Being a boss is infinitely tougher than than just showing up and working for 8 hours and going home. Highly skilled/driven self employed people like Charlie should be rewarded for their efforts.
Teaching people comes at a cost! Knowledge is power! The apprentices will be paid at a cost of what they will learn in experiance. Charlie should be making money from these kids 💯. They are gaining valuable knowledge/experience through his time and effort. Without them, he would make 25% more, at least. There is less thinking involved, 100% less hassle absoloutly zero fuck ups. Simple as!
Exactly, I much prefer to be employed and do as I'm told over running the whole show. So ofc I'd expect them to be paid more than me. Do bosses pay shit sometimes, ofc, but we can look for another job.
Yeah it's easy BEING a boss (if you have the chops.) But either way, BECOMING a boss is the hard part nepotism aside. No apologies should be given for those who worked through boot soles to get to where they are.
Your a good upstanding young man who has integrity and a fantastic attitude to working. Its a pity there aren't more out there like you. Aswell as that your highly training your young crew to a very high standard. I wish I had a mentor like you when I was an apprentice. Keep up the good way of living my friend.
Listen mate could not have said it better, if you don’t price the work, if you don’t chase the work, if you don’t do a good job, then there is no work... not to mention the hrs no one sees that you don’t get paid for.... keep on trucking mate 💪💪💪
Hi Charlie hope your well and good! I’m 23 and I don’t think any one understands the passion I have for bricklaying. Been doing it since I was 16 and had to learn fast as I moved out of home at 16. I’ll tell you now I would work for free with you because the knowledge you have is priceless! I’ve asked before but please could I join you even if it’s for one day! I’m not a messer and always turn up and give my everything. I’d work 7 days if I could. I’ve learnt from an old boy who use to be foreman for heigh towers so I know what it takes. Really would appreciate just one day on the trowel with you ! Thanks hope to hear back
Don’t let the arm chair critics wear you down mate. I’m getting back to my pond on Sunday and watching your videos just makes me wish I did brick laying when I left school!
Charlie hats off to you bro. People don’t realise how tough it is being a boss. I had my own business in a well know courier company. Stress got too much working 15 hour days when people phoned in sick etc. mrs wasn’t happy kids never saw me. Went back to being just myself and I’m earning nearly as much but without all the stress. Keep doing you bro 😎
Totally agree Charlie. It’s 4.05am on a Saturday morning. And I’m awake! Thinking about what needs doing next week, I have 3 sites to manage at the moment and so to man manage and keep clients happy is a priority in my opinion to running a successful business. Keeping morale up in a business is so important. If the boss has a bad day because of X Y & Z then the workforce will have a bad day and it starts a domino effect.
Charlie, no truer words said mate. Your work force should be grateful for you being the person you are cos there's a lot of subbies pleading poverty every week when it comes to paying the blokes wages. Keep going Charlie and you'll be fine
Hi Charlie mate, I totally understand what you say! I own a bricklaying company and I had an apprentice, I lost out on money because of things he didn’t want to do (his face test to qualify, lost motivation, was always late for work ect, and I had to let him go, now I am on my own I enjoy my work again, it’s hard employing people, keep up the good work we are in this together 💪
i agree with everything you say mate. i work as a long term subby for a prestigious carpentry company in Brighton and my 'boss', although doing well, works 15hr days and is constantly stressed, with the phone ringing every 5 minutes. He loves to be on the tools but can barely put his pouch on before getting called away. hats off to ya, its a tough game.
I’m an apprentice for my dad and this is exactly what’s happening to him mate. The sacrifices they take to keep people in work and make things run smooth is unreal. Although that bloke you’re talking about may be a dick sometimes, maybe even a lot of the time, but he deserves nothing but respect and I’m sure he’s a very good man. I know this because from what you’re describing it reminds me a lot of my dad. Of course it’s completely different trades as my dad is a brickie and your “boss” as you said is a carpenter but it’s all the same bs at the end of the day just different trades. Your comment and this video from Charlie has opened my eyes a lot tbh and made me find some very deserved respect for my dad so I appreciate that. All the best mate!
I don't get these people who care what other people earn, if I earn what I'm happy with then that's all that matters, coming from a price work joiner that likes the videos, keep smashing it out
Planning, preparation, organisation, team building, team hiring, team relations, customer relations. Some people have advertising or social media. Then on top of that you roll with the day to day punches. Pay your workers, pay their tax, pay their insurance, pay your insurance. Pay for any business related expenses, tools, transport etc etc. Plus we do the work on top of it all. These are the things joe blow forgets to consider before he starts assuming you make all the money. Keep it up Charlie. We love ya videos mate. One business owner to another. 🔥
