I only do dumbbell bench press. I wish he mentioned that it is harder to compensate with your dominant arm with dumbbells compared to dumbbells because the weight on each side is not connected. It promotes better form. You can also go at a slightly higher weight without a spot if you workout alone because if you go to failure you can easily drop dumbbells to your sides safely while a barbell would fall directly on you.
I sold my barbell and weights to make room. Now I have a couple of those 10-90 adjustable dumbbells (can't drop these), and some pairs of 100, 110 & 120s... Was benching over 335 on bar, but just getting 120s into position is completely ridiculous.
I do both, alternating weeks, and I like dumbbells better for the safety issue, or not needing a spotter. I feel like I can do more reps not having to worry about getting stuck, or hurt if I'm on my own (or asking a stranger for a spot).
Not if you're the one sitting on your ass watching videos, because no one ever built muscle by just watching videos, unless you're watching videos while recovering after a workout session.

Michael Newton Yeah the dumbbells at my gym only go up to 40kg so I’ve had to switch over to the barbell. It’s a Shame because dumbbells feel so much better but they eventually got to easy 🙁

Same here. My left rotator cuff has been messed up for about 3 years and dumbbells give me an easier time. I quit barbell since it destroyed my shoulder.
Dumbbells are great. They build additional stability. The barbell has much more stability on its own so you'll be missing out while using it. However, for some very heavy lifts or generally unstable lifts you should use a barbell for safety and confidence in your lift.

I've been using dumbbells for bench for the past year, mainly because that's what's been available, but I've seen better results from the DBs than I ever had with the bar. One thing I've like with the DBs is that when I start fatiguing on a set of strick bench press, I can bring my elbows into my chest and throw up a few more reps and hit my triceps a bit.

One great benefit with dumbbells for me is that you can work on your imbalances. I have bigger left arm (tricep), so when bench-pressing with barbell my right arm can be lacking if I am not 100% focused. With Dumbbells, you always work them separately + you need a lot more focus.
Excellent video. And the guy seems so friendly and honest. I’m 44, work out regularly at home. Only with dumbbells. And I love it. After watching this, I had some of my own thoughts confirmed and also learned a few very useful tips to improve my workouts. Thanks for the help!
When it comes to Chest I have found switching to Dumbells has been more beneficial from a shoulder perspective. I have less shoulder stress and potential injury (I haven't injured my shoulder like I used to do with the barbell). I disagree at the moment, I've put on more size with barbell bench. You can go way heavier if you program correctly, which is bound to put on more size.
@@aarongonzalez4458 dumbells are still good for pressing, but after I do 5 sets of barbell I move to machines so I can still go heavy ish after benching while lowering the chance of injury that comes with going heavy on dumbells due to all the stabilization required.
Ricky Chiz Bizkit for some reason I’ve put on more size with dumbbells than I ever had with barbells probably cause I’m not scared to go heavier without a spotter
the reason why dumbells are feel harder to lift than barbells even when they are the same weight is because with dumbells you need to introduce alot more control when lifting them up whereas with barbells it is a much more robotic and simple movement. for instance when you lift up a barbell in a bench press you simply use your two arms to push up a weight and bring it back down, in a dumbell bench press you grab one in each hand and then have to control them as you move them upwards and downwards making it more difficult.

