My older brother hooked up with Allied van lines made a bunch of money, Two of his sons did the same. One went on to own his own moving company the other left Allied for the post office driving for them till he retired. Me I drove for several companies the pay was good, So is my retirement I looked into O/O many times. Even thought of Alaska during the pipe line days. I just like being home every week. When I got to be senior man I was able to pick where I wanted to go. Now am retired for the last 11 yrs. I still miss it a bit. I drove 44 yrs. and amassed 5.3 million miles. People don’t value us ? Seriously? If you guys don’t value yourselves, how can you guys expect other people to value you?
The worst part is that brokers know that you guys don’t value yourselves, that is the reason they are paying whatever they want .
I said you guys don’t value yourselves, because I’m not there with you guys .
In my 9 plus years of experience, I learned that we have good and bad times , therefore I saved for , so I’m not bending over to broker’s will . I refused to haul cheap loads . Since February till today I run 2,750 miles .
I’m very disappointed about you guys that are hauling cheap loads , knowing that everything is more expensive. Diesel, technician labor , parts, food , etc etc and you guys keep bending over and taking it ????
Why ? Why you guys don’t value yourselves??? Are you waiting for brokers to value you ???

Dude , I’m a trucker in the UK. When work is slow the best cause of action is to slow down. You have the time to do so atm. Over here we are limited to 56mph. Some drivers sit at 52. Some even sit at 50 like myself. I’m doing 13.2mpg so far this week. The difference 6mph makes on your fuel mileage is significant. Surely worth the effort when work slows up. Cheers dude. You’ll be ok 😉

Yes, they're your EMPLOYER> WHen you get tired of working without them retaining taxes and paying your unemployment taxes, etc., report them to the state and federal labor departments. They'll have to make it up out of their own pockets. And then you can amend your tax returns and get a significant refund.

Took my car in to get a simple car inspection there was 2 techs and at least 30+ cars in the lot waiting. 5 people in line when I was checking in, phones ringing off the hook and the service manager frustrated. They were so busy that they pulled my car into the garage slapped the stickers on and gave me my keys back😆. 👍. I think you would do really well running your own auto repair shop.

Don’t even joke about closing your authority! I was in the same spot, I parked my 2 Dry Vans went to learn flatbed, bought a flatbed, spent around 10,000 dollar on headache rack, straps, chains, binders, could racks, stale pockets, edge protectors, 2 6ft tarps, 2 8ft tarps, moving blankets , bevel dunnage etc etc etc, the only thing I regret is not getting into flatbed sooner, I have more experience in the tanker hazmat field, but I can’t get the umbrella insurance yet because My insurance company wants me to be in the business for 3 years so that I’m not considered a new venture, only 8 months left for that then one of my trucks stays in flatbed and the other one is getting a tanker so that I can put it to work on the hazmat side of the business, I guess my point is try to specialize on a field that not a lot of people do, there’s a lot of Dry Van And Refeer O/O and when you get to a shipper or a consignee your time it’s on their hand and they don’t really care about it, in Flatbed 99.5 of the time is FCFS no appointment, and I would be lying to you if I tell you that I have spent more than 3 hours at a shipper/consignee, that’s totally up to you and how fast you are removing your tarps and straps, but it’s totally up to you! I won’t lie, at the beginning it took me a little while to get the hang of it, but practice makes perfect! And I can see you are a hard worker, you’ll have no issues learning, another good thing about flatbed is that I’ve been able to keep my average RPM lately around 2.85 to 3.25 on regular 48ft flatbed no oversize, if I get an oversize that’s more money, and I believe that any experienced flatbed O/O won’t let me lie, yes rates are cheap right now, but I’ll take that over the 1 to 1.50 rpm that dry vans are getting right now. On the hazmat side there’s more money as well, I haul fuel and jet fuel when there’s exceptions from the states so we can run without the insurance coverage and that’s usually on emergency situations, take for example when the CALNEV pipeline was sinking, we were running fuel from Phoenix to Las Vegas, back and forth, guaranteed money, and you don’t have to kill yourself, if you see an O/O with his own tanker hauling oil , ask him how much money he’s making, there’s guys making over 6 dollars a mile, on a 1,000+ miles, and that’s oil!! And you don’t need hazmat to haul oil, and all you need to know is how to operate a pump, and trust me it’s not Rocket science. there’s not a lot of O/O that own their tanker with hazmat insurance, yes the insurance it’s a lot higher but it definitely pays for itself and some more! There’s ways Justin! We just need to be willing to take on the risk, I took mine when I decided to run with a fellow flatbedder friend to learn the trade, I told him We can run team so you can deliver the loads early and take more volume, don’t pay me a dime just promise me you’ll teach me to the best of your abilities and that will be like if I actually paid for training, my only regret is that I didn’t take this decision early on in my career when I was just first starting, but I believe everything happens for a reason! Be safe Brother!

I been there myself. When I went off on my own after being a subcontractor for 4 years I decided I had pretty much hit my max I would be able to do as a subcontractor with my own truck. New start up when it comes to insurance and finding one that's got an A+ or Even an A- rating to write a policy on your. They want to see at least 2 years of loss runs from your being in business. I ran into that, but I had a very strong well known mentor that I had contracted too for four years and he had been a board member of the largest most know industry association world wide so I as asked them what if I could get a written letter of recommendation from Don Thornton and the underwriter knew who he was and told me straight up if Don Thornton writes you a letter of recommendation son, you won't have any trouble getting any insurance company to wrote you up a policy. Nor will you have a problem getting contracts direct with major lenders. I said ok called Mr Thornton and he wrote one up for me and sent it to the number and person needing it. I was told to frame that and that such a highly recommendation DT wrote up on me was as valuable as a masters degree, meaning it was gold for me in my industry and it was. Look to see if you could get by with a letter of recommendation from someone well know and strong within that field of trucking

This is the master plan by the billionaires who own the Big Carriers, run those rates down & force those independent Truckers to give up there tractors & come work for them or lease on to there company & get steady money ( not get paid well) but having a half a loaf of bread is better than none & these guys have the power to do it knowing there are enough suckers to haul that freight cheap or starve & die, also the drivers who do not have a lot of overhead, big mortgage, car payments, 5 kids & live in there truck, yes they can haul those loads for cheap rates & still make it, so let this be a lesson to many DOWNSIZE & survive 🥺😊

Seems like you got the problem, the man don’t move cheap freight and his truck is probable paid for, if it don’t pay let it stay, that’s why after 4 years he’s still in business, most guys go out after a year because they have no idea how much it cost to run their truck

You say going back home constantly like if it’s a bad thing.. If you don’t go home often then u are doing it wrong not all of us want to abandon our home to run theses roads, only rookies are up for that anyone doing it more than 5 years i my self have been on for 18 and it’s just a job the least I can be out on the road the better.

Company is the way to go. The Mega carriers are the reason things are going in the direction they are. I sometimes think they would haul for a penny a mile just to keep O/O from getting work. 28 years driving this month, 2 million plus miles and even th C.B. traffic isn't what it used to be. Stay safe out there drivers!!!
