    Being a long-time audio repair tech, here's a tip: most of the swotch contacts, relay contacts and the male Jones plugs can be cleaned with a pencil eraser (ink erasers are slightly more abrasive and work best). Draftsman's erasers, like Stadler, Faber etc, work extremely well for this. Theyll remove oxides without scoring, scratching or removing metal. You can shave the tip with a razor blade into a thin wedge to fit between the contacts. A powered eraser with eraser rods is often helpful too.

      Unfortunately I don't get too many Gottlieb's in, I was just thinking about that earlier, I don't know why that is. It could be A. they didn't make as many of them (I don't think that's it) or B. They still all work so nobody sells them or has me fix them (I wouldn't think that's it) or C. they're more desirable to collectors, so the collectors have already bought them all up around here (that may be it)
      I'm sure I'll get more in but I don't have any in the queue , I do own a few that are complete basket cases that will come in eventually. I have a rusted up old "Grand Slam" that they repainted the entire playfield with chalk paint on (I THINK it will come off.....).... and I may have another one or two somewhere. I really like the Gottlieb's too, I like all of theirs even the System 80 and System 1, System 3 stuff. Love it.

      I can say that whenever I’ve completely done a Gottlieb woody or wedge head, they have never given me an once of trouble. They are 100 per cent reliable, and are indestructible with normal care. Pinball is a result of 2 opposing forces: on one hand the companies needed them to be cheap cheap cheap …. on the other hand they were designed to never break down. a broken pinball makes no money, so the makers tried very hard to make them go forever. That’s why so many have survived all these years, often with no help or servicing. They remain one of the marvels of the 20th century. Power to you, Ronnie.

    For 12v and 5/6v bulbs you could rebuild a circuit to replace it using something similar to an automotive flasher/blinker circuit. It would be fairly easy to replicate something digitally as well that would blink a standard bulb. You can tune the circuit to mimic the bulb type that you are trying to replace and could even build a master board that drives several of them at different blink intervals that you control via variable resistor. There are schematics online that can be used/modified for the purpose. As these bulbs get harder to find it may be a good option =)
    That same circuit could be adapted to actuate those relays/solenoids on a blink basis =)

  • @kevtris
    @kevtris 2 года назад +2

    the 6V bulb is in series with the coil though, so it won't get all of that 53V. depending on the coil's current it could only see a few volts. I really like the idea of using a flashing bulb as a timer. they were thinking out of the box on that one. the middle blade on the bulb that the filament is attached to is a bimetallic strip, and the filament is directly welded to it, so it will conduct the heat to the strip and make it bend. It works like an oldschool thermostat. They used to be super common on christmas light sets, but apparently not any more with the advent of electronics.

    Every time I see you working on one of these EMs all I can think is that the future is in the past. Digital goes bad, not just anyone can fix it with the tools a normal person usually keeps. Electric Mechanical though, everything is visible and repairable. Patience, above all other traits, would win the day. I feel the same way when my neighbor drives by in his '68 Dodge pickup; no digital in that old beast and he says he wouldn't have it any other way. Everyone's given up reliability for convenience, and I believe they're going to regret it. Sorry about that; didn't mean to rant. Anyway. Have a wonderful day and a better tomorrow.

    Yeah, that's a blinker bulb. So it has an internal thermostat and acts as a thermal-based oscillator. But that is neat, being able to use a blinker bulb as a low-frequency oscillator.
    And a buzzer is a magnetic-based oscillator. So you can connect a relay coil through the N.C. contacts, and if you want to slow the buzzing that creates, one could put an electrolytic across the coil.
    Bar Keeper's Friend is another polish. It comes in a can much like scouring powder, but rather than containing the usual mixture of chlorine and grit, it uses oxalic acid. And for copper, stainless steel, and maybe aluminum, and a couple more metals, it does a pretty good job removing tarnish.

  • @PlumGurly
    @PlumGurly 2 года назад

    Another use for bimetallic strips is in light-based relays. What those do is connect the photocell to a tiny coil that heats a bimetallic strip. So the light keeps the coil heated to keep the lights turned off. This approach also adds up to a 30-second delay or so due to the latency of the heat (working much like a capacitor). That has an advantage where falling leaves or something won't cause automatic lights to flicker or blink.

    Relay logic timers are interesting. In old relay elevator controllers they sometimes use selenium rectifiers (to make dc) and capacitors in series with the relay coil so when the cap is charged enough the coil lets go. And those caps pack a punch if they bite you before the controller discharges them, lols. I dont mess with elevators but I have three relay controllers, for fun.

      This is one of the more interesting controllers. Much larger relays then the controllers I saved from going to the scrap yard. The ones I have use about 125 relays per car for 8 floors, almost all are identical 3 pull double throw. They call it an ice cube tray. It has one 8 'bit' register for the car calls and two 7 'bit' registers for the up and down calls. Some doubled-up relays (coils connected in parallel). Positioning was done with a car-top selector 'follower' driven by small cables in the shaft. I got a good look the controller while it was still in service, 30 years and going strong... except not for the hydraulic pumps. The pistons did leak and the pumps would starve and destroy themselves. I think I heard 8 floor hydraulic elevators are not common for a reason.

