby. I think people started to feel ashamed about their hobbies when all those ecchi stuff began in the 2010s and stupid people, who discovered the internet, spread cringey scenes of them to create the impression that anime and manga is sexist and misogynistic.

About anime in sweden, I think it's gotten a lot more popular recently, but if you grew up in the 80's and 90's you basically watched silverfang, space adventure cobra, ryu the cave boy or starzinger and later on ninja scroll, akira and maybe some ghibli movies. Back in those days you could only get anime on VHS tapes, most of the older shows were badly dubbed to swedish and heavily edited.

I'm from the UK and been inspired by Japanese style animation since the mid 80's. The creators where so creative that covered alot of subjects in society. Alot of people I've spoken to would deem me weird because it was the idea of japan over the idea of a story that was animated.
When I started speaking to japanese people they told me it was weird that I was interested in gaming and media from Japan. Though sadly they didn't know the creativity of the likes of Sony, nintendo and sega or knew any famous composers or directors work that was inspiring the world. So in the end it was a negative approach from all just because of a media. Though the same worldwide people wouldn't of got said If I.e was expressing art or music from a Disney movie with art/music
Now I feel that the approach to term anime has been more acceptable and adaptive in western culture. That now there is more comic cons In western countries and dub translations that sell well than the days of just having it japanese
