James and John played through Super Mario World together as neighbors growing up, so they're playing through it again and with the same Nintendo Players Guide they used in 1992! Former neighbors and childhood friends, James and John are the Neighbor Nerds! They play new and retro games, just like they did back in the day.

If you ever need some Nerd content please review the Evercade. Someone needs to save the world from these $h!ty games.
No James ❤you make enough money 🤑
Please review famicon and advance wars series as AVGN
How often are you doing this?!
Please do an AVGN episode on Sonic Heroes!!
The game still holds up over 30 years later
And has an amazing community creating fan romhacks behind, who is in their best shape ever ❤
I wish i can say the same with my Switch games 30 years in the future (the console sure will be pretty death) 😅
Still in the top ten games ever made imo
@@Smartacus420 I'd say in the top 5 with Odyssey, Galaxy, 64, 3, and Sunshine
And SMW was clearly a huge inspiration for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the best 2D Mario in nearly twenty years. It's still got a huge influence over the series. Arguably the exploratory aspects of this game were the beginnings of Super Mario 64 and thus 3D platformers/collectathons
Hearing the creaky controller brings me back
Gettin mad and tryina twist the controller but it jus makes the creaking sound and stays in shape
Same here. That "knock" of a fully-depressed D-pad. You know it when you hear it.
Those controllers are easy to clean I hate taking apart modern controllers
@@retrogamerfan123 Same. Old-school game controllers were so delightfully simple, yet effective designs. Modern game controllers have force-feedack motors, analog sticks, various LEDs and sensors, battery packs, shoulder button assembly that's entirely different from the face buttons, etc. It's crazy.
@@Computerguy81even just thinking about my gameboy growing up and how different the architecture is to what i am typing this on… crazy stuff. but im still watching mario jump around no matter what its on lol.
Wow, their home video still looks great after 30 years. I wish I had a videocam back when I was a kid playing video games.
Probably upscaled with a sharper rendering
@@philosoFreedomGaming that's impossible
i was thinking the exact same, recording everything and watching back on it
That dude's laugh is iconic
@@NoThanksBoss "Well, that's just like your opinion, man."
Makes me want to smoke a Marlboro haha I haven't smoked in years
@@brandonnotsowise2640"... let me tell you something, pendejo"
@@NoThanksBossyou gotta be pretty down in the dumps to hate on someone’s laugh.
@@NoThanksBossI think you are horrible 😵💫 for saying stuff like that what are you 5?
Those home videos were excellently curated.
i remember doing that a couple years ago, just wish back then i could have filmed more.
They were curated then, and they're curated now
Pretty insulting to call them just "home videos".
They're Home Films.
James and John in 1992:
"What do think we'll be doing as adults 30 years from now?"
"Who knows, but probably not filming ourselves playing Super Mario like we do now, that's for sure!"
Just hearing the sound effects, you know where on the world map they were
imma be real with you james, i had more fun watching this than the latest AVGN episode
The beginning of the video is why you should record everything.
ALWAYS record!
What if it's incriminating
@@TheNaturalGamer1this 😂
7:23 Well, the original inspiration for the mushrooms was Alice in Wonderland. The designers of Super Mario Bros were thinking "What kind of powerup would cause Mario to get bigger?" And someone suggested a mushroom "...like Alice in Wonderland"
Wow! Did not know that, but it makes sense.
I've always assumed it was based on Jefferson Airplane's "Go ask Alice" with lyrics like "one pill makes you larger. And one pill makes you small." As well as "And you just had some kind of mushroom. And your mind is moving slow."
While the song's lyrics may be inspired by Alice in wonderland, it is used as an analogy to detail a psychedelic experience.
@@michaelcashmire966 Sounds like are describing their White Rabbit song.
@@ChrisWoollett yes that's correct. The song is called "Go ask Alice"
@@michaelcashmire966 The song is named "White Rabbit" it's just about Alice in Wonderland. And also drug use, because it's the 60s (or 70s? I can't remember when the song came out).
Love that laugh! 😂 also the fact James still has him as a friend is amazing.
This and Mario 3 are still the best 2D Mario games, and some of the best platformers ever.
I agree. Although I have more love for SMB 3, this game is monumental. Both games hold a very special place in my heart. They were huge parts of my childhood.
