As a child and teenager, I would often use platform 4 at Monument then stay on the train as it turned at St James, because it just felt more convenient than waiting at Monument for the same train
Good video : ) For next time you could do Newcastle (Mainline) Newcastle (Metro) (Northern to Heworth, Yellow line to South Shields, Ferry from South Shields to North Shields, take the Yellow line back again to Central metro.
Next time you are a bit more south, (South of London) you should do Edenbridge to Edenbridge Town. About a 5-10 min walk from eachother but a massive diversion by train. From Edenbridge to redhill, redhill to east croydon, east croydon to Edenbridge Town. Also both station have an hourly service so bear that in mind.
Would like to add two very similar West London ones: Hounslow Rail to Hounslow Central and Brentford to Boston Manor. In both cases the stations are linked by a very short bus ride, but if you were to want to do it by train only, it'd be taking the hounslow Loop via Whitton to Richmond, Richmond to Turnham Green, Turnham Green to Acton Town, and Acton Town to either Hounslow Central or Boston Manor. There are other very similar ones like Feltham to Hatton Cross but none along these two lines are as awkward nor as close. Another fun one though is doing Hammersmith to Hammersmith whilst avoiding changing in a Zone 1 only station (I don't think it's possible to do this without entering zone 1 at all as you can't get to the H&C without an OSI on it's Western end)
Northern should operate a electric service between Newcastle and Chathill & Berwick-upon-Tweed using Class 323 and Class 319 EMUs. With stops including Manors.
True. Plus it would cause more disruptions. Unless part of the ECML north of Newcastle was to be quadrupled which means the slower trains would use the slow tracks and the faster trains use the fast tracks.
That would be awesome! I've often wondered why they don't use electric traction for the Newcastle - Morpeth - Chathill - Berwick services. The only issue I can see at present, is that those trains have used the same (bay) platforms in Newcastle for about 30 years; and they're not electrified. I'm sure that could be overcome though. The 323 would be perfect for that route.
There are generations of Geordies to this day, who accidentally miss-spell 'manners' as 'manors' because of that station/area 😄 (I was one for a while).
Go on a football day, and you’ll find many supporters changing at Monument, off Metros from South Shields/South Hylton and also the North side of the loop, as its quicker than going all the way round the coast
brilliant pointless journey im loving Morpeth & i love Monument station with its proper retro feel at that station and i love Manors station which is Tyne & Wears least used station and great for trainspotting keep up the awesome work
Yes, it's also quite staggering just how big Manors Metro Station is, considering there is absolutely nothing in Manors (anymore - there used to be a great cinema there 'til the early 80s) and no-one ever gets on or off there!
I saw the title of this suggested and did a double take, I love the absurdity of this, I can also remember as a very young child being taken to explore the derelict Manors station. It was huge and had numerous tunnels running under it, which we tried to get through. It says on wiki it closed in 1978 but it would have been mid 80s when we explored it.
03:00 well I never (just a joke, great video!! I tried to do something vaguely similar way back in 1989. Manors (mainline) was then a wilderness of mostly overgrown infrastructure with a couple of platforms actually habitable, kinda surreal.
Thank you for this amusing video ! You didn’t really need to go all the way to Sunderland to change for a northbound train to Manors. A simple cross platform change at Pelaw would have been much quicker, with additional trains coming up from South Shields !
Pelaw doesn’t have a national rail platform, he was getting a northern from Newcastle mainline to Sunderland, as Sunderland is a station shared between national rail and the metro, so he wouldn’t have to change stations like he would at a station like Heworth
@@billymcmedic4221 - I thought there was only one station at Heworth (used by National Rail and Metro)? You're right about Pelaw, no National Rail connection, but are you saying there are two separate stations for Heworth; NR and Metro? Because I ised to live in Heworth (albeit for a short while) and didn't know this haha.
Northern class 156s are a nightmare I hope they will get replaced with a fleet of class 158s.Also the Tyne and Wear metro is supposed to get new trains but they are on test still.
