  • Curious about how the greatest chess player of all time would fare playing poker in a high-stakes cash game? Well, stay tuned as Magnus Carlsen faces off against poker vlogger Mariano, TikTok star Nick Austin, and others in this massive pot. Magnus employs his strategic playbook, opting to slow-play the nuts against some of the world's most popular content creators. But will he secure the checkmate, or will his opponents topple the king?
When you have flopped the nut straight in a multi-way pot and are considering slow-playing, it's often advantageous to do so when there is no flush draw on the board. In such cases, you do not need to worry about being outdrawn; instead, your aim is to provide your opponents with the opportunity to improve their holdings on the turn, potentially to two pair or trips. This will help maximize your chances of winning their entire stack!
Magnus Carlsen is currently the highest ranked chess player in the world and arguably the greatest of all time. The 33 year old Norwegian has been a grandmaster since he was just 14. He is the reigning five-time World Chess Champion, four-time World Rapid Chess Champion, and six-time World Blitz Chess Champion. Carlsen has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings since 1 July 2011. He also has a RUclips channel with over 1,170,000 subscribers.
Mariano is a professional poker player from America. He is a regular on the Hustler Casino Live stream hosting his own $25/$50 game. He has a popular poker RUclips channel with over 151,000 subscribers.
Hustler Casino Live is a full-scale, high-value poker production. Close to a million dollars was spent transforming the casino’s high-limit poker room, the Crystal Room, into the set of this new state-of-the-art live show. Hustler Casino Live looks more like coverage of a TV broadcast sporting event and appeals to those beyond the poker community. Unscripted and unedited, they host regular poker streams such as ‘Max Pain Monday’ and ‘Thirsty Thursday’. Some of the most notable poker players to have appeared on the show are Phil Ivey ‘The Tiger Woods of Poker’, Tom Dwan ’durrrr’, Phil Hellmuth ‘The Poker Brat’, Chris Moneymaker, Doug Polk ‘WCGRider, Garrett Adelstein ‘Gman’, Tony Guoga ‘Tony G’ and many more.
    🔍 Pre-Flop:
With blinds at $10/$25 and a $50 straddle, Nate Hill is first to act under the gun +1 with 84 of hearts; he decides to limp in for $50. Kian looks down at two black queens from under the gun +2, then decides to make an interesting call rather than choosing to raise the straddle. JC follows suit from the hijack with J9 of diamonds, while Mariano, the only poker professional at the table, calls with 92 of clubs from the cutoff. On the button is Magnus Carlsen with 97 of spades, who decides to take a more aggressive route as he puts in a raise to $400. After the small blind folds, Bryce 3-bets from the big blind to $800 with AJ of clubs. Sitting in the $50 straddle is Nick Austin with K9 of hearts; he cold-calls the 3-bet. After Nate folds, Kian deliberates, astonishingly throwing his pocket queens into the muck! JC calls before Mariano calls somewhat begrudgingly. Finally, chess grandmaster Carlsen calls; five players head to the flop.
    💸 Flop - Tc 8d 6h
Bryce checks with his two overcards, backdoor nut flush draw, and backdoor straight draw. Nick now takes the betting lead; firing out a bet of $1,000 into his opponents, holding a gutshot straight draw and backdoor flush draw. JC surprisingly folds his open-ended straight draw before Mariano calls with his gutshot straight draw and backdoor flush draw. Carlsen, who has flopped the nuts with a T-high straight, chooses to slow-play and call. Bryce calls as they go to the turn 4-way.
    💣 Turn - Th:
A board pairing ten on the turn slows down Nick as everyone checks to Carlsen, who moves all-in for $4,540 even though his hand has been significantly downgraded from the nuts. After Bryce folds, it is Nick's turn with a straight draw and K-high flush draw. He elects to move all in himself for $9,190 with a big combo draw. After Mariano folds, Carlsen and Nick agree to run the river card twice. Nick will surely call on his 'one time' in hopes of winning just half of this massive pot. But can he bink a heart, or will Carlsen scoop the entire pot? Watch this poker video now to see what the river brings!