The real answer is. Whatever feels good for you and works for your body. DB feels better for me on some lifts. BB feels better for me on some lifts. Do what's best for you and stay consistent!
Will Cummings III very true, but you don’t necessarily have to stay consistent in the sense that you can’t switch between them. Mixing it up by switching between BB and DB may benefit you. But like you said, do what feels best.
Because of arthritis and shoulder issues (I'm 64), I can no longer do barbell bench press without pain, but I can press dumbbells because I can rotate the grip to a more neutral position, and it makes all the difference. Dumbbell deadlift works better with dumbbells on sides instead of front. No need to hold them in front, because there’s no barbell to limit your movement.
Man, what a turkey I feel like. Had a knee injury 5 years ago and slowly built up my leg strength again over 3 years doing barbell squats. But hit a plateau because I only have a home gym and couldn't safely get the bar above my shoulders to squat. Didn't even think about using Dumbells. Would activate all sorts of other stabilizer muscles to strengthen the knees and legs in other ways. Thanks Buff Dudes!!!
@@doitformazi2347 yea I agree they're not easier I worded that statement poorly. I meant they are easier to feel and look strong when doing say, incline or flat db bench. For the average gym goer, 80-90lb dumbells make you look quite strong, but that same person may only bench 175-185 with the barbell for the same working sets (not impressive). That was the scenario I was in years ago, feeling strong with dumbells but weak with a barbell (I was using 90-100lb dumbells but barely hitting 225 with a barbell). Also, please explain to why barbell is better suited for the lower body. What about bench, ohp, and rows?
Ricky Chiz Bizkit I just have seen a lot more results using dumbbells over barbells for chest press and overhead press. Barbell Rows, I agree, they are pretty good, I don’t usually do dumbbell rows, but either works for that. And I just feel like squatting with a barbell is much more convenient than lugging two barbells up on your shoulders and squatting. I feel ya tho dude. I just think dumbbells make you stronger in the upper body. You can reach your full potential without ever needing a spotter
I switch between dumbell and barbell for 6 months. And ive noticed that youll feel easy whatever youre doing for longer than 1.5 months. Also ive noticed that dumbell made my chest develope more muscles and making it more buff while barbell made/shaped my chest and also worked alot on my lats. I suggest switching between barbell and dumbell for 6 months (i.e. half year barbell half year dumbell).
Awesome video! It seems like both have their benifits because the dumbells probably work out stabilizer muscles more. But you could make a home gym with a squat rack and dumbell set :)
I like dumbells for bench press because I can just just drop the weights if I cant get the last rep. Barbell I would struggle and I dont have a spotter.
I've gotta say man, many lifters out there with great physiques, lack traps big time. It's like the one area many lifters don't build. Yours on the other hand, are impressive.
Little confession: I'm afraid of barbells. I fucked up my back when I started lifting when I was using a barbell. It's been all dumbbells and calisthenics for me.
Dumbells. Individual accountability PLUS the way the dumbells have more freedom makes it closer to a natural workout. I experimented with both and found that dumbells were more difficult but they also built better functional and better looking muscle.

But hit a plateau because I only have a home gym and couldn't safely get the bar above my shoulders to squat. Didn't even think about using Dumbells. Would activate all sorts of other stabilizer muscles to strengthen the knees and legs in other ways.
Thanks Buff Dudes!!!
Barbell for compound
Dumbbell for isolation/accessories
This is great. Anyone else hear the added gym atmosphere sounds 🤣
Barbell for life!
Squat,bench,deadlift,OHP, rows!
Agreed. People want to say dumbells are better because they are easier lol..
Ricky Chiz Bizkit they aren’t easier though... that’s why you can’t lift as much weight. However barbells are way better for lower body.
I like how hes going heavy in all the examples for the dumbbells.
Do barbell curls destroy anyone else’s wrists?
I switch between dumbell and barbell for 6 months. And ive noticed that youll feel easy whatever youre doing for longer than 1.5 months. Also ive noticed that dumbell made my chest develope more muscles and making it more buff while barbell made/shaped my chest and also worked alot on my lats. I suggest switching between barbell and dumbell for 6 months (i.e. half year barbell half year dumbell).
Great video but I don't think it really answered the question that was asked. I would have liked to see stats on how much muscle each program netted.
Adam Guzman i was looking for a comment like this. he talked more about stability, comfort, and movements instead of muscle building
Why no one arm variations? You can lift more weight per arm/side with one arm dumbbell movements ( OH press, rows)
Awesome video! It seems like both have their benifits because the dumbells probably work out stabilizer muscles more. But you could make a home gym with a squat rack and dumbell set :)
I like dumbbells because you work each side separately therefore preventing and fixing imbalances.
Aside from squats and deadlifts, dumbbells>barbells imo
Came here favouring barbells, leaving favouring dumbbells!!
I like dumbells for bench press because I can just just drop the weights if I cant get the last rep. Barbell I would struggle and I dont have a spotter.

Dumbbells are my go to. Really helps my form, stabilizers, and range of motion.
Haver to be buff to protect Eleven from those demogorgon!!! Lets go Hopper
I've gotta say man, many lifters out there with great physiques, lack traps big time. It's like the one area many lifters don't build. Yours on the other hand, are impressive.
Dumbbells work more muscles especially stability muscles 💪 that’s just facts if you want an effective workout dumbbell for the win
an effective workout uses both plus machines. never stick to just one thing.EVER
im going with
1. deadlift - barbell
2. squat - barbell
3. bench press - dumbbell
4. bent over rows - dumbbell
5. overhead press - barbell
Little confession: I'm afraid of barbells.
I fucked up my back when I started lifting when I was using a barbell. It's been all dumbbells and calisthenics for me.
Dumbbells and Barbells are like my kids. I don’t have a favorite. 🤣 love it!
omg that repeating sound is so distracting.
Dumbells. Individual accountability PLUS the way the dumbells have more freedom makes it closer to a natural workout. I experimented with both and found that dumbells were more difficult but they also built better functional and better looking muscle.
Dumbbells will make sure each arm gets an equal work load
Love you retro comedic duo with your dad!