Really enjoying these pointless journeys so far, if I can offer up a few suggestions for future videos in the series: Severn Beach to Pilning. About a 35 min walk between the two but the train journey is much longer and also made even more complicated by the fact that no trains towards Cardiff call at the station anymore. I think you have to go to Severn Tunnel Junction and then come back down the line again and even then the station only gets 2 trains a week (I know there's a local campaign group to get the station back on the map properly) Upper Warlingham to Whyteleafe: It's a 3 minute walk between the two stations but the train journey involves having to go all the way up to South/East Croydon and then coming back down the other line again Dorking (main) to Dorking Deepdene: Another short walk between two stations but on perpendicular lines. I think you have to go to Guildford and then get a train towards Leatherhead, make another change there and then come back down the line towards Horsham Clock House to Beckenham Road Tram Stop: a 3 minute journey by foot but the train/tram journey is much more complicated. There are occasional train journeys from New Beckehnam to Beckehnam Junction but these are very limited, the easier thing to do would be to get a train down to Elmer's End and then change to the Tramlink services, changing over at Arena for a Beckehnam Junction tram.
Platform 4 at Monument, is mainly there for Matchdays, same with St. James Metro Station. As it gets extremely busy when loads of Newcastle Fans are travelling to a Home Match at St James
Walkergate is OK. Just a mainly residential area with a Lidl and a bus depot. Not particularly dangerous. It’s true, not many people get on from Platform 4 at Monument, but it’s the busiest station on the Metro and is in Newcastle City Centre. Plenty people use Platform 4 when getting off.
Said in a previous video, Monument to Monument platforms 1/2 to 3/4. Others you could do but would cost a bit are some of the Scottish ones where the train splits.
Some pointless journeys in Scotland ideas. I have 2 ideas the first is the between the two stations serving Glenrothes in Fife which are actually located in villages outside of Glenrothes. The two stations are Glenrothes with Thronton on the outer Fife Circle line (in the village of Thornton) to Markinch which is a station on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line. The second idea I have is between the two main stations in Coatbridge. Coatbridge Sunnyside (on the North Clyde Line) to Coatbridge Central (on the Motherwell to Cumbernauld Line).
People do use platform 4 at Monument to get to football matches. There was an original plan to have an exit from the station straight into the ground but it was cancelled! Incidentally I bought the first passenger ticket from Monument, November 1981 I think. And sold it for £5 immediately.
Imagine how much it would be worth now! I was there on the first day of operation (actually August 1980, before the Queen's - later - official opening), St James to Tynemouth (or possibly North Shields) on the old Blue line. Wish I'd kept my ticket!
Great video! I don’t know if it’s already been suggested, but perhaps Wigan North Western to Wigan Wallgate? Situated yards from each other but serve very different types of traffic.
Morpeth is actually a really nice town, though quite a hike from the station, from what I remember. You should go there sometime and do a proper explore. And I know just what you mean about Sunderland - reasonably central location in large city, yet usually fairly quiet! Other ideas? Helensburgh Central to Helensburgh Upper, Tyndrum Lower to Upper Tyndrum, Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley Canal, Falkirk Grahamston to Falkirk High, Coatbridge Sunnyside to Coatbridge Central, Blackpool North to Blackpool South, Heath High Level to Heath Low Level, Wakefield Westgate to Wakefield Kirkgate, Pontefract Monkhill to Pontefract Baghill via Pontefract Tanshelf... and doubtless, many more!
Lol Really enjoyed that. Altho you could’ve made it a lot shorter by going from Manors Metro, to Monument then change from platform 4 to P1 then head to Central Station and get Northern from there. Still a really enjoyable video Nic.k. Thanks for a very entertaining few minutes.
Platform 4 at Monument used to get very busy on Newcastle United match days when I lived in Neville's Cross, Co Durham in the early 1990's. As Toon Army fans would change for St James's.
I recently discovered both your channel and series, needless to say, I've subbed, and one pointless journey I'd suggest is Catford to Catford Bridge (a journey so pointless that National Rail Enquiries says it's an invalid journey)
I only ever visit Newcastle Upon Tyne once a year (for a certain running event) and used the Metro to Manors and thought I’d got off at the end of the world! 😂 I always find the St James bit of the Metro map confusing and which trains are going where on that bit? - if you see what I mean?
