There are so many twisted comments that I found here... C'mon, even from his face, you could realize that there's something wrong with kpop music industry. He was openly like "help me, cuz this is so wrong, I was forced to do it, because the system wants me to do that". Of course he doesn't want this model. Creating good quality artists rather than creating good quality song. WTF.... THE MAIN PRODUCT OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS NOT THE ARTIST!!! IT'S THE SONG!!! THAT'S WHY GANGNAM STYLE, NOBODY, FANTASTIC BABY, GEE, BOOMBAYAH, CHEER UP WERE BORN!!! THOSE SONGS ARE ALREADY RARE EVENTS, THEY ARE REALLY A RARE CASE. WITH THAT NEW MODEL, IT SEEMS MORE INVINCIBLE TO CREATE AN ALL-TIME GOOD QUALITY SONG.... SMH..... THE ARTISTS WOULD BE MENTALLY TIRED TOO... NOT ALL ARTISTS COULD LIVE WITH OUR STANDARDS, WHAT IF THESE ARTISTS HAVE POTENTIAL TO MAKE AN ALL-TIME GOOD SONG? BUT BECAUSE OF THE NEW MODEL, EVERYONE HATES THEM, THAT WOULD BE A HUGE LOSS FROM BOTH SIDES... I kinda like the old-fashioned model where I like the song, and don't give an f about the artist life. Like 21 guns by Green Days, idgaf about his vocalist who were doing drugs. 21 guns is a good song, it's artist background won't stop me to listen it.
Watching this ten years later is a trip. He was totally right. Digital streaming has killed physical album sales, but the kpop album format is a great way of getting around it. Photocards and photobooks make physical albums valuable, and therefore worth spending money on. It’s honestly genius.
Yes JYPE always saying this until now, that every person has a talent but good personality was really hard to find. If you're JYP stan you can agreed to this bcos their artists are so kind. Also this totally explains why digital songs is the main for korea they're not into album/physical bcos no one buys for many songs in a cd.
S. Korea had its own facebook-like since 1999. Most people got rid of physical albums and started to stream their music through the web since 2004. Internet culture evolves way faster there.
Excuse my language but I'm so amazed that JYP speaks fucking great English and this video was taken back in 2009. He's gotta be even better today in 2018, almost 10 years after! As for me, I speak English (native), Hmong and Chinese (both fluent) and I can tell you I sometimes lack confidence with my secondary languages. Anyway, I've always thought that JYP was a super cool dude and there were a few years that his company was struggling a bit but now they're back up especially with the crazy success of Twice. BTW, what he said here in 2009 totally reflects where we are now. Digital downloads is were it's at and with current physical albums, what we get are nice collectibles like cards and photos BUT especially in Korea, you can a chance to win a spot to attend fan-sign ceremonies with your favorite singer(s) through the CD. Now that's smart business!
+darren lee However they are not very original... they just take hip hop/rap or pop and put some popular spin but not breakthrough original music. If you look at all the star they all act and look the same. He is just a business person who care more about income than it's member. Look at how he made Tsuzu apologize for being Taiwnese and being proud enough to wave the Taiwanese flag. Shameful!
They are also fair in their revenue sharing with their artists. In other companies, artists have to pay "trainee fees" to the company before they can earn money themselves. This trainee fee is the initial investment of a company to train a potential star and support him/her with all his/her needs (ie. teacher payment, lesson payment, clothes, food, lodging, allowance, etc.). JYPE doesn't have this "trainee fee". You are essentially helped to become a star for free.
I guess this is why GOT7 is more active in other countries with tours and fan meetings rather than promoting in korea. Hmm, starting to understand papa JYP's promotion with his artists 💕
Now, 10 years later, the world has changed as exactly as Mr. Park said. I can't help but admit and respect him. So I hate it. It seems like the era of musicians and artists is over.
It only chaned. Same as when physical mediums came out during and after the industrial revolution. We can adapt and adjust. Those who resist will have definitely a difficult time ahead, just like in the past which is why we should learn history, to prevent our own boldness.
around 5:38 when he starts talking about release cycles, it's definitely the whole mini album concept and the frequency of release cycles that shapes and defines the industry up until today is what makes a musical year in kpop so satisfactory to fans, and it works so well. say the avg idol group has 2 comebacks a year, maybe 3 (though the avg is 2), that means 3 mini albums that end up amounting to a full length album worth of music at the end of a year, but since its scattered, the fan/customer ends up happier because the artist has had more activity throughout the year, and they can take the next year to make a full length album or continue in the same mini album path. what i'm saying is obvious, but the korean music industry adapted to this way before the western music industry and i find that incredibly fascinating. and it's absolutely true that albums are regarded as collective items rather than a source of music. i think that's true all around the world now. you can argue about the ethics of essentially creating a product out of a person, and then working them to their bone frequently (esp w/ how competitive the industry is getting with so many debuts happening these days), especially if you value authenticity and originality in an artist, but even the industry these days is being reshapen by a lot of talents who self-produce for their own groups and take a more postmodernist (socially, politically tinged) approach to their art - reflective of the earlier days with figureheads like seo taiji. then it becomes a question of burnout and pressure. but i see this slow change as idols taking the reign of and controlling their art - which i completely welcome. this turned into a dumb rant lol.
WOW!! Very informative... JY Park is so right...buying a whole album is so inconvenient, it not like all the songs in the album are worth listening..it's a waste of money.. it's great he came up with a mini-album.. Well i'd say he's a visionary of Asian music.. Great analysis of what will happen to the future music industry..
I wonder if this is why he wanted to create Studio J, to keep the soul and artistry alive in music. 'Cause I remember Day6's songs were more popular than the members and that they didn't even want to attend to any Korean shows like Weekly Idol, etc.
He is right, every single point he made is right. Food for thought, I find it incredible how purchasing physical CD copies have become almost obsolete, when vinyls are now on the rise again.
As an older American tired of the American music scene I found K Pop to be such a refreshing change. I love what JYP, SM and others are doing. I've become a big fan. The Korean young ladies present a role model that I would have my own daughter emulate. I hope the Wonder Girls rub off on us instead of the other way round
Omg i love jyp from the begining because all hes artist loves him and no one lives the agency coz he always treat hes artist and staff as hes own family thats why hes so blessed💙💙💙
Now, JYP artists have fans from all over the world! Not only from Korea. His thinking is correct. Finally, NiziU got debut from Japan and I love them because of their human being. I never thought I’m gonna be a fan of Korean artists!!
I'd like to add that design is also important. The difference between a kpop album and say an American album is completely different. Korea knows that people won't buy unless there is something unique about their purchase. That's why their albums are different sizes, pop-up etc. they also come with a lot of different things so it really is like a collectible while most Western CDs are so bland. Pretty much all look the same
Watching this video 11 years later in 2020 is.. interesting, considering how Kpop has become huger than ever to the point that a Kpop boy band (BTS) is now irrefutably the world's biggest boy band... The Kpop industry was way quicker than the Western market in adapting to the changes that technology was forcing upon the globe, as exemplified by Mr J.Y.Park here... Also, I remember back in the days when Jpop was way more popular than Kpop in my high school, but now... Kpop has really gone global and is way ahead than Jpop in terms of global popularity. As a 90s kid, I find it really fascinating to witness and live through all these changes wrought by the insane evolution of technology.
I just wanna add some shed of light on this matter. I can understand how genius his thought is, but from another point of view, he may have either ignored or missed the fact that by selling the stars/idols instead of good tracks or album, there is a bigger potential that majority of people will someday begin to buy the artist and not the music. You know what I mean. I fear that in the future, next generations will not know good music anymore, but simply cool stars.
i agree but i like album. if the convience goes so long no one will appreciate the music. When they get an album waiting 2 or 1 year i mean the joey of going and buying the album on the day when it came out it's amazing especially when you know you can support your biggest idol in life... but i agree with JYP. people don't know how to appreciate anymore... its true in the future thats what everyone would want... i love you J
I think jyp company mostly big market it’s in Asian country Japan Korea and China . For usa and other western countries they’re so hard understanding our Asian country’s culture . Aslo our Asian people appearance so hard to attracting to western people.

