#28: FINALLY A Rock Inscription proves Mecca was "BUILT" late!

- We've always said that in order to know what really happened historically with Islam, just return to the 7th century and find the artifacts from that time period and read what they say.
Well, here we have a prime example of just that...a rock inscription, chiselled by hand on a rock sometime between 697AD - 698AD, and situated north east of Taif, which is around 50-60 miles from Mecca itself.
How do we know its date... it says so on the inscription (i.e. 78 years from the year of the Hijra = 622 AD).
But it's what it claims in the inscription which is proving to be most problematic for Muslims, because it notes that the "Masjid al Haram" was built 78 years from the Hijra, and everyone knows that this would be the Ka'aba itself, the stone building which everyone prays to, yet supposedly was built by Abraham and Ishmael (in 1900 BC), and which was visited often by Muhammad before he supposedly died in 632 AD.
Yet, it says clearly on this rock that this building was not "BUILT" until 698 AD, confronting everything we have been told concerning when the Ka'aba was built.
The Islamic Awareness web site features this rock inscription on its site, and due to this embarrassing fact has changed the translation of the Arabic word "Buniya" (was built) to "Ueida Binawuha" (was rebuilt), suggesting that the caliph Abd al-Malik needed to renovate the structure, which he did in 695 AD, and then finished it in 698 AD, thus the reference to it in this inscription.
But that is not what the inscription says. It clearly writes the word "BUILT", not "REBUILT", which confronts the Standard Islamic Narrative completely, yet fits perfectly with what we are now finding from many pieces of evidence on the ground.
Ibn Zubayr, the governor of Petra, under Abd al-Malik, rebelled against abd al-Malik around 687 AD, destroyed the Petran Ka'aba, stole the black stone and sent it south (possibly to Mecca) with the women and children, while he remained in Petra where he and his son were killed by Al Hajjaj in 692 AD.
Because the black stone was in the south, the pilgrims followed it believing that where the black stone was, so was God's presence.
A building was needed to house the stone, so the Masjid al-Haram (i.e. the Ka'aba) was built between 697-698AD, which is commemorated by this inscription, giving us the correct date of its construction.
No wonder the Islamic Awareness web site mistranslated their explanation on this inscription, as it confronts their narrative of when Mecca was built. Unfortunately for them, rocks don't lie, and if we refuse to call out what really happened, then the rocks will cry out for us...because they never lie!

We still all have to live and work together regardless of our beliefs so there is room for all kinds of different ways of living. I have responsibilities and try to stay on the right side of legality. My reckless days of drunken stupors are long gone and that sure helps. It’s a big universe out here and we have much to learn about it but there is also the mundane non miraculous things that show me the place is not as cut and dried as heaven and hell dichotomy thinking .As much as religion tries to be nuanced it’s way more nuanced than that!

Strange that this message was never heard by me on catholic churches or retreat seminars. You can see the location change by the orientation of different Mosques built at different times. The early Mosques align to one location, then a few in between, then the rest to Mecca. The times you put in, also match the change in Mosque orientations.

As a Muslim, we understand that Masjid Al Haram is an area around Kabaa not the stone structure. Also, Mecca is the wider area ( small town), and Becca is a narrower area around Kabaa. Also we understand that the current Masjid architecture is not the same as architecture during prophet time, Masjid was a square structure with one wall oriented toward Qibla (direction of Masjis Al Haram)... so I do not get your discovery here.

Yūsuf during his siege (and eventual death) of ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr (d. 73 AH / 692 CE). And It is also written that ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān started the reconstruction of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām in the year 75. The historical records seem to indicate that the reconstruction during ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān it started around the year 75 AH and reaching completion around 78 AH or 80 AH.
So, when you compare the fact that the inscription mentioned building al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to the historical record which mentioned the destruction of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām in the year 73 AH and it is rebuilding in 75AH you can conclude on that the inscription writer meant that the al-Masjid al-Ḥarām was rebuild in 78 and not built. This rock inscription in just one proof of the accuracy of the Islamic records.The word built and rebuilt in ancient Arabic speech are used interchangeably to mean both built or rebuilt

Jay, can we know from Dan Gibson's data (and any error corrections) when Mecca as sited in the Hijaz was first pointed to by qibla ? As in then would be a base for when the idea started to take hold that Islam or the prophet began there. It could be of course that there was a rough plain teacher there, with some charm, but he couldn't have produced the whole Quran, because of all the details that imply northern knowledge and basing, it would be minimal. Or it could be people wanting to find a prophet via the text, but the lack of information in the text causing all sorts of speculations, and a site somewhere in the largely un-peopled areas of Arabia Deserta being more plausible, as populated locations would challenge any invented belief. If a black stone of some superstitious importance got moved there, then that could help popularise such a location.

As a trained archaeologist I would question the age of this petroglyph. It looks more recent than indicated, but a local professional, who has compared nearby inscriptions on similar surfaces would be able to comment more effectively. (Also what does the earlier inscription say?) This is important because people with an agenda can write such a message on a rock, even millennia/centuries ago, to make a point and discredit a contending position/opinion. So, messages on rocks can convey lies. This is why evidence needs to be placed in the context of other lines of evidence. The built/rebuilt argument is compelling but not definitive, in part, because built can convey several meanings, including rebuilt or that one part of it was built, while another was long standing in that location, or even built anew after some sort of destruction.

The angle at which the photograph is taken makes it difficult to discern. Regardless of how precise a language is, people think they are saying/writing something that is obvious to them in a specific context, but it may be read to mean something different by another. What was being built, for example. Being built does not mean that a vestige or beginning of something else did not precede it. Documentary evidence is rarely as obvious as people take it to be.

Then it comes to Valid who is referred to in the video who went more than just a wall, added 1725 square meters of land and built large columns and sitting places with decorations which had partly gold in it and thus turned it into a more traditional Masjid structure
Next upgrade is in the year 137 AH that Mansour doubled the size

AH counts lunar years. AD counts solar years. Lunar years are shorter than solar years by about 10-15 days
An Islamic year is equal to 10,631 days every 30 'years' on average = 354.3666... days per year = 29.530555... days per month, on average.
Multiply 354.3666... by 78 to get 27,640.6 days.
Divide by 365.25 days per Julian Calendar year to get 75.67583847 years (Julian Calendar). Add that to AD 622 to get AD 397.676 or so.
