The empty space between the audience and the arena is due to this being a multi-arena from the 70's. They have concerts and other things here as well. The arenas dedicated to hockey usually have the audience sitting right up to the protective glass.

TWO of the greatest goal tenders in the NHL has played in Frölunda. Henrik "The King" Lundqvist (New York Rangers) and Fredrik Andersen (Carolina Hurricanes). The latter used to play for Toronto Maple Leafs, as well ;)
Edit 1: The indian chief you can see on the jerseys of the fans is the old logo. The team used to be called Frölunda Indians before a woman with native American ancestors thought it was offensive, the case got reviewed by a native American association and they deemed it not racist. The team changed the logo and name anyway, in 2021.
Skellefteå AIK (SAIK) is not associated with AIK, the team from Stockholm. SAIK stands for Skellefteå Allmänna IdrottsKlubben. It's a franchise with the same logo for both hockey and football. AIK IF stands for Allmänna IdrottsKlubbens IshockeyFörening. AIK is also a sports franchise from Stockholm with the same logo for different sports such as hockey and football.

    • @iarmycombo5659
      @iarmycombo5659 8 месяцев назад +12

If my Swedish classes from a Finnish high school arent failing me terribly, the AIK is the same because it means "Public Sports Club", like "PSC", if that was a common abbrevietion in English. So the real difference is probably usually the first letter which is often from the city name although they both would start with S so i guess its good the other one in this case is IF so "icehockey club" if i recall correctly. The AIK from Stockholm is according ti the most trusted source, wikipedia, is called just AIK probably because its kind of the AIK cuz its probably biggest and most popular cuz its from the capital. (Förening is more like an association i think but i would assume in this case its more like club. Klubben also means club. So if im translating correctly, the nuance is probably lost [some might argue im thus not translating correctly])

From what I've read on the Indian logo, it was added in the late 80s or 90s when a lot of Swedish teams tried to "Americnanize"(Canadize?) themselves with mascots. Västra Frölunda as the team was original named and being on the west coast gave them a Wild West nickname, but they didn't want cowboys and guns.
After dropping the Indian logo and nickname, the first new logo was absolutely terrible, but the new one is pretty neat and is based on a much older logo, so if anything, they are returning to their roots.

@@92xsaabaru- In the early 80's (if I'm not mistaken) Västra Frölunda was nick named Vilda Western (The Wild West) as they had a couple of tough guys on the team. I think that was part of the reason as to why they switched to Frölunda Indians once the Swedish teams tried to become more americanized with their names, merch, mascots and such. I may well be wrong though... 🤣

The arenas are usually multipurpose, not just for hockey. So the boards can be dismantled easily and floors can be placed over the ice to host a concert or w/e. It can be setup and dismantled in less than a few hours. If you ever go to a hockey only arena, you get seats close to the boards or can even stand up against the boards.

Back in the mid 90's, many SHL (then SEL) teams added English words to their names. If I recall correctly it was encouraged by the league in order to try to increase viewership by making Swedish hockey feel a bit more Americanized. Frölunda went with, eh, Frölunda Indians for some reason. A name they kept until 2021! Djurgården was Djurgården Lions for a while. Some others were Bofors Bobcats, HV71 Blue Bulls (🤣), and Oskarshamn Atomics. Many teams later dropped the English word.

Frölunda were referred to as "Wild West" ever since the lovely, crazy Canuck brothers Mott played for the team in the 70s. In the 90s, the teams in SHL chose a name similar to NHL teams. Luleå Bears, Färjestad Wolves and so on. Frölunda had to pick something related to the Wild west., so they chose Indians. Frölunda Indians was perhaps the only name in the league that really stuck, so it remained until a few years ago. They finally removed the Indian after the discussion about team names from North America came here.

About the beer and alcohol in Sweden, the laws are super strict about having permits for selling. You cannot buy beer over 3,5% in general stores or kiosks, only in places that have a permit for it. That's also why you cannot bring it outside of the bar, because the permit is only for that specific area of the arena.

  • @Alcatrazz13

The native american on the logo is from back in the 80s when SHL and the NHL did a crossplatform. Alot of swedish teams got "American style" names including Frölunda (Indians).
Not that long ago Frölunda removed the old logo after a native american woman sued them. She lost that case though as Frölunda had an "ok this logo isn't racist" from the Native American Association from back in the day. They did change the logo even though they won, because times have changed and stuff that weren't offensive back then might be percieved as offensive now.

