    I've only been to Cuenca for a day, but I instantly fell in love with the countryside of Cuenca. When I go to Ecuador, I usually stay in Duran, travel to Guayaquil, etc. I have to say: You cannot complain about food in Ecuador. It was such a shock going to a vegetarian restaurant in Guayaquil and paying $2.15 for a full meal - fresh juice, soup, the meal which was rice, beans, salad, soy "meat", and eggs (though I did not eat that - bad for my stomach). When we went to a Chinese restaurant, we paid $2.50 and got a HUGE plate - I'm talking about a mountain of food that we even had to give to the dogs because there was so much leftover. All the juices are made fresh, but you can also ask for soda if that's what you want. Transportation is cheap, but you have to be careful of your belongings. Salinas, Ecuador is also beautiful, but I don't know about the living situation there, though I hear it is expensive considering it's a tourist destination - it's called the "Miami beach" of Ecuador. I really enjoyed this review and I do hope to live in Cuenca in the future. The only ones who speak Spanish are mainly those who are exposed most to tourists. Though not always. My cousins began learning English since.. it would be kindergarten. The education of English highly depends on the economic status of the city. The more $$$ a city makes because of tourists, the more likely they are to learn English. Either way, don't expect to speak English in Ecuador. Learn the language and you'll be better off for it!

    I was born in Cuenca, but I’m living in the USA for the last 20 years. I remember I was on the street and a US couple where trying to find el cafecito and was asking to a police officer how the get there and the officer didn’t understand the couple questions, and I jumped in the conversation and told them where the cafecito was and I can see in theirs faces the joy of someone talking to them in English lol

    "If there's a line at the supermarket, I can't even...." 😂😂😂 fast paced life, definitely the American way! It's also "slow" in Spain (Barcelona, Segovia, Madrid, Toledo), Portugal, China (Beijin) Mexico and France, and yes Ecuador (Quito, Banos, Otavalo. Those are the places I have been so far).
    I also agree that the language is a huge barrier anywhere really, including Spain, China and France (they don't speak English either).
    Yes, gyms are not huge in Ecuador since most people there walk for exercise (lived there for 17 years). Ecuadorians are not obsessed with body image.
    Loved Ecuador! Enjoyed the Chivas en Banos, looking forward to retire there.
    A must see country! My only fear visiting Ecuador is that I am going to fall in love with that country and never return to the U.S.

    Thank you for this video. I have never been to Cuenca but I am in the process of doing an exploratory trip there in October 2016. I plan on viewing some of your tour videos that you mention. Oh by the way the trip I am planning is a surprise anniversary gift and before you say I should let the wife know before I spend the money and commit understand it was the wife who has been looking at Cuenca as an expat and semi permanent living. So she is generally ready to go and in September she is retiring so this timing is good.
    I think you did a great job with the video. I appreciate all the incite you have and though we knew some of that. Having it confirmed makes adjusting easier.

    Nice and accurate review of the city! Unfortunately not everybody born in Cuenca appreciates it. Human beings usually have the tendency to think that everything out there is better. I love my city and I'm really happy to know there are lots of people coming from all around the world and enjoying life here. We still have lots to do to improve it, but I guess we're on the right path.

    con:, being unable to understand what probability of precipitation means...it means that the % given is that the area will get rain, but does not specify duration. i.e. 80% P.O.P. means that 80% of the region will get rain, the time it will rain for is not stated or even predicted. :)

    Thanks for your opinion, but now Cuenca is not that cheap on food because you do not know how much a regular person of Cuenca earns in a normal job. And true there is no clothes here to buy and electronics are expensive. Super slow internet because of the trade that stupid Ecuador did with the satellite. We don't have a spot of Satellite. The Houses and mother nature is beautiful, no exception, kinda of boring. At night time, everywhere in the world is scary, so don't underestimate Cuenca. NYC is worst and forget about London Nights. Water is vital!!!!!!!!, but also the water in NYC is delicious. But anyway don't complain in buying water. OMG! you are so right, People here in Cuenca are slow but not all of us. I'm productive. I can see that you have not really meant the productive people of Cuenca. Lunchtime is for lazy people. You know for sure that if you eat a heavy lunch like we do in Cuenca it's for you to take a nap.
    So your just tourists, and you don't really know the people of Cuenca. And we also know english legit!. You forgot about our history and why you guys like our peace. Gyms suck! that is why you have to learn to pray, and jog around Cuenca. You can actually meet good people. Do yoga!
    I'm glad you like our mineral baths, it also has a beautiful history and the weather is not confusing, you are in a valley and we are in the equator line of the earth so there is no season what so ever.
    Sorry for the taxi drivers, some are ignorant and thugs just like any other part of the countries. The music sucks, no comparison in that, but if you like your phone and like your internet get your music online, I do!!!
    You know what I want to see?
    interesting tourists who really want to connect with the cultural people.

    I've just spent 15 days in Quito, and plan to spend 15 days in Cuenca early next year. That will give me a total of 21 days in each city, after which I will try to decide where I want to live in retirement.
    I do recall Cuenca as being very relaxed, especially the center of the city where a person can just sit around for a few hours and enjoy the sights and the many cathedrals!Right now, Quito has the "inside track" because the Archbishop is a personal friend of mine (and we DO call each other "amigo"!) When I visited Cuenca last year, a new Archbishop had just been assigned but had not yet moved into Cuenca. It will be nice to meet him on the next trip.
    Are the two of you available as "tour guides"?

