Check Out This Massive Crotal Bell!

Mike and I are at it again metal detecting on the river. This video is the second part of our kayak adventure where we tried to float down the river but we were stopped by massive damage to the area from a tornado that ripped through the river bottom the night before our trip. We were forced to walk back upstream to the boat launch dragging the kayaks behind us so we took advantage of our situation and metal detected our way back upriver. We had some great finds including a massive crotal bell found by Mike.

I don't know if this was ever mentioned but crotal comes from the Greek "crotalon" which means rattle. So "crotal bell" describes a bell that rattles.

Crotal bells (Greek 'crotalon' - castanet or rattle) are various types of small bells or rattles used on draft and stock animals for various reasons.

Thanks to you, I now know what a crotal bell is. From what I've read, crotal bells go back before medieval times, where the term sleigh bell was used more often to describe the adornment of the sleighs at during the winter and Christmas. But there are a lot of definitions. Your choice. It really was fun to see how excited Mike was when he realized what he found!
