This song, with lyrics in German, is about the classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Mozart was a child prodigy who performed his first musical tour at the age of five. His last three years were his most successful and he had an extremely excessive lifestyle. The basic concept is the suggestion that Mozart was the rock 'n 'roll rebel of his day. Some of the lyrics in "Rock Me Amadeus" reflect this. Here's an English translation:
He was the first punk ever to set foot on this earth
He was a genius from the day of his birth
He could play the piano like a ring and a bell
And everybody screamed: Come on, rock me Amadeus
With a bottle of wine in one hand and a woman in the other
His mind was on rock and roll and having fun
Because he lived so fast he had to die so young
But he made his mark in history
Still everybody says: Rock me Amadeus
Falco's real name was Johann Holzel. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1957, he was an established artist in German-speaking territories long before "Rock Me Amadeus" was released, but it was his first huge international hit. In most countries it was also his only hit, but he continued to have success in mainland Europe. Falco ended up a tax exile and died in a car crash in February 1998 at age 40

As an Austrian, I have to say it's always nice to see English-speaking people reacting to musicians from my home country. Falco's music is an integral part of Austrian culture and it will never be forgotten. He sang many songs in both German and English and was the only Austrian to reach number 1 on the Billboard with a song in German (Rock me Amadeus). Thank you for your great reaction. There is so much that could be said about Falco. And it is almost an act of cynicism that the first really big hit by a virtuoso Austrian is about another virtuoso Austrian.
Falco was a man who concealed his sensitivity and excessive vulnerability to the outside world with an exaggerated dose of arrogance. He not only acted like a snob, he also spoke like one.
Yet Falco was a very sensitive person who had a great sense of humor and also possessed the highly likeable gift of self-irony. He knew how to have fun and he could also laugh at himself. This is proven by a whole series of television clips that lie dormant in the archives of Austrian state television.
Unfortunately, Falco, a man who was admired by so many other people, who was undeniably one of the greatest and most visionary musicians in Austrian history, could never accept himself. He suffered from the idea that he was not good enough. He was literally consumed by self-doubt.
A vulnerable spirit, a sensitive soul who sought salvation by numbing his fear and anxiety with alcohol and cocaine.
Falco broke himself. His tragic death in an accident at the age of 40 was the sad conclusion to a life that produced so many incomparable things, but was unable to save itself.
      I am also Austrian.

I don't think it is accurate to portray the message of _'99 Luft/Red Balloons'_ to be "completely different" depending on the language version that you listen to.
I find it to be essentially the same from being in West Germany when this came out & knowing some of the natives in her fan base.
Perhaps recent interpretations have taken on a new spin 40 years down the road.

the austrian singer Falco, was extravagant, provocativ like Mozart.
When Falco emerged in Austria, it was a musical "revolution": he played in alternative bands in Vienna as a bass player, then in one of these bands he performed only one song, as an interlude "Ganz Wien"; he was then spotted on stage by a producer because of his interpretation and his charisma; this song caused a scandal ( them of drugs) but was at the same time a huge success with the youth.
in 1981, his first international success was "Der Kommissar", then in 1985 "Rock me Amadeus": in front of the infatuation of the youth for him and his international success, he was the 1st artist of current music to be authorized to play in front of the prestigious place of the Town hall of Vienna in opening of festival in May 1985 (video excerpt on you tube).
Until then, this place was reserved for classical music.
With "Rock me Amadeus", he was n.1 in the USA in 1986 for several weeks. He almost moved to the USA, met Afrika Bambataa who considered him the first white rapper. But Falco was really afraid, did not feel comfortable in this huge system, and could not leave his country of origin.
He said, with his sense of humor which hided many inner problems : "My favorite part of the American flag are the red and white stripes", the colours of the austrian flag..
Subject to anxiety and mood swings that worsened over the years; he never managed to get away from cocaine, whiskey and drugs for good. His personal life suffered. He led a chaotic life and died prematurely in a violent car accident in the Dominican Republic in 1998, where he had lived since 1996.
Some of the bikers of the clip "Rock me Amadeus" carried his coffin to his funeral in the central cemetery of Vienna (it is the most visited tomb).
In this clip, he makes Mozart a rocker; he said of him : "if Mozart lived now, he would play the guitar"; the social codes, the times are shaken, as Falco has done a lot.
Falco also gives another meaning to his expression "rock me Amadeus" when he addresses all these enamored women around him...
    Falco was a litlle "rascal"!
Falco invented his own language, a mixture of languages, speech and song for which terms such as the "Manhattan Schönbrunnerdeutsch", the "Austro-denglish" or "the World-rap, " the Falconisch" are used in Austrian.
(The clip was made in the baroque Auersperg Palace in Vienna; in March 1786, it was the venue for a private performance of Mozart's opera 'Idomeneo".
Hello from a french fan of Mozart and Falco.