    Very frustrating to listen for 18 minutes and not hear a word about the cost of housing! Best airfare deals? Visa issues? Residency issues? Specific cost of gas ("really cheap" is not very accurate). Specific cost to own or rent a car or motorbike? Is it a bike friendly place? What about dating issues? Is there street music? Any clubs with American/European music (there must be at least one!) Specifically how much do clothes cost? Electricity? You seem like lovely people but you presented very little useful info relative to the time to used. Peace

    • @michaelferry2733
      @michaelferry2733 7 лет назад

      Hi, thanks for the reply. Didn't expect one. Re: dating. I'm curious what it would be like for and American in terms of meeting local women. Is there bias or discrimination? How are Americans/Europeans viewed in that context? I'm sure there must be a lot of discrete issues pertaining to interacting with local people in general but more so in terms of dating or meeting potential partners. I'm very curious about the street scene. Are there street musicians? If so, do any play non-local music? I'd be interested in playing Beatles music or Dylan etc on the street for tips (busking) would that be possible? RE: housing. I'm guessing it would be essential to know people in the area to get good deals otherwise you'd be subject to the 'gringo effect' of pricing? Does $350 include any utilities? But the basic question I think most people want answered honestly and realistically is how much does it cost monthly to live. I know there are many variables in terms of how often you eat out etc...but if you could give a range from say: it costs $1000/month just for basics (housing, food, utilities...) up to...x amount for say 'middle of the road' to quasi 'luxury' ...just give a basic range. I've looked at several other videos and I get the idea that some expats live comfortably on less than 1k....so, all the specifics you can provide are appreciated. What are the very best deals one could expect for airfare r/t from the states? How to extend from the basic 90 day visa? is that problematic or easy? I'm wondering too, as you talked about dismal internet speed. Is there absolutely zero access to high speed or is it just hard to find? Thanks again for the response and your time. I wouldn't bother you will all this if I weren't seriously interested. I was thinking Mexico but Ecuador seems to offer many advantages like the fact that the currency is the same. I've been scanning airfares and I've seen some from 'CheapoAirFare' like $350 r/t from NYC...is that realistic? Peace

      Why is everyone worried about being robbed at night ? Is this just in certain neighborhoods ? We are considering retiring there but if we will be robbed maybe Thailand is a better option ?

    We call it Castellano not Spanish and if they call it spanish it's because they figure you don't know any better. Annoying, I find it annoying that people don't understand it's our language and it shouldn't be shocking. In the USA they make a big dealif you don't speak English.

    • @sudamericuencano
      @sudamericuencano 7 лет назад +1

      Most of native people call it Spanish. Ur generalization doesn't make sense. And English either u like it or not. Is the most important language worldwide. Comparing it with the "importance of learning Spanish" is a false equivalence

      Daniel Andres SUDA there's no point in arguing with someone who called themselves putita!! LOL

    • @D_Marrenalv
      @D_Marrenalv 6 лет назад

      ferfernando593 LOL, "puttytat007" is not calling him/herself "putita"...
      "Puttytat" (or, "Puddytat") is, like, a stereotypical toddler's way of saying "Pussycat", and "puttytat" (or "puddytat") is what Tweety Bird (from the Bugs Bunny cartoons) used to call Sylvester the Cat (as in, "I tawt I taw a puttytat", which really means "I thought I saw a pussycat", to which Tweety would then reply, after a double-take, "I DID, I did taw a puttytat")...
      And this was way before the term "pussy" became a vulgar/dirty word in the English-speaking world...it was what most people in the past would refer to a house cat, like in the fable "Puss 'n Boots".
      Just an FYI..
      BTW, I wasn't LOL at you; I LOL at the idea of someone actually naming him/herself "putita", lol..

    • @D_Marrenalv
      @D_Marrenalv 6 лет назад

      Slava Litvin: That person's comment was referring to the original name of the old spanish language, which was called "castellano", because it originated in Castilla, one of the kingdoms that occupied the Iberian Peninsula.
      The subjects of the various kingdoms on the Peninsula spoke different-but-related languages ...yes, almost all being derivatives of Latin but nonetheless separate languages (as is still the case today with people there speaking spanish or "castillian", catalan, valencian, galician, asturian, and portuguese, among others). Later (in 1492 CE), with the unification of two major kingdoms and the final "reconquest" of the Peninsula from the muslim Moors, the "castillian" language spread along with the expanded & expanding borders of the new "Spanish" kingdom and became the dominant language on the Peninsula, other than Portuguese which was the language of the powerful rival kingdom of Portugal.
      The new larger kingdom became known as the Kingdom of Spain, and after the Christian Reconquest and the subsequent dominance of this Spanish Kingdom, its language began to be called "spanish". Later, this spanish language was being exported to other colonized parts of Europe and to the newly discovered Western Hemisphere, i.e., to North & South America, where it was known as "español", named after "España", and whose native speakers were called "los españoles".
      I'm not sure why some (not all) hispanic countries today still choose to refer to the modern standard spanish language as "castillian", which is akin to still calling the modern standard french language as "francien" or modern standard german as "saxon"...lol.