Tyne & Wear Metro is a "pretzel" (or figure of eight) configuration. So the Yellow line trains go through Monument twice; once on the north to south lines, then later on the east to west. St James is a terminus station (east to west only) and is 0.45 miles from Monument. Yes, basically it is confusing for visitors to the city!
btw u can get tyne and wear metro from newcastle central station the green and yellow line stop there also metros are every 20 minutes so u didnt just miss 1 also can u do sunderland station (metro) to sunderland station (nat rail)

Down at the last stop before Kernow- Cornwall.
From Newcastle you could have got a yellow line train round the coast amd into Manors from there, or alternatively, getting off the Mainline train at Heworth and jumped on the Yellow Line there
Agree! Why is Chathill a terminus station for the Northumberland Northern trains?? There's nothing there 😄 The population of Chathill is about 4 wealthy farmers and a couple of rich Northumbrian land owners 😆 I'm surprised all Northern trains don't either just terminate at Morpeth, or go on to Berwick.
On 6:50min you say no one uses the platform, but in fact there are passengers getting off the Metro cars on platform 4, hence still have a puprose, even just to stand there and, make footage of it and post on a video hoping for success out of it. Anyway, thank you for sharing the interesting video.
Another suggestion, if you're in London ... West Hampstead (Jubilee line) -> West Hampstead (overground) -> West Hampstead (Thameslink) -> West Hampstead (Jubilee).
I’ve got a pointless journey idea! Windsor and Eton Central to Windsor and Eton Riverside. It’s like a 2 minute walk up a hill and taking the train between them is pointless.
If you fancy a Pointless Journey in London, you could try Penge East to Penge West. 10 minutes away between the two, but from Penge East you’d have to go to London Victoria, then either to East Croydon or Crystal Palace.
or you can do East Croydon to West Croydon meaning you havw to go to Victoria then change for a 06 or 36 service to West Croydon (or you can get the 00,30 or 16,46 to either epsom downs or sutton)
I would like to say to you I like your videos and most important thing I like in your videos your British English accent second for me how you explain us. You doing very good thank you very much.
So you went from Central Station on Northern to Sunderland and then got the Metro from Sunderland back through Central Station to get to Monument? I get the journey was pointless but why cross the same station on your trip?
Another "logistics" questions (because I'm all about those). How do you plan your Pointless Journeys? How do you know where to go and change? I'd be interested in a video that shows how you plan these (after you publish the actual Pointless Journey, of course).
Pointless journey idea: Smethwick Galton Bridge to Smethwick Galton Bridge (high and low-level platforms). There could even be the potential to double it up with Worcester stations
great journey! may i suggest glasgow central high level to low level - don't know if it's possible by exclusively national rail but might be worth a try! otherwise, glasgow queen street high level to low level without going to edinburgh!!
Glasgow Central (Lower Level) to Motherwell. Then Motherwell to Glasgow Central (Higher Level). Quite straight forward! Could make it more interesting by doing Glasgow Central (Lower Level) to Partick. Then Partick to Edinburgh. Then Edinburgh to Glasgow Central (Higher Level) via Airdrie. That'd take a good 3/4 hours 🤣 Could do either back to front
Brilliant pointless journeys Nick, it's a shame Northern pulled a Northern on you lol. I quite like manors station, it's a nice quitet station to do spotting at. :)
Yes, there are more spotters that use the station of National Rail Manors per year, than passengers that use it to travel! 😆 Great for spotting LNER and Cross Country trains that are slowing for their approach into Newcastle (as well as the Northern units up to Northumberland).
You just popped up on my feed for some reason? ..interesting concept! But what struck me is, you're a Doppelganger for a bloke on another 'interesting concept' channel 'Christopher Collects'. Even down to the slightly cheesey incidental jazz muzak!
Pointless journey suggestion: Balham national rail to Balham underground. (Could also do vauxhal to vauxhal or west hampstead to west hampstead via west hampstead since there's 3 of them)
It's used by about 30,000 people when Newcastle United are playing at home. People get the Metro into Monument, then change to that Platform 4, for the 1 stop journey to the St. James terminus (which is right in front of NUFC St. James Park).