To answer why the Scandinavium looks "cheap" is because they rebuilt the arena some years ago to have a good large sized indoor concert arena for bigger international stars. However Nya(eng: new) Ullevi has a mechanical roof and due to it's size it was simply the better option to haul in a massive amounts of people. So big national stars and not so big international stars performs here now if they ever decide to tour multiple Swedish cities not only Stockholm.

One potential reason that the boards and ice looks different, since you seem to bring it up at the start of both this and the djurgården video, is that Scandinavium is not a permanent hockey arena, and the ice is thusly not permanent either. Djurgårdens is probably permanent. As for why we're not crowding the boards, I guess its one of those 'we've always done it this way, so now we just use safety as an excuse to keep it that way'. As far as I know, most large arenas in the US and Canada are permanent and purpose built, correct me if I am wrong.

A few years ago Frölunda was called Frölunda Indians and therefore had an indian logo, since the word Indian can be found offensive they had to change it.
The arena Scandinavium is very old, so not a good arena to represent SHL (1st division).

For some reason, Gothenburg was called the Wild West.
Then Frölunda thought they should have an Indian (who were mostly spectators to the Wild West and were slaughtered)
Then a old hippie woman schooled Västra Frölunda so they had to change the logo.
Then they changed to a logo that already existed and were schooled again from the Patent and Registration Office.
And now they have this one.
That looks like zoom on a referees torso with an unzipped zipper.
(Frölunda usually gets verdicts with them. So it feels like a quite spot on logo) ;)

AIK (The Public Sports Club) is the original team from Stockholm and also the largest club in Sweden in terms of fans. Soccer is today where you find most of their fans. Skellefteå AIK is bad copy (which is obvious when comparing the two clubs logos), but their hockey team is really good these days.
Largely thanks to financial support from the city of Skellefteå despite having a financial deficit. In Stockholm it’s exactly the opposite. Hockey teams AIK and Djurgården receive no support at all from the city and find it difficult to conduct sports activities. At the same time that Stockholm has good finances and its surplus is distributed to cities such as Skellefteå, Malmö, Karlstad, Leksand, Örnsköldsvik, Ängelholm, Timrå, Oskarshamn, Luleå. All with teams in division 1. So you can say that the money that the city of Stockholm should use to give Djurgården and AIK a reasonable environment to work in, is sent to the clubs in the SHL (division 1).
Don't know how long you're in Sweden but if you want to experience the undisputed best atmosphere in Sweden make sure to buy tickets for the Twin Derby in Stockholm between AIK - Djurgården, Sunday 21 April.

    Some facts:
Skellefteå AIK: The choice of name came from the fact that Idrottsbladet was a popular read at the time and they wrote a lot about AIK, which was very popular throughout the country at the time. Therefore, they stayed with the club name Skellefteå AIK. You could read about this on Skellefteå AIK Fotboll's website until the association merged with some other clubs in January 2006 to form Skellefteå FF.
Since 1921, when choosing a club color and club mark, it was an easy choice. AIK had black jerseys with yellow collars, so Skellefteå AIK would naturally have black jerseys with yellow collars, and since AIK's socks were black and yellow striped, Skellefteå AIK's socks were also black and yellow striped.
Other than that, Skellefteå AIK and AIK are totally different clubs from different citys. Skellefteå AIK is from Skellefteå way up north in Sweden while AIK is from Solna, which is just outside Stockholm.
Frölunda HC? 2022 Frölunda switched from a typical American NHL logo which was the Indian, to a more traditional club brand. The traditional club brands are much more popular in Sweden and the NHL logos are traditionally frowned upon.
The decision to go from the Indian to this new brand was made in late 2021 due to the debate that was going on then about the racism in these logos and was met with mixed reactions. Some wanted a change, some really loved the Indian.
The new club brand was voted for on a membership meeting by the members. For information, in Sweden all sports clubs are ruled by members (Members own 51% of the club), and anyone can become a member for a small fee (in Frölunda HC it's 500kr which is about 50 USD). So basically the decision to go with this particular brand was made by the members. Although the decision to walk away from the Indian was made by the board in Frölunda HC, without including the members, which they should have done.
The reason that you see so many people with the Indian shirt in the arena is because some don't want to put money into buying a new jersey and some simply prefer the Indian and don't want to wear a jersey with the new brand. Me? I prefer the new brand.

