    So I grew up in a city where it was relatively easy to be vegetarian/vegan and then moved to a rural and poverty ridden city here in the US where the grocery stores couldn’t get certain fruits and vegetables and often got really poor quality vegetables. I had the privilege to have meals shipped to my door but that was really hard financially. It was a really eye opening experience. It’s really easy to say oh they can’t even grow fruits and vegtables when you are coming from a place of privelege but you can’t denine that being vegetarian and vegan is not always a healthy feasible option.

    i think being able to afford a vegan diet is not the same in other parts of the us for example Latin America(or other developing countries) in some countries here, you cannot be able to even afford a nutritious diet, heck my family was worry about getting a place to live rather than anything else, food came second but even there the importance was having something in the mouth and a full belly rather than anything else(vegetables nahh fruit naahh lean meat meh). furthermore, i also believe the cultural context is important, lack of education plays a big part in this too, people who preoccupied about not living on the streets don't spend their time searching for ways to be friendly to the planet, they most of the time have no background in those types of stuff. some people here still believe you cannot have a healthy diet being vegan(is not like you can easily change peoples point off view), there is also the matter of the nutritional supplements sure some you can get it through food but here practically everything is expensive beans and rice not much but how much minerals, fat, vitamins can you get from them?(a problem too of an insufficient diet) bare in mind that not everyone can eat those foods daily in my case I get an incredible stomach ache and so much bloating all the fucking time. there is no reasonable replacement for protein here(at least in Argentina) you rarely get tofu and there is not much besides that maybe some seitan slices and vegan sausages but again they were expensive so its better make your own, again is expensive to buy the ingredients but luckily i found a place that is less so(yey?)however, you have to take into consideration that is a special occasion, whether not for the fact i have to stay in my home i would not have the time. Either way...I'm rambling.. back to the point, there is a ton of reasons of why it is not easy to be vegan in places like this what i wanted to say is that the ones that manage are the exception rather than the rule. bye have a good day and props to you for finishing reading this haha

  • @kathryn3466
    @kathryn3466 4 года назад +40

    If you're living in Iceland and only eating oatmeal rice and beans, that not nutritionally sustainable. Thats great that you have compassion for animals, but it's also important to have compassion for yourself.
    That's one of the reasons I stopped being vegetarian after 5 years. I was in my early 20s and only ate processed foods and I felt sick all the time. I've been transitioning back to a vegan diet for the last year with nutrition in mind. I feel better and it's much more sustainable that way.

    • @TheVeganView
      @TheVeganView  4 года назад +15

      That’s an interesting point but those were just a few examples off the top of our heads. Protein sources like dried lentils, whole grains, tofu, tempeh, frozen meat alternatives, and nuts exist in Iceland as do a variety of frozen fruits and vegetables.
      All of those foods can be made into sustainable and nourishing meals there just as they are here. But we hear what you’re saying, it is a more effort and maybe not something that you want to do full time.
      But it’s important to acknowledge that it can be done in a healthy way and also that you don’t have to only eat vegan food every day to make a difference. Eating as many plant based meals as possible is better than none! Every little bit counts ☺️💚 Hope that helps you see where we’re coming from! Hope you’re having a great Monday!

Then I watched your video on why you girls don’t eat dairy.. ugh those poor cows! I love my children. Having to think about how their babies are ripped away from them after birth and they are grieving/‘morning their calves.. ugh made me cry. I binge watch all of your videos to give me strength when I feel weak (I serve/bartender and constantly surrounded by food). Could you guys possibly have The Cheap Lazy Vegan as a guest host one day? I have changed a lot, I've been vegan for 2 years now. At first I had no problem with people eating meat around me. Now it hurts, I see the sad cow being butchered or the pig who never saw daylight, I realise that is my thing and I still eat around meateaters but I cant hide my feelings.
    Without judgement I do explain why it hurts like hell to see meat. And it did change people around me. Several friends went vegetarian because of what I told them, even a few went vegan. And most all of them reduced their consumption of animal products!
    I love to cook so when someone tells me they need something for a quick lunch I whip up some hearty oatmealcookies and give them a bunch. Or if they notice they have trouble with bowelmovement after dairy I let them taste my favorite replacers (always have them around the house even though I dont eat them myself, just for this reason) I opened so much eyes and hearts just by being me and expressing what it does to me.
    Am I better than non-vegans, no. But I am a better version of myself, without a doubt!
    I dont prepair nonvegan items of any kind, I do pay for people when we go out and they eat nonvegan stuff. But never for meat, we go to vegetarian places and when meateaters obstain from meat, I think I want to promote that! It is a hudge step for some to go te veggie places so when they love me enough to try that, i want to appreciate that.
    I think it's all within context. You are vegan if you aknowlegde that animals are not for us to use or abuse, when you dont purposely consume any animalproduct, but for the rest its all in context and how you view things. Like you said be true to you, if you feel it's right to do something, just do it. You probably all drive cars which we all know are nonvegan so being 100% vegan in a nonvegan world is just impossible. Be true to you and forget about the vegan police, no such thing as perfection!