💥💥"Rock Me Amadeus" is a song recorded by Austrian musician Falco, for his third studio album, Falco 3 (1985). The single was made available for physical sale in 1985 in German-speaking Europe, through A&M. "Rock Me Amadeus" was written by Falco along with Dutch music producers Bolland & Bolland. To date, the single is the only German language song to peak at number one of the Billboard Hot 100, which it did on 29 March 1986.[2]
It topped the singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic. It was Falco's only number one hit in both the United States and the United Kingdom, despite the artist's popularity in his native Austria and much of Europe.
💥💥Originally recorded in German, the song is about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, his popularity and his debts. A longer version (eight minutes), named the "Salieri Mix", appeared on the initial US release of the album Falco 3. The song was inspired by the movie Amadeus. For the US release, the song was remixed with an English background overlay. There was never a full English version

Amadeus is MOZART (the late 18th century composer). His full name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.... he is widely regarded as the original "rock star".
Long story short, his music pushed the boundaries of his time and fun fact: his music had lyrics! But, by the standards of the times.... they were considered so filthy and perverse that he wasn't allowed to sing them! lol!! That being said, he had a rebellious spirit. That earned him A LOT of attention and affection from everyone.... esp. the ladies! lol!!
While he was ostracized by the "elite/authorities".... he was adored by many just like Rock Stars today. He spoke for the people and liked to push the boundaries!! Hence the hook "Rock Me Amadeus".... he knew how to shake shit up! lol!!!😜 Great reaction guys!!❤

He was an Austrian singer. There was a movie out around this time about classic composer "Amadeus", or his full name Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart born 1756 and died in 1791. It is said that Falco was inspired to write this song because of the movie. He is singing in German, so I don't know what he is saying either. LOL Its more like a dance song anyway. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was basically a rock star in his day. He lived fast, died young, was hugely popular, and made some of the most familiar music we still know today. A child prodigy, he was also a bit of a stunted personality...a man-child with immense talent as a musician and as a composer, starting his musical career before he was 10 years old. He was also a bit of a wreck with finances and relationships. An excellent background to help you understand Mozart is a film that came out around the same time as this song. 'Amadeus' (1984) is a film based on a stage play about Mozart and his life as told by a "rival" named Antonio Salieri, who in his old age claims that he killed Mozart. It is a brilliant and beautiful film that won tons of awards including the Oscars for Best Picture, Actor, Director, and Screenplay. The only thing I will say is that it is not entirely historically accurate...the playwright and screenwriter Peter Shaffer took a fair amount of liberties with Mozart and Salieri, their lives, and the events surrounding Mozart's death at age 35. Shaffer, himself, called it a "fantasia on the theme of Mozart and Salieri".
Falco was basically playing with the concept of a modern rock star in the past, and Mozart in the present in the video. In his own country of Austria, Falco was a low-level star when this song came out...and became huge after the song was released. Some other bangers he did...' Vienna Calling', 'Jeanny', 'Junge Roemer' and 'Der Kommisar' (This one was so popular that a band called After the Fire released an English language version that sounds like Falco did the singing).
There was a version of this song that had a voice-over that told the listener some facts about Mozart during an instrumental break, which was usually played on the radio...the video version is basically the version on the album 'Falco 3'. There were also a couple of other mixed versions as well. The song was HUGE when I was 13 in 1985...at one point, not actually knowing German, I could do the full song.
Great reaction...and I bet you'll be humming this for a few days, no matter what you do!

All the previous comments have said Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a child protege and incredibly famous in his day as well as prolific. Not only did he write many classic pieces, he also wrote operas such as "the Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni". He eventually received patronage from Emperor Joseph II but died at the age of 35. The whole fusing together is to demonstrate that Mozarts music is timeless and inclusive. He wrote beautiful music that still inspires today. He was the rock star of 1700’s and his works have stood the test of time. It’s basically a tribute song. I loved it the first time I heard it on it’s release date and I love it still. Great song! Thanks! ❤️🙏😇

Falco (real name - Johann Holzel) was from Austria... he scored this international hit in 1985 without English lyrics. He was rapping about Austrian classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who lived in the 1700's and died young. He was basically saying that Amadeus was popular and all the women wanted him... They were dressed up like 1700's 'high society' and he was depicting how Mozart would likely appeal like a rock star in that era to the biker fans 😂
Tragically, Falco died young as well - he passed away in 1998 in an auto accident.

