DIYfferent I love the color Ashley picked out for the door
I love the door and the color. The two of you are doing an amazing job!
Love the color and style of the door. Good job!
DIYfferent your door looks very good⚘❤
I like the navy blue for some reason the one who makes the decisions around here wanted all of our doors a very bright red ! After getting used to it I like it but it took awhile.
You do things anyway you want! I’ve never seen you do anything wrong!
Hi Doug and Ashley, good job! if you decide to paint the door again may i advise you pull it down, lay it flat and use a flow control product like Floetrol. it helps the paint keep a wet edge and flow out. i'm a painter, 35 years, 28 of those running my own business. if you need any advice, please reach out to me.
We may try to fix it in the spring, thanks :)
Door looks great! You guys are doing an awesome job! 👍😃🇺🇸
I misssss your videos badlyyy
I'm here! 1st. Whoop. (After video) Well looks like I was third. Hate that you didn't like the door paint. I'm picky like that. You want what you want. I wonder if spraying would have done better? Glad you are back! I'd love to know the weather conditions. Maybe one day you will indulge me. 😁😁
Was almost upset that we weren’t going to get Ashley’s “bye”... but you saved me a sleepless night 😅
Can’t wait for the final reveal once completed, but I’m sure not as much as you all!
haha, glad we ended up putting that clip in :)
Appreciate the honesty both in your own 'lessons learned' and in the apparent wisdom there (unfortunately) is in working with purchased items. Amazing how a company would save $.0001 on proper screws and risk getting "evaluated" on RUclips for a high quality door.
I'm impressed by the way the both of you keep rolling forward despite (unforeseen) things coming up in the middle of projects. Also you adapt to these hurdles like grass moving in the wind rather than stiff branches snapping in a storm. Enjoy your ride and may your place in the country be blessed with blissfulness. :-)
Wow! Love the color blue on the door. What a statement it makes. Great decision Ashley.
It’s looking good. I love the door. Maybe try a spray gun for the paint? You can pick up a cheap paint sprayer at harbor freight if you have those stores out there. Spraying usually gives a better and more even coat. I hate painting too lol
Getting those lights on is such a great feeling!! It was a huge turning point for me. 😃
Me too. Cannot stand not having lights.
Don't be so hard on yourself. the door looks lovely and the paint color looks luscious. Another great job, worth the wait!
The door looks good, it's almost impossible to get a smooth finish with a roller. Unless you know someone with a shop that spray paints cars then you could get a smooth finish😀
Hi guys, love the color of the door. I f you want a smooth (glossy) finish, let it dry for a week or 2 than the paint has time to off gass and is hard. Then sand it lightly with 240 and 400 grid and roll on a new layer of blue with the roll and tip method just like on boats.. roll out the paint and tip of with a brush.. after that you can clear coat the door with a uv block clear coat in the desired finish (gloss, semi gloss or matte) again with the roll and tip method.. doing a great job!!! Love the videos!
Dave Janszon agree. Excellent advice.
Your perfectionist personality makes it hard when things don't work out like you think they should... I can say this because I suffer from the same thing!!! Just know to us it looks great!!!
Stop being so hard on yourselves, you are doing a amazing job.looks beautiful, love the colour.what a inspiration you both are.
He is a stickler for perfection. I can't blame him. I'm the same way.
Thanks :)
Nice work. I understand your unhappiness with the paint job on the door. Next time spray the door before you install it. You'll like the results. A Wagner sprayer from Lowe's works well.
Ashley, your hair was pretty today. The door looks great. Can't wait for the next video. God bless you.
I really like the style of the door and the color is really cool also. I agree with you Doug on the door screws. They are cheap and they are also to short on the strike plate. They send little one inch screws that don’t even go into the jamb. I always discard the small ones and put number 10 three inch screws. I’ve never understood why such small screws to secure safety. Anyhow I think the door looks great and I’m GLAD you guys are back. I was starting to Jones a little bit. LOL Great video as usual. 👍👍👍
Nice job as usual. The way you transformed that living room is great, I can relate to the door issues you had:) Even when I thinned the paint and used an airless paint sprayer it still had a textured finish, but we learned to get use to its look and actually like it, it hides fingerprints and dirt marks better:)
The color choice is perfect, bold and like the others have said beautiful, and forget about the armchair building experts, RUclips is loaded with them, you build it how you guys want it and love it. You two are doing a great job and it’s fun to see pieces of your world, thanks for sharing with us.
Once you used a bad roller, you need to lightly sand the surface to knock off the high spots. Consider using just a brush - a good brush - to apply paint to a door.
Love the door and color. Looks great. I've been wondering when you would be on-again, missing your great vids. xx
I love to paint! And wallpaper! Every room is a different color! You can create so much beauty with paint! The door is a beautiful blue. Blue is the color of calm. You guys have come so far! Well done! ;) LYLY
I love when I see the notification on youtube, and that is your video.
