what if you have two cubes that aren't instanced, can you instance the other cube without deleting it and doing another alt + D? Or even a totally different object that you want to be an instance of.
If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if I can instance a duplicate of a cube that hasn't been instanced in the past? If that is your question then yes, it is possible. The first cube will not be touched, but the 2nd and 3rd cube will be instances of one another, so editing either of the instance will edit it's partner as well.
