Over a hundred years ago, a place to take care of Orphan Boys was founded by a Catholic Priest. His name was Father Flanagan, and the place is called "Boys Town". The story goes that Flanagan saw two boys coming up toward the place and the older brother was carrying his crippled little brother on his shoulders. When Flanagan remarked about how heavy the boy must be to carry, the older brother replied, "He ain't heavy, he's my brother!" This became the organization's motto.
😩
Just thought I was coming to say… Father, Flanagan, and Boys Town. 😢
Absolute classic, one of the best, most meaningful songs ever recorded. And Allan Clarke, my lord what a powerful performance, then add in the exploding harmonies. It's a religious experience. Beautiful reaction to a beauteous song, my brother.
Allan Clarke
Edited. Thanks man!
To you it might be the most, but to another it might just mean a lot
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Loved the Hollies since I was a young teen. Waited for each release with excitement. Each one went straight up the charts. This one was a favourite and meant so much to me. Saw them several times and sooooo good.❤️
Oh wow- I’m crying. Even though I was a teen during the Viet Nam War I lost friends there. My brother came back with PTSD and has never been the same. He’s almost 80 and me almost 70 and I still have to carry him often.
This and so many more like it is why we are bragging about our generation of music ( 60’s & 70’s )!
A hymn for humanity, sung by a wonderful group. I’ve cried to this for decades.
Every time I listen to it 😢
Powerful message in a beautiful song.
This old world sure could use a few more songs like this ❤
At Boys Town orphanage around 1918 there was a young boy named Howard Loomis who had polio and wore leg braces. The older boys started regularly carrying him up the stairs. One day Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger who was carrying Howard if he was heavy. Reuben’s reply, ‘ he ain’t heavy father he’s my brother’! There is a statue depicting it to this day at Boys Town in Nebraska.
This is the greatest song of all time, magnificent job by Allan Clarke and the Hollies. The story of one man’s love for his brother. “No burden is he to bare..we’ll get there.”
Iconic song which stands the test of time.
1960s man. We thought we could change the world. 😢
And we're still trying 😢
Man we had good music back in the 60ies 70ies and 80ies real music !
The Air That I Breathe
When my younger brother died a few years ago I had this song playing at his funeral. It was so appropriate, he couldn't hurt a sole. I've got tears 😢 in my eyes thinking about him.
My teenage years were blessed with these songs and fantastic groups. I was born in Manchester and the pop scene was fantastic.
I can vouch for that I'm Manchester born and bred, I was a regular at the Oasis club and Manchester Cavern on Cromford Court and occasionally the Jungfrau, great times.
This is a fantastic song, but it makes me cry every time I hear it.
O'm so glad you listened to this song. So beautiful. I knew you'd love it.
You know what? Your reactions are the most consistently insightful, thought-provoking, inquisitive and empathetic of any of the other RUclips reactors I regularly watch.
Love this dude…No interruptions and trusts us to listen to his insightful reactions….he’s A+
@@sst3d Perfectly said!
Totally agree! I watch any, and all, of the reactions by him that come up. Seems like just a nice down to earth guy with a good head on his shoulders and a kind heart. Thank you JMBOY!!
Listen carefully and you will hear an electric piano playing along with the bass line. They needed someone to play this part, and the recording studio's messenger boy who played in back up bands for American soul artists in England, came in to do the honors. His name was Reg Dwight, who a year later would change his name to Elton John, and seven years later would be the biggest selling male artist on earth.
Just imagine the scene..."Reg, stick around a bit longer, please. We need you to lay down a good piano bit for this song. Thanks!"
Did not know that. Thanks.
Like Glen Campbell's input with the Beach Boys.. I love those stories..
And he was paid the princely sum of £12 for his piano contribution. He'd charge a bit more today methinks!
Great vocal, wonderful orchestration, and Who Else Loves that Great Drumming? It's fun to watch this drummer!
No auto tune just talent what you see and hear is what you got
It's hard to hold back tears whenever I hear this song. Was very poignant during this Vietnam war was era, as it could be interpreted many ways.
We thought we could change the world, we thought it was the age of Aquarius coming in, we were just teenagers watching our brothers and male cousins all in Viet Nam all we young teens coming of age and watching horrible images coming from the jungles. We were in a time when the war was brought to us every night in our living room, not like WWIi where you might see a newsreel on WWIi in a theater. The rose colored glasses were ripped we were no longer children
The Hollies, from Manchester UK named after Buddy Holly, like The Beatles who varied from Holly's band The Crickets. They were intro'd to The Rock Hall in 2010, after waiting, yet quite worthy. Garam Nash, later of Crosby, Still, and Nash, was original member, had departed from this ban by this point. I read in biography, that Graham and singer Alan Clarke went to see The Everly Brothers, on a tour of Britain -the two young musicians got invited to after concert coffee, by the Everly Brothers, as fans, and got to talk about music. Graham said that set a positive example to meet your fans, and talk between.
The Hollies' biggest hit single and album, and #1 on Billboard's end-of-year Hot 100 singles chart. Excellent choice and reaction for their most moving ballad.