crazy it even needs to be said, You could put 20k in someones bank and say okay mate all yours run the business, pay the lads, fuel the vans, cover the insurance and enjoy being a rich man. Bankrupt in 3 months guarenteed!
Spot on Charlie lad. A lot of people dont see nor understanding what goes in to planning. Whilst your lads are sat at home you're conducting site visits, measuring up, liasing with new clients,. Then when grafting all the considerations your have. Small minded a lot people, only ever see the tip of the iceburg.
Totally get you, glad you've brought this up!! People don't get how to run a business and the expense side of things. It's not always rosy and it's hard bloody work - often better to work for someone half the time!!
Wtf has it got to do with anyone what you earn your a business if you don’t make money you wouldn’t be in business . It’s hard running a gang of lads and keeping working coming in and everyone happy. Keep it up love it
They haven't got a clue mate. Waking up at 3am and not being able to get back to sleep because all you have is work bouncing round in your head. Every evening, every weekend, on a rare occasion when everything goes right and you coin in its ok but most of the time your thinking is this shit really worth it.
Watched you from the start Charlie, and I dont think it's anyone's dam business what the hell you earn and what you pay your staff. Keep up the great work, love your vids ❤
Hi, Boss Man charlie, and to all the other bosses out there knowledge is power ,u love what you do , at the end of the day u feel that power, so own your power off knowledge no money can't give you that, keep up the good work brother
The workers always just see the good side of being a boss and never think about the bad side. A lot of people think everything just falls into your lap too 🤣
Charlie your on the money lad running a crew is hard going all the pressure on your shoulders. The constant thinking of how to run the job efficiently making sure money is in for the lads it's easy for people to think the boss is making a fortune but we work twice as hard for it
As a viewer that watches for the entertainment and does not work in construction the fact that your small team turns up day in day out and all seem to have a laugh whilst grafting speaks volumes.
Well said Charlie I’m a boss myself of a building company they don’t see all the pricing, paperwork and constant bills and wages to pay especially when we’re on the tools aswell.
5:00 - 6:15 is extremely well said a lot of people don't get that they get to go home after an 8 or so hr work day, well the boss if they are on the tools as well after a full work day gets to go and work more but on the business side of things.
they are very lucky to be working for you.having a masterclass on how it should be done ! you should be earning big money because like you said you've earned it over the years.takes years to get where you are.
Great words Charlie, I echo all of what you’ve said. Ps also you have to deal with the customers & site agents, building control etc . Pity you’re not in Norwich lol 💪🏼👌.
Don’t justify yourself to the narcissistic culture we live in. Respect is earned. you give people work for themselves or there family. You don’t need to justify yourself. 👊🏻
Im not a builder but i love your channel. What i am though is an employer. The buck with everthing stops me. When somebody is sick we pick up the slack. I organise all the legals , i do all the planning etc... like charlie said you have days when you dont earn and some days when you earn a lot and that's the reward for putting it on the line. Boo to the haters
Tell them Charlie boi. Auld boy said he’s liking the tunes 😆. See your Blake’s box section does yours have 2-3 penny size like adjusters on yours ? Have them not use yet but they have them looks like so can adjust profile if needed.
Don't know why you feel you have to explain yourself as noones business but you're own,you seem like a good boss and treat them well, have a great weekend 👍
Just discovered you on RUclips lad really enjoy your videos I'm an Irish carpenter living in San Francisco just went out on my own everything you say is true 👍
Lol people have no clue what is like to be the boss. All they see is to good day and the big money. Never see all the over head that bosses have. Plus the stress of making sure everything is right. Keep grinding brother! I'm gonna have to head that way soon and work with ya!!! Love to put some brick and block down for ya brother!!!
100% correct about the money C - being a boss dont stop at 5pm your doing stuff paperwork ordering for another few hours when you get home - Ive been on both sides I worked longer harder and had little or NO days off or sick pay !!
Glad you said that stuff at the start @CharlieCollison - the haters in the comments are getting boring. You’re getting paid for what you do with pricework. People want to earn more, then do more. On top of working bloody hard, you’re training your people, paying them a wage, running a business and feeding your family in hard financial times. All while making videos that are great to watch. It’s not like you rock up in a Bentley for an hour every other day. You put the work in and carry the stress that comes with being the boss. Fair play to you.
