Speaking of final acts making or breaking an anime...Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul: Re, Ranking of Kings...these are all series that were quite high tier, but are all remembered for falling off a cliff in the final act and the conclusion. Meanwhile you get an 86 or a Code Geass, where the show starts to dip just a bit going into the final act, but then it nails the final act so well that you feel you have just watched one of the greatest works of fiction ever.

The genre "Slice of Life" was more like Frieren back in the 2001-2004 era, shows like Aria and Haibane Renmei had similar tones. The words to describe Frieren might be "sublime" and "poignant", anime and other modern stories only have sublime or poignant moments in small doses as opposed to being part of the lifeblood of a show. One of the great modern versions of this would be Downton Abbey

I don't recall us warning you that it would be sad, we warned you that it was going to be quite emotional...difference! The way the first season has gone, we can be extremely hopeful for the future given how the source material is still going strong...so we don't have to worry about any kind of dip in the story and character depth.
