Can anyone help please? I've learnt this song In primary school in Ireland when I was young (I'm 42 now) What we learned repeated the question what will we do with the drunken sailor every verse and the sailor went through was shaved on his belly Put In scubbard (barrel) put In Captains daughter bed. She disappeared sailer put in crowes nest. Put in longboat and more. I remember it was a long song and we loved learning it The class would be hyped up and energetic and well go crazy.. But cannot find this full version anywhere. I've passed this so g on to my children But would love if anyone could help track down the Full version of it Before it gets lost and replaced by the commercial version. Any help Truly appreciated Thanks
There's not really a "full version" in the sense that you're thinking, because there isn't really a canon list of punishments, just a lot of improvised responses, some more popular than others for various reasons. I can't speak to what you learned in school or how you performed it, but it sounds like it was picked so every student could get a unique response, or possibly as memorization practice where the teacher was packing in as many lines as the class could remember to stretch you out, like "If you can remember 20 minutes worth of Drunken Sailor lines, you can remember 4 minutes of My Heart Will Go On." Though I absolutely agree: There needs to be a good long version of Drunken Sailor out there.
Yeah as per the reply below, you probably learned an invented version of the song. That's my thinking, because there were improvised versions of ballads I sung at primary school too. I'm afraid it's likely you'll have to track your old teachers down mate :)