You are spot on Charlie it’s hard work knowledge is key you never switch off you deserve every penny nobody gives you anything in this game keep the videos going so peopl can understand like you said if it was easy everyone would be doing it some people need to have a few days on them 6inch blocks wet blocks I might ad should be banned
Divide the hours you have to put in including organising the work, speaking to clients, thinking about jobs after work, rectifying problems, your not really much better off than someone on day rate, the bigger the responsibility the bigger pay should be, less stress less money that’s how business works
Exactly !! Its bloody tough going, some days your fighting for payment, yet you've still got Bill's and wages that need paying. Now on top you've got tax ni and vat regardless !!! So anyone who talks otherwise mate is talking shit ! It's long days well after ya employees have gone home, and stress is horrific!! So good on ya mate.
Charlie it is nobody's business son,we dont get to switch off.Good on you and keep doing it.I make a lot of money about 70k is the average, but we dont stop for a second, one break and go like a train for 7 hours.I have been keeping an eye on you Charlie, let the haters fuckin try it.Cheers Stevie
I ran my own small building business for 28 yrs working 65 hrs a week regularly Estimating, invoicing, bookwork etc . Days graft then office work till late . Packed it in 2017 went back to site work and made more money with zero stress . But the site work is going downhill rapidly at the moment so I am going to give day rate work a go ? At 61 I think I’ve earned the right to slow down a bit ?
Being a boss is always more complicated, you are in charge of everything...the bricklayers just arrive, do their job and leave, the boss takes care of everything and sees how he does it....
I got told off an old boss once. You never really make it until you have been bust because then you know what not to do, Things like going out with your Bank manager but you are paying for it
Do you know what I’m glad i watched this video and I’m glad you made it. I’m only 4 mins in and it’s completely opened my eyes to the business side of things and how much you earn it makes a lot more sense to me now and you’re right it isn’t my business at the end of the day but you put it out there on RUclips for people to watch so and I’m interested so it’s kind of made to be my business because you let it 😂. I just don’t understand how you put 1000 bricks in a wall and 200 blocks on a decent day, in your words. I feel like this must be absolutely perfect condition working and obviously is you being amazing at your job. It is very hard to believe mate and I think you understand that but you do sometimes paint an unrealistic picture for people to what it’s actually like. Like for example that video where you’re as teaching those beginners the basics of the trowel and laying. You told them a good brickie puts in a thousand bricks and makes 70p to a pound a brick. Realistically that never happens and will be very rare. You made out they would make up to a grand that day just like that but as you said in this video yourself it ain’t all that smooth sailing. I love what you’re doing promoting the trade and everything but with your platform I think you need to watch what you’re saying a bit because it’s painting an unrealistic picture of those who are just beginning and making big life choice on what they want to do for a living. You’re doing amazing work tho mate and I respect It all non the less. I’d love to meet you in person one time and actually put in a graft with you on site to experience what you actually do and learn from easily one of the best brickies about to my knowledge. It would also just be cool af and astounding to watch someone put 1000 brick in a wall in a day because doing domestic work myself I’ll be lucky to see or lay myself one brick a lot of days. Keep it up mate and I wish you the best with what you’re doing!
I also agree being a boss can be hard work what you earn is no one business,I run my painting and decorating company for twenty seven years organising jobs and crew was hard work now I put my feet up finally retired.
I like to skim-butter last block that goes in the course on both sides. Won't fold in perp mortar. Probably my OCD shows there. In any case im not a bricklayer. I just say I am.
I agree with everything you say Charlie I worked for myself for years in my younger days I am not a brickie, everyone thinks you’re a millionaire working for yourself you just get a bit of money together then some twat is ready to take it off you.
Secondly mate haters hate I’m here for the working man and getting as much as you can while you can.... while trying to pay as little to the government as they can...
If only people who complain about the boss knew the stress that comes with it. Trying to get new customers and retain the existing, not too mention the corporation Tax, PAYE, the Filing and paperwork for VAT filing, paying the accountant/book keeping, The public liability insurance and the professional indemnity insurance etc the list could go on for ages. Not as easy as just being a boss.
Being a boss is infinitely tougher than than just showing up and working for 8 hours and going home. Highly skilled/driven self employed people like Charlie should be rewarded for their efforts.