Yes, brother! You got the point perfectly! 💋💋💋💋🎉🎉🌵👵🐺🖖🌵😎
Elton is playing piano on the backing track... he did a lot of studio work when he was still Reg Dwight !
1969. I was a whole 14 years old!
This song came out the next year after 1967's "The Summer of Love", and was I like to think there are still people that feel that way.
When you get on the long end of life, friends are the best thing ever.
This song is timeless…💚
You mentioned Eric Burdon, this singer Alan Clarke was also back there in the British Invasion in 1964 with Eric's Animals, the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Zombies, Dave Clark Five, Moody Blues, etc. It was a musical explosion...
and this is why I loved the '60s and '70s music......
We are all each other's keeper. There's just no other way to live.
Beautiful reaction, JMBOY.
My favorite song by The Hollies, brings tears every time I hear it. Your reaction is great, you found the meaning 💔❤️🩹☮️ Thanks for your kind words.
You’re one of the very few reactors who actually gets the meaning of this song.🙂👍🏻
This is so very awesome. This is an iconic song sung by an iconic band. Love your reaction!
I live in Nebraska and drive passed Boys Town in Omaha from time to time. its still there and doing some good work with young people. There you will find a statue of the boy carrying is brother to Boys town.
A true classic and a saying that was reintroduced in this song and is still used this many decades later in the common vernacular.
Care about others in this world and if you can choose to be anything, choose to be kind.
Thanks for sharing.
For me the coolest thing about The Hollies is they could sound like a totally different band from one song to the next. You've done Long Cool Woman & this song , now do Bus Stop & The Air That I Breathe and you'll hear what i'm saying.
british brilliance.the great allan clarke
It's called brotherly love.
This is my first time to your channel and I enjoyed your reaction a lot. What I really really enjoyed is how much effort you put into your playlist. Oh my goodness I can't wait till you build some of those out. But I really appreciate the variety and the fact that you put effort into creating the playlist for people. Not a lot of reactors do that. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing
Great reaction….. well done !
If we all did this, this world would be a better place ❤️
Graham Nash was a co-founder of The Hollies
When a brother carries a burden or challenge for another brother without expecting something in return is beautiful. When a brother's unconditional love for his sibling is manifested one can understand what Jesus taught about having this kind of love not just for a brother in the faith but for mankind in general, Carrying someone else's trials is the ultimate achievement of good men.
Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s this song was a song that opened hearts and minds during the terrible struggles for equality by minorities in the USA.
The military tribute with this song is really something to see and hear, it will bring tears to your eyes.
I’m going to check out the military tribute-haven’t seen it. I’m sure it’s going to be emotional!
@@Vicky49610 You definitely should, Vicky, it may be a Vietnam tribute but you should be able to pull it up under military.
Suzanne-I found it and it was emotional. Thank you for the suggestion to watch it. I’m so grateful to all those that serve.
@@Vicky49610 Great!! You're very welcome, I get choked up everytime I watch it. My husband was a marine and served in vietnan, I just lost him in December of 2023, but I'm also very grateful. My son served in the army, as well.
@@suzanneprock7286 I thank your husband & son for their service. My husband was in the Army & was also in Vietnam. He passed away in January of 2008. You are in a place where I was with losing your husband & I just want to tell you that you will get through this. I love that you are saying you are grateful-what a wonderful way to think. Sending you all the best as you go through this new chapter of your life. Take care of you.
This is certainly an oldie but well remembered!!!!!! FAB!!!
It's simply a song about caring for one another
Every Radio Station around the world should this play one ime each Day.
Beautiful song ❤
When I hear this song I think of the nightly news during the war in Vietnam, showing young and war weary soldiers carrying their wounded comrades in arms. In war, they were all brothers, and they didn’t feel the weight.
This song was awarded the greatest song of all songs in the world about 15 years ago. I can see why. About love.
Great appreciation of a classic from before you were born. Respect brother!
When this came out, Vietnam was raging, and there was the usual arab , Israel war. So it touched many people, and had real personal meaning for many.
I love the Hollies and this beautiful song ! I have a DVD of all their songs performed. Another artist who sings a number of songs with messages for the greater good for humanity is Australian GOAT John Farnham. He is brilliant, having a clear and powerful gymnastic voice with a big vocal range. John's soul shines out when he sings. Always watch and hear him LIVE in concert. Start off with his cover of Stevie Wonder's, 'Love's In Need'.
Wonderful evaluation! As am :older person: O actually proud of the music zo grew up with. We were different then. Feel it slipping away. Makes me sad..
Just coming on to say the same thing. When was the last time you heard a contemporary song about humanity and love of fellow human? I remember this song (was a teen) - but hearing it today just brought tears to my eyes.
There is some good music it’s just not so easy to find. The radio was great. Today you have to surf around to find good meaningful music.