    (I don't know anything, this is coming from a novice trying to understand.) That spider stepper puzzles me. Four of the blades remain in contact with the same traces no matter what step the device is on. If those four connections (whatever they do) are always on, why connect them through the spider at all? Why aren't they just hard wired?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 года назад +1

      Those four blades are connected (on some they're not all connected together though) but the whole purpose of it is, when you turn it, it's now connected to something else. The traces don't go all the way around, some of them change every step. So think of it like say, a plus sign on the board. When the spider is connecting those four spots together, you're sending power to the 1st players score reels....
      Then it turns one spot, and now the plus sign is touching four different spots, that have different wires going to them. So now the power is connecting to the 2nd players score reels.
      So it's different on every stepper, but you may have 1 of the spider legs always touching the same trace, it goes around the whole board in a circle. that might be ground. Then the other three legs (or 8 legs, however many there are) touch other spots that are now connected to ground, through that one leg that's always on ground. When it turns, the ground is now connected to other wires because of how the stepper unit is wired up.
      Thanks for watching TreadwellJay!

    You really need to be careful with contact cleaner on older gear. I was cleaning some contacts on an OLD OLD OLD Harmen receiver, and the speaker outputs literally shattered when the cleaner hit it. I replaced the speaker output blocks, and ran a test. Of the 4 different contact cleaners I have, 3 of them damaged the old plastic, and one discolored it. I don't experience that with 'newer' gear so it must be something in those old units. Live and learn. :)

      I've seen some brands of old audio and radio electronics which have potentiometers that can't be cleaned by spraying with any known control cleaner ---- the pots simply freeze up. If they're really bad you have to take them apart and polish the tracks and commutators; otherwise, just exercise the pots back and forth 50+ times and hope they clean up somewhat. By the way I have seen cans of electronic contact cleaner that on one secrion of the label, the can will say will say "cleans and lubricates" but elsewhere on the can it'll say " leaves no residue".

    Some pinball games have 3 home positions and others have 1 home position. I'm very confused how a pinball game score motor that has 3 home positions can RESET all the Reset relays when it has 3 home positions. I can logically understand score motors having 1 home position because the score motor has a Reset relay and has to make all the other Reset relays on the bonus unit, wheel unit, ball unit, score reel units, all Reset relays have to be OPEN to be at HOME position. The Score motor that has 3 home positions is more confusing to me, which I'm not sure how this logically can work unless it has "3 Reset relays on the score motor" at each home position point on the score motor?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 года назад

      So the score motor spins around and between each home position, it has certain bumps on the cams that make things happen. some spin around faster than others, so if it has 1 2 or 3 home positions it doesn't really matter, it just means that it makes the counting or the action happen faster or slower depending on how it's set up. There's only the 1 reset relay, the home position can be any of three positions though. Imagine the wheel that turns split into three equal parts, It doesn't really matter what part you're on they all do the same thing as they spin, and it's the same distance from one home position to the next, and the same things happen. Thank you for watching Wayne!!!!

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 2 года назад

      @@LyonsArcade thanks for the help, I just don't understand why the designers would SPLIT the wheel into 3 equal parts instead of using a Non-Split Wheel with only one home position. I'm confused about who one designer would choose to use the SPLIT while 3 home positions compared to using 1 home position. I know that the 3 home position wheel was a #1 home position that has the reset relay.

      I don't know if this applies but I'm one of those people that were required to say the pledge of allegiance at school. To us, it was just a meaningless chant until one of the teachers got tired of us just mouthing the pledge and explaining what we were supposed to be doing.
      Pledging allegiance was something that was supposed to be done from the heart. It was a daily affirmation of being American and supporting our system of government.
      After that, most of us understood what an oath meant. We were a bit more spirited about the pledge as we said it and affirmed our trust in government.
      The kids nowadays are just like us back then before we were made to understand what we were doing. They don't understand the meaning behind the words that they're mouthing and it's just a meaningless ritual.
      They don't have anything concrete to latch on to keep them steady while the ground under their feet has turned to unstable mud.
      Whoops! I just ranted. Sorry about that!

      @@15743_Hertz We used to the same thing in Australia as late as mid 80s. We sang the national Anthem, Advance Australia Fair, and also feel like we recited a pledge bit can't find it.
      As a child it was meaningless. It wasn't due to not knowing the words, but more not knowing What it means. You try to explain it to a six year old.
      Edit: Found it. It was a Victorian primary school thing and called the Patriotic Declaration.
      I love God and my country, I will honour the flag, I will serve the Queen and cheerfully obey my parents, teachers and the law.