    Translation to English from German:
    Uh, rock me Amadeus
    [Part 1]
He was a punk and lived in the big city
It was in Vienna, in Vienna, where he did everything
He had debts because he drank, but women all loved him anyway
And everybody screamed: "Come and rock me Amadeus!"
He was a superstar, he was popular
He was exalted, because he had flair
He was a virtuoso, he was a rock idol
And everybody screamed: "Come and rock me Amadeus!"
    [Hook]
    Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus - oh, oh, oh - Amadeus
    Come and rock me Amadeus!
    Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus, Amadeus - oh, oh, oh - Amadeus
    [Part 2]
It was around 1780 and it was in Vienna
No plastic money any more, the banks were against him
Everyone knew where the debts came from
He was a ladies' man, women loved his punk
He was a superstar, he was popular
He was too exalted, and that was his flair
He was a virtuoso, he was a rock idol
And everybody's still screaming: "Come and rock me Amadeus!"

Falcon was a huge Singer in Europe! This song was huge in America in the 80's! in fact, he was the only foreign singer, in history, whose main language was German, to score a vocal number 1 hitin the United States! A couple years before this song he had anotner little rap hit called "Der Kommisar", also sung in German! Thats a fun song too!! (i think, well, kinda remember, he did an American language version of the song but from what i remember, it wasnt as good as the German version.... Maybe im completely wrong about that, cause i wass like 11 or so when Kommisar came out) He was an Austrian singer who died tragically at 41 from a violent car crash when his car collided with a big bus! Just one of those artists that, to me, songs were all part of making growing up in the 80's a memorable time! I really think the music of the 80's was some of the best cause no matter what genre you liked, there were some amazing songs and groups in those genres!! And with the birth of Mtv, no matter if u lived in a big city or small town u could hear and see all these amazing bands and songs and also get to hear songs from other genres that you most likely would never have heard! For me, rap was something new to me which I loved (Run DMC, Beasties Boys, etc) and many other Genres! Thanks Falco for giving me a well rounded music experience growing up!

    Translation from the German:
He was the first punk ever to set foot on this earth
He was a genius from the day of his birth
He could play the piano like a ring and a bell
And everybody screamed: Come on, rock me Amadeus
With a bottle of wine in one hand and a woman in the other
His mind was on rock and roll and having fun
Because he lived so fast he had to die so young
But he made his mark in history
Still everybody says: Rock me Amadeus

Mozart's music is a bit like the rock band Queen...you may think you don't know his music, but you will have grown up hearing it! For starters, if you have ever seen the comedy film 'Trading Places' with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd, the opening music is the Overture to 'The Marriage Of Figaro', an opera by Mozart. Another of his pieces 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' is arguably one of the most famous pieces of classical music in the world, you would have heard it on TV ads, movies and even possibly while on hold for a company on the phone! It's used everywhere! And yeah...watch the movie 'Amadeus', it's great! :-)

Wolfgang Mozart Amadeus was widely accepted in the aristocracy as a once in a lifetime musical genius. This fame for him began when at the age of 5 it is said he composed Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. However, he was also somewhat of a rebel always bucking the trends and normalities of both high society and the conventional musical wisdom of the period. Maybe that's where the bikers fit in...idk for sure. Always loved the best even if like you Asia I wasn't really sure of the whole concept mainly because I don't speak German haha!! When this came out in the early 80s it was whackadoo! But I kind of took it to mean there was some time travel involved. Old-school Wolfgang Amadeus (the famous composer) was transported to the future and presided over the court of "today's" bikers and today's incarnation composer (Falco) presided over old-school peeps from Amadeus' original time. They were both holding court!

Falco was one of the first German-speaking artists to incorporate elements of rap, electronica, punk, and a few other genres all in his own individual unique style. Amadeus refers to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you found this intriguing, check out Peter Fox's 'Alles ist Neu'. Fox is another German artist who has a really unique style that incorporates different genres of music, but 'German Rap' is at the core of it, although if you're familiar with classical music at all, you'll definitely hear Shostokovich's 'Leningrad Symphony' in Fox's music.