The fact they made 3,
Then this.
They were a dream team
I'm more of a super mario world then 3 guy but both games are great.
This entire video just brings a warm smile to my face. Anyone who lived those times with friends will feel the same.
I was just talking about this at the bars tonight. I miss playing games with a friend sitting next to you. Co-op or trying to beat a hard game together, drinking mountain dew. Sitting there playing Halo 2 on legendary and all of a sudden you hear the birds outside chirping and the sun slowly creeping through the window, you hear your parents waking up and you have to mute the tv so they think you are sleeping. I remember playing Conflict: Desert Storm with a friend at his house and we were supposed to be sleeping since it was like 4am and we made up hand signs to say go in, hide, heal, go left, go right, whatever. This video in particular reminded me of those days. Maybe because I used to stay up playing this with my cousin when we were in elementary school.
I have those same memories with my cousin and best friend.
Thank you for sharing this awesome memory! The best of times indeed..
That James has footage playing Mario world is amazing
John bringing back the 2002 James mustache! 😂
just-a like-a mario brudda!
John brings such a laidback vibe to the table, compliments James's already laidback vibe. lol It's fun watching you guys hang
agreed! hope he plans on keeping john around for a bit cuz im diggin the vibes!
Man, playing this game when it came out I was obsessed. The game seemed so large and mysterious, I always thought It would be possible to find a way into the background and there be more levels to play, a limitless world.
It's crazy how smb3 is remembered and cherished the most but it's smw the most perfect mario game of that whole bunch!!
Well SMW didn’t have a Fred Savage movie to promote it.
SMW is a casual plebeian game and SMB3 is a classic
Man, this game brings back memories.
So did u even, remember you're child hood when u say memories?
I will forever look up when I open the castle doors in Mario World now.
It does it automatically lol
After all these years, this game is still the one that I go back to the most. Even though I've mastered it to the point of it being almost muscle memory, it is still completely enjoyable with every play.
You guys bring back memories of 1992! I played Super Mario World at my cousin’s birthday party in August 1992, remember that RCA TV and everyone was watching my cousin getting through the levels!
You guys are the greatest. I'm 41 this year , thanks for the nostalgia .
Looks like you came on it, bro I'm dead
That guy straight up look's like a punch-out character.
I love the shared nostalgia you both have, and witnessing a tape from when I was only 2 years old, of you guys’s childhood. Awesome!
Every giggle and laughter is what makes this video enjoyable, and I like seeing that! Keep it up James and Mike
16:00 "how old am i?" The truest question ever when you're over 30.
Its true you start forgetting your age😂
I hate how true this is lol
That's so sad
Alexa, play "What's my age again?"
Glad to see Phish representation. John is definitely a nerd.
Nerd or stoner? 😂
Both 👌💨
Mondegreen gon be lit
Phiiish!
Mario world is a game I can 100% on auto pilot. Played it so much over the years
Same. As soon as he asked what the football guy's name was, I was like "chargin chuck."
"After this, we're out of the woods."
Well, James is a dad now. It's only natural that he start telling dad jokes.
Sometimes he reminds me a little bit of my Dad and I mean this in the best possible way.😂
Super Mario World will undoubtedly remain the best video game in the entire Super Mario video game universe!
Nice 👍❤
Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World is my favorite snes game (five in one). 😊
4 + 1 of em!
5 uv uhm!
19:48
Mario: "Huh? You made it? I mean, YOSHI. Best buddy! I swear, my hand slipped and I accidentally let go of the reigns... I would never sacrifice you to ensure I made a jump."
trying hard
These neighbor nerd videos are great 🤣
July’s 29 92 I was 4 days old
me too just 6 days after my 4th Birthday and James Rolfe was 12 then just after he turned 12 on 10th July :-)
I was born a month after. Glad we got to experience the 90’s for a bit 😊
@@SoulforReal88awesome I was 3 bro 89 here
The fact you still have this is amazing. And it’s amazing you’ve turned your still doing the same stuff 30 years later, just getting better and better. I’ve been watching for about 8 years please keep at it!
i like seeing a big man be a kid again. love you guys.
This was a game where anyone could pick up a controller and start playing immediately and enjoy. A 100% agree that the game has certainly held up and another x amount of years it still will be amazing.
