- There are few things in life -- or at least during breakfast -- that are more satisfying than a good thick bowl of oatmeal. In this video, Mister Nasty Clamps himself demonstrates a great way of putting together a bowl of oatmeal that travels incredibly well and is (in all honesty) the best oatmeal recipe ever.
Pay attention while watching! There's an ingredient mistake that takes place during the filming, and you'll want to catch the mistake.

You can add milk... You can add soy milk... You can add goat's milk... You can add water... You can even add coconut water...
The thing to remember about recipes is that they are starting points - they are basic guidelines. Recipes are not directions that need to be followed to the letter. They are outlines that should be adjusted to each and every person's particular taste.

Myself, I'm not drinking (or using) a whole lot of regular cow's milk these days, though I have been incorporating quite a lot of butter into my cooking -- salt-free butter from grass-fed cows.
And you wanna' know what's insanely awesomely tasty? Salt-free butter (about two tablespoons) in a large cup of coffee, with just a pinch of cinnamon. Honest, the flavor is fantastic.
I just tried your oatmeal. It is the best oatmeal I ever tasted. I did the recipe in a heavy corning ware bowl but had to put it on the stove after 15 minutes to absorb all of the water. The only change in recipe was using coconut sugar. I felt portion-wise I should only eat half at a time as I'm a diabetic. I wanted to eat the whole thing as it was so yummy! Thanks and I'll have a look at your blog. It might be too riske for me but we'll see.
I always but a spoonful of peanut butter in my oatmeal. It sounds really weird, but it is actually tasty.
Never use hot liquids in plastic, if you are going to be eating the results. There are lovely glass containers you could carry this is and eat from, without negative health detriments!

thank you, you saved me a lot of headache and fatique I tried this and I was truly amazed I drive public transportation and now that I make my oatmeal like this Im a much happier camper its great filling and just enough so thank you so much
this is what i eat every morning:::
1/2 c oatmeal
1 banana sliced
2 table spoons grounded flax seeds
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt
OPTIONAL (During winter season, when pumpkins are around, i add a cup of homemade puree pumpkin)
A cup of coffee and delicious power breakfast
yeah i had about the same this morning, instead of yoghurt i take almondmilk, so it is more of a shake. and i take two bananas and some nuts also, like cashew, hazelnuts, great !
Ed: The great thing about my particular style of oatmeal prep is that it can be done while traveling. No need to use a stove, a pot, or whatever... Just the dry ingredients, a container of some sort, and some hot water.
Also, preparing the oatmeal using my method turns out a tender, though still slightly chewy grain. I absolutely, can't stand gluey oatmeal.

I'm not a bodybuilder (obviously), though I'm very, very active with hiking, biking, and cardio workouts at the gym. The high fiber, high protein, unprocessed carbs contained in my style of oatmeal helps me make it through day - and through my activities.
Carlos: Everybody's different. Myself, I lost a minor amount of weight (about five pounds) after making this version of oatmeal a consistent part of my diet. And though I'm not a muscle-bound kind of guy, I'm certainly in good shape -- especially for a middle-aged dude. I'd be willing to bet that I can do more pushups than most people in their twenties and thirties, and I'm a guy who's staring at fifty.
Thank you! This recipe really saves time and it tastes wonderful, though I just prepare it with water and a little bit of brown sugar. Using a stove and wait until it boils doesn't work as good.
Gypsy: I too would put myself in the category of "Oatmeal Whore," and - in fact - I'm preparing a whorish bowl of the stuff right now as we speak/write.
A few things: everyone has their own personal preference towards food consistency and texture, and I tend to prefer dishes that have a bit of tooth feel (i.e.: al dente). Mushy oatmeal gives me the heebie-jeebies. Also, while I'm not a huge fan of whey protein's smell, I am a huge fan of protein. Whey allows for easy boost of the stuff.
I grew up in NW PA and ate oatmeal on a daily basis in the winter time. I love the sound of your recipe and cannot wait to try it. Thanks for sharing! :-)
Alek: Nope... Commercial flights almost always have hot water onboard. It's how they're able to make tea for those who request it.
Myself - after all the food and drink has been served - I just head on back to the galley area and start chatting up the flight attendants. After engaging in deep conversation for a few minutes, I show them my lil' plastic container of oatmeal and ask if I might have a bit of hot water for it.
They always end up asking for my recipe.