Charlie no explanation needed. Your a 1st class brickyard. From old Irish bricklayer.
Listen mate could not have said it better, if you don’t price the work, if you don’t chase the work, if you don’t do a good job, then there is no work... not to mention the hrs no one sees that you don’t get paid for.... keep on trucking mate 💪💪💪

Make it happen Charlie!
@@clivedavo appreciate the support 👍🏻
If you ever come to Toronto let me know. I've been laying bricks, block and stone for 25 years

Youre a top boss from what i can see youve taught me alot since watching you best bricky ive ever heard of
, Charlie I was a boss for 35 years, how right you are, doing the job is the easy bit, it's all the other s*** that comes with it 👍🍻

Its strength of character to be self employed.....the harder you work the more people are jealous.....keep it up mate! Video's are really cool.
Totally agree Charlie, what you and your staff earn is between you and your staff. Every one seems to be happy, that speaks volumes👍
I don't get these people who care what other people earn, if I earn what I'm happy with then that's all that matters, coming from a price work joiner that likes the videos, keep smashing it out

Oh yeah! These as well.

Charlie, your words resonate with me. I can relate to the challenges of being a business owner.
Totally get you, glad you've brought this up!! People don't get how to run a business and the expense side of things. It's not always rosy and it's hard bloody work - often better to work for someone half the time!!

In a nutshell, WELL FUCKING SAID SON! 👍🏻
They haven't got a clue mate. Waking up at 3am and not being able to get back to sleep because all you have is work bouncing round in your head. Every evening, every weekend, on a rare occasion when everything goes right and you coin in its ok but most of the time your thinking is this shit really worth it.
They are only haters through pure jealousy.. keep up the good work, lad
You work hard for what u want and put yourself in a position to earn I know it's not easy but end can be rewarding , keep it up
Watched you from the start Charlie, and I dont think it's anyone's dam business what the hell you earn and what you pay your staff. Keep up the great work, love your vids ❤

You are so right worked crew for years many times they made as much or more as I. Especially accounting for extra work
Well said Charlie boy , also the stress of making sure you've got enough work to keep other guy's in a wage.
experience is priceless kids not want 2 get hands dirty these days
Loving your videos can’t get enough atm 🎉
It was good this one, wasn’t it?
The workers always just see the good side of being a boss and never think about the bad side. A lot of people think everything just falls into your lap too 🤣
7:15 Chill out ,whos pissed on your shoes today😆👷👷
Charlie your on the money lad running a crew is hard going all the pressure on your shoulders. The constant thinking of how to run the job efficiently making sure money is in for the lads it's easy for people to think the boss is making a fortune but we work twice as hard for it
Great video Charlie you didn’t need to explain how much money you earn it is no one’s business and you work your nut’s off
As a viewer that watches for the entertainment and does not work in construction the fact that your small team turns up day in day out and all seem to have a laugh whilst grafting speaks volumes.

