The Fall and Rise of Viktor&Rolf

- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- It took Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren thirty years to grow their brand to the beloved label we see at couture today. Wading through decades of unprofitable clothing before finding their feet with licenses. However, with that said, they tried repeatedly to find innovative ways to break even, conquering the art world in the process and discovering their consumer desire for merch along the way. Yes, it took decades for them to reach their pinnacle, but through unwavering perseverance they finally seem to be near to the profits they have long deserved

I remember the time when flowerbomb was EVERYWHERE!
It was inescapable, but the adverts were so so good
@@understitchYT indeed and the colours and theme always reminded me of Agent Provocateur too.
I walked a mile to the nearest mall to purchase it in 2012
@@Jacks_here I love that it gave you that, to me at that time it really gave me schiap because I was so deep in learning about her that everything just reminded me of her haha
@@understitchYT 😁😁😁
just off the fact you’re covering v&r i know this will be a great video - amazing brand
True artists
Flowerbomb is incredible. It was my signature scent for several years and I still love it today. My cousin got it early on after it released and I just knew I had to get it. It really made a splash at the time.
I have branched out and wear a variety of fragrances now depending on my mood, but I still do Flowerbomb sometimes. It’s just such a beautiful scent. My husband got Flowerbomb Ruby for me at Christmas so I’ve been enjoying that now, too.
When I was a kid, I got the story of their sealed perfume, confused with flower bomb, so when I went to the department store to check it out, I was very confused as to why it had scent 💀
@@understitchYT I can see why that would be confusing! I didn’t know about the sealed one until watching your video today, so that was news to me-I learn a lot from your wonderful videos.
@@lavieenlavande I dont know how I read about it, I literally would've been 11 or 12 and this was pre-internet-having-all-the-information days
such a talented pair and fascinating come up, I really think that the brand needed that slump in order to realize the true value of the couture line. Because that artistic avant garde element gives the brand so much life and personality. I’m so glad they are recognized and gaining popularity for this work now.
Great video as always
Sometimes it takes losing something to realise how lucky one is to have it in the first place. Maybe youre exactly right
I get happy when I see a post from you, lol.
I get happy when I see comments like this 🤍
This was amazing! Would love a video on Comme Des Garçons 😩
Thatll be a full year project I think and Im still working on my McQueen projects 💕
@@understitchYT also Zadig and Voltaire pls!
You went off with the french words, work 👑💅
Ah merci 💅💅
Viktor and Rolf , Thierry Mugler , John Galliano , Lee Alexander McQueen, and Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli make up the APOTHEOSIS of bring avant-garde style fashion into the mainstream runways have inspired me to a fashion designer myself! Thank you for this amazing video and all that you do on this channel!! 🫶🏼
I agree, they really are at a perfect intersection of art and fashion. I’m glad you like the videos 🤌
Love their “Amsterdam” green pot dress at 25:37 in the upper right corner.
Thank you! I was wondering where they were disappeared. I have an amazing navy army coat with a red collar neck from them that never would go out of style
Style is forever!
Yyyyyyyeeeeeessssss I e been checking all week ❤❤❤
Sorry its late, I was waiting gor the SS24 couture
Thank you so much for your well researched videos. I look forward to them. I always learn so much.
Thank you so much
Yes! Another upload from my favourite fashion channel. Your videos are so well researched and detailed. Question: You pronounce french words very well, do you speak french fluently and have you lived there or something? Just curious :) thanks for posting, you've made me a very happy bunny this evening
Gosh I think my french is awful. I read relatively fluently, but I really dont speak it at all, I just havent practiced speaking in maybe a decade so I just have no confidence to speak at all anymore tbh. Id love to go back to lessons though, beautiful language, hysterical people
I too have a piece: a silk satin bias cut top in black, timeless.
I always smile when you pause and say “however” 😊
Love your well researched videos!
Cheers from Israel 🇮🇱
I need to make a list of words I say too much, so far I have however, but, and yet, and then just any three to five word sentence slowed down to emphasise each and every word for either pos or neg events
So well researched! Bravo.
👏🏼
Thank you 🥰
Iconic! Love their art historical references
Im so glad that theyve kept in business through the harder times too, because the work they put out today is incredible
Did you ever experience the online vault/museum, by logging on to a certain link provided in the perfume packaging? It was fantastic. The Shalom Harlow moment was unforgettable as well.