I think I'd do an assembly line of containers and make a week's worth at once and leave dry of course, and save opening all those containers on a daily basis..... You can pop one in your purse or nap sack as the case may be.... if you know you will be near a source of boiling water.... I would like to try adding coconut oil (also stable at room temperature) and chia seeds as well..... and hey Mr. Nasty.... you've got great skin... wonderful healthy complexion... Great recipe for hotel rooms that only come with a coffee pot. Run a pot of water through the coffee pot, then pour that over the oatmeal. Thanks for the recipe and the tip, can't wait to try it. I have done this at work and yes, it is the best ever!

I've made this a few times now & for oatmeal (not a fan of usually tho its my fav cookie, weird, I know) cuz of all the cool stuff u put in it & the ease of preparation, I must admit, it has changed my life... ever so slightly. i made oatmeal with milk, and added honey and organic virgin coconut oil and vanilla extract for flavor. pretty good but im still finding ways to make it taste so much better. might add cinnamon, few nuts & dried fruit next time. thanks for the vid!
I love the taste of agave syrup, but after reading a wide variety of articles about the product -- and reading up on its fructose content -- I've decided to avoid the stuff as much as possible (which is actually fairly easy to do).

Appreciate the response, I'll try what you said once, but I'd probably stick with just heating the milk and stirring it for 2-3 mins. Like it that way.

Heated almond milk works well, though it does have a tendency to separate in a kinda' weird way while cooking.
A tablespoon or so of coconut milk in the oatmeal tastes fantastic.
Funny... For the past fifteen years, I've been told that I'm a dead ringer for Richard Gere. Ironically, I actually met someone a while back who knows Richard Gere, and he told me that I look nothing at all like Mister Gere.
Having said that, I'd like to meet the guy. He was absolutely fantastic in the movie "Arbitrage."
I also use ginger, coriander, clove, nutmeg and flaxseed and or hempseed.. Eating Chai Oatmeal is a good way to get more healthful spices into our diet.

Thanks for the recipe... I never thought to put whey protein in my oatmeal (I used to make a whey protein shake after my morning workouts). I've been trying to find ways for my family and I to eat healthier- so I'm glad I came across your video!
BTW- I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with the fridge clutter! LOL : ) No matter how often I declutter the thing, more stuff ALWAYS makes it's way onto it! (I suppose having four kids doesn't help the situation)
I enjoy avocado in my smoothies... Total delicious awesomeness! Not quite sure how tasty it would be in oatmeal, though I'm certainly willing to give it a try.
My ego is rock solid. And -- YES -- I've been told thousands of times that I look like Richard Gere.
Steel cut oats with stevia or xylitol plus nuts, vanilla, no dried fruit into thermos overnight. Same effect, tastes better.
Chocolate would be just fine, though I often make my oatmeal with a teaspoon or two of raw cacao powder. Tastes great. Super, super healthy.
For long trips, especially where multiple airplane rides are involved, I'll pre-make three or four of the containers and bring them along with me in my carry-on. Works great.

Been doing pretty much this for years, i pack it for fishing, hiking, snowboarding, cycling. Sometimes ill hydrate it in a shaker so i have it ready. My serving is double of what you had. Expect to be thirsty and full of energy after a meal like that.

Kelline: Thanks for your concerns about my "Nasty" personality. In reality, I'm actually quite a pleasant person (or so I've been told). For the most part, it's just the photography products that my company makes -- the Nasty Clamps -- that have a Nasty reputation.
Now, regarding the whole matter of losing lots of viewers who might assume the worst, due to my Nasty name... Errrrrrrhhhh... This video is the most viewed oatmeal recipe on RUclips. I can't be losing too many folks.

If you want to make this a bit healthier and vegan, use Bob's Red Mill steel-cut oats or Scottish oatmeal, substitute date or coconut sugar (stevia or Trulia) or agave nectar for the sweetener, soy protein for the whey, and both Pyrex and Anchor Hocking have small glass containers with rubber lids so heated plastic will not leach into your food. You can pre-mix the spices to your liking as well and keep them in a separate jar. I've used dehydrated green apples, bananas, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, cranberries, coconut, dates, grapes, mangoes, peaches, persimmons, pineapple, raspberries and strawberries (all from Just Tomatoes online and no added preservatives in any of them). Nuts include walnuts, almonds, cashews and sometimes sunflower seeds (no salt added). This is a great idea for work, school or anywhere you have access to hot water. I also carry teabags with me in my favorite flavors. Just some suggestions, sir. And I'm 66 and a 2-time cancer survivor.