Perfect game for Neighborhood Nerds we can all relate to!
0:05 I love how him saying “hey” syncs up with the footage.
Man, things looked a lot better back then.
I got stuck in the forest of illusion because as a kid I never realized that the red circles meant there was a secret exit
This video is so awesome! It's very nostalgic with the old camcorder VHS footage. Can the two of you please do more of these videos?
I like this new Neighbor Nerds series, keep em coming you two
this was super cool, James
I love these types of videos. Just two friends enjoying a game.
i was sad the game ended and you had to be adults again. love you guys
I like these videos you do with your childhood friend John, he if fun in the videos. It's also nice seeing two friends that have been friends so long still having fun together after so many years. It helps the videos really fun to watch too. Keep making them as long as you like and I'll keep enjoying them.
I remember this game level 4-3 (I think) always gave me trouble at the sky level. I love this series.
Was there a fallout with mike ? I know they ended that series due to Covid, but still.
james went woke like tony, kieran and justin.... so sad
@@videostash413 I have no idea what you even mean by this
@@videostash413🙄
Nothing quite like the creaking of the old controller shells.
I'm loving these videos more with every one. Keep em coming guys
One of the hardest games on snes is Toy Story on normal great game
Just super hard
I spent so much of my childhood playing this! I loved the replay ability and mastering new moves like flying through difficult stages, finding all secrets! And when the game didn't save, just being able to run thru stages was fun!
That’s the best Mario game ever made
So cool you guys are able to get back together to watch that footage and replay the game
Love this series, recalling my own nostalgia!
I really needed this. Thanks guys.
Can’t believe I’ve been watching your videos for over 10 years.
Loved the nostalgia of hearing the music from this game too
Still a work of art, like the satisfying coin sound, the link to the past hammer sound always plays in my head whenever i use a hammer at work😂
James & John Fridays
Revisiting the gaming childhood with a friend... _better late than never, James._
This concept certainly works.
The game and the friends hold up still! Love to see it ❤
One of the games I've memorized the most
John's moustache continues to become more and more evil...
Yes! Such a classic!
MAN, listen to that Nintenbone creaking and cracking lol. Brings back so many memories.
I recently played super Mario world on my snes . It still works and I beat the game again on New Year’s Eve . Feels like heaven
Dude, other than Nerd, this is my fave series on CM
This is my childhood!!! Truly one of the best for the SNES.
Awesome you have original video of you playing. This game holds up forever!
Big John fan btw!
man that footage of u guys back then is amazing... n even having the magz still to go through
Crazy that while you where playing super mario world I was literally being born that exact moment
Mike looks different
Awesome to have that footage! Thanks for sharing that! For me this game was so amazing that Christmas I got it with street fighter 2 was prob my fav Christmas
Me encanto el capítulo además muy nostálgico y el hecho de estar con su amigo ahora en la actualidad recordando viejos pero lindos momentos
This is one of the funniest videos you guys have done. Your thirty year friendship really shows!
Yes, certainly.
What a great vide of two great mates playing such a great game! Big respect
Great video. I remember this game also being impossibly difficult as a kid. I don't think I'd fare any better now as an adult.
I genuinely love these videos.
Timeless work of art.
Still friends after 30 years..Simply incredible ❤😁
Seeing him throw the controller it looks like James is trying to hold back annoyance
True old friend banter...Love it.
This game is like muscle memory for me.
The best Mario game in my opinion. I remember playing this game so much as a kid. Great times.
Man this always brings me back playing super Mario world on the super Nintendo.
I was watching those home videos and expecting a "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!" from young James 🤣😂
There was always something so satisfying about advancing worlds in these SNES games.
Thanks!
Hey James I accidentally clicked on the thanks button while I was sleeping lol I'm trying to message you but I can't find anywhere to reach you. Can I please get a refund?
AVGN needs a nemesis and this guy should be it.
I love watching you and your buddy play games.. A+++
13:02 I love this laugh in combination with the game over music
i got all 96 levels on this as a kid, it changes the landscape when you reach 96, epic game
A game I never played, but have seen so many elements of in other games that it almost feels like I've played it many times over hehe
Neighbor nerds is my new favorite thing. More please