Believe it or not, they are the ONLY channel I have notifications enabled.
Love what you have done already.. absolutely LOVE the dark blue ... gorgeous colour!!!
The cool/evening/night temperature might also have something to do with how the paint doesn't come up smooth enough...??
You. May not be happy with the door. But worst scenario, good for now. Change it later. As long as it keeps you safe. And keeps the weather out. Should work for now. Both of your efforts look great. A far cry from what you started with. You both need to celebrate what you have accomplished. Look forward to seeing your completed home. Take care, and be safe. GF1 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎
LOL!!! I love that you went back and got her "Bye" at the end. Wouldnt be the same without that ending to your videos. She is adorable. I also love the little "Yea" and "Yep" she says throughout the videos. You guys are awesome. The door looks great.
The door will look much better after you put the siding. I missed you guys . Ashley you look beautiful. Your house is looking great. God bless you all.
Ashley girl, that is one spiffy color you picked out for the door, sweet, 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤🇨🇦
Thanks :)
add some flotrol to the paint and lay it off with a bruh and it will come out smoother
darangemaster1 agree 100%
Maybe we will try that next year, thanks :)
Hey Doug, Ashley, been missing y'all.
I love the color of the door. Be safe and take care.
“This is really sticky” -Doug using sticky tape. 😂 we painted our front door navy blue, our realtor thought I was nuts (house is beige with brown trim), but it was perfect. Can’t wait to see the siding ya’ll choose!
So glad yall are back! Been checking everyday.
Me too
Don't get pulled down by the little stuff. The door will be fine until next summer where you can spend a day sanding and re-coating. Look for hard foam rollers specifically for varnish they seem to work very well with gloss.
Good advice
I work for a popular Window and Door manufacture in Ontario Canada. I've been there for 32 years and have been in Quality Control for the last 9 years. There is definitely a problem with the latch routing or the door handle routing. I'd lean more to the latch routing being the problem. Unfortunately it's harder to repair vinyl than wood. There are some special glues but it wont look pretty. We use CNC machining for both our jambs and door slabs with quality checks performed at specific intervals or change overs which keep alignment in check. I also spot check with jigs and calipers to ensure quality. We use bar codes and scanners for every part, it's a very interesting process. Most Door slabs come from specific suppliers. We use Masonite and Trimlite. There are several other suppliers of Door inserts too, again Trimlite is our main supplier. The hinges that are on the door look exactly like the ones we use, the have 2 bearings through he barrel and pin for longevity. They all come from China. We do use the supplied screws also but for the 3 " stud screws we purchase our own because of the exact reason you mentioned. The industry does know there is a lot of stress placed on the install screws. We personally discovered 1 type of stainless screw that snapped off at the head just like what happened to you. We stopped using that supplier. The sticky glue you mentioned on the glass is actually the adhesive of the exterior surround to seal the decorative lite so it wont leak. Just trim off the excess with a sharp knife or razor blade. Do not just pull at the adhesive or it may pull off more from within the seal. I would caution you about painting the exterior surround. We have seen surrounds that warp and fail because they have been painted a darker color and face the sun.
I LOOOOOOVE the navy blue! It's my favorite color! I think the finish looks good, but I'm sure it looks different in person. I'm so happy you guys are back!
The door looks awesome on camera. I am sorry that it has been disappointing for you. I am so excited to see your next projects. Oh, the lighting in the front of the house looks really cool, too.
A quick sand of 220 grit sandpaper between coats, and just light coats of paint would have ensured a smooth glass finish. Even now, if it is driving you crazy, a quick sand and a last final coat of paint should smooth any imperfections. If you can live with it, sod it! ;)
Great advice
Love the color Ashley picked and it looks very nice
I don’t know why. But I was so excited about your new door !!! Everything is really coming together. It all looks great 👍🏻
I'm not a navy blue fan but the door actually looks great guys well done...love this channel...nearly died the last week in anticipation of this vid...🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Using a sponge roller from the start would have given you a smoother finish, but also paint in full strokes up and down the door for a more consistent finish. The same when you’re painting walls.
I like your door, like the color too. It’s always a pleasure watching what you choose for your home.
You guys are so cute!
Love the Blue . Great Choice Ashley💙...Bye😊
Good job on the door, I really like the style with the rest of the house.
Door is beautiful. Ya all are doing great.
Love the colour, good choice Ashley. I've found over the years that good quality brushes are better for a uniform finish and use less paint. Rollers are ok for emulsion on drywall, although prone to splatter paint, but not for detailed finish on doors, etc.
Wow so awesome ! You both got so much done !! Its looking great ! I totally understand your frustration about your door ! But the place is truly looking good !! Love love love the navy blue color !!!