And chia seeds? They go into my smoothies.

I travel with oatmeal too ! try a teaspoon of chia seeds too- excellent source of nutrition and it helps you stay hydrated and blocks absorption of carbs- and I also use fig jam as my sweetener - no nuts- but I like the protein powder idea-why didnt I ever think of that ?

I totally agree with Mariel Lamb's "negative" comment. When you held up that little lidded bowl to cook the oatmeal in the thought of high heat releasing chemicals from the plastic quickly came to mind. Those are not meant to have boiling water in them I don't think, they're called "storage containers." But I still love your video--just found you by watching someone else's oatmeal recipe. Thank you again, I really like your ideas.

I'm also 50, I've eaten oatmeal, probably half my life, with almond milk of course, just took up paragliding 2 months ago, and headed to the Baja 1000 in Ensenada in November, so I consider myself pretty healthy. A person has to eat right, and I really cut back on the meat couple years ago, I think that may have helped also. Also, no sugar in oatmeal.
it does change your life because of the fact that oatmeal reduces cholesterol in the blood stream and gently scrapes your intestinal walls as it passes through, the benefit of this is superior performance in and out of the gym, because in all stressful situations our bodies abdominal area will tighten to hold our bodies straight , clean intestines allow this compressing without receiving pain signals from your stomach area.
I would either put it in a baggie and take it to work or put it in a anchor hocking glass container with lid.

I add enough hot water so that the dried ingredients (in a bowl) are covered by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water. Obviously, the amount of water added will determine just how moist the oatmeal ends up once rehydrated.
I have oatmeal with raw honey, raisins, chopped pecans, and throw in a little ground flax, nutritional yeast, maybe a tiny bit of coconut oil. You cannot taste the "healthy" stuff and it is really good for you. Really tasty and keeps you full a long time.

That's my question.
Why do I (and other people) add additional ingredients to their oatmeal? Well, the obvious answer is that additional ingredients add additional flavor. Pretty. Damn. Simple. Also, the things that I add to my oatmeal (pumpkin seeds, cranberries, cinnamon, etc...) contribute protein, anti-oxidents, and blood sugar regulators to the dish.
Calm down, mellow out, enjoy life, and eat your oatmeal.
Richard Gere, I was wondering how do you boil it when you're in the airplane?
Where are you going to get hot water on an airplane? I used to bring a similar thing to work. However I used maple sugar instead of brown sugar, and left out the spices. Instead of whey, I mixed in maybe 5 ml of homemade almond butter (blanched almonds). I also like to add some ground flax seed, and a bit of sesame oil, canola oil, or flax seed oil. To make it "cook" faster, I used 1-minute oats, and chopped the dried fruit into small pieces. Microwave 2 min. Control power to prevent boil-over.
Oh Goodgirl... I could have titled this: "The really convenient oatmeal recipe that tastes better than almost any other oatmeal recipe out there and is super easy to travel with and is loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber," but that probably wouldn't have caught your attention very well.

Regarding the whole Richard Gere thing, well, that's kinda' been a curse for me. I've actually been chased down the street in Darjeeling, India, by a small crowd of people yelling "Mr. Gere! Mr. Gere!" The funny thing is that -- when I grow my beard out and put on a baseball cap -- everyone thinks that I look like Steven Speilberg.
No need to drain the water. After about twenty minutes or so of sitting around, the oatmeal will absorb all the liquid, and you'll end up with perfectly cooked -- just slightly chewy -- grains. Honestly, this technique makes the best oatmeal imaginable.
Egg protein would work great also. As much as I love oatmeal (and I really do love it), I just don't feel as though it has nearly enough protein in it for someone who's as active as I am. Pumpkin seeds and walnuts can help... But the big protein boost that I like comes from adding some sort of protein powder to the whole mix. Whey protein, egg protein, hemp protein, rice protein... All work great, and all of them make me feel better.
I'm a fifty year old guy who eats a bowl of oatmeal (sometimes two) almost every day, and I'm nowhere close to being fat. In fact, the adorable Mrs. Nasty tells me that I might be just a bit too thin right now.