I personally would go eat with some friends if they had meat, but it does make you feel appreciated to have them renounce to meat for one of their meals, especially when it is often so difficult for vegans to eat in omnivorous restaurants (you don't get how many times I have ended up eating just side dishes and not get any protein whatsoever from my meal)

    I definitely think there are some vegans (especially on youtube) who think they are better than others especially seeing how a lot of vegans jumped on others for deciding to not be vegan anymore (Bonny Rebecca for example, I felt so bad for her). I think that being vegan is a very personal decision, and I think it's inappropriate when other people try to weigh in on someone's personal decisions. I was a vegan (or shall I say plant-based before I get attacked) for a few years until I realized it's not healthy for me mentally and that decision was best for ME. Also, I don't like how there are all these labels for non-vegans. I've seen carnivores, "omnis" (really?), meat-eaters, and it's like this passive-aggressive way of making non-vegans feel like we're outsiders when we're not.

      Human always want to feel belonging to groups and being in the group make them special over others. It happens in all groups such as religious groups for example Christians and Muslims, there will be group members who being judgmental and check on people who's being real Christians or Muslims, those who're not up to their standard are called deviants, heretics, infidels and such. The same thing here. I am not a vegan at all, I believe in science and science say we have to eat everything in balance, we eat what we need, it is simple. Veganism have become a cult with "either you're with us or against us" mentality. It's funny because I live with peoples with various religious background like Buddhists and Hindus, in vegan mind these peoples are not vegans despite they have been vegetarians for thousands of years before this new age western veganism belief exist.

    Watching this video definitely ,makes me think about my own reality of having raised my children non vegan and then changing to a vegan lifestyle 3 and a 1/2 years ago. My daughter is a junior in college and off and running, but I know my 16 year old son Leo misses my old way of cooking and finds ways outside of the house to meet those needs. He understands why I'm vegan from ethical, medical and environmental viewpoints, but he's just not there yet. I now tell him if he wants to consume animal products in the home he has to cook it himself and I don't want to be here when it happens. He has done that a few times but not much. I am really happy to say that we had a 100% Vegan Thanksgiving with my cousins up in Santa Rosa and I did not make our traditional Breakfast Casserole this Christmas. We kept it all Vegan and for that I was really proud and grateful. It is a process and my hope is that one day my kids will appreciate my efforts and perhaps decide to go Vegan as well. Lastly, as a joke my kids did get me a t-shirt for Mother's Day that says, "BEST VEGAN MOM EVER" . They were laughing so hard when they gave it to me. I don't wear it out, but when I where it at home it actually does make me oddly happy.. Happy New Year Y'all!!

My heart breaks every time but I live with a non-vegan mom and I got non-vegan food in my home and could not take a liberation pledge. I agree with everything besides the "allow yourself animal products occasionally". I would be more neutral - yes _technically_ you wouldn't be vegan but I think it really depends person to person and the intention. For instance, my mother is a vegan who has really strong chocolate cravings every month near her cycle. Usually she doesn't engage but every once in a while (once every couple of years?) she will give in and have some (no vegan chocolate options in my city). She's devout and does extra stuff like ocean cleanings and rebuilding habitats, so to me it seems weird calling her a non-vegan. There can also be new vegans who have cravings, food addicts, or people who are pregnant etc. So yeah I think it's grey.

    I get what you were saying but if someone is not as financially privileged and lives in a really cool environment it's hard to survive off only can beans. Especially if they can't afford heaters in their house, you need a lot of fat and it's way cheaper to get that from animal products. So the argument you made of people not trying hard enough doesn't really apply when you're on survivor mode because the reprocuction of that sacrifice are linked to diseases, malnutrition and in some cases death. It's not really fair to shame them because they're not the problem, they are trying their best just to survive and keep their families healthy

    I think vegans grossly underestimate vegan food availability in other places. Forget Iceland, go into middle America (or even poor neighborhoods right next to you) where it’s extremely poverty stricken and fresh produce is not accessible. Fast food in some places is the only way to eat. Processed foods are all you see in shelves. The option is either eat animal products or starve. So no, they don’t just have a banana lying around as if that can make up all your nutrients. Or buy rice and grains and you’ll be good. No not always where there’s a will there is a way. The guy and the comments made by these women came off as if people don’t try enough. If a person in these areas tries to cut off as many animal products as they absolutely can but that means only a 10% cut.. cool they are vegans. They are trying to their best ability. Now this is America, I’m from Brazil a country that poverty effects majority of our population (and believe me when I say that a good chunk of the worlds population reality is more like Brazil and not the USA) so again some absolutely can not sustain a healthy balanced vegan diet living in a food dessert with low income. To me if they try their best the intention is there, I rather a human survive then an animal. These comments come from a place of such HIGH privilege it’s hard to watch.

