- Are you a fan of fishing prespawn bass in rivers? If so, Seth Feider shares a bunch of location and lure selection tips that are sure to help you out this spring. To start, Feider emphasizes the need to find the warmest water -- this usually requires heading to the backs of shallow pockets. As he states, "if you ain't kicking mud with your trolling motor, you ain't shallow enough.

Extreme shallows aren't the ideal place for flipping and pitching around, so Feider uses a combination of moving baits that provide a blend of lift and slow retrieve speeds. Keep in mind that this calendar period is usually too early for topwaters, and the bass aren't eager to chase baits yet. Slow and off the bottom is the ticket, and these are the baits to get it done.
FEIDER'S TOP BAIT PICKS
1. Spinnerbait. A light 3/8-ounce spinnerbait with decent-sized blades provides the ideal blend of lift while supporting a slow retrieve speed. Feider targets cover such as pad stems, grass clumps, laydowns, and isolated wood.
2. Swim jig. An iconic river bait, a 1/4-ounce swim jig with a twin tail trailer offers lift and profile while supporting a semi-slow retrieve. It's also a quiet, stealthy presentation for spooky shallow-water bass.
3. Swimbait rigged on a bladed swimbait hook. This option shines when the bass are more tentative and realism gets the nod. A realistic paddle tail swimbait rigged on a bladed swimbait hook provides realism and flash in a more subtle package than say a spinnerbait or bladed jig.
4. Texas rig. A light Texas rig rigged with a tube or similar bulky plastic reduces drop speed for pitching into those prime areas. It's also a great "cast back" bait if you miss a fish on a moving bait.
Again, pay close attention to your fish finder's temperature gauge but also the wind. Assuming air temps are warmer than water temperatures, a light- to moderate wind blowing into protected pockets can pile up the warmest water. Find these areas and you'll often land on a load of willing bass.

This video was so helpful! Awesome job. Tied on all 4 of these baits today on the Ohio River. Managed to catch a 4.4 and a couple other 2or3 pounders. Caught fish on 3 of the 4 tactics. (Texas Rig didn't get fished much) thank you again. Its so hard to find any decent information or content on river bass fishing.

Never have understood why so many pros cast and reel right handed - cast right handed and reel left handed like Seth here and you don't have to switch the rod from hand to hand
I think the younger pros who still use righty learned from old timers. It's just whatever you got used to as a child. I was born in MN and still there. Almost every bass angler in MN uses lefty like Seth because we Minnesotans all grew up with spinning gear fishing for walleye and panfish. For some reason, spinning reels are mostly sold with the handle on the left and even though it can be changed, everyone just fished it as is. So we all just got used to reeling with the left hand.
There are a few moments here where he uses a right-handed and left-handed bait caster. Sometimes the reel you want doesn't always come in the hand preference you desire. BUT, you do make a good point. A lot of my friends switch hands when casting to reeling, and think it's funny that I use a left-handed reel so I don't have to pass the rod back and forth like it's a burning man festival. Tradition is a funny thing, but sometimes it's manufacturers faults for limiting reel hand choice, too.
@@garywest2250 LOL I guess. My dad put a Mitchell 300 in my hands as soon as I was big enough to cast so I grew up with a spinning reel and left hand reeling. I still left hand reel baitcasters even though I’m right handed. In addition to efficiency I like having my dominant hand on the rod when the rod is doing most of the work, so basically everything but offshore fishing.
Majority of people in the south do not use spinning reels. I see a lot of northern guys that grew up using spinning reels also reel bait casters left handed but I reel right handed and don’t switch hands. I also play guitar and finger with my left hand even though I’m right handed. We’re humans we can handle it.
@@Jcestanley Majority is doing a lot of work there. Everybody I know in the south grew up using spinning reels, I guess y'all went from zebco 33s straight to baitcasters? We all went to spinning reels as the next step. Might have to do with style of fishing. Farm ponds for bass and brim and crappie in lakes where I grew up. Straight to bass fishing in lakes likely lends more to going straight to baitcasting. Never said anyone couldn't handle it, but it is more efficient to not have to switch hands.

You are probably subconsciously noticing something he does that most other pros don’t. He is right handed but uses a left handed reel on a bait caster. No hand switching. Very efficient. :)

It gives it a more free-moving motion. It comes standard on the VMC hooks he uses.
It’s a MN thing Jkjk. Yeah it helps give more action to the bait.
It lets the hook twist freely and gives it more action. You can acheive the same thing by thing on with a loop knot, but the look knots aren’t quite as strong