An interesting story that goes (with this song) is the was a fire at an orphanage for boys in a rural area. This place caught fire, some were killed others horibly burnt and some just made it out. As authorities arrived and checked surrounding areas, they came upon a young boy bout 10 with a younger boy on his back about 3 or 4 years of age about a mile away from the fire. When a man said to the 10 year old, you're a long way off and that's quite a load you've carried. The 10 year old said " He ain't heavy, he's my brother. I'm 71 and my prime years have passed but this is a story I've heard since back in the day. "Hedlok"
This is such a beautiful song and the message is that we are missing out when we act selflessly and don’t share.
This is such a beautiful song!!! I bought the album in the 70's just for this song....So glad you reacted to it..
Such a beautiful song. And I always love seeing later generations appreciating songs from this era.
We had the best music the bestbgroups the best songwriting in the 60s and 70s mybera so lucky
Great Choice... I was one of those guys suggesting this extremely well loved song. Played at so may occasions since it came out. Many other artist have done this song... Johnny Mathis did my favorite version vocally, and that is hard to do because this is done so well.
I loved this group !!!! ""The inspiration for the song came from a painting that was on display at an orphanage in Scotland. The painting featured a young boy carrying his disabled brother on his back. The quote “He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother” was written underneath the painting, which provided the idea for the lyrics of the song."
Love the Holliès version. Thanks for playing it.
The Hollies ha😊ve an interesting background.
Have you heard Bobby Hatfield singing My Prayer or Somewhere or He? Great
That's great info. Never knew that.
Love thy neighbor as thyself.
True lovers of their brothers. Awesome song JM
We did music fashion inventions changed the law re gay rights equal rights for woman loved the sixties. 82 year young thats me
Excellent comments!!!!!
Beautiful song, beautiful voice.
We played this piece at my brother's funeral. It's been 15 years and it still brings me to tears.
I miss you Kent ♥️
thanks for sharing this lovely fellow - the sixties were the decade I grew up in and the music reflected both the hope, joy and the meanness of humanity. This piece was one of hope and I am grateful for being reminded of it
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. If you haven’t done so, you should checkout The Air That I Breath and Bus Stop by the Hollies. They gave us some great music!
Sooooo gooooood ☘️🇺🇲
One of my favourites for all the reasons you cite... and your smiling eyes just show how sincere you are about your likes. So pleased you liked it. x
A great vocalist and even greater song! The Hollies as a band were quite amazing!
*Their hit "The Air That I Breathe" is incredible!*
Beautiful Song! 😍😍😍😍
Great breakdown Brother ,great song 🌞Canned Heat... Fried Hockey Boogie or Human Condition live in Holland 1970 🦉
Brilliant Band 👍👍
I bought this album in late 80s. It was a cassette and on the inner sleeve there was a quote that said, it's a good thing this was released at that time because if it was released today it would be let my brother helped himself I'm too busy
the harmonies on the song cut me wide open... so beautiful
Amazing message in this song❤🎉
Great choice great reaction!
What a lovely man. I too loved his reaction. Let’s hope some billionaires are watching .
We played the s at my brother's funeral,we lost him 3years ago to suicide at 38...RIP Corey my baby brother 🙏Love You and till we meet again🙏❤️
Agree about the Hollies reminding us of the Animals. Both amazing bands and song writers.
Great Great song by a great band.
thanks for sharing :)
Quality.
Some really good points. In-depth. Thoughtful. Well balanced. I was a senior in high school when this song was doing its thing. This and Abraham, Martin and John by Dion. Whoa. Pulling the meaningful and emotional heart strings.
I love Dion's version❤
Amazing understanding!!!!
Gasoline Alley Bred is a fabulous Hollies song. Recommend.
AGREED. Just care.
Thank you for using the Biblical reference! Amazing how many events from that Book we can learn from. Loved your reaction, thank you!
You have the best smile ever
I had forgotten how great this song is!
This song never gets old!👍👏👏💜
A beautiful & haunting track that pulls on your heart strings & leaves a tear in your eye😢
That is a deeply spiritual song about the brotherhood of humankind.
Absolutely!
Fantastic track, great lead vocal, orchestration and harmonies. Bobby Eliott was one of the top drummers performing in the sixties, you really need to get into their early tracks like We're Through, Stay, I Can't Let Go, Listen To Me to aprreciate Bobby's input. The Hollies were rarely out of the charts in the sixties and had an unmistakeable sound with Alan Clarke's lead and the exquisite harmonies. Good to see a new audience appreciating this great band. Some of their stuff is 60 years old now and still sounds fresh today, great reaction JM.
Great reaction! It hits home for me because for some unknown reason a few years ago my brother dedicated this song to me on his facebook page. Perhaps it's because I'm the eldest child and he felt that I was always there for him? In reality it was, and is, a two-way street... just a couple of "kids" still going strong now in our 60s.
If this song doesn’t move you in some sort of way then you’re really not human.
Like ol Howard Goodman used to say "If this don't light your fire, your wood is wet !"
❤❤❤❤❤ Love it !
I went to see them on the final tour at the royal albert hall London. Boy we had some talented people around when i was a teen