    Hmmm don't you think it's ironic how it's ok to wear/keep old owned leather because of the sustainability and sentimental purposes yet it's not when it comes to "health" sustainability due to limited access in deserted places.
    Even though it's obvious how harsh/valid the situation she's stated yet they still think she should find a different action. In a way, with that logic, you could throw the leather since it is against the ethics anyway.
    I'm just saying how contradicting it is. Though the point is, sentimental leather is not even that drastic when thrown away compared to starving yourself for the ethical value.
    There's alot of contradiction in this reaction, especially how they agree that the close circle should change their diet to vegan yet they're denying "no were not better". Like what's the difference in that?

    I need to watch more vegan travel vlogs. I feel like I am always a bit nervous to travel, even though I really want to, because I am afraid I won't find vegan food. Or won't be able to communicate well enough to ask what are the ingredients in certain food. I want to confidently be able to travel outside of English speaking countries.

    Is veganism really constricted to being “for an animals life?” Because I went vegan because of the environment and yes animals lives were a by product but that’s not my motive or reason for staying vegan. So does that make me not a vegan or a bad vegan because I’m not “for” the life of an animal.🤷🏾‍♀️

    • @joyfulrogers9970
      @joyfulrogers9970 3 года назад +2

      Some people say that if you're not doing it for the animals you're "plant based" but I personally disagree and that veganism is just not eating animal products

    • @august7535
      @august7535 3 года назад

      @@joyfulrogers9970 the definition for veganism is seeking to exclude as far as practically possible all forms of animal exploitation and suffering. So yes you are only vegan if you are against animal cruelty and exploitation. If you're not eating animals solely for the environment or your health you are plant-based.

    Not on topic, but I just wanted to say Happy New Year to you guys and all the new and veteran vegans here. Another year of not eating or hurting animals - wooooohooooo!!!
    This new year, remember to be compassionate to humans, including your family, bullies, curious people, and yourselves. (I'll try to remember my own advice...)

    I loved your perspectives! When I first watched the video I struggled with identifying with Richard, particularly on the pledge that he took. As someone who started as the only vegan in my friend group and coming from a family where no one was even vegetarian (my grandma is from Norway and my family has french and russian ancestry AKA lots of butter and meat) I would have been very isolated if I tried that. Because I was tolerant of my friends and their beliefs and they always made sure our restaurants had vegan options I’ve seen three friends try veganism, two vegetarian, and my meat loving sister is going vegetarian for january and february. After watching your video I feel more tolerant of vegans like Richard and can see a bit more where they are coming from! Thanks for an amazing video!

    For the first point about not buying or not cooking non-vegan food would you consider chipping in on the bill to treat a non vegan friend for their birthday dinner at a restaurant or something like that buying non vegan food for someone? Unless you only eat with vegans and go to vegan only restaurants then this one would be a bit tough. Not cooking non-vegan food is something I definitely do but I probably don't fall into the not buying non-vegan food if you also include buying milk for non-vegan family members when I go grocery shopping or do a grocery run for my parents or if I am treating a friend at a restaurant like the example I mentioned.

    Loved this!! People were giving Richard a lot of shit, but I sympathized with a lot of what he said lol. Also, snaps for 19:47. Although I wouldn’t necessarily say that someone who holds racist views but fights for animal rights is not vegan, but they are incredibly inconsistent and I like that she pointed that out

    I love your videos. Do you have an episode where you talk about truffles (fungus, not choclate)? I've been to so many Vegan only restaurants that serves actual truffles and sometimes the vegan option in an omni restaurant contains truffle. To me it's just plant based, not vegan and since it's not always stated on the menu I sometimes get it in my food. I don't know how to handle this and I would love to hear your thoughts.

    I'm at minute 3:59 and crying bcz I just tried going vegan abt a week ago and my dad tells me every day that this is weird and he refused to eat the stuff I cook (Which I understand when it's with mushrooms bcz he doesn't eat them no matter what, but he refused to eat pancakes and they taste the same as the normal ones with milk and eggs and it kinda hurts me... As well my lil brother (he's ten) sometimes walked in while I was eating, asking what I was eating and if he could have sth too. Then he remembered that it was vegan and told me like "No, I hope u go back to normal soon bcz I wanna have real food and not that stuff" and it hurts me and I dunno what to do......

Going vegan is a big change and you should be proud of yourself! 🙌 How was it been for you personally so far?

    It's true that not everyone can be 100% plant based, but (assuming you subscribe to the Vegan Society definition of veganism), anyone can be vegan, since it's defined as avoiding harm to and exploitation of animals "as far as is possible and practicable." The question is what is possible and practicable for you - which may not always allow for avoiding all animal use, unfortunately. But if someone does their reasonable best in their own circumstances, that person is vegan, in my opinion.

    The thing about food desserts, if its is for survival, it is vegan to eat animal products. Its IN the definition. Also, this question i think is specifically towards people who "ALLOW themselves to eat meat" not those who NEED meat. So Elizabeth's point is not valid.
    Theres also mic the vegan's response to it where he shows that the most accessible food in food desserts are actually canned veggies and beans. So....... Sorry Elizabeth is wrong.

    • @SelphieFairy
      @SelphieFairy 4 года назад +5

      So you’d be ok just eating canned veggies and beans everyday? Like.. if you have the willpower for that than that’s great but most people would not find that palatable nor all that nutritious.