BUT BECAUSE OF THE NEW MODEL, EVERYONE HATES THEM, THAT WOULD BE A HUGE LOSS FROM BOTH SIDES... I kinda like the old-fashioned model where I like the song, and don't give an f about the artist life. Sozialminister nowadays no one buy albums for the music when you can stream and buy it on i tunes etc. That is the way to sell physical album by giving them more than just a cd. I am a cd buyer because i love to play cds in my car while im driving. But i do appreciate when korean entertainment industry especially make an effort to be creativ in packaging and at the same time the price are still affordable. It worth to have a cd and other else!
lol, now, 5 years later, we are living the words of Mr. Jin Young Park
True :')
It should now just japanese market who buys real cd album
now another 5 year gone..
Fakk, now is 2019, and it's getting worse

JYP is kind of a genuine genius in this generation. Its awesome...
This bald guy didn't know that korea has the fastest internet in the whole world, that's why all people just use music streaming and not albums.
Yes JYPE always saying this until now, that every person has a talent but good personality was really hard to find. If you're JYP stan you can agreed to this bcos their artists are so kind.
Also this totally explains why digital songs is the main for korea they're not into album/physical bcos no one buys for many songs in a cd.
this guy seems like the only one in the music industry that has his head in the right place and not up his own ass.
awesome. his thinking was ahead of the market. this was in 2009!
S. Korea had its own facebook-like since 1999.
Most people got rid of physical albums and started to stream their music through the web since 2004.
Internet culture evolves way faster there.
LOG wow!!
Watching at 2021, what he prepared and explained to the world market when he was early of 40s was correct. Such a stunning interview.

Mad respect for him

‘nothing can beat the convenience of a customer’ - jy park
Sadly, stupid fuckhead politicians’ regulations are beating it in korea.

Jyp is a genius and far ahead of his time.
very insightful .had no idea he was this articulate .impressive understanding of the business.
I don't know he can speak english this good
he went to one of the best univ in korea. he studied so hard.
Speaking Eng freakingly doesn't matter in fact. Important thing is how clearly to deliver what you wanna say based on using appropriate words.
wake up he;s leader jyp
English is easier than Japanese
He lived in the US for a few years when he was young

JYP APPA IS REALLY AMAZING!
LIKE WHAT JR.'S CAP SAYS: "TRUST ME, IM JYP' :)
Looking back on his comments now....JYP is100% on the money.
He is right, every single point he made is right. Food for thought, I find it incredible how purchasing physical CD copies have become almost obsolete, when vinyls are now on the rise again.
damn. now i *really* respect this guy
he's really good in speaking english 😀
Concerts and tours are the biggest revenue as being said by JYP. Thats why since 2013 2pm are the breadwinner of jype.
year followed and mark joined JYPE and following year was jackson! I will audition next year
As an older American tired of the American music scene I found K Pop to be such a refreshing change. I love what JYP, SM and others are doing. I've become a big fan. Woah I didn't know this was exist.
JYP create today Kpop

whatever works i guess
PD Nim's English is good.
wow
Everyone at the moment: **0**
I think jyp company mostly big market it’s in Asian country Japan Korea and China . For usa and other western countries they’re so hard understanding our Asian country’s culture . Aslo our Asian people appearance so hard to attracting to western people.
can someone count how many times this guy says "so" throughout the video?
flyassbj 21 times already😂
