      Nice. They wanted to charge $700 extra for one of these in the artifact edition of the Heart and Soul of Dune. I decided I'd wait to see if someone started 3D printing them and two weeks later here we are. 😂

      @@jccouture13 Wow that's a lot! Do you plan on making one of your own? Thanks for the comment!

    Looks good! Possible improvement route would be with a spring and latch mechanism. As the motor reaches the top, latch releases, spring thumps : D

      Nice idea - yeah that would work well! Have to try that on the next iteration! Appreciate the comment and suggestion!

    Excellent job!!! One option for a faster action might be a solenoid. Power it up to push it up and then when the solenoid retracts, the thumper drops under its own weight. Just a thought. 🙂 Now that you've built the thumper, you need to build a full scale worm too. 🤪

      That’s a great suggestion thanks! Full scale worm… now that’s an idea!

    If you invest in an airbrush you'll be able to control paint flow (good for thinner coats and preventing over spray when getting into nooks and crannies) and increased drying time, and I wonder if that will help with cool temps and high humidity (eg lacquer has a slight heating effect as it cures). SMS paints makes some beautiful acrylic lacquer paints that spray like a dream.

      I’ll have to try that - have an air brush will give that a go!! Thanks! Also living the Cylon in your profile pic 😊

    I'm not sure how well it would show on camera if you sprinkled a bit of cinnamon as spice on top of the sand. It looks great regardless. 👌

    I am working on one that used a motor and cam sort of like the Da Vinci hammer. As the motor rotates the top section rides up a ramp then falls back do

      Yeah that’s a great idea - I’m sure it will make it ‘thump’ more! Found some footage on line of the original prop and it looks like they used pneumatics!

    Cool idea :)
    I bought the same files but found them to be quite small (66mm diameter) compared to the screen version, and the versions other people make. After comparing 8 or 9 other designs I decided to average it out and scaled mine up to 90mm diameter (approx 137.35%).
    Did you upscale yours?

    • @ExperienceExplorers
      @ExperienceExplorers  Месяц назад

      Yes I had to scale it - took a bit of experimentation. Can’t remember now the exact percentage. And thanks so much 😊

    i know 3d printing is cool and handy but i my opinion the surface finish is really awfull. To conceive prototype it's perfect but for a finished product you can't let this like that. This need some sanding and filer to have a proper good aspect. Looks like a toy.

    • @ExperienceExplorers
      @ExperienceExplorers  5 месяцев назад

      Sorry you don’t like this - I agree with you… a right out of the printer model needs a lot of work. I did sand, prime, sand, paint and finish with bed liner to give a metal texture to remove layer lines - and make it look like one in the movie. Did you watch the whole video?

    • @lithitbzh
      @lithitbzh 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ExperienceExplorers result is not great 🙊 and yeah i rewatched it 3 times. Your not even close to the original texture. surface should be more unruffled and smooth, rewatch the movie in 4k, you'll see. i'm not saying that to be mean. it's just you are so close to the perfection it's too bad to stop here. Find proper actuator (this one dont make the illusion for one cent) and redo surface finish, you and your work decerve it. tho, i'm might be wrong with the budget aspect of yyour build but hey, so close to original product.
