Thank you to share with us your traditional crafts that, I hope, will not get lost in time! What making crafts taught me is: patience and be meticulous, one pointed concentration in diving into what I am doing, time and space disappear... I am totally in... totally one with what I love to do and trusting that it will be fine...often brings beautiful surprises!!!
@MeagainIA2011 I hadn't thought of it until now,but yes, absolutely,a person's hands and wrists and probably their forearms as well, would be incredibly strong after many many years of milking by hand.
It’s a joy to watch a craftsman at work. It wasn’t until near the end that I realized just how the sandal fit on a person’s foot. I’m sure they are comfortable to wear. Thank you for sharing your skill.
Beautiful work of weaving straw and creating useful items with your hands! I hope you are teaching others to do this amazing work. Thank you for this video. Stay safe and healthy!!!! ❤
Fascinating process, thank you for showing it. I am curious to know how long it takes to make a pair of these from start to finish. I'd also be curious to know what sort of plants are used and when and how they are harvested. Was this craft traditionally practised by women or both women and men or even mainly by men? Was there a particular region where it was carried out or did each community have a sandal-maker? How were the socks that were generally worn with those shoes made? It looked like the lady making the sandals was wearing a pair.
It takes about 1 day for making pair shoes! And it is made by straw from Japanese rice! Both men and women made straw sandals. Furthermore, there was no specific region, and straw sandal were made all over Japan. It is common to wear shoes without socks.
I find that one of the most fascinating things you can watch,is a person working at,and totally caught up in,their craft. What they're making might have been something I had no interest in,until I saw it being created, and that changed my feeling towards the item(s)/object.Whether it's these handmade straw sandals,or creating a one-of-a-kind chopper-style motorcycle,I can appreciate the creation and usage much more.I would definitely be interested in seeing more videos like this one.
This is awesome and inspiring. I too have a history of basket and rug loom weaving. This fascinates me to see someone my age with such physical agility to use her tools as she has. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this! I am always trying to learn how to do new things, but your skill is so wonderful. Also, I love the history of old ways and they live on.
I love the way the loops are pulled through to make the ends nice and tight. The finished sandals are like flip flops but with a twist! And they don’t harm the environment. The old ways have such a lot to offer us.
I am watching an artist show, I am amazed by her techniques, simple materials with two hands, the final products are beautiful, I really wish I can have those slippers for decoration in my room. Thanks for sharing this video 🎉

What an amazing skill this woman has!! I would have liked to know at what age did she learn to make these sandals? Who did she learn from? Does she grown & harvest her own straw? Thank you for creative such a lovely video! I love all things made by hand & especially items that have existed for hundreds of years!!!
I have a pair of straw sandals that were given to me as a gift when I first visited Japan more than 50 years ago. At the time, I thought they were just a small token of friendship, but I had no idea how intricate the process was in making them. I'll treasure them even more, now that I know the skill and craftsmanship that went into their creation.

How incredible, that takes some serious stregnth to be able to weave all those grass fibres to ensure they stay together! Kudos Grandmother! As for the title, shall we go with 'a 75yr old craftswoman' rather than craftsman? That's quite the insult to her.
Making the base rope for the sandles the process was very familiar to me. Because I make a much smaller version of that rope out of linden bark. I've been trying to go smaller and smaller, but I can't help but smile at this giant tougher version of the cordage I'm learning to make.