Ashley, the color you picked for the front door is perfect! So, so happy the front door has been installed - just in time for the upcoming Michigan winter. As always, your work progress is amazing. AND, you have LIGHTS! Yippee!!!! 👍👊😊
Research additives for water-based finishes. Ben Moore and Sherwin Williams now sell them. We ALWAYS use the additive for millwork and trim painting (brush, roller, and spray). The additive is as important as the roller head for reducing texture. You two painting an entry door together is testament to your successful marriage. Nice door design!
Ok, I know this may pathetic to some, but I check RUclips everyday to see if you have a new video up. I always think maybe I missed a notification so I check anyway. I’ve got the Hubby asking me now if my favorite couple has posted a new video yet! I got him hooked too! 😍 I was so excited to see this one tonight! Hugs!
I'm hooked, too! Especially since I binge watched their other videos the past two weekends!
Me too, I've felt like I was going almost through withdrawals LOL
Thank you guys :)
It is almost impossible to get smooth paint without spraying. Rollers leave a stipple that we builders call "orange peel". Using a *tight nap* or foam roller (3/8" or smaller) will reduce the texture. Adding a conditioner like *Flotrol or BIM extender* is essential for a smooth finish. Only a couple bucks, and they'll put/mix it in at the paint counter. Good luck guys!
Yes! It is an awesome product. :)
Awesome color for the new door. Only you will notice the "imperfections." It looks fantastic to us I think.
Exactly... but they have to look at it every day. Ha!
Took us 12 hours to install a set of double French doors the other day....they’re still not painted. Yours looks great!
Love the color of the door & I agree both sides look best the same color!!
From what we could see it looks great. Love the style and the color. Great job Ashley.
Might I suggest that a half wall partition would let natural light in the computer space.
Your home is going to be cozy. Great work!
I love the color. I think if it were smooth, you would have a lot of reflections. I think it looks great. I hope you plan on notifying the place where you purchased the door on its poor crastsmanship. I would at least ask for a discount. Hope you can fix the uneven latch plates.
I love the color and it looks shiny and smooth.
I think it looks great! Love the color......thanks for sharing your DIY.
My experience with painting doors for a high "gloss" finish is that a brush beats a roller hands down. I'd use a roller on walls for emulsion paint, never on doors.
The colour is gorgeous. Nice choice 👍
Glad to see you back, we were going thru withdrawal!! Great style door and Ashleys color choice is right on!!!
Thanks! Navy blue just felt right :)
I love the door style and the color you painted it. Y’all have made a lot of progress. Good work guys. Blessings 🦚🐓🙏🏻
I like it, looks good! Now you just need a big yellow M for University of Michigan 😉
Go blue!
I am OCD and that screw missing would drive me NUTS.. In fact I had one do the same you are so right about the hardware that comes with those doors.. If you want there is a way to get it out I know because I couldn't leave it alone and I think my way was pretty ingenious.. What you do is get a small chisel knife to dig a small gully around the broken off screw just deep enough that you can use the chuck on your drill to draw it out. Basically you just tighten the drill chuck to the screw stub you dug around like a you would a drill bit and reverse it out. Put a little putty fix the area you had to dig to get the screw stub and put a good 3 inch screw in problem solved...
The door looks awesome ! It really does pop. The navy blue is stunning. She did a great job picking that color out.
Nice door! Great color - Are you using Sherwin William's paint? If not do yourself a massive favor and TRY IT! Recently switched from every big box brand and will NEVER go back. It's awesome paint!!!
And definitely write the door manufacturer about sub par product.
We went with Dutch Boy. Maybe we will try Sherwin Williams sometime, others have said they really like them also :)
The strong blue is good. Rolling the paint on thicker might have have produced a better result. The paint needs to flow. A gloss finish is only possible with a good brush. And an experienced hand.
Great video! Doug and Ashely!
get spray gun u already have compressor
Love the style and color! Goes great with the Scandinavian interior. This should not be your final coat anyway...it's likely going to get scratched during the renovation. Recommend you sand and repaint all the exterior doors to perfection as the LAST thing you do. You've accomplished a ton off camera and it all looks fantastic. Can't wait for the exterior to go on! You two are amazing! Hope you can get siding/flooring sponsors.
I think it turned out great, it's that pain in the backside paint causing all your issues.😉 Cute ending too. It didn't feel right without Ashley saying "bye". ☺️
Great color choice!! Looking good!
Welcome back. I missed you guys. I like the new door. I think it looks great.
I like the door. Color is pretty. Looks really nice...sharp.
Beautiful door, love your color choice
Hi guys, as a fellow DIY-er, we are our own worst critics. We work and work on something until WE are happy with it! I think it's great ! I admire your tenacity! Keep up the good work! Kudos, my friends!