About running a business, exactly no one knows what we do to keep jobs running, or bidding jobs to keep them busy
You seem genuine and a very fair boss, look after your team and they will respect you👍👍
Fecking right Charlie, ignore the haters, not easy sometimes running a business, take the rough with the smooth and all that !
they are very lucky to be working for you.having a masterclass on how it should be done ! you should be earning big money because like you said you've earned it over the years.takes years to get where you are.
Nothing to explain. You price the work, you win the work, you run the job, you employ people and pay the bills.

Think thats the first time I’ve seen a radio on site with you mate ?
Tom is a lucky man to be under your wing, wish I could work with you but always learning tips off your videos keep smashing it ££

Fair play Charlie, its no duck walk.....keep doing what your doing pal...
Any footage on that exstention with the dodgy scaffold being finished be good to see👍
Charlie just one quick question, what gazebo are you using mate that’s sufficient for my team what would you recommend?
Glad you said that stuff at the start @CharlieCollison - the haters in the comments are getting boring. You’re getting paid for what you do with pricework. People want to earn more, then do more.

Hi Charlie where do you get the work trousers from
This is exactly how a boss feels .

Shouldnt have to say f*ck all mate. "You wear the stress lines on your forehead" You do what you gotta do.
I don’t plead poverty , as he sits there pleading poverty
Exactly right nobody's business and don't seem like your crew is unhappy either
I'm with you brother I found could earn more on my own but obviously not going up as quickly as a gang it's tough being self employed
Did You cut those 440mm long "briquettes" blocks down to 65mm from blocks? Ive never seen them before.
No they come like that mqre
“ go home and play with your todger “ 🤣🤣
Bang on Charlie you’re the man doing all the main stuff
really enjoy watching you, maybe you should look at building your own houses, thats what I did and its the way forward

I also agree being a boss can be hard work what you earn is no one business,I run my painting and decorating company for twenty seven years organising jobs and crew was hard work now I put my feet up finally retired.
just wait till the stress hits you with overwork and you will be skipping to the ambulance seen it so many times before
Some huge sweeping generalisations there chap.
When you get a bit older, hopefully you get a bit wiser 👍
Your right mate, it's no one's business. How much you earn has nothing to do with anyone else
I like to skim-butter last block that goes in the course on both sides. Won't fold in perp mortar. Probably my OCD shows there. In any case im not a bricklayer. I just say I am.
Seen it done it. Im 20 years older and i would only say step up to contractor or step down to 1 n1. The money doesnt change much at 1 n1 or 1 n 3
I agree with everything you say Charlie I worked for myself for years in my younger days I am not a brickie, everyone thinks you’re a millionaire working for yourself you just get a bit of money together then some twat is ready to take it off you.
I clicked to see how much a Boss earns, but you are right,it’s none of my fucking business.😂
Lol i was a hoddy for 27yrs and my dad a bricklayer for over 45 yrs and no matter how many times i worked with him id never ever ask what he earnt.
Secondly mate haters hate I’m here for the working man and getting as much as you can while you can.... while trying to pay as little to the government as they can...
Whats happened to Stu Compton then ?
Good at my Job 💯 bang on Charlie 👍
You forgot to mention that you pull in the work aswell! Your contacts your work! Finding the work for a team is not easy.
The effort with bricklaying is the best
Great shit Charlie
I'm 60 now and would rather work for someone hourly no headaches 😊
Charlie your a good guy not that many about wish you all the best you work hard for everything you have 👍
Work to live ...don't live for work ..😊
If only people who complain about the boss knew the stress that comes with it.