Hovet is a very very old arena and scandinavium is a old multi- arena. In scandinaviums case the seats don't go all the way to the ice since the might have icehockey one day and then a Iron Maiden consert the next day. Malmö Arena is a multi-arena of NHL standard where the seats go all the way up until the ice but is is also built in modern times with that in mind. Does it look great? No but we like the old arenas to in Sweden, mabey they can fix it and bring in some more seats, i don't know.
Stop walking up to the convenient shops/kiosks to get your beer. They are not allowed by Swedish law to sell anything stronger than 3,5 %. Every arena has 1 or more real bars not counting the restaurant where you can get real beer, wine, drinks...everything u need.
The name AIK stands får "Allmänna Idrottsklubben/General sporting club" and is used by many typs of teams and sports around Sweden.
It basicly means that Skellefteå AIK might do or has done everything from football, icehockey, gymnastics, bowling, winther sports....any kind of sport within the realm of the club Skellefteå AIK.
Then you might have a different team in Skellefteå that was founded as a pure fotball club that might be called Skellefteå FC, i don't live there so i have no ide but this is what the name means, same for AIK from Stockholm, best know for fotball (even though they are the worst club in Sweden together with all the clubs from stockholm) but the club was not founded as a pure fotball club, that was just one of many sports they did, hence the name Allmänna idiotklubben.
In terms of the best place to watch icehockey of the remaning teams in the SM-slutspel i would say Rögle BK in Catena Arena in Ängelholm. It might be sold out but if you could you should go there, and for the love of god, don't complain about the 3,5% if u get at the snackbar. Go to the real bar in the arena and get yourself a real beer.

A lot of the home fans are wearing the older jersey. Frölunda had the indian logo up until a few years ago, when they suddenly decided to change to a more PC logo.
As for Skellefteå (Schell-ef-te-au), they have nothing to do with AIK from Stockholm, as the town is located about 800 km north of Stockholm. AIK is simply an abbrevation of Allmän IdrottsKlubb (public athletic club). But of course, its obvious that Skellefteå has copied the colors and most of the logo from AIK in Stockholm.

I hope Djurgården goes up this year and school everyone on atmosphere again. They usually get's rated highest by sports critiques when it comes to loudness and creating atmosphere especially during playoff hockey. And as a hockey fan I agree, it's just different. Though cred to the other teams been stepping it up in recent years with their crowds. The second division just brings everything down naturally though. Less interesting teams and rivalries, smaller arenas, less quality on the ice, way less economy... Some teams do belong there with SHL too big of a stage for them. Others don't with Allsvenskan too small of a stage. Like Djurgården right now is a 2nd division team on the performance side with a 1st division organization being held back by the circumstances.

    0. You probably got a Cider, swedish pronounciation is siideer so easy to mishear for beer.
    1. #29 in Skellefteå Dilan Sikura is also a Canadian.
    2. AIK is just an abbreviation of "allmän idrottsklubb" = General sportclub. So its like if a hockeyteam adds HC to the for hockey club or soccer teams using FC for football club. The club that only calls themselves AIK is from Solna, Stockholm and was the(?) first club in sweden to use that abbreviation andsome stuckup fans from their side get pissed when others useit so ofc we do just to tease them!
    3. Ref helmetcam is correctly used for the broadcast.
    4. The reason most arenas have an area between the ice and the bleachers is that they are multi-arenas used for more than hockey (I know thats the case for many NHL arenas too but since these arenas are smaller they need cheaper solutions).
    5. SHL is arguably the second best hockey-league in the world (overall quality of players).

AIK just means "Allmänna IdrottsKlubb" = public sport(ing) club, these were very common before and was just for the public to exercise and enjoy themselves. Usually they organized many different sports like skiing, football, hockey, running and more under the same roof for recreational purposes. This is also why you have both hockey teams and football teams called "Djurgården" (just means animal park) and "AIK" in Stockholm, they both originated from clubs where there were many different sports. It's also why you have a Skellefteå AIK in Skellefteå, it's just another public sport club (has nothing to do with AIK from Stockholm).

The Frölunda team, in the late 60’s, was said to be playing “Wild West” hockey. It was less ruled by tactics and more by innovation and talent. Nobody knew what they would do next. So, in the mid 90’s they adopted the name Indians, as a homage to the old type of playing. However, in the early 20’s, it was considered to be politically incorrect and the name was changed to Frölunda HC (Hockey Club). However, not all fans opted for a new jersey and the old “Indian” can still be seen on a lot of the jerseys. 🏒👍
