Crouses is my local store, I used to work there in high school, great family that owns it. I've used that excuse when I bought seeds for the garden this spring, got onions potatoes and a new virginian caboose lol 7:04
Hey, Dave, great video! I am catching up on all of the Trainapalooza videos and did not want to miss yours. It was great getting to see and spend time with you throughout the course of the two days. I enjoyed your introduction to the event. Those were two interesting stores you stopped at and I appreciate your sharing your experiences with us. Bill B.
Glad you got to take the time to go up to Michigan. That's were my son and x wife live. I use to drive up there every Friday night to see my son on the weekends. I lived there for a few years and worked for Bassors trains in Saginaw on Cort st.
@@dagryffynhobby Whenever I was in the Altoona area, I would make it a point to stop there. My friends no longer live there so I have to do a road trip!
Thanks for this intro to your Train-A-Palooza 2024 experience, Dave. You found some train stores in unexpected venues, especially the one in the hardware store. All of them had a very nice selection of models for selection. I hope this next day was equally a rewarding.
Back in the Post-War era it wasn't unusual for hardware stores to carry trains when Christmas was coming, auto parts stores too. Some found the trains brought in additional welcome revenue all year. Those doing so now are just carrying on the tradition.
Now THAT'S a place I've wanted to go to for years but probably never will. Just a little too far away to justify the journey. BUT if I'm ever in that part of the country you bet I'll stop in!
Looks like you had so much fun at those train shops! The second store in the vid ive been there before many times. Pretty cool store btw that store is also called course mills. Thought I would tell you that.
Well THIS was a surprise I didn't expect! Where to start? The Valley Farm Market looks like living proof of the old saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover!" Who'd have thought such an unremarkable-looking place would have so many goodies inside? And that placement of the trains beginning at the end of the toiletries section is a bit of marketing genius! Maybe if Walgreens tried that they wouldn't be in the trouble they're in? 🤣 "Hmmm, as long as I'm here pickin' up some Skin Bracer maybe I should get another boxcar for the layout?" North Lima Hardware's carrying on the old tradition of hardware stores carrying trains, it was pretty common in the Post-War days and I remember Walker's Hardware in Totowa NJ carrying O Gauge trains. In fact I remember a hardware store carrying trains at Christmas time when I was six years old. And North Lima's prices look very reasonable as well. Anyway, drive safe Dave! And enjoy the trip! (Personally I'd have driven too. Flying's no fun anymore and fo a variety of reasons.)
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah when I pulled up to Valley Farm, I stopped and checked the map, the address, looked around cautiously, then saw the sign that said model trains. You could really drive by and have no idea. I’d say one of the most unique hobby stores I’ve been to.
Lots of boxes I didn’t see an engine under $300. Retail train pricing new or used puts it out of budget. I recall as a kid hardware type stores selling bikes, Lionel trains, models, pedal cars as well as the typical push lawn mowers and tools. A store my dad as well as myself liked to go to. Noah’s’ s Ark, Mort Weinberg, and Western Auto are names I seem to recall. I can’t say we ever stop as traveling to shop.😊
Yeah new retail is a bit much for me. I much prefer the used found at a train show pricing. I miss stores that had a cool selection of things like that.
At the second place you stopped, the note they had up about the prices of HO and N scale items hit hard. While I’ve never been much into either scale, I’ve noticed the trend in pricing that I completely agree with the owners about. Things that not long ago were affordable are now double or triple now and they are pricing themselves out of buyers. I won’t even start with O gauge but it’s even hitting the smaller scales on even the cheap items.
Yeah it’s disheartening. The cost is what kept me away for so long. That’s also why I started with old used trains, so much of a better value. I just can’t see shelling out all that cash for new stuff.
Hey Dave. Go to the center of the menards store and go upstairs. Trains are on the back wall. Next ro the Christmas stuff. Go ahead ask me how I know. 😂
Those are some really unique stores. Good luck on your quest. I hope you find some great opportunities. The best time to check out a Menards for train items is in the fall through the winter. Trains for them is a seasonal item and they put out new inventory in early fall, I believe some time in October. Both of my local Menards stores keep their seasonal items up front just behind the registers when in season. Otherwise the picked over stock from the year before is upstairs in the mezzanine. This isn't really a good time of year to be checking out their train items. They consider it a seasonal item and put the new stock out along with last years leftover stock from the mezzanine on the main floor isle along with their Christmas decorations in fall. You really won't get a good representation of their train items this time of year. Plan a trip in early fall when they first put out the seasonal Christmas items and fresh stock that came out this year. They only stock a small portion of everything they make as shown in their online offerings. They usually have a pretty good selection of mostly O-gauge items of what they do stock.
That’s what I hear. I only stopped in because I have no idea when I’ll ever be near another Menards. I’ll have to watch someone else’s video on the Holliday selection there.
Very nice! You sure took a circuitous route on your way to the Detroit area. Those shops are pretty cool, for sure. There isn't much left here in Toledo, just a couple places that carry some Lionel and a few other 3-rail offerings. There are two Menard's in the Toledo area on your way back east. One just off of I75 at the Alexis Road exit and one in Oregon, just off of I280 on your way to the Turnpike. They may be more convenient than making an out-of-the-way trip to one in the Detroit area. This time of year, all of the train merch is upstairs. Either way, enjoy the fun at Train-A-Palooza. An excellent video, as always.
I enjoyed the video, but it would've been better to see what was in the boxes! Sure, I could read what was on the label. But seeing is enjoying n touching is proof! 😊

👍Cool hobby shop tour! 🚂
Thanks!
Have a great time Dave
Thanks!
Fun stuff!
😃
It’s neat they have a real Pennsy N8 caboose there. That’s one big caboose!
It is. It was a nice surprise to see that when I pulled up.

Thanks for watching!
Very nice. When the video started, I was like Dave looks and sounds tired, but I knew why. I hope you have a great time!
Oh I was tired. Just the drive out was a lot!
Happy to see you Happy.

Man! Had to smile at Valley Farm. “Where’s the Listerine? On the other side of the train section!”
Over there between the freight cars and the scenery supplies lol
Good trip.
It was!
Glad to see you stopped at Weedville. I always stop there when I am in the area.
A very cool store, will definitely be back

Hopefully you can detour ro Wheeling WV on your way home to stop at Patrick's Trains
I had wanted to, I spent a couple years at WVU and a trip through the region would have been great. Maybe next time.
@@dagryffynhobby your wallet might not want u to stop with all the o Guage trains, diecast vehicles etc
There is an auction between Thurmont and Fredneck this Sat Aug 3 with several postwar/mpc trains and 2 zw trans
Just got my first Menards track and it run good with my postwar trains ❤
Nice. It’s worked well for me
I would definitely stop at weedvile that a old school hardware store 👍😎
Cool places indeed
Cool video!
Thanks!
Don't know the hours, but the Detroit Model Railroad club in Holly, Michigan is great to visit. Two-rail scale O-gauge in a converted theatre.
2 rail o scale in an old theater sounds amazing! I’ll have to add that to my next trip out that way.
great video ! have tons of fun !
Thanks so much
Love the Video, you never know what you will find! Have fun

It was a great, and exhausting, weekend!
Nice work, Dave! My wallet now hates you as I look this place up to snag a few items I saw in this video 😁
Hahaha, as long as it’s just your wallet that’s unhappy. It’s unfortunate, but a part of life I guess.