Beautiful door and color. If folks don’t know by now, by all the tremendous amount of work and detail to this project, that you know exactly how to renovate then they will never know. I wish I had a contractor as good and detail oriented as you are. Especially the extra effort of reinforcing the structure, the insulation and hiding wires, etc...keep up the good work. I would hire you any day. I wish you lived near me I would keep you busy.
Doug and Ashley, a wood burning stove will smoke up the walls. My parents used a wood stove for years to save on the heat bill but it made such a mess.
I’ve been following your adventure off and on, and today I subscribed to your channel! I am intrigued at your intestinal fortitude to do everything your are doing. I know from some of my own DIY experiences a sense of pride at accomplishing something without depending on a profe$$ional doing the job for me! Makes what you do that much more meaningful! I’m hanging with you to the very end! Looking forward to your every accomplishment and learning experience! Keep on keepin’ on! ❤️ everything!
Thank you. We really appreciate you joining us :)
Try sanding with a fine grade sandpaper, then do another coat of paint. That may help you achieve a better finish. I enjoy the videos and admire your work ethic. You two are a great team.
It amazes me you taught yourselves how to do the renovations. You make it look so easy, enjoy watching.
I want my door and shutters that navy love that color on houses
So sorry that your door was not what you expected or worth what you paid for it. The Navy looks beautiful though. Have missed you guys, but understand that many of the little jobs are not worth the time filming and editing. Don't let the paint job annoy you too much Doug and Ashley, it can be fixed a little later I'm sure. Blessings ❤
Yeah you're back!!! Loved the ending!😊
The door is here. What a pretty door it is
I love Ashley's choice in color
Navy is clean and sophisticated and unexpected. Just love it. Great job.
It’s a great color👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wet sand the door, it shouldn't take long and it should improve the finish.
Keep lots of product on the roller, wet wet wet roller. That'll reduce a ton of the problem you're seeing which we call "pull."
You may want to invest in a spray gun. It will give you a better finish. You also may want to research which brand of interior/exterior paint. Some acrylic based paints are like stringy plastic and go on more transparent than you like. You may not like painting, but you should never be afraid of paint. It can be the most economical method to making a big change in your environment. Also, you may have had better results if you sanded and primed the door first. Even if the manufacturer says the door is ready to paint, a bit of sanding would have roughened the surface and made the paint adhere better. The surface would take more paint and make better coverage. You chose a lovely color. Kudos to Ashley. It's a color you can live with for a long time.
The door looks fantastic your too hard on yourself. You guys are brilliant
I never use anything but foam rollers on doors. And I always roll from top to bottom, not choppy like you did. And I always use semi-gloss, easier to wash. Everyone thinks that I had the factory do the colour. Matt paint is very hard to work with bcos every brush/roller stroke shows, unless you are a expert, which I am not.
Ashley, you have great taste, I luv the colour.
And you young man, you really need to mention your name at the beginning of the video. I'm a senior and have trouble remembering my own name. lolol
Bless your heart, you are a perfectionist in all that you do, but you shouldn't beat up on yourself. We can't see the flaws in the paint, so to us it looks great.
Now that you have the right sponge roller with the rounded ends, you can always slap another coat of paint on it. If its to bumpy, give it a "very" light sanding re-apply the primer and re-do the top coat. Slow and steady = perfection. Haste makes waste when it comes to painting.
As always, you done good! Get some much needed chillax time. Glad to have you back online.
Use floetrol. You will get a much smoother finish. Believe me it makes a big difference.
Lovely design on the door and good choice on colour. Have missed not seeing your videos.
It looks great! Don't be so hard on yourselves! Great job!
Well, I believe you that the texture is less than ideal, but it sure looks great on camera!
Love the door, suits the house. I had similar results with rollers... best to have it sprayed or sand in between rolled coats with fine sand paper... I ended up sanding everything smooth, added a thinning additive to paint and sprayed it with a spayer rented from the hardware store. Turned out perfect in end. Silky smooth... Knowing you guys, I am sure you'll end up doing the same thing lolll
I love the new door!!! You guys are doing an amazing job
I've done plenty of doors. Key to smooth door surface is waiting longer than the directions say to dry. And soft steel wool to remove pimples and dust it off. The slightest hair or participle can get bigger if it's not removed. And unfortunately BLUE is the hardest color to work with. It's a fugitive color and so hard to keep evenly mixed while painting. And then the UV sun rays will show the unevenness sooner than with other colors. I've learned the hard way to avoid blues especially deep or even medium blues. It's my favorite color too. :( But it's not the worst thing to re paint the door every couple of years. Just keep the blue paint handy. Super cool door though, and color. BTW, it's not too late to wait a week or two and sand it lightly and feel it with your fingers to make sure you hit all the pimples. And give it one more coating. It will make a difference. Torture, but it will stop you from being triggered every time you walk through the door. lol
I was excited to see your posted of your new video! Your door looks great, loves the color. A foam roller will work well. Thanks for the update!