They're undoubtedly talented, but I totally get why the industry was apprehensive about them. Their work can easily come across as juvenile and pretentious. Instead of coming up with anything new, heir collections often rely on childishly recycled old tropes and features. I am happy that they finally found success though.
Its all about perception right? What is childish to some is raw and pure to others, what is pretentious to some is well focused to others. Its all in how well that narrative is told and how well its accepted by the audience
@@understitchYT yeah I think after watching this video I'm a lot more understanding of why their career went the way it did. There's something kinda Mugler about their direction.
@@SquizzMe I would have loved to see Mugler do garments specifically for *art* galleries, that would've bee insane considering what he was making for the showpieces
This is fantastic timing. After seeing their SS24 collection, I’ve been very interested in their history
Thats exactly why I made it for this date 🥰
It's an interesting, familiar 90s beginning that they had - a period mixed with rebellious art school creativity and a stubborn Generation X fight for authenticity. Being creative with fashion was great, but it wasn't enough to give in and call it fashion, a battle was needed to make it partly anti-fashion. I'm about their age and recognise this sort of battle fondly - unfortunately, I don't have the international fashion brand to show for it.
A wonderful film, as usual.
(as a side note - some of those Piero Manzoni cans have exploded in recent years 🤢)
ewwww the cans…
Could you imagine the stench?
And i think youre right about that generation really working to be heard or seen. Maybe thats why so many individualistic traits were common with that generation?
The Russian doll collection was an iconic fashion moment. Simply breathtaking.
Such an incredible concept
Flowerbomb is the scent I wore on my wedding day(s) lol (African weddings are multiple days) so I always associate it with love and excitement ❤
Oh how lovely! I bet you had a gorgeous ceremony
Thank you for this video. Loved it. Don’t know if you saw my last request, but could you please do a video on the rise and fall or should I say the fall and fall of DW By Kanye West, brand and collections?
I saw it and I think I responded that Ive added it to my list 🙌
OMG you did not! I love love love V&R! I can’t wait to watch this.
Im so happy! Theyre such a talented pair
Please do Brunello Cucinelli
On my list 💅
Can you please do Nigo and/or Kenzo?
I very very very much want to
Is it true that many fashion brand only survive financially by their fragrances sales, maybe Cacharel, Narciso Rodriguez, Rochas ??
Oh yes very very true, often fashion is a loss-leader
You’re watching Understitch✨
📺
Idc their perfume will forever be on my vanity. If they do nothing else ever again but the perfume I’d be happy.
The perfume is so iconic
Would love to see a video on Emilio Pucci
Such an incredible history
❤
Could you do Ralph & Russo please
I've been watching them since I was a kid I love them but I just don't understand how can they be great designers and you can't wear anything. There's nothing for you to purchase there's no store you can walk in and buy anything other than perfume is half-hearted for the consumer
Really I think what they do is art first and fashion second. I was lucky enough to see a few of their pieces in the barbican in London and it just blew me away
Wow 🎬👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! ^^
never heard of them
As long as you enjoyed the video thats okay 🥰
You’ve never heard of Victor and Rolf? They have a super popular fragrance called Flowerbomb.
They are not brothers?! 🤯
I dont even think theyre related, in a romantic relationship, nada
Several designers know how to stay within avant garde, but others do it for the sake of avant garde. Which can look crass and ugly. Victor and rolf have always had me confused, and dazzled at the same time, without being an assault on the senses.
They really are one of a kind
Wow you should speak more French - it was hot
I think Im terrible, I wish I had kept up with it more
Oui c'était pas mal 😎 better anyway than a froggie who's trying to speak English 😉🐸
need a video about maison margiela, keep the good work man!
Yeah I really missed out not having a video on MM huh 🤧
Your voice is sumptuous. Your French, exquisite.
Ah merci 🤍
i rly enjoy your videos but you gotta let the rise/fall thing go baby…
I also do videos about launches when they happen and Im working on more life and death videos, but the current life and death has literally taken a year to make, so while its just me doing everything, it takes time
@@understitchYT nooo sorry i was just talking ab the name of these videos, it’s that the videos are so good but this rise and fall thing is just really cringy
They get the clicks though@@lll000l00o I've tried a few different kinds over time and people seem to like to know what to expect
@@understitchYTthe rise and fall is honestly great. It’s clickbaity but in a good way because your videos are always so well researched and full of depth.