As a child and teenager, I would often use platform 4 at Monument then stay on the train as it turned at St James, because it just felt more convenient than waiting at Monument for the same train
Aye and you get a seat too
Surely, people will use Platform 4 at Monument to get off a train.
Same as it means you get the front seat as well

From Newcastle you could have got a yellow line train round the coast amd into Manors from there, or alternatively, getting off the Mainline train at Heworth and jumped on the Yellow Line there
I like your style!
The St James Line would be used for all football goers as it stops outside the stadium for matchdays
Fantastic vid nick!
Chathill there’s a pointless journey within itself
Could we get behind Catford to Catford Bridge, the journey so pointless that you can’t get a ticket for it?
You can also do this Catford - Catford Bridge in London (but you have to use oyster or comtactless because theres no paper tivkets for it)
Another suggestion, if you're in London ...
Also Dorking to Dorking Deepdene
Farnborough (main) to Farnborough North
Birmingham Moor St to Birmingham New St
Highbury and Islington London Overground to Highbury and Islington Underground would be a cool video
Next time, you could do Thorne North to Thorne South
I would like to say to you I like your videos and most important thing I like in your videos your British English accent second for me how you explain us. You doing very good thank you very much.
So you went from Central Station on Northern to Sunderland and then got the Metro from Sunderland back through Central Station to get to Monument? I get the journey was pointless but why cross the same station on your trip?
Please try Smethwick Galton Bridge LL-Smethwick Galton Bridge HL
Another "logistics" questions (because I'm all about those). How do you plan your Pointless Journeys? How do you know where to go and change? I'd be interested in a video that shows how you plan these (after you publish the actual Pointless Journey, of course).
I think it's what's known as "looking at a map"!
Love the videos. Smethwick Galton Bridge?
Pointless journey idea: Smethwick Galton Bridge to Smethwick Galton Bridge (high and low-level platforms). There could even be the potential to double it up with Worcester stations
Platform 7 in Newcastle is the undisputed coldest place on earth (my opinion from many years of waiting for the Hexham train)
great journey! may i suggest glasgow central high level to low level - don't know if it's possible by exclusively national rail but might be worth a try! otherwise, glasgow queen street high level to low level without going to edinburgh!!
That'd take a good 3/4 hours 🤣
Could do either back to front
@@benbrist damnit i forgot motherwell is served by both high level and low level, great suggestions!
I think we need a pointless journey from King's Cross Station to St Pancras International :D
Ayyyy Morpeth, that's where I live :)
Yes, watched a couple of your videos with that insane fake American accent you put on! A Morpeth lad trying to cover his accent. Huh! 😄
@@droge192 1. That's just how I normally sound. i am dead serious about that, I don't have a north east accent.
2. I am not a Lad lol
Please havw a go in the Class 555s on the metro when they come out some time next year.
A suggestion of a pointless journey to do is Canterbury east to Canterbury West in kent. They have no good connection lol
In the past you could have gone between the two BR Manors Stations, North and West I think they were called.
Monument Platform 4 would be busy on Newcastle match days
At manors you can’t forget your manors
Nice video!
Maidstone East to Maidstone West might be a good one
Start of manors to manors Tyne and Wear, Metro
Brilliant pointless journeys Nick, it's a shame Northern pulled a Northern on you lol. I quite like manors station, it's a nice quitet station to do spotting at. :)
Yes, there are more spotters that use the station of National Rail Manors per year, than passengers that use it to travel! 😆 Great for spotting LNER and Cross Country trains that are slowing for their approach into Newcastle (as well as the Northern units up to Northumberland).
I used platform 4 once, then the train broke down just before st james.
You should do a Sunderland station video or the seaburn and whitburn beach video. would be interesting to see.
(Could also do vauxhal to vauxhal or west hampstead to west hampstead via west hampstead since there's 3 of them)
I would guess that "useless" platform is there in case the line is extended.
It's used by about 30,000 people when Newcastle United are playing at home. People get the Metro into Monument, then change to that Platform 4, for the 1 stop journey to the St. James terminus (which is right in front of NUFC St. James Park).
Catford to Catford Bridge 'stones throw away from each other.
