You are reminding me of a Marine I took care of in the desert. He kept coming back to me with a broken cast because he kept using his broken arm. I finally wrapped the plaster all around his hand like a boxing glove. He did not come back after that. Your Orthopedic Surgeon should have known that you would still be trying to use that hand... Happy Birthday Paul!
His arm is decently strong actually with the plates and screws, it just needs to heal and grow new bone to mend it better. It would be weaker if it was a simple break and no plates. This is a worse break but stronger than a regular one in a cast.

“Now you’re cooking with gas”. I used to help my dad work on cars all the time. He passed away from an accident in 2008, 4 months after my son was born. He used to say that all the time. When you said that, I lost it. My son has his truck now and we were working on it the other day. Nothing big just maintenance and upkeep, but it brought back a lot of old memories.
